1 فَارَ, (M, Msb, K,) aor. ـُ said of water; (Msb;) and فَارَتْ, aor. ـُ said of a قِدْر [or cooking-pot]; (T, S;) inf. n. فَوْرٌ and فَوَرَانٌ (T, S, M, Msb, K) [the latter of which is the more common] and فُؤُورٌ (M, K) and فُوَارٌ; (M, TA;) It boiled, or estuated. (T, S, M, Msb, K.) b2: [فار said of a liquor, It fermented. (See نَبِيذٌ.) b3: Said of blood, and of wine, It flushed, or mantled, in the cheeks or head.] b4: فارت نَفْسُهُ His soul [or stomach] heaved; or became agitated by a tendency to vomit; i. q. ثارت [q. v.]. (T in art. ثور.) b5: ↓ فار فَائِرُهُ i. q. ثار ثَائِرُهُ (T, S, K) His anger boiled [or became roused or excited]; (S;) or he was, or became, angry. (TA.) b6: [And ↓ the same phrase is expl. in the M, accord. to the transcript in the TT, as signifying اِنْتَشَرَ غَضَبُهُ; but I think that the right reading is evidently عَصَبُهُ; and the meaning, His sinews became swollen; said of a horse or the like: see art. نشر; and see also فَائِرٌ, below.] b7: فار العِرْقُ, inf. n. فَوَرَانٌ, The vein became excited, or in a state of commotion, and flowed forth [with blood]: (M, K, TA:) to which is added in the K, وَضَرَبَ; but this is a mistake, occasioned by a false reading of the next words in the M, which are وَضَرْبٌ فَوَّارٌ رَغِيبٌ وَاسِعٌ. (TA. [See فَوَّارٌ.]) b8: فَوْرُ العِرْقِ, in a horse means The vein's having inflations, or knots, [or a varicose condition,] apparent in it; which is disapproved. (ISk, TA.) b9: فار said of water signifies also It welled, and came forth, from the earth, or ground: (Mgh:) it appeared, pouring forth, from the spring, or source. (TA.) b10: فاروا is said of men assembled in market-places [app. as meaning They bustled, or were in a state of commotion]. (TA.) b11: فار المِسْكُ, inf. n. فُوَارٌ and فَوَرَانٌ, [The odour of] the musk spread. (M, K.) A2: فُرْتُهُ: see 4.

A3: Also (فُرْتُهُ) I made for it, i. e. the balance, what are termed فِيَارَانِ [dual of فِيَارٌ, q. v.]. (Th, M, K.) 2 فوّر لِلنُّفَسَآءِ He made what is termed فِيرَة [q. v.] for the woman in the state following childbirth. (M, K.) 4 أَفَرْتُهُ and ↓ فُرْتُهُ I made it to boil, or estuate. (IAar, M, K.) الفَارُ The muscles of a man: (M, K:) also mentioned in art. فأرِ, as written with ء. (TA.) أَبْرِزْ نَارَكَ وَإِنْ هَزَلْتَ فَارَكَ [Put forth thy fire, that passengers may see it and be attracted by it, though thou make lean thy muscles,] is a saying meaning (assumed tropical:) give food though thou injure thy body [by doing so]. (M, L.) A2: See also فَأْرٌ (with which it is syn. in other senses), in art. فأر.

فَوْرٌ [originally an inf. n.: see 1.] The burning, or heat, and boiling, of Hell. (TA.) And Intenseness, or vehemence, of heat; (TA;) as also ↓ فَوْرَةٌ. (S.) b2: فَوْرُ الشَّفَقِ The remains of the redness in the western horizon after sunset: as also ثَوْرُهُ. (TA.) [See also فَوْرَةٌ.]

A2: And A time: (TA:) [or rather] the present time in which is no delaying. (Msb.) Thus in the saying, الشُّفْعَةُ عَلَى الفَوْرِ [The right of pre-emption is to be had] in the present time in which is no delaying. (Msb.) b2: And hence, A state in which is no delay. (Msb.) You say, جَآءَ فُلَانٌ فِى حَاجَتِهِ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ مِنْ فَوْرِهِ [Such a one came for the object of his want,] then returned immediately, or at once: or, as some say, with the same motion with which he came, not ceasing from motion after it; properly, conjoining what was before the coming with what was after it, without tarrying. (Msb.) and أَتَوْا مِنْ فَوْرِهِمْ, meaning مِنْ وَجْهِهِمْ [i. e., app., They came in a headlong manner; like the phrase مَضَى عَلَى وَجْهِهِ]; (M, K, TA; but the M has جَاؤُوا instead of أَتَوْا;) and this is said by Zj to be the meaning of مِنْ فَوْرِهِمْ in the Kur iii. 121: (M, TA:) or قَبْلَ أَنْ يَسْكُنُوا [before their resting, or ceasing from motion]: (K, TA:) or مِنْ فَوْرِهِمْ in the Kur ubi suprà means in the commencement of their procedure: (O:) or in, or at, their instant of time; (Ksh, Bd;) i. e. [in, or at, the same instant, or] immediately: (Bd:) and أَتَيْتُ فُلَانًا مِنْ فَوْرِى, meaning قَبْلَ أَنْ أَسْكُنَ [i. e. I came to such a one before my resting, or ceasing from motion]. (S, O.) And you say, فَعَلْتُهُ مِنْ فَوْرِى, meaning I did it at once, or instantly. (T, TA.) فُورٌ Gazelles: (T, S, M, K:) a word having no sing.; (T, S, M, TA;) accord. to IAar and Yaakoob: (TA:) or its sing. is ↓ فَائِرٌ; (M, K, TA;) accord. to Kr. (TA.) One says, لَا أَفْعَلُ كَذَا مَا لَأْلَأَتِ الفُورُ I will not do such a thing while the gazelles wag their tails. (IAar, T, S.) فَارَةٌ المِسْكِ The odour of musk: or the bag, or receptacle, [i. e. the follicle, or vesicle,] thereof: (M, L:) [Sgh says that] this and what next follows have been mentioned in art. فأر, [q. v.,] but should more properly be mentioned in the present art., both being from فَارَ, aor. ـُ (O.) b2: فَارَةُ الإِبِلِ means The sweet exhalation from the skins of the camels when they are moist after returning from the water. (M, K.) فَوْرَةٌ: see فَوْرٌ: b2: and فُوَارَةٌ. b3: Also An ebullition of anger, rage, or passion; syn. هَائِجٌ. (S and K in art. هيج.) b4: And Freshness, or newness: so in the saying أَخَذْتُ الشَّىْءَ بِفَوْرَتِهِ [I took the thing in its fresh, or new, state]. (TA.) b5: [And hence,] فَوْرَةُ النَّهَارِ The first part, or beginning, of the day. (T, TA.) And فَوْرَةُ العِشَآءِ The time [next] after the عِشَآء [or nightfall]. (S, TA.) b6: فَوْرَةُ النَّاسِ The place where people congregate, and where they bustle, or are in a state of commotion, (يَفُورُونَ,) in their market-places. (TA.) b7: فَوْرَةُ الجَبَلِ The higher, or highest, part; and the elevated and hard, or elevated and plain or level, part; of the mountain. (K.) فُورَةٌ i. q. فُؤْرَةٌ [expl. in art. فأر] meaning A certain flatus in the pastern of a horse [&c.]. (O, K.) b2: And i. q. كُوفَةٌ [A round piece, or collection, of red sand; or a piece, or collection, of sand mixed with pebbles; &c.]. (Kr, M, K.) فِيرَةٌ Fenugreek (حُلْبَةٌ) mixed [in the manner described voce فَئِيرَةٌ (q. v.) in art. فأر] for the woman in the state following childbirth. (M, K.) فِيَارٌ sing. of فِيَارَانِ, (T,) which signifies The two things (T, S, M, O, K) of iron (M, K) between which is the tongue of the balance: (T, S, M, O, K:) originally with و in the place of the ى, (M, O,) changed into ى because of the kesreh before it. (O.) فُوَارَةٌ The froth, or foam, that boils, or boils over, of a cooking-pot: (S and K in this art. * and voce طُبَاخَةٌ:) and ↓ مَفَاوِرُ signifies the same, mentioned by Ibn-'Abbád. (O.) And [in like manner] ↓ فَوْرَةٌ signifies The mantling foam upon the surface of wine. (TA.) فَوَّارٌ [an intensive epithet from فَارَ; signifying Boiling much; &c.: b2: and Water, &c., welling forth abundantly; gushing]. b3: [Hence,] ضَرْبٌ فَوَّارٌ A smiting [that inflicts a wound] such as is wide, (IAar, M, TA,) so that the blood flows [abundantly]: (M:) a poet says, بِضَرْبٍ يُخَفِّتُ فَوَّارُهُ وَطَعْنٍ تَرَى الدَّمَ مِنْهُ رَشِيشًا

إِذَا قَتَلُوا مِنْكُمُ فَارِسًا ضَمِنَّا لَهُ بَعْدَهُ أَنْ يَعِيشَا (IAar, M, TA. [The text of the M as given in the TT, for تَرَى الدَّمَ, has يُرى الدم; and for أَنْ يَعِيشَا, it has او يعيشا: and the right reading of the first hemistich seems to be, بِضَرْبٍ تُخَفِّتُ فَوَّارَةٍ; for an inf. n. is sometimes made fem.: see an instance of ضَرْب as fem. in the EM p. 157: the poet means, With a smiting that silences, or kills, inflicting a wide and gushing wound; and a piercing with the spear in consequence of which thou seest the blood sprinkled: when they slay a horseman of you, we are responsible for him after it that he shall live: i. e., as is said in the M, his blood shall be revenged, so that he will be as though he had not been slain: and it is also there said that by يخفّت فوّاره is meant لنها واسعة فدمها يسيل ولا صوت له; in which the two fem. pronouns and the fem. epithet all relate to the word ضَرْب, agreeably with what I have stated to be in my opinion the right reading of the first hemistich.]) فَيُّورٌ Sharp, as an epithet applied to a man; syn. حَدِيدٌ. فَوَّارَةٌ, (accord. to the K,) or ↓ فُوَّارَةٌ, (accord. to a copy of the M,) A source, or spring, of water: (M, K:) [the latter word is app. the right in this case; for] IAar says that ↓ فُوَّارَةٌ is applied to a wave: and to a بِرْكَة [i. e. watering-trough, or the like; or basin, pool, pond; &c.]: and فَوَّارَةٌ, to anything that is not water: and in one place he says that دَوَّارَةٌ and فَوَّارَةٌ are applied to anything that does not move nor turn round; and دُوَّارَةٌ and ↓ فُوَّارَةٌ to such as moves and turns round. (T, TA.) b2: فَوَّارَةُ الوَرِكِ, with fet-h and teshdeed, signifies The hole, or perforating aperture, of the ورك [or haunch]: (S, O:) or the فَوَّارَة, (K,) or ↓ فُوَّارَة, (so in a copy of the M,) is an aperture in the وَرِك [or haunch], to the belly, or interior of the body, not obstructed by bone: (M, K:) [these two explanations plainly apply to the sacroischiatic foramen: but what here follows is consistent with what precedes, though somewhat less clear:] or the فَوَّارَتَانِ, (K,) or ↓ فُوَّارَتَانِ, (accord. to a copy of the M,) are [two parts, in the region of the pelvis, described as being] سِكَّتَانِ [a word which I do not find to have any proper meaning that would be here apposite, but which seems to be applied in this case, by a kind of catachresis, to two parts through which a weapon or the like may pass,] between [each of] the haunch-bones or hip-bones (بَيْنَ الوَرِكَيْنِ) and the قُحْقُح [or ischium], towards the side of the وَرِك [or hip-bone], (M, K,) not intervening as obstacles in the way to the belly, or interior of the body; and they are what become in a state of commotion in the act of walking, or going along. (M.) [See also الفَائِلُ, in art. فيل] And accord. to Lth, the term فَوَّارَتَانِ, (O, and so in a copy of the T,) or ↓ فُوَّارَتَانِ, (so in another copy of the T,) is applied to Two appertenances of the كَرِش [or stomach, properly of a ruminant animal], having within them two small nodous lumps (غُدَّتَانِ), which latter are not eaten, and each of which is a piece of flesh in the midst of red flesh. (T, O.) فُوَّارَةٌ: see the next preceding paragraph, in six places.

فَائِرٌ [part. n. of 1: b2: hence, فَارَ فَائِرُهُ]: see 1, in two places. b3: Applied to a beast, of the equine and other kinds, Swollen in the sinews; syn. مُنْتَشِرُ العَصَبِ. (K. [In the TA, this is said to be a mistake for منتشر الغَضَبِ, and thus I find it to be written in the L, and in a copy of the M accord. to the TT: but see what I have said, in the first paragraph of this art., respecting the phrase above mentioned.]) A2: See also فُورٌ.

1 فَدَمْتُ عَلَى فِيِه بِالغِدَامِ, [aor. ـِ inf. n. فَدْمٌ, I covered his, or its, mouth with the فِدَام [q. v.]: (S:) or فَدَمَ فَاهُ, and عَلَى فِيهِ, aor. ـِ and ↓ فدّم, (M, K, TA,) inf. n. تَفْدِيمٌ; (TA;) he put the فِدَام upon his, or its, mouth: (M, K:) [app. used in relation to a man and also to an إِبْرِيق or other vessel: but the latter verb, and as trans. without a particle, seems to be more commonly used in relation to both:] one says of Persians or other foreigners, and of Magians, on the occasion of their giving to drink, أَفْوَاهَهُمْ ↓ فَدَّمُوا They bound the فَدَّام upon their mouths: (T:) and ↓ فدّم الإِبْرِيقَ, (M, K,) inf. n. تَفْدِيمٌ, (K,) He put the فِدَام upon the mouth of the ابريق. فِدَامٌ and ↓ فَدَامٌ and ↓ فَدَّامُ and ↓ فَدُّومٌ, (K,) or ↓ فَدَّامٌ [only], (S, T, M,) A thing which the Persians or other foreigners, (T, K,) and the Magians, (K,) bind upon their mouths on the occasion of their giving to drink; (T, K;) or a piece of cloth with which the Magian binds his mouth; (S;) or a sort of thing with which the Persians or other foreigners wipe [app. the mouth] when they give to drink; one of which is termed ↓ فَدَّامَةٌ. (M. [In the S it seems to be implied that this last word is syn. with فَدَّامٌ as expl. above.]) b2: Also, (K,) or the first, (T, S, M,) and also ↓ فَدَّامٌ, (S,) or and also ↓ فَدَامٌ, (M,) A strainer, or clarifier, (T, S, M, K,) for a mug and an إِبْرِيق and the like; (T;) a thing that is put in, or upon, the mouth of the ابريق, for the straining, or clarifying, of what is in it: (S, M: *) also called ثِدَامٌ. مُفْدَمٌ: n. un. of فَدَّامٌ: see فِدَامٌ, former half.

مُفْدَمُ: see مُفَدَّمُ. b2: Also A garment, or piece of cloth, saturated with red dye: (Sh, T, S, M, and some copies of the K:) or of which the redness is not intense. (M, and some copies of the K.) It is said in a trad. that he [the Prophet] disliked the مُفْدَمْ for the مُحْرَم, but saw no harm in the مُضَرَّج [q. v.]. (TA.) b3: Also Dye thick and saturated. (S.) b4: And ذُلُّ مُفْدُومٌ (tropical:) Deeplystained, intense, vileness or ignominy. It is said in a trad., إِنَّكُمْ مَدْعُوُّونَ يَوْمَ القِيَامَةِ مُفَدَّمَةً أَفْوَاهُكُمْ بِالفِدَامِ [Verily ye will be summoned on the day of resurrection having your mouths closed with the فدام]; meaning, ye will be withheld from speaking with your mouths, so that your skins will speak. 1 فَاهَ بِهِ, (S, Msb, K,) aor. ـُ (S, Msb) and يَفِيهُ also, (ISd, TA,) inf. n. فَوْهٌ, (MA,) [and inf. n. of unity فَوْهَةٌ, (see Har p. 434,)] He uttered it, or pronounced it, (S, Msb, K,) namely, a saying; (S;) as also ↓ تفوّه. (S, K.) One says, مَا فُهْتُ بِكَلِمَةٍ, and ↓ ما تَفَوَّهْتُ, i. e. I opened not my mouth with a word, or sentence. (S.) فَاهَ لِسَانٌ, a phrase used by El-Hareeree, the Arabs did not say: they only said, فاه الرَّجُلُ بِكَذَا [The man opened his mouth with such a thing, i. e., with such a saying, &c.]. (Har p. 191.) And هٰذَا أَمْرٌ مَا فُهْتُ عَنْهُ, inf. n. فُوُوهٌ [or فُؤُوهٌ ?], is a saying mentioned by Fr, as meaning This is a thing, or an affair, which I mentioned not, or have not mentioned. A2: فَوِهَ, aor. ـْ [inf. n. فَوَهٌ,] He (a man) had what is termed ↓ فَوَهٌ, (S, TA,) which means width of the mouth, (S, K, TA,) and largeness thereof: (TA:) or protrusion and length of the upper central incisors: (S, TA:) or length of all the teeth; length of the upper central incisors being termed رَوَقٌ: (IB, TA:) or protrusion of the teeth from the lips, with length thereof. (K, TA.) 2 فوّههُ He (i. e. God) made him to be أَفْوَه [or wide in the mouth, &c.]. (S, K.) b2: شَدَّ مَا فَوَّهْتَ فِى هٰذَا الطَّعَامِ, [thus accord. to the TA, but an explanation of مُفَوَّهٌ seems to show that the right reading is فُوِّهْتَ, in the pass. form,] and ↓ تَفَوَّهْتَ, and ↓ فُهْتَ, means شَدَّ مَا أَكَلْتَ [app. Much indeed, or greatly indeed, didst thou eat, or hast thou eaten, of this food; see شَدَّ: and see also 10]. (TA.) 3 فاوههُ, (K, TA,) inf. n. مُفَاوَهَةٌ; (TA;) and فَاهَاهُ, [formed from the former by transposition,] (K, TA,) inf. n. مُفَاهَاةٌ; (TA;) He talked, or discoursed, with him: [see also 6:] and he contended with him for superiority in glory, or excellence. A2: تفوّه المَكَانَ (assumed tropical:) He entered the فُوَّهَة of the place; (K, TA;) i. e., the mouth thereof; likened to the فَم [properly thus called] as being the first place of ingress to the interior thereof. (TA.) 6 تفاوهوا They talked [app. one to another: see 3]. (K.) 10 استفاه, (S, K,) inf. n. اِسْتِفَاهَةٌ and اِسْتِفَاهٌ, (K,) the latter mentioned by Lh, (TA,) He (a man, S) ate, (S, K,) or drank, (K,) vehemently, after scantiness, (S, K,) or after weakness; (so in a copy of the S;) but seldom used in relation to drinking: or you say, استفاه فِى الطَّعَامِ, meaning he ate much of the food: so says IAar, not particularizing the act as being after scarcity or not. فُوهٌ and ↓ فَاهٌ and ↓ فِيهٌ (K, TA) and, accord. to the copies of the K, فُوهَةٌ, [or, as in the CK, فَوْهَة,] but correctly ↓ فُوَّهَةٌ, (TA,) and فَمٌ, all signify the same [i. e. The mouth]: (K, TA:) the pl. is أَفْوَاهٌ, (S, K, TA,) pl. of فُوهٌ, (S, TA,) and as such its case is plain; as pl. of فِيهٌ, it is like أَرْوَاحٌ as pl. of رِيحٌ; as pl of فَاهٌ, it is allowable as having و for its original medial radical; but as pl. of فُوَّهَةٌ, it is anomalous: (TA:) and another pl. is أَفْمَامٌ, (K, TA,) said by some to be pl. of فُمٌّ or فَمٌّ, with teshdeed, of which an ex. occurs in a verse cited in the first paragraph of art. فم; but some disallow this pl.; and accord. to some, (TA,) it has no sing. (K, TA) agreeable with rule, (TA,) for فَمٌ is originally فَوَهٌ, (K, TA,) with the و movent by fet-h, or [فَوْهٌ, as in some copies of the S,] with the و quiescent, on the authority of IJ; (TA;) the ه is elided, and the و becomes a movent final, therefore it must be changed into ا, because of the fet-hah preceding it, so the word becomes فا; but a noun may not be of two letters whereof one is [the ن of] the tenween, (K, TA,) thus the passage is expressed in the M, but MF remarks that correctly we should say whereof one is the ا, (TA,) and therefore a hard letter is substituted for it, one similar to it in kind, which is م, for they are both labials, and in the م is a sort of humming sound (هَوِىٌّ, in the CK هُوِىٌّ,) in the mouth, [or rather in the nose,] resembling [the sound of] the prolongation of the و: (K, TA:) [several similar disquisitions, added in the TA, respecting the change from فوه to فم, I omit, regarding them as needless: what is said on this subject in the S, in art. فم, I have mentioned in that art.:] in the present art., J says that the م of فم is a substitute for the ه, not for the و, of فوه; but this is a mistake: (IB, TA:) the dual of فَمٌ is فَمَانِ and فَمَوَانِ (IAar, S, Msb, K) and فَمَيَانِ, the second and third of which are anomalous: (IAar, K:) of the second, which occurs in a verse of ElFarezdak, [and respecting which see the first paragraph of art. فم,] Sb says that it is used by poetic license. (TA.) In using it as a prefixed noun, in the phrase هٰذَا فُوهُهُ, they deemed the combination of the two هs difficult in respect of utterance; therefore they suppressed the [radical]

ه thereof [in this case, and then in other, similar, cases], and said, هٰذَا فُوهُ, and فُو زَيْدٍ, and رَأَيْتُ فَا زَيْدٍ, and مَرَرْتُ بِفِى زَيْدٍ: and when prefixing it to [the pronoun denoting] thyself, thou sayest, هٰذَا فِىَّ; and this thou dost alike in using it in the nom. case and in the accus. and in the gen., because the و [of فُو] is changed into ى and is then incorporated [into the pronominal ى]: (S, and the like is said in the Msb:) and sometimes, though rarely, they did the like in other cases, when not prefixing it; for instance, فَا occurs at the end of a verse of El-'Ajjáj, without an affix, in this case for فَاهَا. (S.) b2: In the saying كَلَّمْتُهُ فَاهُ إِلَى فِىَّ, meaning I spoke to him, his mouth being near to my mouth, فاه is in the accus. case as a denotative of state: (S, TA: *) or by reason of the derivative [مُكَلِّمًا] meant to be understood: or, as Sb says, it is an instance of one of the nouns that are put in the place of inf. ns., and it is not to be separated from what should follow it, so that you may not say كَلَّمْتُهُ فَاهَ [alone], for you tell of your nearness to the person, and that there is not any one between you and him: and if you will, you may use the nom. case, meaning وَهٰذِهِ حَالُهُ [this being his state], (Sb, TA,) i. e. فُوهُ إِلَى فِىَّ [his mouth was near to my mouth], the clause [following كلّمته] occupying the place of a denotative of state. (TA.) b3: The saying فَاهَا لِفِيكَ, (Meyd, K, TA,) which is a prov., (Meyd, TA,) means May God make the mouth of misfortune to cleave to thy mouth; (Meyd, K, * TA;) [but lit. signifies, only, her, or its, mouth to thy mouth; and is [likewise] an instance of one of the nouns that are used in the manner of inf. ns. expressive of imprecation, by reason of a verb not mentioned: Sb says, فاها is without tenween, meaning فَا الدَّاهِيَةِ, as is shown by the saying, وَدَاهِيَةٍ مِنْ دَوَاهِى المَنُو نِ يَرْهَبُهَا النَّاسُ لَا فَا لَهَا

[Many a misfortune is there, of the misfortunes of time, which men fear, that has no mouth, wherewith to bite]: (Sb, TA:) A'Obeyd says that its primary meaning is, may God make the ground to be in thy mouth; that it is like the sayings بِفِيكَ الحَجَرُ and بِفِيكَ الأَثْلَبُ; (S, Meyd;) and [hence] it means disappointment [cleave] to thee: (S, * Meyd:) a man of Belhujeym, (S, Meyd,) cited by A'Obeyd, (S,) addressing a wolf that sought to get his she-camel, (Meyd,) says, فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَاهَا لِفِيكَ فَإِنَّهَا قَلُوصُ امْرِئٍ قَارِيكَ مَا أَنْتَ حَاذِرُهُ [And I said to him, فاها لفيك, for she is the youthful she-camel of a man who will give thee as a guest's entertainment that which thou fearest]; (S, Meyd; but in the S, as IB has observed, فَإِنَّهُ is erroneously put for فَإِنَّهَا;) i. e. [who will entertain thee with] the shooting of arrows; (Meyd;) [by قَارِيكَ] he means يَقْرِيكَ, from قِرَى

الضَّيْفِ: (S:) it is also said that فَاهَا is metonymically used as meaning the dust of the earth, which is termed the mouth of the earth because it drinks the water; and it is as though the saying meant the dust be in thy mouth: (Meyd:) Sh is related to have said, I heard IAar say لِفِيكَ ↓ فَاهًا, with tenween, meaning may God make thy mouth to cleave to the ground; [or rather, ground to thy mouth; lit., simply, a mouth to thy mouth;] and some say فَاهَا لِفِيكَ, without tenween, as an imprecation meaning (assumed tropical:) may God break thy فَم [i. e. thy teeth, to which فَم is often metonymically applied, as is also فُوه]. (TA.) b4: One says also, سَقَى فُلَانٌ إِبِلَهُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهَا, meaning (tropical:) Such a one drew for his camels the water when they came to it, while they were drinking; not having stored it for them in the drinking-trough: and جَرَّ فُلَانٌ

إِبِلَهُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهَا (tropical:) Such a one suffered his camels to pasture while going along [by his driving them gently: see art. جر]: so says As: and so accord. to the A and other lexicons; but the author of the K, by an omission, has assigned the latter explanation to the former phrase. (TA.) b5: لَوْ وَجَدْتُ

إِلَيْهِ فَا كَرِشٍ, meaning أَدْنَى طَرِيقٍ, (K, TA,) has [with other, similar, phrases] been explained in art. كرش [q. v.]. (TA.) b6: فُو فَرَسٍ حَمِرٍ [Mouth of a horse that is suffering indigestion in consequence of his having eaten barley and so made it to stink] is an appellation applied to him who has stinking breath. (TA. [An ex. of it occurs in a verse of Imra-el-keys cited in the TA in art. حمر as in Ahlwardt's “ Divans of the Six Ancient Arabic Poets,” p. 125; and differently in De Slane's “ Diwan d'Amro-'kaïs,” p. 36 of the Arabic text.]) b7: And فُو جُرَدٍ [Mouth of a large fieldrat] and فُو دَبًا [Mouth of a sort of small wingless locust, or perhaps correctly فُو دَبَاةٍ mouth of a small wingless locust,] are nicknames applied to a little man. (TA.) b8: One says also, لَا فُضُّ فُوهُ, meaning (tropical:) May his teeth, or front teeth, not be broken. (K, * TA.) And سَقَطَ فُوهُ (assumed tropical:) His teeth fell out. (TA in art. فض [q. v.]) b9: And مَاتَ لِفِيهِ i. e. لِوَجْهِهِ [meaning (tropical:) He died upon his face; prone: like سَقَطَ لِوَجْهِهِ (assumed tropical:) He fell upon his face: the ل in both being used in the sense of عَلَى; as it is in the phrase خَرُّوا لِأَذْقَانِهِمْ (expl. in art. خر), &c.]. (A, K, TA. [The explanation in the TK, being somewhat ambiguous (though correct), has misled Freytag in this case.]) And [in like manner, using لِ in the sense of على,] كبَّهُ اللّٰهُ لِفِيهِ, one of their forms of imprecation, meaning (assumed tropical:) May God cause him to die: or prostrate him [upon his face; as also كَبَّهُ لِوَجْهِهِ]. (TA.) b10: [See also فُوَّهَةٌ as syn. with فُوهٌ; like which it has أَفْوَاهٌ for a pl.]

A2: فُوهٌ also, having for its pl. أَفْوَاهٌ, and pl. pl. أَفَاوِيهُ, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) [which last is of very frequent occurrence,] signifies Perfume, or an odoriferous substance: (Mgh, Msb:) or a thing, or substance, with which a perfume, or an odoriferous substance, is compounded or prepared (يُعَالَجُ); like as تَوَابِلُ signifies things, or substances, with which sorts of food are compounded or prepared: (S, Mgh:) or the تَوَابِل [or seeds used in cooking] with which food is compounded or prepared (يُعَالَجُ) are also called أَفْوَاهُ الطِّيبِ: (Msb:) [the pl. and pl. pl. are now generally applied to spices, or aromatics:] or الأَفْوَاهُ, the pl. mentioned above, signifies [the seeds called] التَّوَابِلُ: and also what diffuse fragrance [I read نَوَافِحُ, as in my MS. copy of the K, pl. of نَافِحٌ, q. v., instead of نَوَافِجُ (with جِيم), the only reading that I find in other copies of the K, regarding the latter as indubitably a mistranscription,] of perfumes, or odoriferous substances: (K:) and the sorts, or species, of flowers; (K, TA;) thus says AHn; and in one place he says that الافواح signifies what are prepared for perfume, of sweetsmelling flowers; and sometimes they are of herbs, or leguminous plants: (TA:) and also sorts, or species, of a thing [app. of any kind]: (K:) and one says, هُوَ مِنْ أَفْوَاهِ الطيب, and أَفْوَاهِ البُقُولِ, meaning It is of the sorts, or species, and of the mixtures, or compounds, of perfume, and of herbs, or leguminous plants: (Mgh:) but فُوهٌ is not applied to anything that is termed عَقَّارٌ. (AHeyth, TA in art. عقر.) فَوَهٌ: see 1, last sentence. b2: Also The quality of a مَحَالَة [or large sheave of a pulley] such as is termed فَوْهَآء, fem. of أَفْوَهُ, q. v. (TA.) فِيهِ: see its syn. فُوهٌ.

فُوهَةٌ: see فُوَّهَةٌ, in five places.

فُوَّهٌ Certain slender, long, red roots, with which one dyes; beneficial for the liver and the spleen and the نَسَا [app. as meaning sciatica or the sciatic nerve] and pain of the hip and of the flank, powerfully diuretic, and kneaded with vinegar and applied as a liniment it cures the [leprosy termed]

بَرَص: (K, TA:) but the word was not known to Az in this sense, [which is the only meaning, except one which I think doubtful, that I find assigned to it;] and it is said to be the فُوَّة [which see in art. فو, i. e. madder]. (TA.) A2: See also فُوَّهَةٌ.

فَيِّهُ, originally فَيْوِهٌ: see مُفَوَّهٌ.

فُوَّهَةٌ: see its syn. فُوهٌ. b2: [Hence] it signifies also (tropical:) The فَم [i. e. mouth] of a place; likened to the فَم [properly so called] as being the first place of ingress, or entrance, to the interior: (TA:) [and so too as being the place of egress, or exit, from the interior:] it is of a river, or rivulet, (Lth, S, Msb, TA,) and of a valley, or water-course, or torrent-bed, (K, TA,) and of a street, and of a road; (S, Msb, K, TA;) signifying the فَم [or mouth]; as also ↓ فُوهَةٌ, (K, TA,) without teshdeed; mentioned by IAar: (TA:) or it signifies thus in relation to a river, or rivulet; (Lth, Msb, TA;) the foremost part thereof: or, as some say, the place of its pouring into the كِظَامَة [q. v.]: and accord. to Lth, in relation to a valley, or water-course, or torrent-bed, its رَأْس [or head, as though in this case having one, or each, of two contr. meanings, unless, as I believe it to be, the mouth, or outlet, of a valley or water-course or torrent-bed be sometimes called its رأس as being its foremost part]: (TA:) and of a street, it is the place of egress, or exit; (Msb;) the foremost part thereof: (TA:) and of a road, it is the فَم [or mouth], which is the upper part thereof (اعلاه): (Msb: [thus in my copy; but I think that اعلاه is a mistranscription, in my copy, for أَوَّلُهُ, and that the correct meaning is therefore the foremost part thereof, agreeably with what is said above in relation to a road and to a river or rivulet:]) but accord. to some, ↓ فُوهَةٌ, without teshdeed, is not allowable; and one should say, الطَّرِيقِ قَعَدَ عَلَى فُوَّهَةٍ, and ↓ فُوَّهِهِ [probably, I think, a mistranscription for فوهِهِ, with the و quiescent, both meaning He sat at the mouth of the road]; not ↓ فُوهَتِهِ, without teshdeed: (TA:) and فُوَّهَةٌ signifies also (assumed tropical:) the first, or foremost, part, of a thing; (K, TA;) like that of the street and that of the river or rivulet: [whence] one says, طَلَعَ عَلَيْنَا فُوَّهَةُ إِبِلِكَ i. e. (tropical:) The first, or foremost, portion of thy camels [came to us, or came forth upon us]; like the phrase فُوَّهَةُ الطَّرِيقِ: (TA:) the pl. of فُوَّهَةٌ is أَفْوَاهٌ, (Ks, S, Msb, TA,) which is anomalous, (S, Msb, TA,) and (TA) فُوَّهَاتٌ [in the CK فُوْهاتٌ] and فَوَائِهُ. (K, TA.) [Hence] one says, دَخَلُوا فِى أَفْوَاهِ البَلَدِ وَخَرَجُوا مِنْ أَرْجُلِهِ, (A, K, * TA,) in the copies of the K أَرْجُلِهَا, which is wrong, (TA,) i. e. (tropical:) They entered into the foremost parts of the country, or town, and went forth from the hindermost parts thereof: (A, K, TA:) the sing. of أَفْوَاه as here used is فُوَّهَةٌ. (TA.) A2: It signifies also A say, or saying, or speech; (S, K, TA;) from 1 in the first of the senses assigned to it above: hence one says, إِنَّ رَدَّ الفُوَّهَةِ لَشَدِيدٌ (S, TA) Verily the retracting of that which has been said is difficult: (Har p. 434:) and [hence] one says also, هُوَ يَخَافُ فُوَّهَةَ النَّاسِ [He fears the say, or speech, of men]. (TA.) b2: And The Muslims' rending one another's reputation by evil speech, or by backbiting; (K, TA;) as also ↓ فُوهَةً. (TA.) b3: إِنَّهُ لَذُو فُوَّهَةٍ means Verily he is strong in speech, and free, or unconstrained, in tongue. (TA.) b4: And one says, مَا أَشَدَّ فُوَّهَةَ بَعِيرِكَ فِى هٰذَا الكَلَأِ, meaning [How vehement is] thy camel's eating [of this herbage]! and in like manner, فُوَّهَةَ فَرَسِكَ [the vehement eating of thy horse]: whence their saying أَفْوَاهُهَا مَجَاسُّهَا [which may be well rendered as it has been in art. جس, q. v.], meaning Their good eating shows thee their fatness, causing thee to be in no need of feeling them to test their condition. (TA.) A3: And Milk, as long as there remains in it the taste of sweetness; (K, * TA;) as also ↓ فُوهَةٌ; and sometimes correctly said with ق, i. e. [قُوهَةٌ,] without teshdeed. (TA.) فَاوُوهَةٌ A man who reveals, or discloses, everything that is in his mind; as also ↓ فَاهٍ, (Fr, S, TA, [but omitted in one of my copies of the S,]) and ↓ فَاهٌ: (Fr, TA:) and بِجُوعِهِ ↓ فَاهٍ one who reveals his hunger; originally فَائِهٌ, like as they said هَارٍ and هَائِرٌ. (TA.) أَفْوَهُ Having what is termed فَوَهٌ, meaning as expl. in the last sentence of the first paragraph [i. e. width of the mouth, &c.]; fem. فَوْهَآءُ; (S, K, TA;) the former applied to a man, and the latter to a woman; (S, TA;) and in like manner to horses. (TA.) فَوْهَآءُ شَوْهَآءُ, applied to a woman, means Wide-mouthed, ugly: and, applied to a mare, wide-mouthed, long-headed: or sharp in spirit. (TA.) b2: [Hence,] بِئْرٌ فَوْهَآءُ A widemouthed well. (K.) b3: And طَعْنَةٌ فَوْهَآءُ A wide wound made by piercing. (K.) b4: And مَحَالَةٌ فَوْهَآءُ [A large sheave of a pulley] (S, K, TA) that is wide (K, TA) and (TA) whereof the teeth between which runs the well-rope are long. (S, TA.) مُفَوَّهٌ and ↓ فَيِّهٌ, (S, K,) the latter originally فَيْوِهٌ, (S,) Eloquent; (S, K, TA;) and so فَيِّهَةٌ applied to a woman; (S, TA;) able in speech; an able speaker: or فَيِّهٌ signifies good in speech; a good speaker: (TA:) or both signify good and eloquent in speech; as though taken from الفَوَهُ meaning “ width of the mouth: ” (IAar, TA:) or having an inordinate desire, or appetite, for food; a vehement eater; (K, TA;) applied to a man and to other than man: (TA:) and the latter (فَيِّهٌ), having an inordinate and insatiable desire, or appetite, for food: (TA:) and this also signifies a man who eats much; syn. أَكُولٌ; (S, K;) and so does ↓ مُسْتَفِيهٌ: (K [in some copies of which, كوفى is strangely put in the place of اكول in the explanation here given]:) or ↓ مُسْتَفِيهٌ signifies a man eating vehemently after scantiness, (S,) or after weakness: (thus in a copy of the S:) and مُفَوَّهٌ is also expl. as meaning a man who eats vehemently. (TA.) And one says مِنْطِيقٌ مُفَوَّهٌ (K, TA) meaning [Very] eloquent in speech: (TA:) and مَنْطِقٌ مُفَوَّهٌ (K, TA) Good, or excel-lent, speech, or diction. (TA.) A2: شَرَابٌ مُفَوَّهٌ means [Beverage, or wine,] perfumed (K, TA.) with [the odoriferous substances called] أَفَاوِيهُ [pl. pl. of فُوهُ, q. v.]. (TA.) صَرْبٌ and ↓ صَرَبٌ (S, M, &c.) Sour milk (M, Mgh, K) that has been collected in a skin: (M, K:) or very sour milk: (S, Msb:) or milk that has been collected in a skin for some days so that it has become very sour: (As, M:) n. un. ↓ صَرْبَةٌ and ↓ صَرَبَةٌ: (M, TA:) صِرَابٌ, occurring in some of the Expositions of the Jámi' es-Sagheer, is a mistranscription; or it may be a pl. of صَرْبٌ accord. to the analogy of حَبْلٌ and حِبَالٌ, and رَمْلٌ and رِمَالٌ. (Mgh.) One says, تَزْوِى ↓ جَآءَنَا بَصَرْبَةٍ

الوَجْهَ [He brought us some sour milk, or very sour milk, that had been collected in a skin, making the face to contract in wrinkles]. (S.) [SM here adds,] Az says that الصَّرْمُ is like الصَّرْبُ, and is better known. (TA. 1 دَهَنَهُ, (S, Mgh, Msb, K, &c.,) aor. ـُ (S, Msb,) inf. n. دَهْنٌ (MA, Msb, K, KL) and دَهْنَةٌ, (K,) He anointed it (MA, Mgh, Msb, * KL) with دُهْن, (Mgh, Msb,) i. e., (Msb,) with oil (MA, Msb, KL) &c.; (Msb;) [oiled it; or greased it;] namely, his head, (MA, Mgh,) or his mustache, (Mgh,) or his hair, &c.: (Msb:) or he moistened it; namely, his head, &c.: (K:) and ↓ دهّنهُ, inf. n. تَدْهِينٌ signifies the same [but app. in an intensive sense, or as applying to many objects]: (TA:) and إِدْهَانٌ [inf. n. of ↓ أَدْهَنَ] is like تَدْهِينٌ. دِهَانٌ A red hide. (S, K. [See also دَهِينٌ.]) Hence, in the Kur [lv. 37], فَكَانَتْ وَرْدَةً كَالدِّهَانِ, i. e. And shall become red, (S,) or of a rosecolour, (Zj, L in art. ورد,) or of a red colour inclining to yellow, (L in that art.,) like the red hide: (S, Bd, Jel:) or like the hide that is of a pure red colour: (TA:) or like that [oil] with which one anoints; see دُهْنٌ: or it is pl. of دُهْنٌ: (Bd:) [thus] it means, accord. to Aboo-Is-hák [Zj], and shall become [red, &c., and] of various colours, by reason of the very great terror, like divers oils: or, accord. to Er-Rághib, like the dregs of oil, or of olive-oil; for this is another signification of الدهان. (TA.) b2: Also A slippery place. (JK, K.) And A smooth road: or long and smooth. (TA.) دَهِينٌ [Anointed with oil, &c.; i. q. ↓ مَدْهُونٌ and مَدْهُونَةٌ]. You say لِحْيَةٌ دَهِينٌ (K) and دَهِينَةٌ (TA) and ↓ دَاهِنٌ, (K,) [the last, properly, a possessive epithet,] meaning مَدْهُونَةٌ [i. e. A beard anointed with oil, &c.]. (JK.) مُدْهُنٌ, with damm, (S, Msb, K, &c.,) only, (S,) to the م and ه, (Msb, TA,) extr [in form], (Fr, TA,) for by rule it should be مِدْهَنٌ, (Msb,) or it was مِدْهَنٌ originally, (Lth, TA,) The utensil (آلَة) for دُهْن [or oil, &c.]; (K, TA;) i. e. (TA) the thing [or pot or vase] in which دُهْن is put; (T, Msb, TA;) a flask, or phial, (قَارُورَة,) for دُهْن: (S, K:) [and ↓ مُدْهُنَةٌ, occurring in this art. and in art. وقب in the TA, signifies the same:] pl. مَدَاهِنُ. (S.) b2: And (tropical:) A place, (M, K, TA,) or a small hollow or cavity, in a mountain, (S, TA,) in which water remains and collects, or collects and stagnates: (S, M, K, TA:) or any place excavated by a torrent: (K:) or water exuding in stone. قَوْمٌ مُدَهَّنُونَ (tropical:) A people, or company of men, upon whom are [visible] the traces of ease and plenty, welfare, or well-being. 1 خَارَ, aor. ـُ (S, A, Mgh,) inf. n. خُوَارٌ (JK, S, A, Mgh, K *) and خَوْرٌ, (JK,) He (a bull) uttered his cry; [i. e. lowed, or bellowed;] (Lth, JK, S, A, Mgh, K;) this being its primary signification: (Er-Rághib:) the inf. n. خوار, used agreeably with this explanation, occurs in the Kur xx. 90 [and vii. 146]: (S:) it signifies the loud crying [i. e. the lowing or bellowing] of a cow and of a calf: (Lth:) and the crying [i. e. bleating] of sheep, or that of goats, and of gazelles, (K,) and of any beast: (Er-Rághib:) and the sounding [i. e. whizzing] of arrows: (K:) of any of these, you say, خَارَ, aor. and inf. n. as above. (TA.) [Hence,] لَهُ صَوْتٌ كَخُوَارِ الثَّوْرِ He has a voice like the bellowing of the bull. (A.) b2: [and hence, (see 10,)] خار عَلَيْهِ (tropical:) He bent, turned, or inclined, towards him. (A.) A2: خار, aor. as above, (S, Msb,) inf. n. خُؤُورٌ, (S, K, [for which Golius, as on these authorities, substitutes خُؤُورَةٌ,]) said of a man, (S,) and of anything, (TA,) He, or it, was, or became, weak, or feeble, (S, Msb, K,) and languid; (S, TA;) as also خَوِرَ, (TA,) aor. ـْ (JK,) inf. n. خَوَرٌ; (S, * K, * TA;) and ↓ خِوِّر, (JK, TA,) inf. n. تَخْوِيرٌ. (K.) خار and خَوِرَ both signify It was soft, or fragile; said of anything, like a reed. (JK.) It is said in a trad. of 'Omar, لَنْ يَخُورَ قَوِىٌّ مَا دَامَ صَاحِبُهَا بَنْزِعُ وَيَنْزُو, meaning A possessor of strength (صَاحِبُ قُوَّةٍ) will not be weak as long as he can pull his bow and leap to his beast. (TA.) In a camel that is drinking, خَوَرٌ denotes, or implies, a quality that is praised; i. e. Patient enduring of thirst and fatigue: and a quality dispraised; i. e. the lacking patience to endure thirst and fatigue. (TA.) b2: Also, said of heat, (S, TA,) and of cold, inf. n. خُؤُورٌ and خُؤُورَةٌ, (JK,) (tropical:) It became faint; it remitted, or abated; (JK, S, TA;) and so خَوِرَ, inf. n. خَوَرٌ; and ↓ خوّر. (TA.) And خار عَنَّا, said of cold, It ceased from us; quitted us. (A.) A3: خَارَهُ, (JK, S,) inf. n. خَوْرٌ, (S, K,) He hit, or hurt, his خَوْرَان, (JK, S, K, *) in thrusting or piercing him with a spear or the like. (JK, S.) 2 خوّر: see 1, in two places.

A2: خوّرهُ He attributed to him weakness, or feebleness, and languor. (TA.) 4 اخارهُ, (S, K,) inf. n. إِخَارَةٌ, (S,) [app., in its' primary acceptation, He caused him to utter a cry. (See 10.) b2: And hence,] (assumed tropical:) He bent, turned, or inclined, him, or it. (S, K.) You say, أَخَرْنَا المَطَايَا إِلَى مَوْضِعِ كَذَا (assumed tropical:) We bent, or turned, the riding-camels to such a place. (S.) 6 تخاورتِ الثِّيرَانُ The bulls lowed, or bellowed, one to another. (A.) 10 استخارها [He endeavoured to make her (namely, a gazelle, or a wild cow,) to utter her cry; or] he uttered a cry in order that she should do the same. (TA.) The sportsman, coming to a place in which he thinks the young one of a gazelle or [wild] cow to be, utters a cry like that of her young one; and the mother, hearing it, if she have a young one, thinks the cry to be that of her young one, and follows the cry. (S, * TA.) b2: Hence, (S, TA,) استخارهُ (tropical:) He endeavoured to make him bend, turn, or incline: (JK, S, A, K, TA:) and he called him to him: and he interrogated him; or desired him to speak; syn. اِسْتَنْطَقَهُ: namely, a man. (JK.) [استخار المَنْزِلَ is explained in the L and K as meaning اِسْتَنْظَفَهُ: to which is added in the TA, كأنّه طلب خيره, with the remark that it should therefore properly be mentioned in art. خير: but an explanation in the sentence immediately preceding, and a verse cited below, evidently show that استنظفه is a mistranscription for اِسْتَنْطَقَهُ, and that خيره should be خَبَرَهُ: so that the meaning is He interrogated the place of abode.] The author of the L cites, as an ex., the saying of El-Kumeyt, وَلَنْ يَسْتَخِيرُ رُسُومَ الدِّيَارِ لِعَوْلَتِهِ ذُو الصِّبَى المُعوِلُ [And he who is affected with youthful amorousness, wailing, will not ask the remains, or traces, of the dwellings to reply to his wailing: but for لِعَوْلَتِهِ I would rather read بِعَوْلَتِهِ; i. e., will not interrogate them with his wailing]. (TA.) b3: استخار الضَّبَّ, (K, TA, [in some copies of the K, erroneously, الضَّبُعَ,]) and اليَرْبُوعَ, (TA,) He placed a piece of wood in the hole of the burrow of the [lizard called] ضبّ, (K, TA,) and of the jerboa, i. e. in the قَاصِعَآء, (TA,) in order that it should come forth from another place, (K, TA,) i. e. the نَافِقَآء, so that he might catch it. (TA.) Lth falsely assigns the act of الاِسْتِخَارَة to the ضبّ and the jerboa. (Az, TA.) خَوْرٌ Low, or depressed, ground or land, (JK, S, K,) between two elevated parts; (JK, S;) like غَورٌ: (TA:) an inlet (lit. a neck) from a sea or large river, entering into the land: (Sh:) a place, or channel, where water pours into a sea or large river: (JK, K:) or a wide place or channel, where waters pour, running into a sea or large river; (TA:) or (as in the TA, but in the K “ and,”) a canal, or cut, from a sea or large river: (K, TA:) and i. q. رَحَبَةٌ [app. as meaning the part in which the water flows from the two sides of a valley]: (JK:) pl. خُؤُورٌ. (TA.) خُورٌ a pl. of خَوَّارَةٌ, (S, K,) contr. to rule; (MF, TA;) and of خَوّار in the phrase خَوّارُ العِنَانِ. (JK, TA.) See خَوَّارٌ, in five places.

خُورَةٌ الإِبِلِ, with damm, [app. originally خُيْرَة,] The best of camels, or of the camels; (IAar, K;) [see خَيْرٌ, (in art. خير,) near the end of the paragraph;] and so ↓ خُوَارُهَا, and مِنْهَا ↓ الخُورَى. (Fr, TA.) خُورَى fem. of أَخْيَرُ, and properly belonging to art. خير: see what next precedes.

خَوْرَانٌ The مَبْعَرٌ [or rectum], which comprises the حِتَار [or anus, with the extremities of its skin,] of the صُلْب [or back], (K,) of a man &c.: (TA:) or the passage of the رَوْث [or dung, properly of a horse or the like, but here app. meaning of a man also]: (S:) or the head [or extremity] of the مَبْعَرَة [or rectum]: or the part in which is the دُبُر [or anus]: (K:) or the دُبُر [or anus] itself; (TA;) or it has this meaning also; (JK;) and so ↓ خَوَّارَةٌ, syn. اِسْتٌ; (K;) the دُبُر being so called because it is like a depressed place between two hills: (TA: [see خَوْرٌ:]) or the gap in which is the دُبُر [or anus] of a man; and that in which is the قُبُل [or anterior pudendum] of a woman: (TA:) or the gap in which is the دُبُر and the place of the ذَكَر and that of the قُبُل of the woman: (Zj in his “ Khalk el-Insán: ”) pl. خَوْرَانَاتٌ and خَوَارِين: (K:) the former pl. of a form which any sing. subst. not significant of a human being may receive. (TA.) خُوَارٌ an inf. n. of خَارَ as explained in the first sentence in this art. (S, A, &c.) A2: خُوَارُ الإِبِلُ: see خُورَة.

خَوَّارٌ Weak, or feeble; (JK, S, Msb, K;) applied to a man; (S;) as also ↓ خَائِرٌ, (K,) and ↓ خَؤُورٌ: (AHeyth:) a weak man, who cannot endure difficulty or distress: (Lth:) and (tropical:) cowardly, or a coward: (A:) pl. of the first خَوَّارُونَ, and of the third خُوَرَةٌ. (AHeyth.) Applied to a camel, Slender (رَقِيق) and beautiful: (K, TA: [for الحِسِّ in the CK, I read الحَسَنُ, as in other copies of the K and in the TA:]) and the fem., with ة, applied to a she-camel, having soft flesh and fragile bones: (TA:) pl. of the former [and of the latter] خَوَّارَاتٌ. (K.) Applied to a spear, Weak: (S:) not hard: (Msb:) or weak and soft; (TA;) and in the same sense applied to an arrow, (A, TA,) as also ↓ خَؤُورٌ; (TA;) and so the fem. of the former, with ة, applied to a reed or cane (قَصَبَةٌ); (A, TA;) and to land or ground (أَرْضٌ) as meaning weak, (S,) or soft: (A, Msb:) pl. ↓ خُورٌ. (S.) And خَوَّارُ العِنَانِ (tropical:) A horse (A) that turns easily, (JK, A, K,) and runs much: (K:) pl. ↓ خُورٌ. (JK, TA.) And بَكْرَةٌ خَوَّارَةٌ (assumed tropical:) A sheave of a pulley of which the pin runs [or turns] easily in the checks. (TA.) And الحَشَايَا ↓ خُورُ Beds, or the like, stuffed with soft substances. (TA, from a trad.) And خَوَّارُ الصَّفَا Smooth stones that sound [when struck] by reason of their hardness. (IAar.) And زَنْدٌ خَوَّارٌ A زند [q. v.] that emits much fire; syn. قَدَّاحٌ. (AHeyth, K.) [Hence,] هُوَ خَوَّارُ العُودِ [meaning (assumed tropical:) He is lavish when asked]: an expression of dispraise. (TA in art. كسر.) [Hence also,] خَوَّارَةٌ (tropical:) A she-camel abounding with milk; pl. ↓ خُورٌ; (S, K, TA;) which is contr. to rule, and said by MF to be without a parallel: (TA:) and so a ewe or she-goat: (TA:) or a she-camel whose milk flows easily; and so a ewe or she-goat: (A:) or a she-camel thin-skinned, and abounding with milk: (AHeyth:) or one that is of a hue between dustcolour and red, with a thin skin; and such is the most abundant in milk: (Kf:) or of a red colour inclining to dust-colour, thin-skinned, and having long fur with [coarse] hair protruding through it, longer than the rest: such a she-camel is less hardy than others, but abounds with milk. (ISk.) Also (tropical:) A palm-tree (نَخْلَةٌ) that bears much fruit. 1 خَارَ, aor. ـِ (K,) inf. n. خَيْرٌ, (TA,) He (a man, TA) was, or became, possessed of خَيْر [or good, &c.]. (K, TA.) b2: [He was, or be came, good: and he did good: contr. of شَرَّ.] You say, خِرْتَ يَا رَجُلُ [Thou hast been good; or thou hast done good, or well; O man]. (S.) And خَارَاللّٰهُ لَكَ فِى هٰذَا الأَمْرِ [May God do good to thee, bless thee, prosper thee, or favour thee, in this affair: or] may God cause thee to have, or appoint to thee, good in this affair: (K:) or may God choose for thee the better thing [in this affair]. (A, K.) 4 مَا أَخْيَرَ فُلَانًا, (A,) and ↓ مَا خَيْرَهُ, which latter is extr. [with respect to form, though more commonly used than the former], (TA,) [How good is such a one!] phrases similar to مَاأَشَّرَهُ and مَا شَّرَهُ [which have the contr. meaning]. (TA.) اللَّبَنَ لِلْمَرِيضِ ↓ مَا خَيْرَ [How good is milk for the diseased!], (K, * TA,) with nasb to the ر and ن, is an expression of wonder: (K:) it was said to Khalaf El-Ahmar, by an Arab of the desert, in the presence of Aboo-Zeyd; whereupon Khalaf said to him, “What a good word, if thou hadst not defiled it by mentioning it to the [common] people! ” and Aboo-Zeyd returned to his companions, and desired them, when Khalaf ElAhmar should come, to say, all together, these words (ما خير اللبن للمريض), [in order to vex him], and they did so. (TA.) 5 تخيّر, as an intrans. v.: see 2.

A2: As a trans. v.: see 8.6 تخايروا فِيهِ إِلَى حَكَمٍ They contended together for superior goodness, or for excellence, in it, or with respect to it, appealing to a judge, or an arbiter. (A.) 8 اختارهُ; and ↓ تخيّرهُ, (S, * A, Mgh, Msb, K,) inf. n. [or rather quasi-inf. n.] ↓ خِيَرَةٌ, said by IAth to be the only instance of the kind except طِيَرَةٌ; (TA voce تَطَيَّرَ;) and ↓ استخارهُ; (A;) and ↓ خَارَهُ; (K;) He chose, made choice of. selected, elected, or preferred, him, or it. It is said in the Kur [vii. 154], وَاخْتَارَ مُوسَى قَوْمِهِ سَبْعِينَ رَجُلًا [And Moses chose from his people seventy men]. (TA.) وَلَقَدِ اخْتَرْنَاهُمْ عَلَى عِلْمٍ, in the Kur [xliv. 31, Verily we have chosen them with knowledge], may be indicative of God's producing good, or of his preferring them before others. (TA.) 10 استخار He sought, desired, or asked for, خِيرَة (S, Msb, K) or خِيَرَة (as in some copies of the K) [i. e. the blessing, prospering, or favour, of God; &c.]. [And it is trans.; for] one says, اِسْتَخِرِ اللّٰهَ يَخِرْ لَكَ [Desire thou, or ask thou for, the blessing, prospering, or favour, of God; &c.; and He will bless, prosper, or favour, thee; &c.]. (S.) And اِسْتَخَرْتُ اللّٰهَ فِيهِ فَخَارَ لِى I desired, or asked, of God, the better of the two things, [or rather the better in it, meaning a case, or an affair,] and He chose it for me. خَيْرٌ [Good, moral or physical; anything that is good, real or ideal, and actual or potential; and, being originally an inf. n., used as sing and pl.;] a thing that all desire; such as intelligence, for instance, and equity; (Er-Rághib, and so in some copies of the K;) [or goodness;] and excellence; and what is profitable or useful; benefit; (Er-Rághib;) contr. of شَرٌّ: (S, A, Msb:) pl. خُيُورٌ, (Msb, K,) and also, accord. to the Msb, ↓ خِيَارٌ: (TA:) [but this latter seems to be properly pl. only of خَيْرٌ used as an epithet (see below) and as a noun denoting the comparative and superlative degrees: it may however be used as an epithet in which the quality of a subst. is predominant:] خير is of two kinds: namely, absolute خير, which is what is desired in all circumstances and by every person: and what is خير [or good] to one and شرّ [or evil] to another; as, for instance, (Er-Rághib,) wealth, or property: (Zj, L in art. شد, Er-Rághib, K:) it has this last signification, namely wealth, or property, in the Kur, ii. 176 (S, TA) and ii. 274 and xxiv. 33 and xli. 49: or in the first and second of these instances it is thus called to imply the meaning of wealth, or property, that has been collected in a praiseworthy manner, or it means much wealth or property; and this is its meaning in the first of the instances mentioned above, agreeably with a trad. of 'Alee; and also in the Kur, c. 8: (TA:) [being used as a pl. (as well as a sing.), it may be also rendered good things:] and it is also used by the Arabs to signify horses; (K, * TA;) and has this meaning in the Kur, xxxviii. 31: (TA:) [it is often best rendered good fortune; prosperity; welfare; wellbeing; weal; happiness; or a good state or condition: and sometimes bounty, or beneficence.] رَجُلٌ قَلِيلُ الخَيْرِ means [A man possessing little, or no, good; possessing few, or no, good things; or poor: and in whom is little, or no, good or goodness; or niggardly: and also] a man who does little good: (TA in art. عص:) or [who does no good;] who is not near to doing good; denoting the nonexistence of good in him. (Msb in art. قل.) [Thus it sometimes means the same as رَجُلٌ لَا خَيْرَ فِيهِ A man in whom is no good or goodness; devoid of goodness; worthless.] And قِلَّةُ خَيْرٍ means Poverty: and also niggardliness. (A and TA in art. جحد.) هُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الخَيْرِ وَالخِيرِ is explained voce خِيرٌ.

عَلَىيَدَىِ الخَيْرِ وَاليُمْنِ [May it be with the aid of good fortune and prosperity] is a prayer used with respect to a marriage. (A 'Obeyd, TA.) And إِنَّكَ مَا وَخَيْرًا means مَعَ خَيْرٍ, i. e., Mayest thou meet with, or attain, good. (K.) b2: خَيْرٌ in the phrase فُلَانٌ خَيْرٌ resembles an epithet [like ↓ خَيِّرٌ, and signifies Good; or possessing good]; (Akh, S;) therefore the fem. is خَيْرَةٌ, of which the pl. is خَيْرَاتٌ, (Akh, S, Msb, *) as occurring in the Kur, lv. 70; and they do not [there] mean by it [the comparative or superlative signification of the measure] أَفْعَلُ: (Akh, S:) you say ↓ رَجُلٌ خَيِّرٌ, (S, A, Msb,) meaning [A good man; or] a man possessing خَيْر [or good]; (Msb;) and رَجُلٌ خَيْرٌ: (S:) and in like manner, ↓ اِمْرَأَةٌ خَيِّرَةٌ and خَيْرَةٌ, (S, Msb,) meaning [A good woman; or] a woman excellent in beauty and disposition: (Msb:) or خَيْرٌ and ↓ خَيِّرٌ signify possessing much خَيْر [or good], (K,) applied to a man; (TA;) and in the same sense you say ↓ رَجُلٌ خَيْرَى, and ↓ خُورَى, and ↓ خِيَرى: and the fem. of the first is خَيْرَةٌ; and of the second, ↓ خَيِّرَةٌ: (K:) and the pl. [of pauc.] (of the first, TA) is أَخْيَارٌ, and [of mult.] خِيَارٌ: (A, Msb, K:) you say also خِيَارُ المَالِ, meaning The excellent of the camels or the like: (Msb, K:) and in like manner you say of men &c.: (TA:) [see also below:] and the fem. is خَيْرَةٌ, of which the pl. is خَيْرَاتٌ: (Msb:) خِيَارٌ is contr. of أَشْرَارٌ, (S, Mgh,) [thus] used as an epithet: (Mgh:) and ↓ خَيْرَةٌ [used as a subst.] signifies anything excellent; and the pl. thereof in this sense, خَيْرَاتٌ, occurs in the Kur, ix. 89: (S:) or خَيْرٌ, (K,) or the fem. خَيْرَةٌ, (Lth,) or each, (K.) signifies excellent in beauty: (Lth, K:) and ↓ خَيِّرٌ and خَيِّرَةٌ signify excellent in righteousness (Lth, K) and religion: (K:) or there is no difference in the opinion of the lexicologists [in general] between خَيْرَةٌ and ↓ خَيِّرَةٌ: (Az:) accord. to Zj, خَيْرَاتٌ and ↓ خَيِّرَاتٌ, both occurring in different readings of the Kur, lv. 70, signify good in dispositions: accord. to Khálid Ibn-Jembeh, خَيْرَةٌ, applied to a woman, signifies generous in race, exalted in rank or quality or reputation, goodly in face, good in disposition, possessing much wealth, who, if she bring forth, brings forth a generous child: (TA:) [↓ خِيَارٌ is also applied as an epithet to a sing. subst., either masc. or fem.:] you say جَمَلٌ خِيَارٌ and نَاقَةٌ خِيَارٌ, meaning A he-camel [that is excellent or] excellent and brisk and so a she-camel. In the saying لَعَمَرُ أَبِيكَ الخَيْرُ, the word خَيْر is in the nom. case as an epithet of عَمْر; [so that the phrase lit. means By the good life of thy father;] but properly it should be لَعَمْرُ أَبِيكَ الخَيْرِ [By the life of thy good father]: and the like is said with شَرّ. b3: خَيْرٌ is also used to denote superiority: one says, هٰذَا خَيْرٌ مِنْ هٰذَا This is better than this: and in the dial. of the Benoo-'Ámir, ↓ هٰذَا أَخْيَرُ مِنْ هٰذَا, with أ, and in like manner, أَشَّرُ; but the rest of the Arabs drop the أ in each case: (Msb:) you say, مِنْكَ ↓ هُوَ أَخْيَرُ [He is better than thou], and in like manner, أَشَّرُ مِنْكَ; and هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ, and in like manner, شَرٌّ مِنْكَ; and, [using the dim. form of خَيْرٌ,] مِنْكَ ↓ خُيَيْرٌ, and in like manner, شُرَيْرٌ مِنْكَ. Youalso say, when you mean to express the signification of superiority, فُلَانَةٌ خَيْرُ النَّاسِ [Such a woman is the best of mankind]; but not خَيْرَةُ: [see, however, what will be found cited hereafter from the K,] and فُلَانٌ خَيْرُ النَّاسِ [Such a man is the best of mankind]; but not ↓ أَخْيَرُ [unless in the dial. of the Benoo-'Ámir]: and [it is said that] خَيْرُ when thus used does not assume the dual form nor the pl., because it has the signification of [the measure] أَفْعَلُ: for though a poet uses the dual form, he uses it as a contraction of the dual of خَيِّرٌ, like مَيْتٌ and مَيِّتٌ, and هَيْنٌ and هَيِّنٌ: (S:) [but. this remark in the S is incorrect: for both خَيْر and ↓ أَخْيَر, when used in such phrases as those to which J here refers, have pl. forms of frequent occurrence, and of which examples will be found below; and, as is said by I 'Ak (p. 239), and by many other grammarians, you may say, الزَّيْدَانِ أَفْضَلَا القَوْمِ, and الزَّيْدُونَ أَفْضَلُو القَوْمِ and أَفَاضِلُ القَوْمِ, and also هِنْدُ فُضْلَىالنِّسَآءِ, &c.; and such concordance is found in the Kur, vi. 123; and is even said by many to be more chaste than the mode prescribed by J:] it is said in the K, that you say, ↓ هُوَ أَخْيَرُ مِنْكَ, like خَيْرُ; and when you mean the signification of superiority, you say فُلَانٌ خَيْرَةٌ النَّاسِ, with ة, and فُلَانَةُ خَيْرُهُمْ, without ة: but [SM says,] I know not how this is; for in the S is said what is different from this, and in like manner by Z in several places in the Ksh; and what is most strange is, that the author of the K quotes in the B the passage of J [from the S], and adopts the opinion of the leading authorities [as given in the S]: (TA:) or you say, فُلَانَةُ الخَيْرَةُ مِنَ المَرْأَتَيْنِ [Such a woman is the better of the two women]: and هِىَ الخَيْرَةُ, and ↓ الخِيرَةُ, [so in the TA, but in the CK الخِيَرَةُ,] and ↓ الخِيرَى, and ↓ الخُورَى, [the last being fem. of أَخْيَرُ, originally خُيْرَى, and so, app., the last but one, She is the better, or best:] (K:) and [using the dim. form of خَيْرٌ] you say, أَهْلِهِ ↓ هُوَ خُيَيْرُ [He is the best of his family]: (Ibn-Buzurj, TA:) one says also, to one coming from a journey, خَيْرَ مَا رُدَّ فِى أَهْلٍ

وَمَالٍ, meaning May God make that with which thou comest [back] to be the best of what is brought back by the absent with family and property; (As, Meyd, TA;) or, as some relate it, خَيْرُ, i. e. رَدُّكَ خَيْرُ رَدٍّ [may thy bringing back be the best bringing back]; and فى is used in the sense of مَعَ: (Meyd:) [أَخْيَارٌ is pl. of pauc., and خِيَارٌ pl. of mult., and so app. is خِيرَانٌ, of خَيْرٌ thus used; and ↓ أَخَايِرُ is pl. of أَخْيَرُ, and so is أَخْيَرُونَ applied to rational beings: in the TA, أَخَايِرُ is said to be a pl. pl. of أَخْيَرُ, and so خِيرَانٌ; but this is app. a mistake, probably of transcription:] you say رَجُلٌ مِنْ خِيَارِ النَّاسِ and أَخْيَارِهِمْ and ↓ أَخَايِرِهِمْ [A man of the best of mankind]: (A, TA:) and لَكَ خِيَارُ هٰذِهِ الإِبِلِ, and ↓ خِيرَتُهَا, [Thine are, or is, or shall be, the best of these camels,] alike with respect to a sing. and a pl.: (TA:) and إِبِلِهِ ↓ نَحَرَ خِيرَةَ and إِبِلِهِ ↓ خُورَةَ [He slaughtered the best of his camels]: (IAar, TA:) and ↓ هُمُ الأَخْيَرُونَ [They (meaning men) are the better, or best]. (Ibn-Buzurj, TA.) A2: مَا خَيْرَ for مَا أَخْيَرَ: see 4, in two places.

A3: خَيْرُ بَوَّآءُ [from the Persian خِيرْبُوَا Lesser cardamom;] a kind of small grain, resembling the قَاقُلَّة [or common cardamom], (K,) of sweet odour. (TA.) خِيرٌ Generousness; generosity; (S, A, Msb, K;) liberality; munificence. (Msb.) You say, فُلَانٌ ذُو خِيرٍ Such a one is a possessor of generousness, or generosity, &c. (Msb.) And هُوَ مِنْ وَالخِيرِ ↓ أَهْلِ الخَيْرِ [He is of the people of good, or of wealth, &c., and of generosity]. (A.) b2: Eminence; elevated state or condition; nobility. (IAar, K.) b3: Origin. (Lh, K.) b4: Nature, or disposition. (A, K.) You say, هُوَ كَرِيمُ الخِيرِ He is generous in nature, or disposition. (A.) b5: Form, aspect, or appearance; figure, person, mien, feature, or lineaments; guise, or external state or condition; or the like; syn. هَيْئَةٌ. (Lh, K.) خُورَةٌ [app. originally خُيْرَةٌ]: see خَيْرٌ, near the end of the paragraph; and see also art. خور.

خَيْرَةٌ fem. of خَيْرٌ [q. v.] used as an epithet: pl. خَيْرَاتٌ. (Akh, S, Msb.) b2: [Also, used as a subst., or as an epithet in which the quality of a subst. is predominant, A good thing, of any kind: a good quality; an excellency: and a good act or action: &c.: pl. as above:] see خَيْرٌ, in the former half of the paragraph.

(A.) خِيَرَةٌ and ↓ خِيرَةٌ (of which the former is the better known, TA) are substs. from اِخْتَارَهُ, (K,) or from اِخْتَارَهُ اللّٰهُ, (S,) both signifying A thing, man, or beast, and things, &c, that one chooses: (TA:) or [a thing, &c.,] chosen, selected, or elected: (Mgh:) as in the saying, مُحَمَّدُ خِيَرَةُ اللّٰهِ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ and ↓ خِيرَتُهُ [Mohammad is the chosen, or elect, of God, from his creatures]: (S, Mgh: *) or ↓ خِيرَةٌ is a subst. from الاِخْتِيَارٌ, like فِدْيَةٌ from الاِفْتِدَآءُ; and خِيَرَةٌ is syn. with خِيَارٌ and اِخْتِيَارٌ; or is from تَخَيَّرْتُ الشَّىْءَ: or, as some say, خِيرَةٌ and خِيَرَةٌ are syn.: (Msb:) see 8; and see also خِيَارٌ: and ↓ هٰذِهِ خِيرَتِى (Msb, TA) or خِيَرَتِى (TA) means This is what I choose; (Msb, (TA;) and so هٰذَا خيرتى: and هٰؤُلَآءِ خيرتى

خَيْرِىٌّ Of, or relating to, خَيْر, or good, &c.]

خِيرِىٌّ Of, or relating to, or possessing, generousness, generosity, liberality, or munificence. (Msb.) A2: And hence, (Msb,) or [thus applied] it is an arabicized word, (S,) [from the Persian خِيرِىْ,] The مَنْثُور [or gilliflower:] but generally applied to the yellow species thereof; [so in the present day;] for it is this from which is extracted its oil, which is an ingredient in medicines. خِيَارٌ a subst. from الاِخْتِيَارُ; (S, Mgh, K;) meaning Choice, or option; (Msb;) and so ↓ خِيَرَةٌ in the Kur [xxviii. 68], مَاكَانَ لَهُمُ الخِيَرَةُ They have not choice, or option; (Mgh;) or the meaning of these words is, it is not for them to choose in preference to God; (Fr, Zj;) and so, accord. to Lth, ↓ خِيرَةٌ, as being an inf. n. [or rather a quasi-inf. n., though this seems doubtful,] of اختار. (TA.) You say, إِنَّ فِى الشَّرِّ خِيَارًا [Verily in evil there is a choice, or an option]; i. e. what may be chosen: a prov. (TA.) And أَنْتَ بِالخِيَارٍ and ↓ بِالْمُخْتَارِ [in some copies of the K بالمخيار, which, as is said in the TA, is a mistranscription, Thou hast the choice, or option]; i. e. choose thou what thou wilt. (K.) And البَيْعُ صَفْقَةٌ أَوْ خِيَارٌ Selling is decisive or with the option of returning. (Mgh in art. صفق.) Hence, خِيَارُ الرُّؤْيَةِ The choice of returning [on seeing it] a thing which one has purchased without seeing it. (Mgh, * Msb, * KT.) And خِيَارُ المَجْلِسِ [The choice of returning a thing purchased while sitting with the seller]. (TA.) And خِيَارُ العَيْبِ [and النَّقِيصَةِ] The choice of returning a thing to the seller when it has a fault, a defect, or an imperfection. (KT.) And خِيَارُ الشَّرْطِ The choice of returning a thing purchased when one of the two contracting parties has made it a condition that he may do so within three days or less. (KT.) And خِيَارُ التَّعْيِينِ The choice of specifying [ for instance] one of two garments, or pieces of cloth, which one has purchased for ten pieces [of money, or some other sum,] on the condition of so doing. خَيِّرٌ, and its fem. خَيِّرَةٌ, and pl. fem. خَيِّرَاتٌ: see خَيْرٌ, (used as an epithet,) in eight places, in the former half of the paragraph.

خَائِرٌ [Doing good, or well: &c.:] act. part. n. of خَارَ. (S, TA.) أَخْيَرُ, and its pls. أَخَايِرُ and أَحْيَرُونَ: see خَيْرٌ, in eight places, in the latter half of the paragraph.

اِخْتِيَارِىٌّ [Of, or relating to, the will, or choice].

صِفَةٌ اخْتِيَارِيَّةٌ [meaning A quality which originates from, or depends upon, the will, or choice, i. e. an acquired quality,] is opposed to خِلْقِيَّةٌ. خلق

1 خَلْقٌ signifies The act of measuring; or determining the measure, proportion, or the like, of a thing; and the making a thing by measure, or according to the measure of another thing; or proportioning a thing to another thing; syn. تَقْدِيرٌ: (S, Msb, K, TA, and Bd in ii. 19:) this is the primary meaning. (Msb, TA, and Bd ubi suprà.) You say, خَلَقَ الأَدِيمِ, (S, Msb, K,) aor. ـُ (S, TA,) inf. n. خَلْقٌ (JK, S, Msb, K) and خَلْقَةٌ, (K,) He measured, or proportioned, (قَدَّرَ,) the hide, and sewed it: (K:) or he measured, or proportioned, (قدّر,) the hide, (JK, S, Msb, K,) لِمَا يُرِيدُ [for, or to, that which he desired to make of it], (JK, * TA,) or لِلسِّقَآءِ [for, or to, the skin for water or milk that he desired to make], (Msb,) before cutting it; (S, K, TA;) he measured it (قَاسَهُ) to cut from it a water-bag, or a water-skin, or a boot: (TA:) and in like manner, خَلَقَ النِّطَعَ he measured, &c., the نطع [q. v.]: when one cuts it, one says, فَرَاهُ. [(assumed tropical:) And thou indeed cuttest what thou hast measured; but some of the people measure, then will not cut]: (S, TA:) i. e., when thou determinest upon a thing thou executest it; but others determine upon that which they do not execute. (TA.) And El-Hajjáj said, مَا خَلَقْتُ إِلَّا قَرَيْتُ وَعَدْتُ

إِلَّا وَفَيْتُ [(assumed tropical:) I have not measured unless I have afterwards cut, and I have not promised unless I have afterwards performed]. (S.) أَخْلُقُ لَكُمْ مِنَ الطِّينِ كَهَيْئَةِ الطَّيْرِ, in the Kur iii. 43, means I will form for you, (Jel,) or I will make according to its proper measure (أُقَدِّرُ) for you, (Ksh, Bd,) and will form, (Bd,) of clay, a thing like the form of the bird, or of birds. (Ksh, Bd, Jel.) b2: [Hence,] it signifies also The bringing a thing into existence according to a certain measure, or proportion, and so as to make it equal [to another thing], or uniform [therewith]: (Ksh and Bd in ii. 19:) or the originating, or producing, [a thing] after a pattern, or model, which one has devised, not after the similitude of anything preexisting: this is another meaning which it has in the [classical] language of the Arabs. As the act of God, it signifies The originating, or bringing into being or existence, anything, not after the similitude of anything pre-existing: (TA:) [and the creating a thing; and thus it is generally best rendered; as meaning the bringing into existence from a state of non-existence: for]

خَلَقَ اللّٰهُ الشَّىْءَ, inf. n. خَلْقٌ, means God brought the thing into existence (Mgh, * TA) after it had not been: (TA:) [or خَلْقٌ, as the act of God, signifies the creating out of nothing: for it is said that] أُعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ, in the Kur ii. 19, means [Serve ye your Lord] who brought you into existence when ye were nothing. (Jel. [But in other passages of the Kur (vi. 2 &c.) it is said that God created (خَلَقَ) mankind of clay.]) Accord. to the A, خَلَقَ اللّٰهُ الخَلْقَ is a tropical phrase, meaning (tropical:) God brought into existence the creation, or created beings, or mankind, according to a predetermination (تَقْدِير) required by wisdom. (TA.) You say, هٰذِهِ خَلِيقَتُهُ الَّتِى خُلِقَ عَلَيْهَا and خُلِقَهَا and الَّتِى خُلِقَ: see خُلُقٌ. (Lh.) b3: [Hence, also,] خَلَقَ, (S, Msb, K, TA,) inf. n. خَلْقٌ, (TA,) (tropical:) He fabricated speech, or a saying or sentence, &c.: (K, * TA:) (tropical:) he forged (S, Msb, K, TA) a saying, (Msb,) or a lie, or a falsehood; (S, K, TA;) as also ↓ اختلق (S, Msb, K) and ↓ تخلّق. (S, K.) The Arabs say, حَدَّثَنَا فُلَانٌ بِأَحَادِيثِ الخَلْقِ (tropical:) Such a one related to us fictitious tales or stories, such as are deemed pretty, or such as are told by night [for entertainment]. (TA.) And it is said in the Kur [xxvi. 137], accord. to one reading, إِنْ هٰذَا إِلَّا خَلْقُ الأَوَّلِينَ, meaning (tropical:) This is nought but the lying, and forging, of the ancients. (TA.) and in the same [xxxviii. 6], ↓ إِنْ هٰذَا إِلَّا اخْتِلَاقٌ (tropical:) This is nought but forging, and lying. (TA.) b4: خَلَقَهُ, (K,) inf. n. خَلْقٌ, (TA,) also signifies He made it smooth; (K;) and so ↓ خلّقهُ; namely, an arrow, (S,) [and any other thing; for] of anything that has been made smooth one says, خُلِّقَ: (TA:) he made it equable, or even; namely, wood, or a stick; and so ↓ خلّقهُ, (K,) inf. n. تَخْلِيقٌ. (TA.) A2: خَلُقَتْ, inf. n. خَلَاقَةٌ, said of a woman, (JK, K,) She had [a goodly] body and make: (JK:) or she was, or became, goodly in make, or well made. (K. [In the CK, instead of حَسُنَ خَلْقُهَا, is put حَسُنَ خُلُقُها, meaning She was, or became, good in nature, &c.]) b2: And خَلِقَ, aor. ـَ (JK, K,) inf. n. خَلَقٌ; (JK, S; *) and خَلُقَ, aor. ـُ (K,) inf. n. خُلُوقَةٌ (TA) [and خَلَاقَةٌ, and perhaps خُلْقَةٌ q. v. infrà]; It (a thing) was, or became, smooth, (JK, K, TA,) and equable, or even. And it seems that one says, خَلِقَتِ الصَّخْرَةُ, inf. n. خَلَقٌ, q. v. infrà, meaning The rock was free from crack or fracture.] b3: And خَلُقَ, (JK, S, Msb, K,) aor. ـُ (K;) and خَلِقَ, aor. ـَ and خَلَقَ, aor. ـُ (K;) inf. n. (of the first, JK, S) خُلُوقَةٌ (JK, S, K) and خَلَاقَةٌ (JK, TA) and [of the second] خَلَقٌ (K) and [of the third] خُلُوقٌ; (JK, TA;) It (a garment) was, or became, old, and worn out; as also ↓ اخلق, (JK, S, Msb,) inf. n. إِخْلَاقٌ; (JK, TA;) and ↓ اخلولق. (TA.) [Hence,] دِيبَاجُهُ ↓ اخلق [lit.] His face became worn out; meaning (tropical:) it became used for mean service [so that it lost its grace, or was disgraced,] by his begging. (Har p. 476. [See also 4 below.]) [Hence also,] شَبَابَهُ ↓ اخلق (assumed tropical:) His youth declined, or departed. You say, خَلُقَ لذٰلِكَ [and بِذٰلِكَ (see خَلِيقٌ) He was, or became, adapted, disposed, &c., for that]; as though he were one of those in whom that was reckoned to be, and in whom the symptoms, signs, or tokens, thereof were seen. (S.) [And خَلُقَ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ ذٰلِكَ and بِأَنْ يفعل ذلك and لِأَنْ يفعل ذلك and مَنْ أَنْ يفعل ذلك He was, or became, adapted, &c., to do that: see خَلِيقٌ. And خَلُقَ may signify also It was, or became, probable; or likely to happen or be, or to have happened or been: see, again, خَلِيقٌ.]2 خلّقهُ: see 1, latter half, in two places.

A2: Also, (S, K,) inf. n. تَخْلِيقٌ, (K,) He rubbed him over with خَلُوق [q. v.]: (S:) or he perfumed him: (K:) or خلّقهُ بِخَلُوقٍ he perfumed him with خلوق (TA.) And خَلَّقْتُ المَرْأَةَ بِالخَلُوقِ [I perfumed the woman, or rubbed her over, with the خلوق]. (Msb.) And خَلَّقَتْ جِسْمَهَا She (a woman) rubbed her body and limbs over with خلوق. (TA.) 3 خَالَقَهُمْ, (K,) inf. n. مُخَالَقَةٌ, (TA,) He consorted [or comported himself] with them (K, TA) according to their natures, or moral characters or qualities; (TA;) or with good nature, or moral character or qualities: (K:) or خالقهم بِخُلُقٍ حَسَنٍ has this latter meaning. (TA.) One says, خَالِصِ المُؤْمِنَ وَخَالِقِ الفَاجِرَ, (S,) or وخالق الكَافِرَ, (TA,) [Act thou with reciprocal sincerity towards the believer, and comport thyself with the vitious, or the unbeliever, according to his nature, &c. See also 3 in art. خلص, where a similar saying is mentioned.]4 اخلق: see 1, latter part, in three places. b2: Also He had old and worn-out garments. (TA.) A2: اخلقهُ He wore it out; namely, a garment; the verb being trans. as well as intrans. (S, Msb, K.) [Hence,] اخلق الدَّهْرُ الشَّىْءَ (assumed tropical:) Time wore out, or wasted, the thing. (TA.) [Hence also,] one says to the beggar, أَخْلَقْتَ وَجْهَكَ (tropical:) (TA) [lit. Thou hast worn out thy face;] meaning (tropical:) thou hast used thy face for mean service [so that it has lost its grace, or has become disgraced]: and in like manner one says, أُخْلِقُ لَهُ دِيَبَاجَتِى, i. e. وَجْهِى: and يُخْلِقُ دِيبَاجَتَيْهِ (tropical:) He uses his face for mean service by begging. (Har pp. 15 and 476.) b2: Also, (K,) or اخلقهُ ثَوْبًا, (S,) He clad him with an old and worn-out garment. (S, K.) and اخلقِنى ثَوْبَهُ He gave me his old and worn-out garment. (JK.) And some say, اخلقهُ خَلَقًا He gave him an old and worn-out garment. (TA.) b3: And إِخْلَاقٌ الثَّوْبِ also signifies The cutting out of the garment: whence the saying, to UmmKhálid, أَبْلِى وَأَخْلِقِى [Wear out, and cut out new]; or, as some relate it, وَأَخْلِفِى, i. e., “and replace,” which is the more likely. (TA.) A3: مَا أَخْلَقَهُ and أَخْلِقْ بِهِ [have both of the following significations; though it is said that] the former signifies How likely is he, or it! (JK, TA;) and the latter, How well adapted or disposed, or how apt, meet, suited, suitable, fitted, fit, competent, or proper, or how worthy, is he, or it! i. q. أَجْدِرْ بِهِ and أَحْرِ بِهِ. (TA. [See 4 in arts. جدر and حرى.]) 5 تَخَلَّقَ see 1, a little after the middle of the paragraph. b2: تخلّق بِغَيْرِ خُلُقِهِ means He affected a خُلُق [or nature, &c.,] that was not his own. (S, K.) And تخلّق بِكَذَا He feigned such a thing, it not being in his nature, or not being created in him. (TA.) And تخلّق لِلنَّاسِ بِمَا لَيْسَ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ, occurring in a trad., [He affected, to men, a nature, &c., that did not belong to him; or] he pretended [to men] that there was in his nature فِى

خُلُقِهِ) that which was contrary to his real intention; (Mbr, TA;) or that which was contrary to what he had in his heart: the verb is similar to تَصَنَّعَ and تَجَمَّلَ. (TA.) A2: تخلّق بِهِ; (S, K;) and تخلّقت به; (Msb;) He was, or became, rubbed over, (S,) or perfumed; (K;) and she was, or became, so; (Msb;) [or he rubbed himself over, or perfumed himself; and she did so;] with it; (S, Msb, K;) namely, with خَلُوق. (S, Msb.) 8 إِخْتَلَقَ see 1, latter half, in two places.12 اخلولق, said of the back (مَتْن) of a horse, It was, or became, smooth; (K;) [like خَلِقَ and خَلُقَ; or very smooth; for] the verb is of a form intensive in signification. (TA. [See its part. n., مَخْلَوْلِقٌ, below.]) b2: Said of a رَسْم [i. e. a trace, or a remain or relic marking the place of a house or the like and cleaving to the ground,] It was, or became, even with the ground. (S, K.) b3: اخلولق السَّحَابُ The clouds became equable, or uniform, (JK, S, K, TA,) their sides becoming conjoined; or, as some say, they became smooth; (TA;) and, (K,) or as some say, (S, TA,) they became adapted, or disposed, to rain; (S, K, TA;) as though they were rendered smooth: or they became collected together after separation, and prepared to rain. (TA.) And اخلولقت السَّمَآءُأَنْ تَمْطُرَ The sky was near, and likely, to rain. (TA.) b4: See also 1, latter part.

خَلْقٌ inf. n. of خَلَقَ. (JK, S, Msb, K, &c.) You say رَجُلٌ تَامُّ الخَلْقِ [A man complete, or perfect, in respect of make, or proportion, &c.]. (S, K. * [See also خِلْقَةٌ.]) [In this and similar instances,] الخَلْق signifies The fashion of the outer man, and its [peculiar] qualities and attributes; like as الخُلُقُ signifies “ the fashion of the inner man,” &c. (TA.) b2: الخَلْقُ is also used in the sense of ↓ المَخْلُوقُ [meaning What is created; the creature]: (TA, and Bd in xxiii. 17, &c.:) [and, collectively, the creation; as meaning the beings, or things, that are created;] all created things: (Bd ubi suprà, &c.:) and [particularly] mankind; as also ↓ الخلِيقَةُ: (S, * K:) and mankind and the jinn, or genii, and others: (Jel in lv. 9, &c.:) and ↓ الخلِيقَةُ and [its pl.] خَلَائِقُ signify the same: you say, هُمْ خَلِيقَةُ اللّٰهِ and also هُمْ خَلقُ اللّٰهِ [They are the creatures of God]: الخَلْقُ being originally an inf. n.: (S, TA:) and Lh mentions [an instance of its having a pl., in] the saying, لَا وَالَّذِى خَلَقَ الخُلُوقَ مَا فَعَلْتُ كَذَا, meaning [No, by Him who created] all creatures, [I did not such a thing.] (TA.) In the saying, فَلَيُغَيِّرُنَّ خَلْقَ اللّٰهِ, in the Kur [iv. 118, lit. and they shall alter the creature of God], some say that castration is meant: (TA: [and Bd includes, with this, other unnatural actions:]) or the meaning is, the religion of God; (Bd, Jel, TA;) accord. to El-Hasan and Mujáhid. (TA.) and لَا تَبْدِيلَ لِخَلْقِ اللّٰهِ, in the Kur [xxx. 29], means, accord. to Katádeh, [There shall be no changing, or altering,] of the religion of God. (TA.) b3: خَلْقٌ also signifies Anything made smooth. (TA.) [See also مُخَلَّقٌ.]

خَلَقُ inf. n. of خَلِقَ: as such, signifying The being smooth [&c.]. (JK, S. *) [As such also,] in a rock, Freedom from crack or fracture. (S, K.) b2: [And, as such,] The being old, and worn out. (K.) b3: [Hence, used as an epithet,] Old, and worn out: (S, Msb, K:) [and as an epithet in which the quality of a subst. is predominant; meaning an old and worn-out garment or piece of cloth:] pl. خُلْقَانٌ (S, K) and أَخْلَاقٌ. (S, * K, * TA.) And [as an epithet] it is masc. and fem.; (S, K;) because it is originally an inf. n., the inf. n. of أَخْلَقُ meaning “ smooth,” (S,) [or rather of خَلِقَ meaning “ it was, or became, old, and worn out; ” although it has pls.; and] IB mentions an instance of its dual, خَلَقَانِ: (TA:) Ks says, We have not heard them say, خَلَقَةٌ in any instance: (Lh, TA:) Fr says that it is without ة [as a fem. epithet] because it was originally used as a prefixed noun; for one said, أَعْطِنِى

خَلَقَ جُبَّتِكَ and خَلَقَ عِمَامَتِكَ [lit. meaning Give thou to me what is old, and worn out, of thy جبّة and of thy turban]; but Ez-Zejjájee says that this is nought. (TA.) You say ثَوْبٌ خَلَقٌ [An old and worn-out garment or piece of cloth], and مِلْحَفَةٌ خَلَقٌ [an old and worn-out outer wrapping garment]: (S:) also رُمَّةٌ خَلَقٌ [an old and worn-out piece of rope]: and دَارٌ خَلَقٌ [an old and decayed house]: and جِسْمٌ خَلَقٌ [an old and wasted body]. (TA.) One says also ثَوْبٌ

أَخْلَاقٌ, meaning A garment, or piece of cloth, altogether, or wholly, old and worn out; (Fr, S, K;) every portion of it being خَلَق; (Fr;) like as they said بُرْمَةٌ أَعْشَارٌ &c.: (S:) and in like manner, مُلَآءَةٌ أَخْلَاقٌ. (IAar.) And Ks mentions the saying, أَصْبَحَتْ ثِيَابُهُمْ خُلْقَانًا وَ خَلَقُهُمْ جُدُدًا [Their garments became old, and worn out; and their old and worn-out garments became replaced by new]; with the sing. [in the latter clause] in the place of the pl. خُلْقَان: (TA:) or جُدُدًا may be here put for جَدِيدًا. (L in art. جد.) In the phrase ↓ مِلْحَفَةٌ خُلَيْقٌ [An outer wrapping garment that is a little, or somewhat, old, and worn out], the dim. is without ة because it is [the dim. of] an epithet [applied without ة to a fem. n.], and ة is not affixed to the dims. of epithets [of this kind]: it is like نُصَيُفٌ dim. of نَصَفٌ an epithet applied to a woman. (S, K. * [See Lumsden's Arab. Gram. p. 623: but some of the grammarians consider these instances as anomalous.]) b4: بَاعَهُ بِيعَةَ الخَلَقِ, and بَيْعَ ذِى الخَلَقِ, the latter as used by a poet, [lit. He bought it, or sold it, (app. the former,) as one buys, or sells, the old and worn-out garment, like as we say “ dogcheap,” and “ cheap as dirt ”], are phrases mentioned, but not explained, by IAar, who cites the following saying: أَبْلِغْ فَزَارَةَ أَنِّى قَدْ شَرَيْتُ لَهَا مَجْدَ الحَيَاةِ بِسَيْفِى بَيْعَ ذِى الخَلَقِ [app. meaning Tell thou Fezárah that I have purchased for them life-long glory (lit. the glory of life), with my sword, as cheaply, i. e as easily, as one purchases the old and worn-out garment]. (TA.) b5: سَحَابَةٌ خَلَقَةٌ: see the next paragraph.

خَلِقٌ [part. n. of خَلِقَ]. b2: [Hence,] سحَابَةٌ خَلِقَةٌ A cloud in which is a sign, or trace, of rain; as also ↓ خَلِيقَةٌ: (S, K:) or a cloud giving hope of rain; as also ↓ خَلْقَآءُ; (JK;) both are said by IAar to signify the same: (TA:) and ↓ خَلَقَةٌ [alone, as a subst., or probably سَحَابَةٌ خَلَقَةٌ,] a cloud that is equable, or uniform, giving hope of rain. (Aboo-Sa'eed, K.) خُلُقٌ (S, Msb, K) and ↓ خُلْقٌ (S, K) A nature; or a natural, a native, or an innate, disposition or temper or the like; syn. سَجِيَّةٌ, (S, Msb, K, TA,) and طَبْعٌ; (K, TA;) of which one is created: (TA:) and ↓ خِلْقَةٌ signifies [the same; i. e.] the فِطْرَةٌ [or nature, &c.,] (S, Msb, K, TA) of which a man is created; (TA;) like [خُلُقٌ and] ↓ خُلْقٌ: (K, TA: [in the CK, erroneously, خَلْق:]) and ↓ خَلِيقَةٌ [also] signifies [the same; i. e.] the طَبِيعَة [or nature, &c.,] (S, K, TA) with which a man is created: (TA:) the proper signification of خُلُقٌ is [the moral character; or] the fashion of the inner man; i. e. his mind, or soul, and its peculiar qualities and attributes; like as خَلْقٌ signifies the “ fashion of the outer man, and its [peculiar] qualities and attributes: ”

it signifies also custom or habit [as being a second nature]: (TA:) and, as also ↓ خُلْقٌ, [which is merely a contraction thereof, and therefore identical with it in all its senses,] manliness; syn. مُرُوْءَةٌ: and religion: (IAar, K:) the pl. is أَخْلَاقٌ only: (TA:) [this is often used as signifying morals: and ethics:] and the pl. of ↓ خَلِيقَةٌ in the sense explained above [said in Har p. 193 to be that of خُلُقٌ] is خَلَائِقٌ. (S.) It is said in a trad., لَيْسَ شَىْءٌ فِى المِيزَانِ أَثْقَلَ مِنْ حُسْنِ الخُلُقِ [Nothing is heavier in the balance in which good and evil will be weighed than goodness of the moral character, &c.] (TA.) And one says, عَلَيْهَا ↓ الَّتِى خُلِقَ ↓ هٰذِهِ خَلِيقَتُهُ and ↓ خُلِقَهَا and ↓ الَّتِى خُلِقَ This is his nature, &c., of which he was created. (Lh.) And ↓ إِنَّهُ لَكَرِيمُ الخَلِيقَةِ Verily he is generous in respect of nature, &c. (Az.) And صَارَ ذٰلِكَ لَهُ خُلُقًا That became to him [a second nature, a habit, or] a thing to which he was habituated. (TA.) It is said in the Kur [xxvi. 137], إِنْ هٰذَا إِلَّا خُلُقُ الأَوَّلِينَ This is nought but a custom of the ancients. (TA.) And in the same [lxviii. 4], وَ إِنَّكَ لَعَلَى خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ and verily thou art of a great religion. (Jel, TA.) And in a trad. of 'Áïsheh, كَانَ خُلُقُهُ القَرْآنَ, meaning That whereto he clung was the Kur-án, with its rules of discipline and its command and its prohibitions, and the excellences and beauties and gracious things comprised in it. (TA.) b2: نَوْمَةُ الخُلقِ [i. e. الخُلُقِ or ↓ الخُلْقِ] The sleep of midday, which was prescribed by the Prophet. (Har p. 223. [See also حُمْقٌ and خُرْقٌ.]) خُلْقَةٌ Smoothness; (K, TA;) as also ↓ خُلُوقَةٌ and ↓ خَلَاقَةٌ: (K:) but the second of these three, correctly speaking, [as also the third, accord. to analogy, and perhaps the first also,] is an inf. n. of خَلُقَ. (TA.) خِلْقَةٌ [primarily signifies A mode, or manner, of خَلْق, generally as meaning creation; a particular make: and hence,] constitution; syn. تَرْكِيبٌ: (Mgh:) [and particularly the natural constitution of an animated being, as created in the womb of the mother; also termed فِطْرَةٌ:] see also خُلُقٌ. You say رَجُلٌ حَسَنُ الخِلْقَةِ [A man goodly, or beautiful, in respect of make]. (A, TA.) فِى مَسْلَكٍ هُوَ خِلْقَةٌ means فِى طَرِيقٍ

أَصْلِىٍّ ↓ خِلْقِىٍّ [In a way, or road, that is natural, and original]. (Mgh.) خَلَقَةٌ: see خَلِقٌ.

خِلْقِىٌّ Natural; not accidental: [constitutional: of, or relating to, or belonging to, the natural constitution of an animated being, as created in the womb of the mother:] rel. n. of خِلْقَةٌ. (Msb.) You say عَيْبٌ خِلْقِىٌّ A natural fault or imperfection &c. (Msb.) And صِفَةٌ خِلْقِيَّةٌ [A natural quality]; opposed to اخْتِيَارِيَّةٌ. (Msb in art. مدح.) See also خِلْقَةٌ.

خَلَقِىٌّ One who wears old and worn-out clothes. (TA.) خُلْقَانِىٌّ A seller of old and worn-out clothes. (TA.) خَلَاقٌ A share, or portion: (JK, S, Msb:) and a good, just, or righteous, share or portion: (JK:) or a full, a complete, or an abundant, share or portion of good, (K, TA,) and of goodness, or righteousness: (TA:) and religion: or a share, or portion, thereof. (TA.) One says, لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِى الآخِرَةِ There is no share, or portion, [of good] for him in the final state of existence. (S. [See the Kur iii. 71, &c.]) and لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ He has no desire for good, nor righteousness in religion. (TA.) خِلَاقٌ: see the next paragraph.

خَلُوقٌ A certain species of perfume; (JK, S, Mgh, Msb, K;) also termed ↓ خِلَاقٌ; (Lh, Msb, K;) accord. to some of the lawyers, (Msb,) fluid, (Mgh, Msb,) but of thick consistence; (L, voce نَضْخٌ;) and in which is a yellowness: (Mgh, Msb:) it is composed of saffron and other things; and redness and yellowness are predominant in it: it is forbidden [to men], because it is of the perfumes of women, who use it more than do men. (TA.) خَلِيقٌ, applied to a man, (S, TA,) Perfect, or complete, in make; (TA;) as also ↓ مُخْتَلَقٌ: (Ham p. 561:) or perfect, or complete, in make, and just in proportion; (S, TA;) and so ↓ the latter; (S, K, TA; [in the CK, erroneously, مُخْتَلِق; in the TA expressly said to be of the pass. form;]) fem. of the former with ة: (TA:) or ↓ both signify goodly, or beautiful, in make: or the former is not applied to a man; but ↓ each, with ة, signifies a woman having [a goodly] body and make: (TA, in which this signification is said to be tropical:) and خَلِيقٌ and خَلِيقَةٌ are alike, (JK, TA,) accord. to Lh, (TA,) in this last sense: (JK:) or the former of these two may be pl. [or coll. gen. n.] of the latter, like as شَعِيرٌ is of شَعِيرَةٌ: (TA:) and ↓ مُخْتَلَقٌ signifies anything just in proportion: (IF, TA:) ↓ مُخَلَّقٌ, also, signifies perfect, or complete, in make; applied to a camel (جمل): (TA:) [or جمل, here may be a mistranscription for حَمْل; for] ↓ مُضْغَةٌ مُخَلَّقَةٌ signifies [a fœtus when it has become like a lump of flesh] perfect, or complete, in make; (Fr, S, K;) so in the Kur xxii. 5; (Fr, TA;) or of which the make has become apparent. (IAar, TA.) b2: Also Adapted or disposed [by nature], apt, meet, suited, suitable, fitted, fit, proper, competent, or worthy; (KL, PS;) syn. جَدِيرٌ (S, K) and حَرِىٌّ (TA) [and حَقِيقٌ &c.: pl. خُلَقَآءُ, and Freytag adds خُلُقٌ]. You say, فُلَانٌ خَلِيقٌ لِكَذَا, i. e. جَدِيرٌ بِهِ [Such a one is adapted or disposed by nature, &c., for such a thing]; as though he were one of those in whom that was reckoned to be, and in whom the symptoms, signs, or tokens, thereof were seen. (S.) [And هُوَ خَلِيقٌ لِلْخَيْرِ He is adapted or disposed by nature to good; i. e., to be, or to do, or to effect, or to produce, what is good.] and إِنَّهُ لَخَلِيقٌ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ ذٰلِكَ and بِأَنْ يفعل ذلك and لِأَنْ يفعل ذلك and منْ أَنْ يفعل ذلك [Verily he is adapted or disposed &c. for doing that; or worthy to do it]: so says Lh: and he adds that the Arabs say, يَا خَلِيقُ بِذٰلِكَ, using the nom. case; and يَا خَلِيقًا بِذٰلِكَ, using the accus. case; [the latter being the usual form; both meaning O thou who art adapted or disposed &c. for that;] but ISd says, I know not the reason of this. (TA.) And لِذَاكَ ↓ هٰذَا مَخْلَقَةٌ, i. e. مَجْدَرَةٌ لَهُ [This is one that is adapted or disposed &c. for that]: (S, K: *) and لَكَ ↓ هٰذَا الأَمْرُ مَخْلَقَةٌ [This affair, or thing, is one that is adapted &c. for thee]: and مِنْ ذٰلِكَ ↓ إِنَّهُ مَخْلَقَةٌ [Verily it is adapted &c. for that]: like مَجْدَرَةٌ and مَحْرَاةٌ and مَقْمَنَةٌ: and in like manner one says of two, and of more than two, and of a feminine: so says Lh. (TA.) [↓ مَخْلَقَةٌ properly signifies A place, and hence a thing, an affair, and a person, adapted or disposed &c.: it is of the same class as مَعْسَاةٌ and مَظِنَّةٌ and مَئِنَّةٌ.] خَلِيقٌ also signifies Habituated, or accustomed. (PS, TA. *) And one says, إِنَّهُ لَخَلِيقٌ, i. e. لَحَرِىٌّ, meaning Verily it is probable; or likely to happen or be, or to have happened or been. (TA.) And هُوَ خَلِيقٌ لَهُ He, or it, is like to him, or it. (JK, TA.) b3: سَحَابَةٌ خَلِيقَةٌ: see خَلِقٌ. b4: [See also خَلِيقَةٌ, which, in several senses, is a fem. epithet used as a subst.]

خَلِيقَةٌ: see خَلْقٌ, in two places. b2: Also The beasts, or brutes. (En-Nadr, K.) The saying, respecting the خَوَارِج [a sect of heretics, or schismatics], هُمْ شَرُّ الخَلْقِ وَ الخَلِيقَةٌ is explained by En-Nadr as meaning [They are the worst of mankind and] of the beasts, or brutes. (TA.) b3: And A well (بِئْرٌ) just dug: (AA, K:) or a well in which is no water: or a hollow, cavity, pit, or hole, formed by nature in the ground: or a small hollow or cavity, in a mountain, in which water remains and stagnates: accord. to IAar, خلق [app. خُلُقٌ, pl. of خَلِيقَةٌ, like as مُدُنٌ and صُحُفٌ are pls. of مَدِينَةٌ and صَحِيفَةٌ,] signifies wells recently dug. (TA.) b4: And Land (أَرْضٌ) that is dug. (TA.) b5: See also خُلُقٌ, in four places.

خُلَيْقَآءُ [dim. of خَلْقَآءُ fem. of أَخْلَقُ]: see أَخْلَقُ, in three places.

خَلَائِقُ [pl. of خَلِيقَةٌ].

A2: الخَلَائِقُ i. q. حَمَائِرُ المَآءِ, i. e. Four large and smooth masses of stone at the head of the well, upon which the drawer of the water stands. (TA.) Accord. to Ibn-'Abbád, حَوْضٌ بَادِى الخَلَائِقِ means [A watering-trough of which] the [stones termed] نَصَائِب [appear]. (JK, TA. [See نَصِيبَةٌ.]) خُلَّقٌ: see أَخْلَقُ.

خَالِقٌ [act. part. n. of خَلَقَ:] A worker in leather and the like; (K, TA;) because he measures first, and then cuts. (TA.) To خَالِقَات, meaning Women working in leather, as engaged in dividing a hide (أَدِيم), El-Kumeyt likens genealogists. (TA.) b2: الخَالِقُ, as an epithet applied to God, (K, Msb, TA,) properly, He who brings into existence according to the proper measure, or proportion, or adaptation; (TA;) [and hence, the Creator; or] the Originator, not after the similitude of anything pre-existing: (K:) or He who hath brought into existence all things after they had not been in existence: (Az, TA:) and ↓ الخَلَّاقُ signifies the same; (Msb, * TA;) [i. e. the Creator of all things; or, as an intensive epithet, the Great Creator;] or the Creator of many creatures: (Ksh and Bd and Jel, in xxxvi. 81:) Az says that this epithet, with the article ال, may not be applied to any but God. (Msb.) Accord. to IAmb, تَبَارَكَ اللّٰهُ

أَحْسَنُ الخَالِقِينَ means احسن المُقَدَّرِينَ [i. e. Blessed be God, the Best of those who make things according to their proper measures, or proportions, or adaptations]. (TA.) خَوَالِقُ [a pl. of which the sing. is not mentioned] Smooth mountains: so in the saying of Lebeed, وَ الأَرْضُ تَحْتَهُمْ مِهَادًا رَاسِيًا ثَبَتَتْ خَوَالِقُهَا بِصُمِّ الجَنْدَلَ

[And the earth beneath them a firm expanse; its smooth mountains being rendered fast by hard and solid stones]. (K, TA. [In the CK, بضَمِّ is erroneously put for بِصُمِّ.]) أَخْلَقُ Smooth: (JK, K:) smooth and solid; (S, K, TA;) applied in this sense to anything: (TA:) smooth and firm: (JK:) fem. خَلْقَآءُ. (JK, S, K.) You say حَجَرٌ أَخْلَقُ Stone that is smooth (K, TA) and solid, upon which nothing makes an impression. (TA.) And صَخْرَةٌ خَلْقَآءُ A rock, or great mass of stone, smooth (K, TA) and solid: (TA:) or free from crack and fracture. (S, K, TA.) And فِرْسِنٌ خَلْقَآءُ A camel's foot in which is no crack. (Ibn-'Abbád, K.) And هَضْبَةٌ خَلْقَآءُ [A hill, or the like,] destitute of herbage or vegetation. (TA.) b2: [Hence,] (assumed tropical:) Poor; syn. فَقِيرٌ. (K.) You say رَجُلٌ أَخْلَقُ مِنَ المَالِ (assumed tropical:) A man destitute of property. (TA.) And it is said in a trad., لَيْسَ الفَقِيرَ فَقِيرُ المَالِ إِنَّمَا الفَقِيرُ الأَخْلَقُ الكَسْبِ, i. e. (assumed tropical:) [The poor in respect of property is not the poor the poor is only] he who has no good deeds for which he will be rewarded in the world to come. (TA, in two places.) b3: الأَخْلَقُ also signifies The exterior of a horse's hoof. (JK.) b4: And خَلْقَآءُ, (JK, S, K,) applied to a woman, (JK, S,) Impervia coëunti; (S, K, TA;) as also ↓ خُلَّقٌ. (Ibn-'Abbád, K.) b5: See also خَلِقٌ. b6: And الخَلْقَآءُ [used as a subst.] The sky; because of its smoothness and evenness. (TA.) b7: And The side of a camel &c. (K.) One says also, ضَرَبْتُ خَلْقَآءَ جَنْبِهِ (K, TA [in the CK على خَلْقَاءَ جَنْبِهِ]) I struck the outer part of his side. (TA.) b8: And The interior (Lth, K, TA) and smooth part (Lth, TA,) of the غَار, (K,) i. e., of [the upper part of the interior of the mouth, or] what is termed الغَارُ الأَعْلَى; (Lth, TA;) as also ↓ الخُلَيْقَآءُ [the dim. of الخَلْقَآءُ]: (Lth, K, TA:) or both signify what appears of the غار: and the dim. form is that which is predominant in this case. (TA.) b9: And The part of the forehead that is even (JK, K, TA) and smooth; (TA;) as also ↓ الخُلَيْقَآءُ. (JK, K, TA.) One says, سُحِبُوا عَلَى خَلْقَاوَاتِ جِبَاهِهِمْ [They were dragged along upon the even and smooth parts of their foreheads]. (TA [in which this is said to be tropical]) b10: الفَرَسِ ↓ خُلَيْقَآءُ That [part] of the horse which is like the عِرْنِين [or upper part of the nose] of man; (S, K;) the part where the forehead of the horse meets the narrow portion of the bone of the nose: AO says that the خُلَيْقَاوَانِ in the face of the horse are [the two parts] where his forehead meets the bone of his nose, on the right and left of the خُلَيْقَآء, sloping towards the eye; and the خُلَيْقَآء is [the part] between the eyes; and some call it the خَلْقَآء. (TA.) A2: إِنَّ أَخْلَقَ بِكَ أَنْ تَفْعَلَ كَذَا is a phrase mentioned by Ks, as meaning Verily the most apt, meet, suitable, fit, or proper, thing for thee to do is such a thing. (TA.) مَخْلَقَةٌ: see خَلِيقٌ, in four places, in the latter half of the paragraph.

مُخَلَّقٌ: see خَلِيقٌ, in two places, in the former half of the paragraph. b2: Also, applied to an arrow, Made smooth (S, K, TA) and even. (TA.) [See also خَلْقٌ, last signification; and مُخْتَلَقٌ.]

مَخْلُوقٌ [pass. part. n. of خَلَقَ. When used as a subst., signifying A creature, or created thing, its pl. is مَخْلُوقَاتٌ]. See خَلْقٌ. b2: قَصِيدَةٌ مَخْلُوقَةٌ (tropical:) [An ode that is forged; or] ascribed to a person not its author. (S, K, * TA.) مُخْتَلَقٌ: see خَلِيقٌ, first sentence, in five places. b2: Also Made smooth. (TA.) [See also مُخَلَّقٌ.] b3: And Generous in [nature, or] natural dispositions. (Ham p. 561.) b4: مُخْتَلَقٌ لِلْمُلْكِ, in a verse of Dhu-r-Rummeh, means Created of a nature fitting for dominion: (S, TA:) and so لِلْأَصْحَابِ [for companions]; as in a verse of Ibn-Ahmar. (TA.) مُخْلَوْلِقٌ Very smooth; its measure being one of those that denote intensiveness. (Ham p. 358.)
