The Arabic Lexicon is based on the vision and work of one man (Ikram Hawramani), without support from any source. In 2015, during some Arabic linguistic work, I was frustrated by the lack of online Arabic dictionaries that matched my desired standards of comprehensiveness, relevance of search results, and general usability, so I decided to make my own.
While having advanced knowledge of Quranic Arabic, I do not have advanced training in Arabic linguistics. My work on this site involves doing the jobs of what is normally left to different individuals; software engineering (the greatest effort has been on the search engine, making it one of the most advanced Arabic text search engines I know of, and made much better in the upcoming remake of The Arabic Lexicon), Linux system administration, Arabic digital humanities work (text analysis and processing, sometimes involving inventing new algorithms like progressive mapping to properly process certain dictionaries), and linguistic reviews of the contents of the dictionaries for accuracy.
On the server administration side, I do not use “canned” solutions, but manage the server on the root level, and have built a custom setup that allows processing 3 million requests per day at very good speeds; this involves multiple layers of anti-abuse defenses, a 3-web server software pipeline using 3 layered caching mechanisms (just one of them involves 6 million database rows).
Suffering from 3 chronic and often disabling health conditions, I have been unable to build what might be called a real career; my work involves going from one thing to another and trying to make use of my abilities to make useful things, while also trying to make a living with occasional part-time work.
