3 لَاغَاهُ He jested, or joked, with him; inf. n. مُلَاغَاةٌ. (A, TA.) You say, لَاغَاهُ فِى البَيْعِ. (A, TA, art. كيس.) لَغْوٌ, applied to speech, &c., Nought; of no account; (M, K;) unprofitable. (M.) b2: اليَمِينُ اللَّغْوُ: see KT, voce يَمِينٌ.

1 سَجَا, (S, Msb, K, &c.,) aor. ـْ (S, Msb,) inf. n. سُجُوٌّ (S, K, TA) and سَجْوٌ, (TA,) said of the night, (Fr, IAar, Msb, TA,) &c., (TA,) It was, or became, silent, quiet, or still: (Fr, IAar, S, K, TA:) and dark: (Fr, TA:) or its darkness became extended: (IAar, TA:) or it covered, or concealed, by its darkness. (Msb, TA.) وَ اللَّيْلِ

إِذَا سَجَا, in the Kur [xciii. 2], means And the night when it becomes still, silent, or quiet: (IAar, Zj, S, Jel:) or when it covers with its darkness: (Jel:) or when its people become silent: or when its darkness becomes still: from سَجَا البَحْرُ, inf. n. سُجُوٌّ, The sea became calm. (Bd.) And one says, سَجَتِ الرِّيحُ The wind became still. (TA.) b2: سَجَتِ النَّاقَةُ The she-camel prolonged her حَنِين [or cry of yearning towards her young one]. (K.) b3: See also 2.2 سجّى He covered anything; as also ↓ اسجى, and ↓ سَجَا. (IAar, TA.) You say, سجّى المَيِّتَ, (S, Mgh, Msb,) inf. n. تَسْجَيةٌ, (S, Mgh, K,) He covered the dead person (Mgh, Msb, K) with a garment, or piece of cloth, (Mgh, Msb,) and the like. (Msb.) 3 ساجاهُ, (K,) inf. n. مُسَاجَاةٌ, (TA,) He touched it. (K.) One says, أَتَانَا بِطَعَامٍ فَمَا سَاجَيْنَاهُ i. e. [He brought us food, and] we did not touch it. (Az, TA.) b2: And i. q. عَالَجَهُ [meaning He worked, or laboured, upon it, or at it; &c.]. (K.) One says, هَلْ تُسَاجِى ضَيْعَةً i. e. تُعَالِجُهَا [meaning Dost thou work, or labour, upon a landed estate? or, probably, dost thou cultivate a landed estate by the work, or labour, of others?]. سَجِيَّةٌ A nature; or a natural, a native, or an innate, disposition or temper or the like; syn. خُلُقٌ, and طَبِيعَةٌ, (S,) or غَرِيزَةٌ: (Msb:) or a faculty, or quality, firmly rooted in the mind, not easy of removal: (MF:) pl. سَجَايَا. (Msb.) نَاقَةٌ سَجْوَآءُ A she-camel still, or quiet, when being milked. (M, K.) b2: And A she-camel whose fur is unruffled: and شَاةٌ سَجْوَآءُ a sheep whose wool is unruffled. (TA.) b3: And رِيحٌ سَجْوَآءُ A gentle wind. (TA.) b4: And اِمْرَأَةٌ سَجْوَآءُ الطَّرْفِ i. e. ↓ سَاجِيَتُهُ, (K,) meaning A woman languid, or languishing, in the eye. (TA.) سَاجٍ Still, silent, or quiet: thus applied to the sea [as meaning calm, or unruffled]. (S, K.) And لَيْلَةٌ سَاجِيَةٌ A calm night, in which the wind is still, and such as is not dark: (T, TA:) or a night in which the cold has become allayed, and in which the wind and the clouds have become still, and which is not dark. (M, TA.) and طَرْفٌ سَاجٍ A still, or motionless, eye: (S, K:) [or] عَيْنٌ سَاجِيَةٌ, accord. to IAar, means an eye that has a languid, or languishing, look; which is an accessory to beauty in women. ى1 قَوِىَ and ↓ تَقَوَّى (S, K) and ↓ اِقْتَوَى (K) He became strong: (S, K:) vigorous, robust, or sturdy; like اِشْتَدَّ, or the last signifies he became excellent in strength. (TA.) b2: قَوِىَ عَلَيْهِ He had strength, or power, sufficient for it; or he had strength, or power, to endure it; he prevailed against it; namely, travel, adversity, &c. And He or it, prevailed over him, or it. b3: See 4. b4: قَوِىَ is [said to be] originally قَوِوَ, because it is from القُوَّةُ: (I'Ak, p. 368:) but Lth holds قُوَّةٌ to be [anomalous,] originally قُويَةٌ. (TA.) I prefer the former opinion, and think it should be mentioned in art. قو, or I would rather head this art. قو or قوى, like غو or غوى. ISd holds قُوَّةٌ to be from قوو, like ثُوَّةٌ, q. v. from ثوو.2 قَوَّاهُ : see شَدَّهُ. b2: قَوَّانِى عَلَيْهِ: see 2 in art. طوق.3 قَاوَاهُ He vied with him, strove to surpass him, or contended with him for superiority, (S, K,) in strength: (TA:) i. q. شَادَّهُ. (A, L in art. شد.) 4 أَقْوَتِ الدَّارُ The house became empty, vacant, or unoccupied; (S, Mgh, Msb, K;) as also ↓ قَوِيَت. (S, K.) 5 تَقَوَّى He strengthened himself; made himself, or constrained himself to be, strong; affected, or endeavoured to acquire, strength. See 1. b2: تَقَوَّى مِنَ الشَّىْءِ بِقَوْمِهِ: see تَمَنَّعَ.8 إِقْتَوَىَ see 1.

فُوَّةٌ Strength, power, potency, might, or force; contr. of ضَعْفٌ; (S, K;) in body, and in intellect: (TA:) vigour, robustness, or sturdiness; like شِدَّة. b2: قُوَّةٌ A strand; i. e., a single twist of a rope; a yarn; a distinct, and separately twisted, portion, of two or more which, being twisted together, compose the whole, of a rope, and of a string, or thread. See also ثِنْىٌ. b3: A faculty. Ex. السَّمْعُ قُوَّةٌ فِى الاُذُنِ بِهَا تُدْرِكُ الأَصْوَاتَ [السمع is a faculty in the ear by which it perceives sounds]. (TA in art. سمع.) b4: بِالقُوَّةِ Potentially, or virtually; as opposed to بِالفِعْلِ, i. e. actually. b5: قُوَّةُ لَفْظٍ: see لَيْتَ.

1 صَالَ, aor. ـِ i. q. صال having for its aor. ـُ (Ibn-'Abbád, O, K,) i. e. He (a man) leaped or sprang [&c.]. (Ibn-'Abbád, O.) A2: صِيلَ لَهُمْ كَذَا, (S and K in art. صول,) or لَهُ, (Ibn-'Abbád and O and K in the present art.,) Such a thing was appointed, or ordained, or prepared, for them, or for him. (Ibn-'Abbád, S, O, K.) This is its proper place. (TA.) صِيلَةٌ The knot of the عَذَبَة [i. e. of the end, or of the suspensory thong, of a whip]. (S and K in art. صول, and O in the present art.) صِيَالٌ and صِيَالَةٌ: see art. صول. Quasi صيم صُيَّمٌ and صِيَّمٌ and صُيَّامٌ and صَيَامَى pls. of صَائِمٌ, expl. in art. صوم.

1 ضَنَتِ المَرْأَةُ, inf. n. ضَنَآءٌ (S, M, K) and ضَنًا, (M, K,) The woman had many children; (S, M, K;) as also ضَنِيَت: (K:) and so with ء. (S.) b2: And ضَنَا نَصِيبُهُ His share, or portion, became redundant; it increased, or augmented. بُرْغُوثٌ, (S, K,) also, accord. to Es-Suyootee, with fet-h and with kesr to the first letter, and Dmr says the like; [so that it is app. written also بَرْغُوثٌ, as it is commonly pronounced by the vulgar, though it is generally said that there is no word of this measure except صَعْفُوق; and بِرْغَوْثٌ, like بِرْذَوْنٌ, for there is no word of the measure فِعْلُولٌ;] but each of these two forms requires proof; (MF;) [like the Hebr. 165, which, accord. to Gesenius, is undoubtedly from an Æthiopic root signifying “to spring,” “to dance;” The flea;] a certain insect (دُوَيْبَّة), resembling the حُرْقُوص; (TA;) well known: (K:) [a coll. gen. n.: n. un. with ة:] pl. بَرَاغِيثُ. 1 فَزَّ, (A, O, K,) aor. ـِ inf. n. فَزٌّ, (TA,) He (a gazelle) was, or became, frightened, or afraid. (A, O, K.) b2: فَزَّ قَلْبُهُ His heart heaved by reason of fear. (O.) b3: فَزَّ عَنْهُ He (a man, O) turned away from him. (A, O, K.) And He separated himself from him, and became alone. (A, O, K.) A2: فَزَّ, aor. ـِ inf. n. فَزَازَةٌ and فُزُوزَةٌ, He (a man, O) became excited with ardour, or eagerness. (O, K.) A4: فَزَّ, aor. ـِ inf. n. فَزِيزٌ (S, O, K, TA) and فَزٌّ, (TA,) said of a wound, It became moist, and flowed, (S, O, K, TA,) discharging its contents; and so فَصَّ: and in like manner it is said of water [app. as meaning it oozed forth]: (TA:) and of sweat, meaning It exuded; and so فَصَّ. (TA in art. فص.) 2 فزّزهُ He (a man) rendered him powerful, or strong, and made him to overcome. (Ibn-'Abbád, O.) 4 أَفْزَ3َ see 1, latter half.8 افتزّ He (a man, O) overcame; (K;) or was, or became, powerful, or strong, and overcame: (O:) and ابتزّ and ابتذّ signify the same: so in the Nawádir. (O, TA.) 10 استفزّهُ It (fear, S, A, O) excited him to lightness and unsteadiness; unsettled him. (S, A, O, K.) وَاسْتَفْزِزْ مَنِ اسْتَطَعتَ مِنْهُمْ بِصَوْتِكَ, in the Kur [xvii. 66], is expl. by Fr as meaning and excite thou to lightness and unsteadiness, or unsettle thou, when thou canst, with thy voice. (O, TA.) And in like manner, وَإِنْ كَادُوا لَيَسْتَفِزُّونَكَ مِنَ الأَرْضِ, in the same [xvii. 78], is expl. by him (O, TA) as meaning, And verily they were near to unsettling thee from the land: (TA:) but some say the meaning is, they were near to frightening thee so as to excite thee to promptness of flight from the land. (O, TA.) And استفزّهُ عَنْ رَأْيِهِ He incited him, or excited him, to ignorance, foolishness, or wrong conduct, and levity, or unsteadiness, so as to make him swerve from his right sentiment, opinion, or judgment; like اِسْتَخَفَّهُ عن رأيه. (Az and TA in art. خف.) b2: He incited him, or excited him, to be promptly obedient and submissive to him and to that which he desired of him; like استخفّهُ. (Ksh in xliii. 54.) b3: He expelled him (Jel in xvii. 105, and K) from the land, (Jel,) or from his abode, and disturbed, or disquieted, or unsettled, him, (K,) so as to excite him to lightness and unsteadiness. (TA.) قَعَدَ مُسْتَفَزًّا [so in a copy of the S, but without the vowel-signs: in two other copies of the same, مُسْتَوْفِزًا, which belongs to art. وفز:] He sat in an uneasy posture. (S.) b2: فَرَسٌ مُسْتَفِزٌّ لِلْــوَثْبِ وَالعَدْوِ [so in two copies of the S, in art. طمر; in the O, in that art., مُسْتَفِزُّ الــوَثْبِ وَالعَدْوِ; probably a mistake for مُسْتَفَزّ; app. meaning, A horse in a state of excitement to leap and run.]

Q. 1 فَرْشَحَ, inf. n. فَرْشَحَةٌ (S, K) and فَرْشَحَى, (K,) He (a man, S) parted his legs; (K:) or he parted his legs in sitting; and so فَرْشَطَ: (Lh, S:) or he spread his legs wide apart: (A 'Obeyd, TA:) and he stood with his legs wide apart in prayer; (Ks, S;) and so فرشح رِجْلَيْهِ: (S:) or he sat in a relaxed state, with his thighs cleaving to the ground; (K;) and so فَرْشَطَ: (TA:) or he leaped, or jumped; (K;) or made short leaps or jumps. (TA.) And فَرْشَحَتْ, (S, L, and so in some copies of the K,) or ↓ تَفَرْشَحَتْ, (thus in other copies of the K, and thus in the CK,) She (a camel) parted her kind legs to be milked (S, L, K) and to stale. فِرْشَاحٌ A broad, or wide, land: (K, TA:) accord. to the K, syn. with فِرْسَاحٌ; but Sh says that the latter is a mistranscription; the former being the correct word, from فَرْشَحَ فِى جِلْسَتِهِ: and Az mentions the latter as from the JM, but not found by him as on trustworthy authority. (TA in art. فرسح.) b2: And A spreading, or wide, solid hoof. (S, K.) b3: And Clouds (سَحَاب) in which is no rain. (K.) b4: And An unseemly, or ugly, and old, woman, and she-camel.
