1 خَدَرَ and خَدِرَ, as intrans. vs.: see 4, in six places: A2: and for the former, as a trans. v.: see 2, in two places.

A3: خَدِرَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. خَدَرٌ, said of a limb, (Msb, K,) and of the body, (TA,) and خَدِرَتْ, inf. n. as above, said of the leg or foot, (S, A,) and of the arm or hand, (TA,) It was, or became, benumbed, or torpid, or affected by a languidness, or laxity, (S, Msb, K,) or by a heaviness, (IAar,) and an impotence of exercising motion, (IAar, Msb,) or by a contraction of the sinews; (TA;) said of the leg or foot [&c.], it became asleep. (TA in art. بسر.) b2: Also خَدِرَ, inf. n. as above, (assumed tropical:) He became languid from drinking wine or medicine. (TA: but only the inf. n. of the v. in this sense is there mentioned.) And (assumed tropical:) He was, or became, lazy, or slothful, and languid. (K, * TA: but in this instance, also, only the inf. n. is mentioned.) (Msb.) b2: [Hence,] خَدَّرَتْ (assumed tropical:) She (a gazelle) concealed her young one in a covert of trees or the like, or in a hollow. (TA.) and ↓ اخدر (tropical:) It (a lurking-place) concealed a lion; (K, TA;) [as also ↓ خَدَرَ: (see مَخْدُورٌ:)] and (assumed tropical:) it (anything) prevented a thing from being seen. (TA.) b3: [And hence,] خدّر (assumed tropical:) It (rain) confined people in their houses or tents. (TA.) and ↓ اخدر (assumed tropical:) It (night) confined, detained, or withheld, a person. (TA.) A3: خدّر (A) and ↓ اخدر (K) also signify It made a limb, (K,) and the body, (TA,) and a leg or foot, (A,) and an arm or a hand, (TA,) to become خَدِر, i. e. benumbed, &c. (A, K, TA. [See خَدِرَ.]) You say, خَدَّرَتْهُ المَقَاعِدُ, meaning Long sitting [lit. the sitting-places] made his legs, or feet, to be in that state. (A, TA.) 3 خَادَرَنِى [He acted covertly with me]. (A, TA. [In both, يُخَادِرُنِى is coupled with يُسَاتِرُنِى.]) 4 أَخْدَرَتْ She (a girl) kept herself behind, or within, the curtain; (Es-Sarakustee, Msb;) as also ↓ تخدّرت, (A, TA,) and ↓ اختدرت, and فِى خِدْرِهَا ↓ خَدَرَتْ. (TA.) b2: [Hence,] ↓ تخدّر [in the CK ↓ خدّر (app. a mistranscription)] and ↓ اختدر (assumed tropical:) He concealed, or hid, himself; (K, TA;) as also ↓ خَدِرَ, like فَرِحَ [in measure]: (TA:) whence the saying, القَارَةُ بِالسَّرَابِ ↓ اِخْتَدَرَتِ, i. e. [The small isolated mountain, or the like,] became concealed by the mirage. (TA.) [Hence also,] اخدر (tropical:) He (a lion) kept himself in his lurking-place; (S, A, K;) as also ↓ خَدِرَ and ↓ خَدَرَ, (TA,) or خَدَرَ فِى عَرِينِهِ. (A, TA.) and (assumed tropical:) It (a bird) remained in its nest. (S.) and (assumed tropical:) He (a man) remained, stayed, or abode; (S, K;) بِمَكَانٍ in a place; as also ↓ خَدَرَ, inf. n. خَدْرٌ; (K;) and فِى أَهْلِهِ among his family. (S.) And ↓ خَدَرَ, (S,) inf. n. خَدْرٌ (K,) (assumed tropical:) He (a gazelle) remained behind the herd; not going with it: (S, K:) and he (a beast) remained behind; not overtaking, or coming up with, the others. (TA.) And اخدروا (assumed tropical:) They entered upon night [and so became concealed from view]. (TA.) And (assumed tropical:) They entered upon a day of rain, and of clouds or mist, and of wind: (K:) or rain came upon them. (S.) خِدْرٌ A curtain (S, A, Msb, K) that is extended for a girl in a part of a house, or chamber, or tent; as also ↓ أُخْدُورٌ: (K:) and hence, (M,) any chamber, or house, or tent, or the like, that conceals a person: (M, K:) or a chamber, or house, or tent, in which is a woman; not otherwise: (Msb:) pl. [of mult.] خُدُورٌ (A, Msb, K) and [of pauc.] أَخْدَارٌ, and pl. pl. [i. e. pl. of the latter of these two, or pl. of أُخْدُورٌ,] أَخَادِيرُ. (K.) b2: [And hence, A vehicle composed of] pieces of wood set up over the saddle (قَتَب) of the camel, and curtained with a piece of cloth; (K;) i. e. a هَوْدَج. خَدَرٌ: inf. n. of خَدِرَ [q. v.]. (Msb, K.) A2: Also, and ↓ خِدْرٌ, (assumed tropical:) The darkness of night: (K:) or darkness absolutely; as also ↓ خُدْرَةٌ: (TA:) or this last signifies intense darkness: (K TA:) or, accord. to some, the night consists of five divisions, سُدْفَةٌ and سُتْفَةٌ and هَجْمَةٌ and يَعْفُورٌ and خُدْرَةٌ; so that this last signifies the last [of five divisions] of the night: or, accord. to Kr, the division next before this is called هَزِيعٌ. خَدِرٌ, applied to a limb, Affected with خَدَر, or numbness, &c. (K.) b2: [Hence,] عَيْنٌ خَدِرَةٌ and ↓ خَدْرَآءُ (tropical:) An eye in a languid state: or heavy, by reason of rubbing, or from a mote in it. (TA.) And يَعْفُورٌ خَدِرٌ (tropical:) [A gazelle, or young gazelle, &c., with languid eyes,] as though drowsy, (S, A,) by reason of the motionless state of its eye, and its weakness. (A.) b3: يَوْمٌ خَدِرٌ (assumed tropical:) A day intensely hot: (Lth:) b4: and [intensely cold: (see خَدِرَ:) or] cold and damp: (TA:) or damp: (S:) or rainy, and cloudy or misty: (Az:) and لَيْلَةٌ خَدِرَةٌ (assumed tropical:) A night cold and damp: (TA:) or damp. خَدْرَةٌ (assumed tropical:) A rain. (TA.) خُدْرَةٌ [i. q. ↓ خَدَرٌ (inf. n. of خَدِرَ) as meaning Numbness, &c., or] heaviness of a leg, and inability thereof to walk. (IAar.) b2: See also خَدَرٌ.

خُدْرِىٌّ (assumed tropical:) A black ass: (K:) as though a rel. n. from خُدْرَةُ اللَّيْلِ [The darkness, or intense darkness, of night]. (TA. [See also خُدَارِىٌّ.]) خَدُورٌ: see خَادِرٌ, in two places.

خُدَارِىٌّ (tropical:) A dark night; (S, A, K;) as also ↓ أَخْدَرُ (K) and ↓ مُخْدِرٌ (A) and ↓ خَدِرٌ and ↓ خَدَرٌ and ↓ خَدُرٌ. (K.) (assumed tropical:) A black cloud. (S.) (assumed tropical:) A camel intensely black: (S, K:) fem. with ة. (S. [See also خُدْرِىٌّ.]) (tropical:) Black hair. (A.) And خُدَارِيَّةٌ الشَّعَرِ (tropical:) A black-haired girl. (A.) b2: خُدَارِيَّةٌ also signifies (assumed tropical:) An eagle; (S, K;) because of its colour; (S;) i. e. its intense blackness. (IB.) In the following verse, كَأَنَّ عُقَابًا خُدَارِيَّةً

تُنَشِّرُ فِى الجَوِّ مِنْهَا جَنَاحَا [which may be rendered, As though a black eagle spread in the sky its wing], Th says that the poet may mean, by عُقَابًا, the bird [so called], or a banner, or garments of the kind called أَبْرَاد, which they spread over them. (TA.) خَادِرٌ (S, A, K) and ↓ مُخْدِرٌ (A, TA) [originally Keeping behind, or within, the خِدْر, or curtain. b2: And hence,] (tropical:) A lion keeping, or abiding, in his lurking-place: (A, * K, * TA:) or entering into it. (S, TA.) And the former, and ↓ خَدُورٌ, (assumed tropical:) A gazelle remaining behind the herd; not going with it: and (assumed tropical:) a beast that remains behind; not overtaking, or coming up with, the others: and ↓ خَدُورٌ likewise signifies (assumed tropical:) a camel that is in the rear of the other camels; that remains behind them, and when it sees them go on, goes on with them. (TA.) A2: خَادِرٌ signifies also (assumed tropical:) Languid, and lazy, or slothful. (S.) b2: And (tropical:) A gazelle having feeble bones. (TA.) أَخْدَرُ: [fem. خَدْرَآءُ:] see خُدَارِىٌّ.

أَخْدَرِىٌّ A wild ass: (S, K:) so called from a certain stallion named الأَخْدَرُ: (TA:) some say, (TA,) this was a horse, (A, TA,) belonging to Ardasheer, that became wild: (A:) and some say that he was an ass: or so called in relation to El-'Irák, but ISd says, I know not how this is: (TA:) the pl. is أَخْدَرِيَّاتٌ; (A;) and بَنَاتُ

↓ الأَخْدَرِ is used as a pl.; (TA;) and [in like manner] بنات الأَخْدَرِىِّ means the [wild] she-asses. (TA in art. بنى.) b2: الأَخْدَرِيَّةُ A certain race of horses: so called from a stallion named أَخْدَرُ. (K.) أُخْدُورٌ: see خِدْرٌ.

A2: خَضَرَ: see 8, in two places.2 خضّرهُ, [inf. n. تَخْضِيرٌ,] He rendered it أَخْضَر [i. e. green, &c.]. (S.) b2: [Hence,] it is said in a trad., إِذَا أَرَادَ اللّٰهُ بِعَبْدٍ شَرًّا خَضَّرَ لَهُ فِى اللَّبِنِ وَالطِّينِ حَتَّى يَبْنِىَ, (TA,) i. e. (assumed tropical:) [When God desires evil to befall a man,] He makes him to have pleasure in unburnt bricks and clay, so that he may build, and thus be diverted from the things of the world to come, if his building be beyond his need, or not such a structure as a mosque or the like. (Marginal note in a copy of the “ Jámi' es-Sagheer ” of Es-Suyootee.) [Hence also,] خُضِّرَ لَهُ فِيهِ, inf. n. as above, (tropical:) He was blessed in it. (L, K.) You say, مَنْ خُضِّرَ لَهُ فِى

(assumed tropical:) Whosoever is blessed in a thing, (Mgh, L,) meaning an art or a trade or traffic, or a means of subsistence, let him keep to it. (L.) 3 خاضرهُ, (TK,) inf. n. مُخَاضَرَةٌ, (S, A, Mgh, Msb, K,) He sold to him fruits before they were in a good, or sound, state: (A:) or before their goodness, or soundness, became apparent: (S, Mgh, Msb, K, TK:) the doing of which is forbidden: (S:) accord. to some, (TA,) the prohibition includes the sale of fresh ripe dates, [app. if not fully ripe,] and herbs, or leguminous plants, and the like; and therefore some disapprove of selling a greater quantity of fresh ripe dates than is cut at once. (S, A, Msb, K.) [Hence,] اخضرّ إِزَارَى (The place of) my ازار became black: or, rather, became of a [blackish] hue inclining to green: because the hair when it first grows is of that hue. (Har p. 494.) And اخضرّ شَارِبُهُ [His mustache grew so as to appear dark]; said of a boy; a phrase similar to بَقَلَ وَجْهُهُ. (Mgh in art. بقل.) and اخضرّاللَّيْلُ (tropical:) The night became dark and black. (K, * TA.) And اخضرّت الظُّلْمَةُ (tropical:) The darkness became intensely black. (A.) b2: اخضرّ جِلْدَتُهُ [properly His skin became green from carrying the produce of his land; meaning] (tropical:) he became in a state of plenty. (TA. خَضْرٌ Trees (شَجَرٌ) that are soft, or tender, when cut; as also ↓ مَخْضُورٌ. (TA.) خُضْرٌ: see خُضَارَةٌ.

خِضْرٌ [i. q. خَضِرٌ]. You say, أَخَذَهُ خِضْرًا مِضْرًا, and مَضِرًا ↓ خَضِرًا, He took it without price: or in its fresh, or juicy, state: (K:) مضرا being an imitative sequent. (TA.) Whence the saying, مَضِرَةٌ ↓ الدُّنْيَا خَضِرَةٌ [in the S حُلْوَةٌ خَضِرَةٌ] The goods of this world are delicate, fresh, and pleasant: or pleasing. (TA.) And ↓ الغَزْوُ حُلْوٌ خَضِرٌ [Predatory warfare is sweet and] fresh [or refreshing] and loved; because of the victory and spoil attending it. (TA, from a trad. of Ibn-'Omar [which see fully quoted voce ثُمَامٌ].) b2: You say also, هُوَلَكَ خِضْرًا مِضْرًا It is thine, or for thee: may it be attended with enjoyment and a wholesome result. (K.) b3: And ذَهَبَ دَمَهُ خِضْرًا مِضْرًا, (S, K,) and مَضِرًا ↓ خَضِرًا, (K,) His blood went unrevenged, or unretaliated, or unexpiated by a mulet: (S, K:) مضرا being an imitative sequent [here as in the former instance]. Also A species of plant of the kind called جَنْبَة; (K;) which latter term is applied to herbage whereof the root is deep in the earth, like the نَصِىّ and صِلِّيَان: (TA:) [a coll. gen. n.:] n. un. with ة: (K:) it is not of the slender and succulent herbs or leguminous plants, which dry up in summer. (TA.) Hence آكِلَةُ الخَضِرِ, occurring in a trad., [properly signifying A she-camel that eats the plant above mentioned,] applied to a man who acts justly and moderately with respect to worldly enjoyments: for the خضر is not of the slender and succulent herbs, as above observed, nor of those excellent plants which the spring produces by its consecutive rains, and which therefore become goodly and soft or tender; but of those upon which beasts pasture after others have dried up, because they find no others, and which the Arabs call جَنْبَة; and the beasts do not eat much of it, nor do they find it wholesome. (TA.) خُضْرَةٌ [Greenness; a green colour; verdure;] a certain colour, (S, A, K,) well known; (K;) [and] a colour between black and white: it is in plants and in animals &c., and, accord. to IAar, in water also: (TA:) in camels, (S,) and horses, (S, K,) [and asses, and sometimes in birds, and in a garment of the kind called كِسَآء, and the like, and in other things, a dark, or an ashy, dust-colour; or dingy ash-colour; or dark dustcolour;] a dust-colour intermixed with دُهْمَة [i. e. blackness or deep ash-colour]: (S, K:) in men, [and in other things,] a tawny, or brownish, colour; syn. سُمْرَةٌ: (S:) [and a blackish hue: and a blackish hue inclining to green:] and blackness: (TA:) [and intense blackness: see 9; and see also أَخْضَرُ:] pl. خُضَرٌ and خُضْرٌ. خُضْرِيَّةٌ A palm-tree (نَخْلَةٌ) that bears good green dates. (Az, K.) b2: A kind of dates, green, resembling glass, of a colour that is admired. (AHn.) خَضَارٌ Herbs, or leguminous plants, in the first state of their growth. (S, * K, * TA.) [See also خُضْرَةٌ.] b2: Also Milk mixed with much water: (S, K:) Az says that it is like سَمَارٌ, meaning as above, diluted so as to be of a dark, or an ashy, dust-colour (حَتَّى اخْضَرَّ): like as the rájiz says, جَاؤُوا بِضَيْحٍ هَلْ رَأَيْتَ الذِّئْبَ قَطْ [They brought milk mixed with much water. Hast thou ever seen the wolf?]: meaning that the milk was of an ash-colour (أَوْرَق), like the colour of the wolf, by reason of the great quantity of the water: or, as some say, milk and water in the proportion of one third of the former to two thirds of the latter: it is of any milk, that has been kept in a skin or that is fresh, and from any beast: some say that the word is a pl., [or rather a coll. gen. n.,] and that the sing., or n. un., is with ة. (TA.) خَضُورٌ: see أَخْضَرُ.

خُضَارَةٌ: see أَخْضَرُ, in the latter half of the paragraph. b2: خُضَارَةٌ, determinate, and imperfectly decl., (ISk, S, K,) because it has the quality of a proper name and the fem. gender with ة, like أُسَامَةٌ &c., (TA,) (tropical:) The sea; (ISk, S, A, K;) as also ↓ الأَخْضَرُ, and ↓ خُضَيْرٌ, (A, TA,) or ↓ خُضْرٌ. (So in a copy of the A.) [But it is used as a masc. proper name; for] you say, هٰذَا خُضَارَةُ طَامِيًا [This is the sea, in a state of rising, or becoming full, or becoming high and full]. (S, TA. [In one copy of the S, I find هٰذِهِ; but in others, هٰذَا; and in all, طَامِيًا.]) خَضِيرَةٌ A palm-tree (نَخْلَةٌ) of which the dates fall while unripe and green; (S, K;) as also ↓ مِخْضَارٌ. (TA.) خُضَيْرَةٌ dim. of خُضْرَةٌ.

A2: Also (tropical:) A woman who scarcely ever, or never, completes the fruit of her womb, so that she casts it. (TA.) خُضَارِىٌّ A certain bird; (S, K;) also called the أَخْيَل; (S;) regarded as of evil omen when it alighted upon the back of a camel: it is أَخْضَر [i. e. green, or of a dark or an ashy dust-colour], with redness in the حَنَك [or part beneath the beak], and is larger than the قَطَا: or certain green, or dark or ashy dust-coloured, birds, (طَيْرٌ خُضْرٌ,) also called قَارِيَة: A 'Obeyd asserts that the Arabs loved them, and likened to them a liberal, or bountiful, man: but ISd says, on the authority of the 'Eyn, that they regarded them as of evil omen: (TA:) [Golius states, on the authority of Meyd, that the خضارىّ is a bird of a blackish colour, called in Persian كَرايَهْ. See Bochart's Hieroz. p. ii. col. 61; referred to by Freytag.] b2: Also The [tree, or shrub, called]

رِمْث, when it has grown tall. (TA.) خُضَّارٌ A certain bird, (K,) green or of a dark or an ashy dust-colour (أَخْضَرُ). (TA.) خُضَّارَى: see خَضِرٌ. b2: Also A certain plant. (K.) أَخْضَرُ [Green; verdant;] of the colour termed خُضَّارَى; (S, A, Msb, K;) as also ↓ خَضِرٌ (Msb, K) and ↓ خَضِيرٌ and ↓ خَضُورٌ and ↓ يَخْضُورٌ and ↓ يَخْضِيرٌ: (K, TA: the last two written in the CK تَخْضُورٌ and تَخْضِيرٌ:) applied to a horse, [and to a camel, (see خُضْرَةٌ,) and to an ass, and sometimes to a bird, and to a garment of the kind called كِسَآء, and the like, and to various other things, of a dark, or an ashy, dust-colour; or dingy ash-colour; or dark dust-colour;] of a dust-colour intermixed with دُهْمَة [i. e. blackness or deep ash-colour]; which is the same as دَيْزَجٌ; (S;) in horses being distinguished as أَخْضَرُ أَدْغَمُ and أَخْضَرُ أَطْحَلُ and أَخْضَرُ أَوْرَقُ: (TA: [see the latter epithet in each of these cases:]) applied to a man, [and to other things,] tawny, or brownish: (S:) [and blackish: and of a blackish hue inclining to green:] and black; (S, K;) black-complexioned: (TA:) [and intensely black: it is said in the Msb, art. حتم, that الأَخْضَرُ is, with the Arabs, أَسْوَدُ; which may mean either that green is, with the Arabs, termed اسود, or that الاخضر is, with the Arabs, black: but the truth is, that each of the epithets أَخْضَرُ and أَسْوَدُ is sometimes used for the other: see what here follows, and see أَسْوَدُ: in Har p. 495, it is erroneously said, on the authority of Er-Rázee, that the اسود is not termed by the Arabs اخضر, although the اخضر is termed by them اسود because of its intense خُضْرَة and رِىّ:] the fem. is خَضْرَآءُ: and the pl. is خُضْرٌ. (Msb, TA.) You say شَجَرَةٌ خَضْرَآءُ A green, and fresh, or juicy, tree. (TA.) and مَآءٌ أَخْضَرُ Water inclining to a green colour, by reason of its clearness. (TA.) And أَخْضَرُ الجِلْدَةِ [lit. Tawny of skin:] meaning (assumed tropical:) of pure race; because the complexions of the Arabs are tawny; (S;) of genuine Arab race: (IB:) as in the saying of El-Lahabee, (S, TA,) El-Fadl Ibn-'Abbás, (TA,) وَأَنَا الأَخْضَرُ مَنْ يَعْرِفُنِى

أَخْضَرُ الجِلْدَةِ فِى بَيْتِ العَرَبْ [And I am the tawny: who knows me? the tawny of skin (or pure of race), of the family that comprises the nobility of the Arabs]. (S, IB.) And فُلَانٌ أَخْضَرُ القَفَا [lit. Such a one is blackish, or black, in the back of the neck:] meaning (tropical:) such a one is the son of a black woman: (Az, A:) or (tropical:) one who is slapped on the back of his neck: (A:) or (tropical:) a freedman, or an emancipated slave. (TA.) And أَخْضَرُ البَطْنِ (tropical:) A weaver: (A, TA:) because his belly, being stuck close to his loom, becomes blackened by it. (TA.) And أَخْضَرُ النَّوَاجِذِ (tropical:) An eater of onions and leeks: or a tiller, or cultivator, of the ground; because he eats herbs, or leguminous plants. (A.) and هُمْ خُضْرُ المَنَاكِبِ [lit. They are green in the shoulders, from carrying the produce of their land:] meaning (tropical:) they are in a state of great plenty. (K, TA.) And [hence, perhaps,] فُلَانٌ

أَخْضَرُ (tropical:) Such a one possesses abundant خَيْر [or wealth, or prosperity]: (A, TA:) [or it may mean goodness: for] الأَخْضَرُ, applied to a man, is an epithet of praise, whereby he may be likened to the sea, because it is described as green, or to the [rain or herbage called] رَبِيع; in both cases meaning (assumed tropical:) liberal, or bountiful; and it is so applied because خُضْرَةٌ is of the colours of the Arabs: and it is also an epithet of dispraise, as meaning (assumed tropical:) black by reason of baseness, ignobleness, or meanness. (Ham p. 282.) And شَابٌّ أَخْضَرُ (tropical:) A young man whose hair has begun to grow upon the sides of his face. (TA.) And كَتِيبَةٌ خَضْرَآءُ (tropical:) An army, or a troop of horse, overspread with the blackness of iron: (S, TA:) or a great army or troop of horse (K, TA) of which most of the men are clad in iron; like جَأْوَآءُ: (TA:) because of the خُضْرَة of the iron: (A:) [i. e.] because of the blackness thereof. (TA.) And اللَّيْلُ أَخْضَرُ (tropical:) Night is black. (TA.) And [hence,] جَنَّ عَلَيْهِ أَخْضَرُ الجَنَاحَيْنِ (tropical:) Night [lit. the black-winged] veiled him, concealed him, or covered him with its darkness. (A.) مُدْهَامَّتَانِ, in the Kur [lv. 64, relating to two gardens of Paradise], is explained by خَضْرَاوَانِ because it means Inclining to blackness, by reason of abundance of moisture, or irrigation. (S.) b2: الأَخْضَرُ used as a subst.: see خُضَارَةٌ. b3: The fem.

خَضْرَآءُ [is also used as a subst., and] signifies Gree herbs or leguminous plants; (Msb, K;) as also ↓ خُضَارَةٌ: (K:) pl. خَضْرَاوَاتٌ: by rule it should be خُضْرٌ; but as the quality of a subst. predominates in it, it has a pl. like the pl. of a subst., like صَحْرَاوَاتٌ pl. of صَحْرَآءٌ: (Msb:) this pl. occurs in the saying (in a trad., TA) لَيْسَ فِى

الخَضْرَاوَاتِ صَدَقَةٌ There is no poor-rate in the case of green herbs or leguminous plants; (Msb;) or fresh fruits and herbs or leguminous plants; (TA;) or fruits, such as the apple and the pear &c.; or herbs or leguminous plants, such as leeks and smallage and rue and the like; and خُضَرٌ, pl. of خُضْرَةٌ, is sometimes substituted for it. (Mgh.) [Hence,] إِيَّاكُمْ وَخَضْرَآءُ الدِّمَنِ, meaning (tropical:) Avoid ye the beautiful woman that is of bad origin: (S, A, Msb:) because what grows in a دِمْنَة [or place which men have blackened by their cooking, and where their camels or other beasts have staled and dunged], though it may be beautiful and bright, does not bear fruit [because it is neglected, and left unwatered], (S, Msb,) and soon becomes corrupt, or bad. (Msb. [See also دِمْنَةٌ: and see عُشْبَةٌ الدَّارِ, in art. عشب.]) b4: And الخَضْرَآءُ, as an epithet in which the quality of a subst. predominates, (TA,) (tropical:) The sky, or heaven; (S, A, K;) because of its greenness; like as the earth is called الغَبْرَآءُ. (TA.) You say, مَا تَحْتَ الخَضْرَآءِ أَكْرَهُ مِنْهُ (tropical:) [There is not under the sky one more hateful than he]. (A.) b5: and خَضْرَآءُ (tropical:) A bucket (A, K) with which water has been drawn long, so that it has become green or blackish &c. (حَتَّى اخْضَرَّتْ). (K.) b6: And (assumed tropical:) The congregated or collective body, and mass, or bulk, of a people. (S, K.) So in the saying, أَبَادَ اللّٰهُ خَضْرَآءَهُمْ (assumed tropical:) [May God destroy the congregated or collective body, mass, or bulk, of them]: (S:) or this means, (tropical:) their stock (شَجَرَة) from which they have branched off; (A;) [for] خَضْرَآءُ signifies the origin of anything: (TA:) or, their life in this present world: (Fr, TA:) or, as some say, their enjoyment and plenty; (TA;) [for] خَضْرَآءُ signifies prosperity, and plenty, and enjoyment: (TA in a later part of this art.:) or the right reading is غَضْرَآءَهُمْ, meaning “their prosperity, and their pleasantness of life, or plenty and prosperity.” (S. [See art. غضر.]) b7: البَقْلَةُ الخَضْرَآءُ: see خَضِرٌ. b8: الخُضْرُ, (T,) or الخَضْرَآءُ, (K,) The domestic pigeons; (T, K;) so called although of various colours, because their predominant colour is وُرْقَة [or ash-colour], or خُضْرَة [meaning a dark, or an ashy, dust-colour]: the خُضْر and the نُمْر [or spotted with white and black, &c.,] are especially characterized by the faculty of rightly directing their course. (T, TA.) b9: الأَخَاصِرُ [a pl. of الأَخْضَرُ used as a subst.] (tropical:) Gold and flesh-meat and wine; as also الأَحَامِرَةُ [as some explain this latter]. (Har p. 639.) b12: الأَخْضَرُ is also the name of [A certain star, or asterism; most probably either a of Piscis Australis or ε of Pegasus, or some star or asterism nearly in a line with those two;] one of the three أَنْوَآء of the rain called الخَرِيف; namely, the middle نَوْء of those three انوآء; the first being the نَسْرَانِ; and the last, the foremost of the فَرْغَانِ: see نَوْءٌ. 1 خَطَرَ بِذَنَبِهِ, (S, A, Mgh, K, TA,) aor. ـِ [in the CK, erroneously, خَطُرَ,] inf. n. خَطْرٌ and خَطَرَانٌ (S, Mgh, K) and خَطِيرٌ, (JK, K,) He (a camel, S, Mgh, or a stallion [camel], A, K) raised his tail time after time, and struck his thighs with it: (S:) or lashed with it to the right and left: (K:) or moved about his tail: (A, * Mgh, TA:) the stallion does so in threatening, through pride; (T, TA;) or in fighting with others, as though threatening; (A;) or by reason of emaciation occasioned by severe drought; or by reason of sprightliness: but a she-camel, to inform the stallion that she has become pregnant. (Har p. 264.) b2: (tropical:) A bet, wager, stake, or thing wagered; a thing staked at a shooting-match or a race, and taken by the winner: (T, S, * A, * Mgh, * Msb, * K, * TA:) [accord. to the TA, this is the primary signification; but accord. to the A, it is tropical:] pl. as above; (Msb;) or خِطَارٌ; and pl. pl. خُطُرٌ: (K: [but in some copies of the K, the last is written أَخْطَارٌ; and so in the TA, where it is added that some say it is pl. of خَطَرٌ, like as أَسْبَابٌ is of سَبَبٌ, and أَنْدَابٌ of نَدَبٌ:]) خَطَرٌ and سَبَقٌ and نَدَبٌ all signify the same. (TA.) You say, وَضَعُوا خَطَرًا (tropical:) [They laid a bet]. (A.) And أَحْرَزَ فُلَانٌ الخَطَرَ (tropical:) [Such a one won the bet]. (A.) b3: Hence, [app. as being likened to a stake won,] (TA,) (tropical:) Eminence; nobility; as also ↓ خَطْرٌ: (K, TA:) in which sense it has become so much used as to be, in this acceptation, conventionally regarded as proper: (TA:) also excellence: (TA:) and (as also ↓ خَطْرٌ, TA) rank; degree of dignity; station; of a man: (S, A, K, TA:) and highness of rank or account or estimation: and wealth: (TA:) pl. أَخْطَارٌ: (A:) accord. to some, it is only used to signify high rank: but accord. to others, you say, إِنَّهُ لَعَظِيمُ الخَطَرِ (tropical:) [Verily he is of great dignity] with respect to his good actions and his nobility, and صَغِيرُ الخَطَرِ (tropical:) [of little rank] with respect to his evil actions and his ignobleness. Yousay, هٰذَا خَطَرٌ لِهٰذَا, and ↓خَطِيرٌ, (assumed tropical:) This is like to that. (S.) And الجَنَّةُ لَا خَطَرَ لَهَا (assumed tropical:) Paradise has not its like. (TA.) And ↓فُلَانٌ لَيْسَ لَهُ خَطِيرٌ (assumed tropical:) Such a one has not his like or fellow. (TA.) خَطْرَةٌ [inf. n. of un. of خَطَرَ: and hence,] (assumed tropical:) A going away; and walking with an elegant and a proud and self-conceited gait, with an affected inclining of the body from side to side. (Har p. 35.) b2: See also خَاطِرٌ. b3: مَا لَقِيتُهُ إِلَا خَطْرَةً (tropical:) [I met him not save] sometime; (A;) or sometimes. (K.) And مَا ذَكَرْتُهُ إِلَّا خَطْرَةً بَعْدَ خَطْرَةٍ (tropical:) [I remembered not, or mentioned not, him, or it, save sometime after sometime; i. e., save] sometimes. مِنْهُ [app. referring to rain, and meaning (assumed tropical:) May God not make it to be the only shower, or fall, thereof, or the only time thereof; nor make it to be the last time thereof]; (TA;) آخِرَ مَخْطَرٍ meaning آخِرَ عَهْدٍ. (K, * TA.) خطار: see what next follows.

خَطِيرٌ The falling of a camel's tail between the parts above his thighs, when he moves it about; [see 1, first sentence;] as also ↓خطار. (TA: in which the latter is written without any syll. signs.) A2: A camel's nose-rein; (S, K;) a nose-rein by which a she-camel is led: (Kr:) a rope: (Sh, K:) these, says Meyd, are one and the same thing. (TA.) It is related in a trad. of 'Alee that he said to [ a mistake for “ respecting ”] 'Ammár, جُرُّوا لَهُ الخَطِيرَ مَا انْجَرَّ لَكُمْ [Pull ye his noserein as long as it will be pulled by you]: or, as some relate the saying, مَا جَرَّهُ لَكُمْ [as long as he pulls it to you]: meaning follow him as long as there is ground for doing so: or, accord. to some, as Sh says, act patiently towards 'Ammar as long as he acts patiently towards you: Meyd mentions it as a proverb. (TA.) A3: (tropical:) Eminent; noble; of high rank: (Msb, K, TA:) characterized by rank or station: (S, A:) pl. خُطْرٌ (K) and خَطِيرُونَ. (A.) And (assumed tropical:) Anything excellent. (TA.) You say أَمْرٌ خَطِيرٌ (assumed tropical:) A thing, or an affair, of high account or estimation. (TA.) b2: Also (assumed tropical:) Ignoble; of low rank; (Az, TA;) contemptible. خَطَّارٌ [is probably applied to a he-camel in a sense like that of the fem., here following].

خَطَّارَةٌ, applied to a she-camel, That lashes with the tail to the right and left: (K:) or that moves about her tail, when going, in a brisk, or sprightly, manner: (A:) or that raises her tail, in going along, by reason of briskness, and exceeding sprightliness. (Har p. 557.) [See 1, first sentence.] b2: [Hence,] (tropical:) A spear that quivers, vibrates, or shakes: (S, A, K:) or that does so much: and in like manner, a man. مِلْءٌ [A thing sufficient in quantity, or dimensions, for the filling of a vessel, &c., or] the quantity that a vessel, &c., holds when it is filled. (S, K.)

مِزْجُ شَىْءٍ, and ↓ مِزَاجُهُ, What is mixed, or mingled, with a thing; its admixture. (TA.) b2: الشَّرَابِ ↓ مِزَاجُ What is mixed with mine, or a beverage. (S, K.) الخَمْرِ كَافُورٌ ↓ مِزَاجُ [see Kur, lxxvi., 5,] The odour, not the taste, of the wine is [like] camphor. (TA.) b3: البَدَنِ ↓ مِزَاجُ [The constitution, or temperament, of the body;] the aggregate natural constituents (طَبَائِعُ) with which the body is composed; (S, K;) i. e. the four humours of the body; namely, black bile [السَّوْدَآءُ], yellow bile [الصَّفْرَآءُ], (المِرَّتَانِ), phlegm (البَلْغَمُ), and blood (الدَّمُ). (TA) Pl. أَمْزِجَةٌ. (Msb.) Yousay, ↓ هُوَ صَحِيحُ المِزَاجِ, and فَاسِدُهُ, He is of sound, and of unsound, constitution, or temperament: meaning the humours of the body. and أَمْزِجَةُ النِّسَآءِ مُخْتَلِفَةٌ The constitutions, or temperaments, of women are discordant, or various. (A.) b4: مِزْجٌ (As, K, &c.) and ↓ مَزْجٌ, (Az, S, &c.,) or the latter is erroneous, or a word of weak authority, (K,) Honey: (S, K:) or honey in the comb; syn. شَهْدٌ: (T:) so called because every sweet beverage is mixed with it. مسح

1 مَسَحَ شَيْئًا, aor. ـَ inf. n. مَسْحٌ; and ↓ مسّحهُ, inf. n تَمْسِيحٌ; He wiped a thing that was wet or dirty, with his hand, or passed his hand over it to remove the wet or dirt that was upon it: (L:) مَسْحٌ and تَمْسِيحٌ and ↓ تَمَسُّحٌ signifying the passing the hand over a thing that is flowing [with water or the like], or dirtied, soiled, or polluted, to remove the fluid or dirt, or soil or pollution; (L, K;) as when one wipes his head with his hand to remove water; and his forehead, to remove sweat. (L.) إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ: here أَرْجُلَكُمْ is in the acc. case as an adjunct to ايديكم; [i.e., as a third objective complement to the verb اغسلوا; not as an adjunct to رؤوسكم;] but some read أَرْجُلِكُمْ, putting it in the gen. case because of its proximity to رؤوسكم; (Jel;) [in like manner as خَرِبٍ is put in the gen. case in the phrase هٰذَا جُحْرُ ضَبٍّ خَرِبٍ, an ex. given by many of the grammarians, showing that this is allowable in prose,] notwithstanding that it is said, by Aboo-Is-hák the grammarian, that the putting a noun in the gen. case because of its proximity to a preceding noun in that case is not allowable except in poetry, when necessity requires it: (L:) the head, which is wiped, is mentioned between the arms and the feet, which are washed, to show the order which is to be observed in the purification. (Jel.) But مَسَحَ signifies both he wiped with the hand, and also he washed: so says IAth: (L:) and Az and IKt say the like: (Msb:) you say مَسَحْتُ يَدَىَّ بالمَآءِ, meaning I washed my hands with water. (Az, Msb.) b4: مَسَحَ شَيْئًا بِالمَآءِ He wiped a thing with his hand wetted with water; passed his hand, wetted with water, over a thing. (S, Msb, K,) [correctly] an arabicized word, [from the Hebrew,] originally مَشِيحَا, with ش: (T, Msb:) but the learned differ as to this word, whether it be Arabic or arabicized: F relates, in the K, his having mentioned, in his Expos. of the Meshárik el-Anwár, fifty opinions respecting the derivation of it; and in another work he has made the number fifty-six. (K.) b2: مَلُحَ, aor. ـُ (S, Msb, K,) inf. n. مَلَاحَةٌ (S, Msb) and مُلُوحَةٌ (S) and مِلْحٌ, the first of which is the most common, and the last the least common, (TA,) (tropical:) It (a thing, S, Msb) was, or became, goodly, beautiful, or pretty; (S, Msb, K;) and beautiful of colour; or beautiful and bright; (Msb;) pleasing to the eye or ear; facetious. (The lexicons passim.) b3: مَلَحَ القِدْرَ, aor. ـَ and مَلِحَ, (S, Msb, K,) inf. n. مَلْحٌ, (S, Msb,) He put salt into the cooking-pot: (K:) or put a proper quantity of salt into it: (S, A, Msb:) and accord. to Sb, ↓ ملّح and ↓ املح signify the same as مَلَحَ: (ISd:) or مَلَّحَهَا, inf. n. تَمْلِيحٌ, and أَمْلَحَهَا, signify he put much salt into it, (S, Msb, K,) so that it [meaning its contents] became spoiled. (S, A.) b4: مَلَحَ, (S, K,) inf. n. مَلْحٌ; (S;) and ↓ ملّح, inf. n. تَمْليحٌ; (TA;) He fed camels or sheep or goats with salt earth, (S, K,) or with earth and salt, the salt being more in quantity. (TA.) This is done when the animals cannot procure plants of the kind called حَمْض. (S.) b5: مَلَحَ, aor. ـَ and مَلِحَ, (K,) inf. n. مَلْحٌ; and ↓ ملّح; He salted fish. (TA.) b8: مَلِحَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. مَلَحٌ, (tropical:) He, or it, (a man, &c.,) was blue, or gray, [see مُلْحَةٌ,] in such a degree as to incline to whiteness; (Msb;) as also ↓ إِمْلَحَّ, inf. n. إِمْلِحَاحٌ; and ↓ أَمْلَحَ. (TA.) b9: Also, (tropical:) He was black, with whiteness overspreading his hair: or, of a dusty white colour: or, of a clear white colour: (Msb:) [and in like manner,] ↓ إِمْلَحَّ, inf. n. إِمْلِحَاحٌ, he (a ram) was of a white colour intermixed with black. (S, K.) A3: مَلِحَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. مَلَحٌ, He (a horse) had the kind of swelling called مَلَحٌ. (TA.) 2 مَلَّحَ See 1, in six places. b2: ملّح (tropical:) He (a poet) produced, or said, something goodly, beautiful, pretty, [or facetious]: (S, K:) and ↓ املح he produced, or said, a goodly, beautiful, or pretty, [or a facetious,] word, or saying, or speech. (Lth.) 3 مَالَحْتُ فُلَانًا, (A,) inf. n. مُمَالَحَةٌ, (S, A, K,) (tropical:) I ate with such a one. (S, A, K.) Abu-l-Kásim Er-Zejjájee disapproves of this, saying that a verb of this form is only derived from an inf. n., as in the cases of ضَارَبَ and قَاتَلَ; whereas this is derived from مِلْحٌ, a subst. [But his objection seems to me invalid: this may be an anomalous instance, and yet of classical authority, like many others.] b2: مَالَحَهُ, inf. n. مُمَالَحَةٌ and مِلَاحٌ, (tropical:) He was, or became, his foster-brother. (L, TA.) [المِلَاحُ is explained in the K by المُرَاضَعَةُ: Lth explaines it by الرَّضَاعُ, as is mentioned in the TA: المُمَالَحَةُ is explained in the A, Mgh, L, and other lexicons by المُرَاضَعَةُ: in the copies of the K in my hands, by الرَّضَاعُ; and so in one copy of the S: in another copy of the S written الرِّضَاعُ; and in another الرّضَاع, without any vowel to the ر: الرضَاعُ, syn. with المُرَاضَعَةُ, is evidently the right reading.] Abu-l-Kásim Er-Zejjájee disapproves of the verb used as signifying the act of two men's sucking each other; [but this is not what is meant by المراضعة;] and pronounces it a post-classical word. (TA.) Yousay بَيْنَهُمَا حُرْمَةُ المُمَالَحَةِ Between them two is the sacred or inviolable bond, or obligation, which is the consequence of their being fosterbrothers. (A.) 4 أَمْلَحَ See 1, in four places, and 2. b2: املح القَوْمُ (assumed tropical:) The people possessed milk; (tropical:) the people had fat camels or other beasts. (L.) b3: املح (tropical:) He (a camel) carried fat; (L;) [meaning was fat]. املح القِدْرَ (tropical:) He put some fat [which is termed مِلْح] into the cookingpot. (AA.) A2: املح الإِبِلَ He gave the camels salt water to drink. (K.) b2: املحت الإِبِلُ The camels came to salt water to drink. (S.) b3: مَا أَمَيْلِحَ زَيْدًا (tropical:) [How very goodly, or beautiful, or pretty, is Zeyd! a diminutive form, meant to denote the contrary of the sense of a dim., being what is termed تَصْغِيرُ تَعْظِيمٍ, from مَا أَمْلَحَهُ:] (T, S, K:) the verb is here put into the dim. form, being meant to be used as an epithet, as though they said مُلَيْحٌ: (T:) it is the only instance of a verb put into this form, except مَا أُحَيْسِنَهُ, (S, K,) and, as some say, مَا أُحَيْلَاهُ. (TA.) This is said accord. to the doctrine of the Basrees, who assert the افعل of wonder to be a verb: but as to the Koofees, who say that it is a noun, [meaning an epithet,] they allow the formation of the dim. from it without restriction; and from its admitting the dim. form, they argue that it is a noun. (MF.) b4: مَا أَمْلَحَ وَجْهَهُ, and فِعْلَهُ, (tropical:) How goodly, beautiful, or pretty, is his face! and how good is his action! (A.) b5: أَمْلِحْنِى بِنَفَسِكَ (tropical:) Grace me, or recommend me, (زَيِّنِّى,) [by thy speech]. (T, L.) 5 تَمَلَّحَ See 1, in two places. b2: فُلَانٌ يَتَظَرَّفُ وَيَتَمَلَّحُ (tropical:) [Such a one affects to be clever, or graceful, and to be goodly, beautiful, pretty, or facetious]. (A.) 9 إِمْلَحَّ See 1, in two places.10 استملحهُ (assumed tropical:) He esteemed him, or it, goodly, beautiful, or pretty; (S, K;) [pleasing to the eye or ear: (the lexicons passim:)] or found him, or it, to be so (TA.) مَلْحٌ: see مِلْحٌ.

مِلْحٌ (S, M, K) and ↓ مَلْحٌ (M) (tropical:) The act of sucking the mother or any nurse; syn. رَضَاعٌ; (S, M, K;) a child's sucking its mother. (Abu-l- Kásim Ez-Zejjájee.) b2: مِلْحٌ (tropical:) Milk. (IAar.) The following verse of Abu-t-Tamahán, who had some camels, of the milk whereof he gave to drink to a people that afterwards made an attack upon them, and took them, is cited by As, [app., accord. to the S, as an ex. of ملح in the sense of رَضَاع; but as MF observes, it may be taken as an ex. of that word in the sense of milk;] وِإِنِّى لَأَرْجُو مِلْحَهَا فِى بُطُونِكُمْ وَمَا بَسَطَتْ مِنْ جِلدِ أَشْعَثَ أَغْبَرَا (S, L.) The poet says, Verily I hope that ye may regard (أَنْ تَرْعَوْا [which is understood]) the milk which ye have drank, of these camels, [lit., their milk in your bellies,] and the skins which they have expanded, of a people with matted and dusty hair, and of a dusty hue; as though their skins had dried up, and they had fattened upon them. [Another explanation will be noticed below.] IB says, that the last word should be read أَغْبَرِ, for the sake of the rhyme; for each verse of the poem to which it belongs ends with kesreh. (L.) A2: مِلْحٌ a thing well known, (S, K,) [Salt;] that with which food is made pleasant: (L:) of the fem. gender (Z) generally; (O;) sometimes masc.: (K:) pl. مِلَاحٌ. (Msb.) Dim.

مُلَيْحَةٌ. (Msb.) b2: مَآءٌ مِلْحٌ, (S, K, &c.,) originally ↓ مَلِحْ, from the verb مَلُحَ, like خَشِنٌ from خَشُنَ, contracted because of the frequency of its usage; (Msb;) and ↓ ماء مَلِيحٌ, (K,) and ↓ مَالِحٌ; (IAar, ADk, Az;) [respecting which last, see what will be found after the explanation;] Salt water. (S, K, &c.) J says, that مَاء مالح is not allowable, except in a bad dial.: but Az says, that, though rarely found in the language of the Arabs, it is not to be rejected; and IB says, that it occurs in verses of chaste poets; and may be considered as used after the manner of a rel. n., [meaning ذُو مِلْحٍ,] like رَجُلٌ تَارِسٌ, i. e. ذُو تُرْسٍ, and دَارِعٌ, i. e. ذُو دِرْعٍ: (TA:) it is a chaste word, of the dial. of El-Hijáz, but extr., being from أَمْلَحَ المَآءُ, like as you say بَاقِلٌ from أَبْقَلَ المَوْضِعُ; and when it is said that it is rare, it is meant that it is not agreeable with its verb, not that it is rare with respect to usage, seeing that it is of the dial. of the people of El-Hijáz, who selected the most chaste words of the various dialects: or it is regularly formed from مَلَحَ المَأءُ, a form of the verb sometimes used. (Msb.) The pl. of مِلْحٌ is مِلْحَةٌ and مِلَاحٌ and مِلَحٌ: (L, K:) and sometimes is said أَمْوَاهٌ مِلْحٌ salt waters; and رَكِيَّةٌ مِلْحَةٌ a salt well. (L.) b3: مِلَاحٌ Salt waters. (T, K.) ↓ قَلِيبٌ مَليِحٌ A well of salt water: (S, K:) pl. أَقْلِبَةٌ مِلَاحٌ, occurring in a verse of 'Antarah. (S.) b4: مِلْحٌ (assumed tropical:) Knowledge; science; learning; syn. عِلْمٌ. (IKh, Kz, K.) b5: (assumed tropical:) Men of science; learned men; syn. عُلَمَآءُ. (IKh, Kz, K.) b6: (tropical:) Goodliness, or beauty. (K.) [Accord. to the TA, it is an inf. n.: see مَلُحَ.] b7: (tropical:) Fat, as a subst. (Sh, K.) b8: (tropical:) Fatness: (K:) or a small degree of fatness. (TA.) b9: مِلْحٌ and ↓ مِلْحَةٌ (tropical:) A sacred or inviolable bond, or the like, or any compact, bond, or obligation, which one is under an obligation to respect, or honour, or the cancelling or breaking of which renders one obnoxious to blame; syn. حُرْمَةٌ and ذِمَامٌ; and a compact, or confederacy; syn. حِلْفٌ. (K.) In some copies of the K, for حِلْفٌ is put حَلفٌ. (TA.) b10: Accord. to Aboo-Sa'eed, this is the signification of the former word in the verse of Abu-t-Tamahán cited above, and the poet means, I hope that God may punish you for your perfidious violation of the sacred obligation to their owner, which they imposed upon you. Yousay بَيْنَ فُلَانٍ وَفُلَانٍ مِلْحٌ, and ↓ مِلْحَةٌ, There is a sacred or inviolable bond, &c., between such a one and such a one. [This meaning is derived from مِلْحٌ as signifying “ salt; ” the eating of which with another imposes upon the two parties a sacred mutual obligation.] The Arabs, says Abu-l-'Abbás, pay a high respect to salt and fire and ashes. (L.) [You say,] مِلْحُهُ عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ, so in the copies of the K, but correctly على رُكْبَتَيْهِ, as in all the other lexicons, (TA,) (tropical:) [lit., His salt is upon his knees;] meaning he has no good faith, so as to fulfil his promises, or engagements: (K:) or he has little good faith, so as to fulfil his promises, &c., for the Arabs swear by salt, and by water, because of their respect for them: (IAar:) or he violates the obligation imposed by such, the smallest thing making him forget it, like as the least thing scatters salt if a person puts it upon his knees: (T:) or he is fat: (K:) As says, that in the following verse, لَا تَلُمْهَا إِنَّهَا مِنْ نِسْوَةٍ

مِلْحُهَا مَوْضُوعَةٌ فَوْقَ الرُّكَبْ [Blame her not; for she is of women whose fat is placed above the knees;] the woman meant was of the people called Ez-Zenj, whose fat is in their thighs, and ملحها signifies their fat: (TA:) or he is sharp in his anger: (K:) or he is of evil disposition, rendered angry by the least thing; like as salt upon the knee is scattered by the least thing: (T:) or he is frequently engaged in altercation; as though his knees were much wounded by his long kneeling in altercation, and by his long striking his knees against those of another, and he therefore put salt upon them to cure them. A3: نَبْتٌ مِلْحٌ, and ↓ مَالِحٌ, A plant of the kind called حَمْضٌ. (ISk, S.) مَلَحٌ: see مُلْحَةٌ. b2: A certain disease and fault in the kind leg of a beast of carriage; (TA;) a swelling in the hock, or hock-tendon, (عُرْقُوب,) of a horse; (S, K;) less than what is called جَرَذٌ; which is a name given to it when it has become violent. (S.) مَلِحٌ: see مِلْحٌ.

مَلْحَةٌ (tropical:) A single feed taken by a child from the breast. مَلْجَةٌ, with ج, signifies a single suck. (TA.) A2: مَلْحَةٌ The main body of the sea; or the fathomless deep of the sea; or a great expanse of sea of which the extremities cannot be seen. (K.) مُلْحَةٌ (S, K) and ↓ مَلَحٌ (K) (tropical:) A white colour intermixed with black: (S, K:) whiteness overspreading blackness in the human hair, and in anything: or a dusty white colour: or a clear white colour: or whiteness inclining to any kind of redness; like the colour of the antelope. (L.) [See also أَمْلَحُ.] b2: Also, مُلْحَةٌ (tropical:) The utmost degree of blueness or grayness, [app. meaning the latter, from مِلْحٌ as signifying “ salt,” as salt in the state in which it is commonly used in Arabia is of a pale gray colour,] أَشَدُّ الزَّرقِ: (K:) or blueness, or grayness, (زُرْقَة,) of such a degree as to incline to whiteness. (S.) [See أَمْلَحُ.] b3: مُلْحَةٌ (tropical:) A goodly, beautiful, pretty, or facetious, story, or narrative, and word, or saying, or speech; a bon-mot; (L;) وَاحِدَةُ المُلَحِ مِنَ الأَحَادِيثِ; (S, K;) [what is deemed beautiful, elegant, facetious, or the like, of stories, &c.: (Ibr D:) and so ↓ أُمْلُوحَةٌ, coupled with أُفْكُوهَةٌ in art. فكه in the TA:] also said to signify a bad, an abominable, or a foul, word, saying, or speech; a meaning taken from a trad. of 'Áïsheh, who applied this term [perhaps ironically] to a bad answer which she had given in consequence of her having misunderstood a question put to her: (L:) pl. مُلَحٌ. (S, K.) As said نِلْتُ بِالمُلَحِ [I have attained to the station, or rank, to which I have attained by means of goodly, or facetious, sayings, &c.] (S.) حَدَّثْتُهُ بِالمُلَحِ (tropical:) [I related to him goodly, beautiful, pretty, or facetious, stories.] (A.) b4: [A curiosity, an extraordinary thing.]

مِلْحَانُ, (S, K,) sometimes written ↓ مَلْحَانُ, (TA, art. شيب, voce شِيبَانُ,) [written in both these ways in a copy of the S in my hands,] (tropical:) A name given to one of the winter-months, because of the whiteness of its snow: (S:) the month called Jumáda-l-Ákhireh, جُمَادَى الآخِرَةٌ, (K,) [in the old Arabian calendar;] because of its whiteness; Jumáda-l-Oolà, جُمَادَى الأُولَى, being called شِيبَانُ: or this was a name of Kánoon el-Owwal, كَانُونُ الأَوَّلُ; (TA;) and مِلْحَانُ was Kánoon eth-Thánee, كَانُونُ الثَّانِى: (K, TA:) [but see شِيبَانُ:] or شِيبَانُ and مِلْحَانُ were names applied to the days when the earth was white with hoar-frost, or rime. ('Amr Ibn-Abee-'Amr, Az.) مُلَاحٌ: see مَلِيحٌ.

مَلِيحٌ and ↓ مُلَاحٌ and ↓ مُلَّاحٌ, (S, K,) but the last signifies more than the first, (T, S,) (tropical:) Goodly; beautiful; pretty; (S, Msb, K;) and beautiful of colour; or beautiful and bright; (Msb;) pleasing to the eye or ear; facetious: (the lexicons passim:) fem. of the first with ة: (Msb:) pl. of the same, مِلَاحٌ and أَمْلَاحٌ; (AA, S, K;) and of مُلَاحٌ, مُلَاحُونَ; and of مُلَّاحٌ, مُلَّاحُونَ. مُلَاحِىٌّ, sometimes written مُلَّاحِىٌّ, (S, K,) occurring in poetry written in the latter manner, (S,) A kind of white, long-shaped, grape: (S, K:) so called from [the colour termed] المُلْحَة; (S;) or from the [plant called] مُلَّاح, because of its taste. (AHn.) b2: Also, A kind of fig, (K,) small, of the colour termed أَمْلَح, very sweet, and which is dried. (TA.) b3: Also, A species of the tree called أَرَاك in which is whiteness and redness and the colour termed شُهْبَة. (AHn, K.) مَلَّاحٌ A seller of salt: or a possessor of salt: (IAar, K:) as also ↓ مُتَمَلِّحٌ: (K:) which also signifies one who provides himself with salt for travelling-provision: or a trader in salt. (TA.) b2: مَلَّاحٌ A sailor; a shipman; a seaman, or mariner: (T, S, K:) so called because constantly upon the salt water. (T.) b3: Also, One who constantly attends to a river (نَهْر; in some copies of the K, بَحْر; TA) to put its mouth into a right or proper state. (K.) b4: His occupation is called ↓ مِلَاحَةٌ and ↓ مَلَّاحِيَّةٌ. (K.) مُلَّاحٌ: see مَلِيحٌ. b2: [A coll. gen. n.] A certain plant, (S, K,) of the kind called حَمْضٌ; (Lth, T, S;) a leguminous garden-plant; n. un. with ة; it is a tender plant, with a salt flavour, growing in smooth, or soft, and depressed, tracts of land: (T:) a herb of the kind called حَمْض, having twigs and leaves, growing in tracts such as are called قِفَاف, of a salt flavour, wholesome to camels and sheep: (M:) a plant like the قُلَّام, in which is a red hue, eaten with milk, bearing grain which is collected like as is that of the فَثّ, and made into bread, and eaten: so says AHn, and he adds, I think that it is thus called because of its colour; not because of its taste: and in another place he says, that the مُلَّاح is the raceme of the كَبَاث of the أَرَاك; thus called because of its taste, which is hot, as though containing salt. مَلَّاحَةٌ (S, K) and ↓ مَمْلَحَةٌ (K) A place where salt is generated. (S, K.) مَلَّاحِيَّةٌ: see مَلَّاحٌ.

مَالِحٌ: see مِلْحٌ and مَمْلُوحٌ.

أَمْلَحُ (tropical:) A ram, (S, K,) and a he-goat, (S,) of a white colour intermixed with black: (S, K:) any hair, and wool, and the like, in which are whiteness and blackness: (TA:) that in which are whiteness and blackness, the former colour predominating: (Az, Ks and others:) or of a dusty white colour: or of a clear white colour: (Msb:) fem. مَلْحَآءُ; applied to a ewe of a white colour intermixed with black: (K:) or black, with its hair pervaded by whiteness. (TA.) Aboo-Dhubyán Ibn-Er-Raabal employs املح as one of four epithets which he applies to those old men most hateful to him. (S.) b2: Also, (tropical:) Blue, or gray, [see مُلْحَةٌ,] in such a degree as to incline to whiteness; an epithet applied to a man, &c. (Msb) أَمْلَحٌ العَيْنِ Having the eye of that colour. (S.) b3: Hence, كَتِيبَةٌ مَلْحَآءُ [meaning (tropical:) An army, or a troop of horse, appearing of a white and black, or gray, hue, by reason of their glittering weapons; see also كتيبة شَهْبَآءُ]: (S:) or one that is white and great: (TA:) or, great. (K.) b4: أَمْلَحُ (assumed tropical:) Dew that falls in the night upon leguminous plants: so called because of its whiteness. (L.) Er-Rá'ee says, describing some camels, أَقَامَتْ بِهِ حَدَّ الرَّبِيعِ وَجَارُهَا

أَخُو سَلْوَةٍ مَسَّى بِهِ اللَّيْلُ أَمْلَحُ meaning [by املح] dew: [They remained in it during the period of the season called الربيع, and their preserver from thirst was attended by comfort, being dew brought by the night]: he says, they remained in that place during the days of the season called الربيع, and while the dew lasted, so that he was (فَهُوَ [but this appears to be a mistake for فَهِىَ, “so that they were,”]) in a comfortable state of life: and he says مسّى به because the dew falls in the night: (S, L:) by جارها he means the night-dew which preserved them from thirst. (L.) b5: المَلْحَآءُ was also the name of a particular troop belonging to the family of ElMundhir, (S, K,) of the Kings of Syria, who had another called الشَّهْبَآءُ. (TA.) b6: نَمِرَةٌ مَلْحَآءُ A بُرْدَة with black and white stripes. (L.) شَجَرَةٌ مَلْحَآءُ (assumed tropical:) A tree of which the leaves have fallen, (L, K,) the branches, or twigs, remaining green. (L.) b2: ↓ مُمَلِّحٌ (tropical:) A camel destined for slaughter that is fat: (S:) or having some remains of fatness. (L.) (S.) ISd says, that some have disapproved of this word, as also of مليح, not regarding the above verse as an evidence. You says, that مليح and مملوح are better than مالح. مِيدَآءٌ The amount, and measure, of a thing: (L, K:) and the two sides, and distance, or extent, of a thing, (L,) or of a road; (K;) and the surface of a road. (L.) One says, لَمْ أَدْرِ مَا مِيدَآءُ ذٰلِكَ I knew not what was the amount of that, and its measure: or, what was the measure of its two sides, and its extent: as also مِيتَاؤُهُ. (L.) b2: The extreme limit of the distance to which horses run; and so ميِئْتآءٌ. (S, TA, art. أتى.) A2: مِيدَآءٌ A mode, manner, fashion, or from. And دَارِى بِمَيْدَا دَارِهِ, with fet-h to the م; (as also بِمِيتَآءِ داره, L in art. ميت; and بِمِئْتَآءِ داره, S in art. اتى;) My house is opposite to his house. (S, O, Msb, K; all in art. عقل.) b8: الإِمْسَاك, in relation to تَحْجِيل: see an unusual application of it in art. طلق, conj. 4.5 تَمَسَّكَ see 4 and 8. b2: تَمَسَّكَ بِحَبْلِهِ He held fast by his covenant: see أَعْصَمَ.6 تَمَاسَكَ He withheld, or restrained, himself: (PS:) he was able, or powerful; as also تَمَالَكَ, q. v. (KL.) b2: مَا تَمَاسَكَ أَنْ فَعَلَ كَذَا He could not restrain himself from doing so; syn. مَا تَمَالكَ. (S.) b3: تَمَاسَكَ It held together. b4: إِنَّهُ لَذُو تَمَاسُكٍ (assumed tropical:) Verily he possesses intelligence. (TA.) and مَابِهِ تَمَاسُكٌ (tropical:) There is no good in him. (TA.) See مُسْكَةٌ.8 اِمْتَسَكَ بِهِ He clutched, or griped, him, or it; i. q. بِهِ ↓ تَمَسَّكَ. (MA.) 10 اِسْتَمْسَكَ البَطْنُ [The belly (or bowels) became bound, or confined]. (TA in art. عقل.) b2: اِسْتَمْسَكَ بِهِ [sometimes] He sought to lay hold upon it. (Bd, in ii. 257.) b3: اِسْتَمْسَكَ: see an ex. voce صِرْعَةٌ.

مِسْكٌ [Musk: it is obtained from the muskdeer, moschus moschiferus; being found in the male animal, in a vesicle near the navel and prepuce.] It is masc. and fem. (IAmb, TA voce ذَكِىٌّ.) مَسَكٌ Tortoise-shell; syn. ذَبْلٌ: (K:) bracelets made of tortoise-shell (ذَبْلٌ), or of عاج [ivory]: (S, Msb:) bracelets and anklets made of horn and of عاج: n. un. with مُسْكَةٌ. (K.) مُسْكَةٌ Intelligence: (Msb:) or full intelligence, (K, TA,) and judgment; judgment and intel-ligence to which one has recourse; as also مُسْكٌ, not ↓ مَسِيكٌ, as in the K; (TA;) i. q. تَمَاسُكٌ. (Mgh.) You say, لَيْسَ لَهُ مُسْكَةٌ He has no intel-ligence. (Msb.) b2: لَيْسَ بِهِ مُسْكَةٌ He has no strength. (Msb.) مُسْكَانٌ : see art. سكن.

مِسَاكٌ or مَسَاكٌ A kind of needles: see مِدَادٌ.

مَسِيكٌ : see مُسْكَةٌ.

مَسَّاكاتٌ [in the CK, art. روض, written مُسّاكات,] Places, in land, or in the ground, to which the rain-water flows, and which retain it. (TA.) See ضَابِطَةٌ.

مُمْسَكٌ , said of a horse, white on both fore and kind leg on the same side: see مُحَجَّلٌ.

مُتَمَاسِكٌ Compact in the limbs, (TA in art. بدن,) or flesh. (TA in this art.)
