أف1 شَئِفَتْ رِجْلُهُ, (S, O, K,) aor. ـَ (K,) inf. n. شَأَفٌ; (S, O;) and شُئِفَتْ رجله; (O, K;) His foot became affected with an ulcer, or imposthume, such as is termed شَأْفَةٌ, breaking out in it. (S, O, K.) b2: Accord. to some, (O,) شَأفُ الجُرْحِ (O, K, [in my MS. copy of the K شَأْفُ, and so accord. to the TK, and in the CK without ء, but I think that the right reading is شَأَفُ, and that its verb is شَئِفَ, or it may be شَأْفُ, and inf. n. of شُئِفَ,]) signifies The wound's becoming in a corrupt state, so that it will hardly, or not at all, be cured. (O, K.) b3: شَئِفَ صَدْرُهُ عَلَىَّ His bosom bore concealed enmity and violent hatred, or rancour, malevolence, malice, or spite, against me. A2: شَئِفْتُهُ, (S, O, K,) and شَئِفْتُ لَهُ, (Az, O, K,) aor. ـَ (K,) inf. n. شَأْفٌ, (S, O, K,) in the Bári' شَأَفٌ, with fet-h to the ء, (TA,) and شَآفَةٌ; (O, K;) and شَئِفْتُ مِنْهُ, inf. n. شَأْفٌ, omitted in the K [and S, and O], but correct, as Sgh has indicated in the Tekmileh; (TA;) I hated him; (S, O, K;) like شَنِفْتُ لَهُ; (S and O in art. شنف;) namely, a man: (S, O:) or the first and second signify, (K,) or the first also signifies accord. to IAar, (O,) I feared, when I saw him, namely, a man, that I should smite him with an evil eye, or should guide against him one whom he disliked, or hated; (O;) or I feared that he would smite me with an evil eye, or I guided against him one whom he disliked, or hated. (K.) b2: And شُئِفَ He (a man, A'Obeyd, O) was frightened, or afraid. (A'Obeyd, O, K.) 10 اِسْتَشْأَفَتْ, said of a قُرْصَة, [so in the TA, an evident mistranscription, app. for قَرْحَة, and so in the next paragraph, i. e. an ulcer, or imposthume,] means صَارَ لَهَا أَصْلٌ [It had, or acquired, root, or rootedness, or permanence; as though it became a شَأْفَة]. (TA.) شَئِفٌ [part. n. of شَئِفَ, and properly meaning Having an ulcer, or imposthume, such as is termed شَأْفَة,] is applied as an epithet to a heart, in the following verse, cited by IKtt, يَا أَيُّهَا الجَاهِلُ أَلَّا تَنْصَرِفْ وَلَمْ تُدَاوِ قُرْصَةَ القَلْبِ الشَّئِفْ [in which قُرْصَةَ is doubtless a mistranscription (like that in the next preceding paragraph) for قَرْحَةَ; the obvious meaning of the verse being, (assumed tropical:) O thou ignorant one, wherefore wilt not thou revert, when thou hast not cured the sore of an ulcerated heart?]. (TA.) ?? An ulcer, or imposthume, (قَرْحَةٌ,) that breaks out in the bottom of the foot, and is cauterized, (S, IAth, O, K,) or is cut, (Yaakoob, IAth, O,) and goes away; (Yaakoob, S, IAth, O, K;) and the word is also pronounced without ء [i. e. شَافَةٌ]: (IAth, TA:) or an ulcer, or imposthume, in the foot of a person, who dies if it is cut: (O, K:) and it is also said to be a tumour in the hand, and foot, from the entering of a piece of wood, or stick, into the flesh of the foot, or the palm of the hand, and its remaining therein, so that the place swells, and becomes large. (TA.) اِسْتَأْصَلَ اللّٰهُ شَأْفَتَهُ (S, O, K) is a prov. (S, O) meaning (assumed tropical:) May God cause him to go away like as the شأفة above mentioned goes away: (S, O, K:) or this means may God extirpate him: for b2: شَأْفَةٌ is also syn. with أَصْلٌ [i. e. Root, &c.]: (O, K:) so says Sh. (O.) [See also 10 in art. اصل: and see what here follows.] b3: It is also said to signify The family and household of a man: and hence the form of imprecation, اِسْتَأْصَلَ اللّٰهُ شَأْفَتَهُمْ [May God extirpate their family and household]. (TA.) b4: And (tropical:) Enmity. (TA.) شَأَفَةٌ, thus with fet-h to the ء, is an epithet applied to a man, meaning Mighty, potent, powerful, or strong; inaccessible, or difficult of access. (TA.) رِجْلٌ مَشْؤُوفَةٌ A foot affected with an ulcer, or imposthume, such as is termed سَأْفَةٌ, breaking out in it: (O, K:) from شُئِفَتْ رِجْلُهُ. (O, * K, * TA.) b2: And مَشْؤُوفٌ, from شُئِفَ, Frightened, or afraid; (A'Obeyd, O, K;) applied to a man. (A'Obeyd, O.) 1 شُئِمَ عَلَيْهِمْ (S; MA, K,) inf. n. شُؤْمٌ, (MA,) He (a man, S) was, or became, unlucky, or inauspicious, (صَارَ شُؤْمًا, S, K, in the MA شوم شد,) to them: (S, MA, K;) as also شَأَمَهُمْ, and شَأَمَ عليهم, and شَؤُمَ عليهم: (K:) or شَأَمَهُمْ, (Az, Ham p. 224,) or شَأَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ, (S,) or both of these, (TA,) aor. ـَ (S, TA,) inf. n. شَأْمٌ, (TA,) he drew upon them ill luck, or evil fortune; (S, TA;) or caused ill luck, or evil fortune, to befall them from him: (Az, Ham ubi suprà, TA:) or شُؤُمٌ as an inf. n. signifies the being unlucky: and the rendering unlucky: and so شُومٌ [as it is commonly pronounced: see شُؤُمٌ below]. (KL.) A2: And شَأَمَهُمْ, inf. n. شَأْمٌ, so in the L; in the K, ↓ شَأَّمَهُمْ, inf. n. تَشْئِيمٌ; but the former is the right; (TA;) He made them to go, or journey, to الشَّأْم [i. e. Syria]. (K, TA.) 2 شَاَّ^َ see what next precedes.3 شَائِمْ بِأَصْحَابِكَ Take thou the direction of the left hand with thy companions: (S, K, TA:) يَامِنْ signifies “ take thou the direction of the right hand. ” (TA.) b2: And شَآمَ He (a man) came to الشَّأْم [i. e. Syria]: like يَامَنَ signifying

“ he came to El-Yemen. ” (TA. [See also 4.]) 4 اشأم He desired the left: like as أَيْمَنَ signifies “ he desired the right. ” (TA in art. يمن.) b2: And He (a man, S) came to الشَّأْم [i. e. Syria]: (S, K, TA: [see also 3:]) or he went thither: and أَيْمَنَ signifies “ he came to El-Yemen. ” (TA.) A2: مَا أَشْأَمَهُ (S, K, TA) How unlucky, or inauspicious, is he! (TA:) the vulgar say, مَا

أَيْشَمَهُ. (S, TA.) 5 تشأّم بِهِ, (MA, TA,) from الشُّؤْمُ, (TA,) He found him, or it, unlucky, or inauspicious: and he became unlucky by means of him, or it: (MA:) or تشأّم signifies he had ill luck, or evil fortune. (KL.) See also 6. b2: And تشأّم He took the direction of his left hand: (K, TA:) and in like manner تَيَامَنَ, [whence it seems that تشأّم in the sense expl. above may be a mistake for ↓ تشآءم,] “ he took the direction of his right hand. ” (TA.) b3: And He asserted his relationship to [the people of] الشَّأْم [i. e. Syria]: (S, K:) a verb similar to تكوّف and تقيّص. (S.) 6 تشآءموا بِهِ, (S, Msb, K, TA, &c.,) in some of the copies of the K ↓ تشأّموا, (TA,) [and in like manner تشأّم بِهِ, which is often opposed to تَيَمَّنَ بِهِ, (see an instance in Bd xvii. 14,) is used in the K in art. عطس, and تشأّم مِنْهُ in the TA in the same art. as on the authority of IKh, whence it seems that both these verbs are correct in the sense here following, though the former is probably preferable, and بِهِ ↓ استشأم is used in the same manner in “ Les Oiseaux et les Fleurs,”

p. 83, as mentioned by Freytag, so that تشأّم به and استشأم are the contr. of تيمّن به and استيمن,] They augured evil from him, or it; regarded him, or it, as an evil omen; (Msb, KL; *) like تَطَيَّرُوا بِهِ: (Msb:) deemed him, or it, unlucky, or inauspicious. (KL.) b2: تشآءم, thus, with medd, also signifies He took the direction of الشَّأْم[i. e. Syria]. (TA.) b3: See also 5.10 إِسْتَشْاَ^َ see the next preceding paragraph.

الشَّأْمُ, the name of a certain country [i. e. Syria], is masc. and fem.; (S;) sometimes masc.: (K:) and may also be pronounced الشَّامُ [as it commonly is in the present day]. (Msb.) b2: [And as this country lies on the north of Arabia, الشَّأْمُ also signifies The northern region; opposed to اليَمَنُ.]

شُؤْمٌ, (S, Msb, K, &c.,) thus, with ء, but always pronounced شُومٌ, without ء, (TA,) is an inf. n.: (MA, KL: [see 1, first sentence, in two places:]) and signifies [as a simple subst.] Unluckiness, inauspiciousness, unfortunateness, unprosperousness, evil fortune, or ill luck; contr. of يُمْنٌ; (S, K;) [i. e.] i. q. َحْسٌ: (Har p. 158:) evil [of any kind]; syn. شَرٌّ: (Msb:) [and particularly] an evil omen: (PS:) and ↓ مَشْــأَمَةٌ signifies the same as شُؤْمٌ: (TA:) [or, like مَنْحَسَةٌ, a cause of unluckiness, &c.:] مَشَائِمُ is a pl. of شُؤْمٌ, [or of ↓ مَشْــأَمَةٌ: if of the former,] irreg., like as its syn. مَنَاحِسُ is [said to be] of نَحْسٌ. (TA in art. نحس.) It is said in a trad., إِنْ كَانَ الشُّوْمُ فَفِى

ثَلَاث ٍ المَرْأَةِ وَالدَّارِ وَالفَرَسِ, meaning If there be that whereof the consequence is disliked, or hated, and feared, [or if there be unluckiness,] it is in three things, the wife, and the house, and the horse: i. e., if any of you have a wife whose companionship he dislikes, or a house in which he dislikes dwelling, or a horse that he dislikes taking for the purpose of keeping post on the enemies' frontier, let him separate himself therefrom, by divorcing the wife, and removing from the house, and selling the horse: or, as some say, the شؤم of the wife is her not producing children; and that of the house, its straitness, and the badness of its neighbour; and that of the horse, one's not going to war upon it. (JM.) b2: See also مَشْؤُومٌ.

A2: Also Black camels: and حِضَارٌ signifies “ white ” camels, (K, TA,) and is also written and pronounced حَضَارٌ: (TA:) neither of these has a sing.: (K:) both occur in a verse of Aboo-Dhu-eyb: but accord. to one reading thereof it is شِيم; pl. of أَشْيَمُ: so says AA: and IJ says that شُومٌ, [without ء,] being originally شُيْمٌ, of the measure فُعْلٌ, may also be pl. of أَشْيَمُ. (TA.) شَــأْمَةٌ and ↓ مَشْــأَمَةٌ The left, meaning the left side or direction or relative location or place; (S, K;) i. q. [يَسْرَةٌ and] مَيْسَرَةٌ; (S;) contr. of يَمْنَةٌ and مَيْمَنَةٌ. (K.) One says of a man, قَعَدَ شــأْمَةٌ [He sat on the left]. (S.) And one says, خُذْ بِهِمْ شَــأْمَةً i. e. [Take thou with them] the direction of the left hand. (S.) And نَظَرْتُ يَمْنَةً

وَشَــأْمَةً [I looked in a right direction and in a left direction]. (TA.) And hence ↓ أَصْحَابُ المَشْــأَمَةِ, in the Kur [lvi. 9 and xc. 19], (TA,) meaning [The occupants of the left: or] those who shall have their records given to them in their left hands: or the occupants of the low, or ignoble, place, or station: or the havers of unfortunateness (الشُّؤْم): and أَصْحَابُ المَيْمَنَةِ is expl. as having the contr. senses. (Ksh and Bd in lvi. 9.) A2: Also, the former, A mole (خَالٌ) upon the person: thus, with ء, as mentioned by IAth: also mentioned without ء in art. شيم. (TA.) b2: See also شَامَةٌ as meaning “ a black she-camel,”

شِئْمَةٌ Nature; natural, native, or innate, disposition, temper, or other quality or property: (K, TA:) mentioned thus, as with ء, by Az and Lh, and said by IJ to be sometimes thus pronounced; but the pronunciation thereof with ء is held by ISd to be extraordinary. (TA.) [See art. شيم.]

شَامِىٌّ, (S, Msb, K, TA,) without ء, (TA,) and ↓ شَآم ٍ, (S, Msb, K,) of the measure فَعَال ٍ, (S,) an allowable form, without ى, (Msb,) like تَهَام ٍ and يَمَان ٍ, (TA,) and ↓ شَآمِىٌّ, (Sb, S, K,) [Syrian;] of, or relating to, الشَّأْم: (S, Msb, K:) one should not say شَأْم ٍ; any instance [of this] occurring by poetic license being accounted for as a case of the use of the name of the country for the rel. n.: (S:) the fem., applied to a woman, is شَامِيَّةٌ and ↓ شَآمِيَةٌ, the latter without teshdeed: (S, TA;) the pl. of شَامِىٌّ is شُوَامٌ, like غُرَابٌ [in measure]. (TA.) b2: [And hence, Northern.]

شَآم ٍ, and شَآمِيَةٌ the fem. of the former; and شَآمِىٌّ: see the next preceding paragraph.

شَائِمٌ: see مَشْؤُومٌ.

أَشْأَمُ [More, and most, unlucky, inauspicious, unfortunate, or unprosperous]. The Arabs say, أَشْأَمُ كُلِّ امْرِئ ٍ بَيْنَ لَحْيَيْهِ, (Meyd, TA,) as some relate it, or, as others relate it, فَكَّيْهِ, which means the same, (Meyd,) [app. meaning accord. to the TA, The most unlucky thing of every man is between his two jaws, or the two lateral portions of his lower jaw; but it is said that] أَشْأَمُ is here used in the sense of شُؤْمٌ [i. e. the unluckiness, &c.]; and in a similar manner [the contr.] أَيْمَنُ is used [in the sense of يُمْن]: so says AHeyth: (Meyd:) the prov. meaning the tongue. (AHeyth, TA.) The fem. is شُؤْمَى. (TA.) b2: Hence, (TA,) اليَدُ الشُّؤْمَى The left hand or arm; contr. of اليُمْنَى; (K, TA;) i. q. الشِّمَالُ. (TA.) It is said in a trad., respecting camels, لَا يَأْتِى خَيْرُهَا إِلَّا مِنْ جَانِبِهَا الأَشْأَمِ [Their goodness comes not save from their left side]: i. e. they are milked and mounted only from the left side. (TA.) b3: See also مَشْؤُومٌ, in three places. b4: Zuheyr, in the following saying, فَتُنْتَجْ لَكُمْ غِلْمَانَ أَشْأَمَ كُلُّهُمْ كَأَحْمَرِ عَاد ٍ ثُمَّ تُرْضِعْ فَتَفْطِمْ uses it in the sense of the inf. n. شُؤْم; (S;) meaning غِلْمَانَ شُؤْم ٍ: (S, and EM p. 124:) he says, And it, i. e. war, will bring forth for you boys of ill luck, or evil omen; all of them like Ahmar of' Ád: then it will suckle these boys, and wean them: by Ahmar of ' Ád, he means Ahmar of Thamood, for Ahmar was the surname of him who hamstrung the she-camel of Sálih, and his name was Kudár: he says thus for the sake of the measure: or, as some say, Thamood were called 'Ád-el-Ákhireh. (EM.) مَشْــأَمَةٌ: see شُؤْمٌ, in two places: b2: and see also شَــأْمَةٌ, likewise in two places.

مَشْؤُومٌ, (S, MA, K, KL,) and مَشُومٌ, (S, K,) the latter like مَقُولٌ, (TA,) [a contraction of the former,] Unlucky, or inauspicious, (S, MA, K, KL,) عَى قَوْمِهِ [to his people, or party], (S, MA, K,) and عَلَى نَفْسِهِ [to himself]: (Ksh and Bd in lvi. 9:) [and so ↓ شُؤْمٌ; (as in an ex. in the first sentence of this art.;) this being an epithet as well as a subst., like its syn. نَحْسٌ; syn. with مَشْؤُومٌ, like as نَحْسٌ is syn. with مَنْحُوسٌ; and app., like نَحْسٌ, used alike as sing. and pl., for it seems to be originally an inf. n.:] and so ↓ شَائِمٌ; (K;) or this signifies drawing ill luck, or evil fortune, upon his people [and upon himself]: (S, TA:) and أَشَائِمُ, a pl., likewise signifies unlucky, or inauspicious; (KL;) contr. of أَيَامِنُ; (S, K, TA;) these being pls. of ↓ أَشْأَمُ and أَيْمَنُ: (TA:) the pl. of مَشْؤُومٌ is مَشَائِيمُ, (S, KL, TA,) which is extr., for by rule it should be مَشْؤُومُونَ. (TA.) One says also ↓ طَائِرٌ أَشْأَمُ meaning [An omen] happening, or occurring, (جَار ٍ,) with unluckiness, or inauspiciousness; [i. e. an unlucky, or inauspicious, omen;] (K, TA;) and [in like manner] ↓ طَيْرٌ أَشْأَمُ: and the pl. is أَشَائِمُ [as above]. (TA.)

أم1 لَؤُمَ He was base, base-born, low, ignoble, ungenerous, mean, sordid; (S:) contr. of كَرُمَ. (K.) See لَئِيمٌ. b2: لَأَمَ: see also ظَاهَرَ.3 لَآءَمْتُ بَيْنَ القَوْمِ, inf. n. مُلَآءَمَةٌ, I reconciled the people, (S, Msb,) and brought them together. (M, K, TA.) b2: تآءم, (S,) or تآءم ثَوْبًا, (M, K, TA, [in the TT, again, written تَأَمَ,]) inf. n. as above, (S, TA,) (assumed tropical:) He wove a piece of cloth of threads two and two together (S, M, K) in its warp and its woof. (TA.) تَوْءَمٌ A twin; one of two young, (S, M, Mgh, Msb, K,) and of more, (M, K,) brought forth at one birth, (S, M, Mgh, Msb, K,) of any animals; whether a male or a female, or a male [brought forth] with a female; (M, K;) and تَوْءَمَةٌ is [also] applied to a female: (S, M, Mgh, Msb, K:) it occurs in poetry contracted into تَوَمٌ: (M:) the pl. is تَوَائِمُ and تُؤَامٌ, (S, M, Msb, K,) the latter of which is of a rare form, not without parallels, (M,) said by some to be a quasi-pl. n., and by some to be originally [تِئَامٌ,] with kesr, but the assertion of these last is condemned by AHei; (MF;) and تَوْءَمُونَ is allowable as applied to human beings: (S, TA:) you say, هُوَ تَوْءَمُهُ [in the TA, erroneously, تُؤْمُهُ, with damm,] and ↓ تِئْمُهُ and ↓ تَئِيمُهُ [in the CK تَيْئمُهُ] (Az, M, K) [meaning He is his twin-brother]: and هُمَا تَوْءَمَانِ (S, * M, Mgh, Msb * K) and تَوْءَمٌ (M, K) [They two are twin-brothers]: or تَوْءَمٌ applies only to one of the two; (Msb;) it is a mistake to say هُمَا تَوْءَمٌ and هُمَا زَوْجٌ: (Mgh:) [but see زَوْجٌ:] Lth says that تَوْءَمٌ applies to two sons, or young ones, [born] together; and that one should not say هُمَا تَوْءَمَانِ, but هُمَا تَوْءَمٌ: this, however, is a mistake: correctly, as ISk and Fr say, تَوْءَمٌ applies to one, and تَوْءَمَانِ to two. (T, TA.) It is of the measure فَوْعَلٌ, (Kh, S, IB, Msb,) in the opinion of some, (IB,) and originally وَوْءَمٌ, (Kh, T, S, IB,) like as تَوْلَجٌ is originally وَوْلَجٌ; (Kh, T, S;) from الوِئَامُ, (T, IB,) “ the being mutually near,” (T,) “ mutually agreeing,” (T, IB,) “ being mutually conformable; ” (IB;) so that it means one that agrees with, or matches, another, (IB.) b2: It is metaphorically used in relation to all things resembling one another [so that it means (tropical:) One of a pair]. (M.) A poet says, قَالَتْ لَنَا وَدَمْعُهَا تُؤَامُ كَالدُّرِّ إِذْ أَسْلَمَهُ النِّظَامُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ ارْتَحَلُوا السَّلَامُ (assumed tropical:) [She said to us, while her tears fell in pairs, or in close succession, like large pearls when the string lets them drop off, Upon those who have departed be peace]. (S.) [This citation, and what immediately follows it in the S, mentioning the pl. تَوْءَمُونَ, not تُؤَامُونَ, have been misunderstood by Golius; and Freytag has followed him in this case.] b3: التَّوْءَمُ is also [a name of] (assumed tropical:) A certain Mansion [of the Moon; namely, the Sixth; more commonly called الهَنْعَةُ;] pertaining to الجَوْزَآء

(Kzw.) b4: [The pl.] تَوَائِمُ also signifies (assumed tropical:) Clusters, or what are clustered together, (مَا تَشَابَكَ,) of stars, and of pearls. (AHn, TA.) b7: التَّوْءَمُ also signifies (assumed tropical:) The arrow of the kind used in the game called المَيْسِر: (M:) or a certain arrow of those used in that game: (K:) or the second of those arrows; (S, M, K;) said by Lh to have two notches, and to entitle to two portions [of the slaughtered camel] if successful, and to subject to the payment for two portions if unsuccessful. (M.) b8: And تَوْءَمَاتٌ, (assumed tropical:) A kind of women's vehicles [borne by camels], (T, K,) like the مَشَاجِر, (T, TA,) erroneously said in the copies of the K to be like the مَشَاجِب, (TA,) having no coverings, or canopies: the sing. is تَوْءَمَةٌ. مُتْئِمٌ Twinning, or bringing forth two at one birth; (S, M, Msb, K;) applied to a mother, (K,) or a woman, (S, M, Msb,) and to any pregnant animal; (M;) without ة. (Msb.) مِتْآمٌ Accustomed to twin, or bring forth two at one birth; (S, M, K;) applied to a mother, (K,) or a woman, (S, M,) and to any pregnant animal: (M:) pl. مَتَائِيمُ. (Har p. 613.) b2: Hence, (Har ubi suprà,) ثَوْبٌ مِتْآمٌ, (S, Har,) or ↓ مُتَآءَمٌ, (TA, PS,) [both app. correct,] (assumed tropical:) A piece of cloth woven of threads two and two together in its warp and its woof. 1 خَارَ, aor. ـِ (K,) inf. n. خَيْرٌ, (TA,) He (a man, TA) was, or became, possessed of خَيْر [or good, &c.]. (K, TA.) b2: [He was, or be came, good: and he did good: contr. of شَرَّ.] You say, خِرْتَ يَا رَجُلُ [Thou hast been good; or thou hast done good, or well; O man]. (S.) And خَارَاللّٰهُ لَكَ فِى هٰذَا الأَمْرِ [May God do good to thee, bless thee, prosper thee, or favour thee, in this affair: or] may God cause thee to have, or appoint to thee, good in this affair: (K:) or may God choose for thee the better thing [in this affair]. (IAth.) 3 خَاْيَرَ ↓ خَايَرَهُ فَخَارَهُ, (A, K,) inf. n. مُخَايَرَةٌ, (A,) He vied with him, or strove to surpass him, or contended with him for superiority, in goodness, or excellence, (A, K,) in, or with respect to, (فِى,) a thing, (A,) and he surpassed him therein. (A, K.) 4 مَا أَخْيَرَ فُلَانًا, (A,) and ↓ مَا خَيْرَهُ, which latter is extr. [with respect to form, though more commonly used than the former], (TA,) [How good is such a one!] phrases similar to مَاأَشَّرَهُ and مَا شَّرَهُ [which have the contr. meaning]. (TA.) اللَّبَنَ لِلْمَرِيضِ ↓ مَا خَيْرَ [How good is milk for the diseased!], (K, * TA,) with nasb to the ر and ن, is an expression of wonder: (K:) it was said to Khalaf El-Ahmar, by an Arab of the desert, in the presence of Aboo-Zeyd; whereupon Khalaf said to him, “What a good word, if thou hadst not defiled it by mentioning it to the [common] people! ” and Aboo-Zeyd returned to his companions, and desired them, when Khalaf ElAhmar should come, to say, all together, these words (ما خير اللبن للمريض), [in order to vex him], and they did so. (TA.) 5 تخيّر, as an intrans. v.: see 2.

A2: As a trans. v.: see 8.6 تخايروا فِيهِ إِلَى حَكَمٍ They contended together for superior goodness, or for excellence, in it, or with respect to it, appealing to a judge, or an arbiter. (A.) 8 اختارهُ; and ↓ تخيّرهُ, (S, * A, Mgh, Msb, K,) inf. n. [or rather quasi-inf. n.] ↓ خِيَرَةٌ, said by IAth to be the only instance of the kind except طِيَرَةٌ; (TA voce تَطَيَّرَ;) and ↓ استخارهُ; (A;) and ↓ خَارَهُ; (K;) He chose, made choice of. selected, elected, or preferred, him, or it. (S, Msb, * K.) You say also, اِخْتَرْتُهُ الرِّجَالَ, and مِنَ الرِّجَالِ, [I chose him from the men,] and عَلَيْهِمْ, (K,) which last signifies in preference to them. (TA.) It is said in the Kur [vii. 154], وَاخْتَارَ مُوسَى قَوْمِهِ سَبْعِينَ رَجُلًا [And Moses chose from his people seventy men]. (TA.) وَلَقَدِ اخْتَرْنَاهُمْ عَلَى عِلْمٍ, in the Kur [xliv. 31, Verily we have chosen them with knowledge], may be indicative of God's producing good, or of his preferring them before others. (TA.) 10 استخار He sought, desired, or asked for, خِيرَة (S, Msb, K) or خِيَرَة (as in some copies of the K) [i. e. the blessing, prospering, or favour, of God; &c.]. [And it is trans.; for] one says, اِسْتَخِرِ اللّٰهَ يَخِرْ لَكَ [Desire thou, or ask thou for, the blessing, prospering, or favour, of God; &c.; and He will bless, prosper, or favour, thee; &c.]. (S.) And اِسْتَخَرْتُ اللّٰهَ فِيهِ فَخَارَ لِى I desired, or asked, of God, the better of the two things, [or rather the better in it, meaning a case, or an affair,] and He chose it for me. خَيْرٌ [Good, moral or physical; anything that is good, real or ideal, and actual or potential; and, being originally an inf. n., used as sing and pl.;] a thing that all desire; such as intelligence, for instance, and equity; (Er-Rághib, and so in some copies of the K;) [or goodness;] and excellence; and what is profitable or useful; benefit; (Er-Rághib;) contr. of شَرٌّ: (S, A, Msb:) pl. خُيُورٌ, (Msb, K,) and also, accord. to the Msb, ↓ خِيَارٌ: (TA:) [but this latter seems to be properly pl. only of خَيْرٌ used as an epithet (see below) and as a noun denoting the comparative and superlative degrees: it may however be used as an epithet in which the quality of a subst. is predominant:] خير is of two kinds: namely, absolute خير, which is what is desired in all circumstances and by every person: and what is خير [or good] to one and شرّ [or evil] to another; as, for instance, (Er-Rághib,) wealth, or property: (Zj, L in art. شد, Er-Rághib, K:) it has this last signification, namely wealth, or property, in the Kur, ii. 176 (S, TA) and ii. 274 and xxiv. 33 and xli. 49: or in the first and second of these instances it is thus called to imply the meaning of wealth, or property, that has been collected in a praiseworthy manner, or it means much wealth or property; and this is its meaning in the first of the instances mentioned above, agreeably with a trad. of 'Alee; and also in the Kur, c. 8: (TA:) [being used as a pl. (as well as a sing.), it may be also rendered good things:] and it is also used by the Arabs to signify horses; (K, * TA;) and has this meaning in the Kur, xxxviii. 31: (TA:) [it is often best rendered good fortune; prosperity; welfare; wellbeing; weal; happiness; or a good state or condition: and sometimes bounty, or beneficence.] رَجُلٌ قَلِيلُ الخَيْرِ means [A man possessing little, or no, good; possessing few, or no, good things; or poor: and in whom is little, or no, good or goodness; or niggardly: and also] a man who does little good: (TA in art. عص:) or [who does no good;] who is not near to doing good; denoting the nonexistence of good in him. (Msb in art. قل.) [Thus it sometimes means the same as رَجُلٌ لَا خَيْرَ فِيهِ A man in whom is no good or goodness; devoid of goodness; worthless.] And قِلَّةُ خَيْرٍ means Poverty: and also niggardliness. (A and TA in art. جحد.) هُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الخَيْرِ وَالخِيرِ is explained voce خِيرٌ.

عَلَىيَدَىِ الخَيْرِ وَاليُمْنِ [May it be with the aid of good fortune and prosperity] is a prayer used with respect to a marriage. (A 'Obeyd, TA.) And إِنَّكَ مَا وَخَيْرًا means مَعَ خَيْرٍ, i. e., Mayest thou meet with, or attain, good. (K.) b2: خَيْرٌ in the phrase فُلَانٌ خَيْرٌ resembles an epithet [like ↓ خَيِّرٌ, and signifies Good; or possessing good]; (Akh, S;) therefore the fem. is خَيْرَةٌ, of which the pl. is خَيْرَاتٌ, (Akh, S, Msb, *) as occurring in the Kur, lv. 70; and they do not [there] mean by it [the comparative or superlative signification of the measure] أَفْعَلُ: (Akh, S:) you say ↓ رَجُلٌ خَيِّرٌ, (S, A, Msb,) meaning [A good man; or] a man possessing خَيْر [or good]; (Msb;) and رَجُلٌ خَيْرٌ: (S:) and in like manner, ↓ اِمْرَأَةٌ خَيِّرَةٌ and خَيْرَةٌ, (S, Msb,) meaning [A good woman; or] a woman excellent in beauty and disposition: (Msb:) or خَيْرٌ and ↓ خَيِّرٌ signify possessing much خَيْر [or good], (K,) applied to a man; (TA;) and in the same sense you say ↓ رَجُلٌ خَيْرَى, and ↓ خُورَى, and ↓ خِيَرى: and the fem. of the first is خَيْرَةٌ; and of the second, ↓ خَيِّرَةٌ: (K:) and the pl. [of pauc.] (of the first, TA) is أَخْيَارٌ, and [of mult.] خِيَارٌ: (A, Msb, K:) you say also خِيَارُ المَالِ, meaning The excellent of the camels or the like: (Msb, K:) and in like manner you say of men &c.: (TA:) [see also below:] and the fem. is خَيْرَةٌ, of which the pl. is خَيْرَاتٌ: (Msb:) خِيَارٌ is contr. of أَشْرَارٌ, (S, Mgh,) [thus] used as an epithet: (Mgh:) and ↓ خَيْرَةٌ [used as a subst.] signifies anything excellent; and the pl. thereof in this sense, خَيْرَاتٌ, occurs in the Kur, ix. 89: (S:) or خَيْرٌ, (K,) or the fem. خَيْرَةٌ, (Lth,) or each, (K.) signifies excellent in beauty: (Lth, K:) and ↓ خَيِّرٌ and خَيِّرَةٌ signify excellent in righteousness (Lth, K) and religion: (K:) or there is no difference in the opinion of the lexicologists [in general] between خَيْرَةٌ and ↓ خَيِّرَةٌ: (Az:) accord. to Zj, خَيْرَاتٌ and ↓ خَيِّرَاتٌ, both occurring in different readings of the Kur, lv. 70, signify good in dispositions: accord. to Khálid Ibn-Jembeh, خَيْرَةٌ, applied to a woman, signifies generous in race, exalted in rank or quality or reputation, goodly in face, good in disposition, possessing much wealth, who, if she bring forth, brings forth a generous child: (TA:) [↓ خِيَارٌ is also applied as an epithet to a sing. subst., either masc. or fem.:] you say جَمَلٌ خِيَارٌ and نَاقَةٌ خِيَارٌ, meaning A he-camel [that is excellent or] excellent and brisk and so a she-camel. (TA.) See also مُخْتَارٌ, in three places. In the saying لَعَمَرُ أَبِيكَ الخَيْرُ, the word خَيْر is in the nom. case as an epithet of عَمْر; [so that the phrase lit. means By the good life of thy father;] but properly it should be لَعَمْرُ أَبِيكَ الخَيْرِ [By the life of thy good father]: and the like is said with شَرّ. (TA.) [See also art. عمر.]

b3: خَيْرٌ is also used to denote superiority: one says, هٰذَا خَيْرٌ مِنْ هٰذَا This is better than this: and in the dial. of the Benoo-'Ámir, ↓ هٰذَا أَخْيَرُ مِنْ هٰذَا, with أ, and in like manner, أَشَّرُ; but the rest of the Arabs drop the أ in each case: (Msb:) you say, مِنْكَ ↓ هُوَ أَخْيَرُ [He is better than thou], and in like manner, أَشَّرُ مِنْكَ; and هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ, and in like manner, شَرٌّ مِنْكَ; and, [using the dim. form of خَيْرٌ,] مِنْكَ ↓ خُيَيْرٌ, and in like manner, شُرَيْرٌ مِنْكَ. (Ibn-Buzurj, TA.) Youalso say, when you mean to express the signification of superiority, فُلَانَةٌ خَيْرُ النَّاسِ [Such a woman is the best of mankind]; but not خَيْرَةُ: [see, however, what will be found cited hereafter from the K,] and فُلَانٌ خَيْرُ النَّاسِ [Such a man is the best of mankind]; but not ↓ أَخْيَرُ [unless in the dial. of the Benoo-'Ámir]: and [it is said that] خَيْرُ when thus used does not assume the dual form nor the pl., because it has the signification of [the measure] أَفْعَلُ: for though a poet uses the dual form, he uses it as a contraction of the dual of خَيِّرٌ, like مَيْتٌ and مَيِّتٌ, and هَيْنٌ and هَيِّنٌ: (S:) [but. this remark in the S is incorrect: for both خَيْر and ↓ أَخْيَر, when used in such phrases as those to which J here refers, have pl. forms of frequent occurrence, and of which examples will be found below; and, as is said by I 'Ak (p. 239), and by many other grammarians, you may say, الزَّيْدَانِ أَفْضَلَا القَوْمِ, and الزَّيْدُونَ أَفْضَلُو القَوْمِ and أَفَاضِلُ القَوْمِ, and also هِنْدُ فُضْلَىالنِّسَآءِ, &c.; and such concordance is found in the Kur, vi. 123; and is even said by many to be more chaste than the mode prescribed by J:] it is said in the K, that you say, ↓ هُوَ أَخْيَرُ مِنْكَ, like خَيْرُ; and when you mean the signification of superiority, you say فُلَانٌ خَيْرَةٌ النَّاسِ, with ة, and فُلَانَةُ خَيْرُهُمْ, without ة: but [SM says,] I know not how this is; for in the S is said what is different from this, and in like manner by Z in several places in the Ksh; and what is most strange is, that the author of the K quotes in the B the passage of J [from the S], and adopts the opinion of the leading authorities [as given in the S]: (TA:) or you say, فُلَانَةُ الخَيْرَةُ مِنَ المَرْأَتَيْنِ [Such a woman is the better of the two women]: and هِىَ الخَيْرَةُ, and ↓ الخِيرَةُ, [so in the TA, but in the CK الخِيَرَةُ,] and ↓ الخِيرَى, and ↓ الخُورَى, [the last being fem. of أَخْيَرُ, originally خُيْرَى, and so, app., the last but one, She is the better, or best:] (K:) and [using the dim. form of خَيْرٌ] you say, أَهْلِهِ ↓ هُوَ خُيَيْرُ [He is the best of his family]: (Ibn-Buzurj, TA:) one says also, to one coming from a journey, خَيْرَ مَا رُدَّ فِى أَهْلٍ

وَمَالٍ, meaning May God make that with which thou comest [back] to be the best of what is brought back by the absent with family and property; (As, Meyd, TA;) or, as some relate it, خَيْرُ, i. e. رَدُّكَ خَيْرُ رَدٍّ [may thy bringing back be the best bringing back]; and فى is used in the sense of مَعَ: (Meyd:) [أَخْيَارٌ is pl. of pauc., and خِيَارٌ pl. of mult., and so app. is خِيرَانٌ, of خَيْرٌ thus used; and ↓ أَخَايِرُ is pl. of أَخْيَرُ, and so is أَخْيَرُونَ applied to rational beings: in the TA, أَخَايِرُ is said to be a pl. pl. of أَخْيَرُ, and so خِيرَانٌ; but this is app. a mistake, probably of transcription:] you say رَجُلٌ مِنْ خِيَارِ النَّاسِ and أَخْيَارِهِمْ and ↓ أَخَايِرِهِمْ [A man of the best of mankind]: (A, TA:) and لَكَ خِيَارُ هٰذِهِ الإِبِلِ, and ↓ خِيرَتُهَا, [Thine are, or is, or shall be, the best of these camels,] alike with respect to a sing. and a pl.: (TA:) and إِبِلِهِ ↓ نَحَرَ خِيرَةَ and إِبِلِهِ ↓ خُورَةَ [He slaughtered the best of his camels]: (IAar, TA:) and ↓ هُمُ الأَخْيَرُونَ [They (meaning men) are the better, or best]. A3: خَيْرُ بَوَّآءُ [from the Persian خِيرْبُوَا Lesser cardamom;] a kind of small grain, resembling the قَاقُلَّة [or common cardamom], (K,) of sweet odour. (TA.) خِيرٌ Generousness; generosity; (S, A, Msb, K;) liberality; munificence. (Msb.) You say, فُلَانٌ ذُو خِيرٍ Such a one is a possessor of generousness, or generosity, &c. (Msb.) And هُوَ مِنْ وَالخِيرِ ↓ أَهْلِ الخَيْرِ [He is of the people of good, or of wealth, &c., and of generosity]. (A.) b2: Eminence; elevated state or condition; nobility. (IAar, K.) b3: Origin. (Lh, K.) b4: Nature, or disposition. (A, K.) You say, هُوَ كَرِيمُ الخِيرِ He is generous in nature, or disposition. خَيْرَةٌ fem. of خَيْرٌ [q. v.] used as an epithet: pl. خَيْرَاتٌ. (Akh, S, Msb.) b2: [Also, used as a subst., or as an epithet in which the quality of a subst. is predominant, A good thing, of any kind: a good quality; an excellency: and a good act or action: &c.: pl. as above:] see خَيْرٌ, in the former half of the paragraph.

(A.) خِيَرَةٌ and ↓ خِيرَةٌ (of which the former is the better known, TA) are substs. from اِخْتَارَهُ, (K,) or from اِخْتَارَهُ اللّٰهُ, (S,) both signifying A thing, man, or beast, and things, &c, that one chooses: (TA:) or [a thing, &c.,] chosen, selected, or elected: (Mgh:) as in the saying, مُحَمَّدُ خِيَرَةُ اللّٰهِ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ and ↓ خِيرَتُهُ [Mohammad is the chosen, or elect, of God, from his creatures]: (S, Mgh: *) or ↓ خِيرَةٌ is a subst. from الاِخْتِيَارٌ, like فِدْيَةٌ from الاِفْتِدَآءُ; and خِيَرَةٌ is syn. with خِيَارٌ and اِخْتِيَارٌ; or is from تَخَيَّرْتُ الشَّىْءَ: or, as some say, خِيرَةٌ and خِيَرَةٌ are syn.: (Msb:) see 8; and see also خِيَارٌ: and ↓ هٰذِهِ خِيرَتِى (Msb, TA) or خِيَرَتِى (TA) means This is what I choose; (Msb, (TA;) and so هٰذَا خيرتى: and هٰؤُلَآءِ خيرتى

خَيْرِىٌّ Of, or relating to, خَيْر, or good, &c.]

خِيرِىٌّ Of, or relating to, or possessing, generousness, generosity, liberality, or munificence. (Msb.) A2: And hence, (Msb,) or [thus applied] it is an arabicized word, (S,) [from the Persian خِيرِىْ,] The مَنْثُور [or gilliflower:] but generally applied to the yellow species thereof; [so in the present day;] for it is this from which is extracted its oil, which is an ingredient in medicines. (Msb.) [Accord. to Golius, “Viola alba, ejusque genera: Diosc. iii. 138: ” and he adds, as on the authority of Ibn-Beytár, “spec. luteum. ”]

b2: And خِيرِىُّ البَرِّ The خُزَامَى [q. v.]; because it is the most pungent in odour of the plants of the desert. (Msb.) خَيْرِيَّةٌ The quality of خَيْرٌ; i. e. goodness.]

خِيَارٌ a subst. from الاِخْتِيَارُ; (S, Mgh, K;) meaning Choice, or option; (Msb;) and so ↓ خِيَرَةٌ in the Kur [xxviii. 68], مَاكَانَ لَهُمُ الخِيَرَةُ They have not choice, or option; (Mgh;) or the meaning of these words is, it is not for them to choose in preference to God; (Fr, Zj;) and so, accord. to Lth, ↓ خِيرَةٌ, as being an inf. n. [or rather a quasi-inf. n., though this seems doubtful,] of اختار. (TA.) You say, إِنَّ فِى الشَّرِّ خِيَارًا [Verily in evil there is a choice, or an option]; i. e. what may be chosen: a prov. (TA.) And أَنْتَ بِالخِيَارٍ and ↓ بِالْمُخْتَارِ [in some copies of the K بالمخيار, which, as is said in the TA, is a mistranscription, Thou hast the choice, or option]; i. e. choose thou what thou wilt. (K.) And البَيْعُ صَفْقَةٌ أَوْ خِيَارٌ Selling is decisive or with the option of returning. (Mgh in art. صفق.) Hence, خِيَارُ الرُّؤْيَةِ The choice of returning [on seeing it] a thing which one has purchased without seeing it. (Mgh, * Msb, * KT.) And خِيَارُ المَجْلِسِ [The choice of returning a thing purchased while sitting with the seller]. (TA.) And خِيَارُ العَيْبِ [and النَّقِيصَةِ] The choice of returning a thing to the seller when it has a fault, a defect, or an imperfection. (KT.) And خِيَارُ الشَّرْطِ The choice of returning a thing purchased when one of the two contracting parties has made it a condition that he may do so within three days or less. (KT.) And خِيَارُ التَّعْيِينِ The choice of specifying [ for instance] one of two garments, or pieces of cloth, which one has purchased for ten pieces [of money, or some other sum,] on the condition of so doing. (S.) b2: خِيَارُ شَنْبَرَ [The cassia fistula of Linn.;] a well-known kind of tree; (K;) a species of the خَرُّوب, resembling a large peach-tree; (TA;) abounding in Alexandria and Misr; (K;) and having an admirable yellow flower: (TA:) the latter division [or rather the whole] of the name is arabicized [from the Persian خِيَارْ چَنْبَرْ]. (TA.) خُيَيْرٌ: see خَيْرٌ, [of which it is the dim.,] in two places, in the latter half of the paragraph.

خَيِّرٌ, and its fem. خَيِّرَةٌ, and pl. fem. خَيِّرَاتٌ: see خَيْرٌ, (used as an epithet,) in eight places, in the former half of the paragraph.

خَائِرٌ [Doing good, or well: &c.:] act. part. n. of خَارَ. (S, TA.) أَخْيَرُ, and its pls. أَخَايِرُ and أَحْيَرُونَ: see خَيْرٌ, in eight places, in the latter half of the paragraph.

اِخْتِيَارِىٌّ [Of, or relating to, the will, or choice].

صِفَةٌ اخْتِيَارِيَّةٌ [meaning A quality which originates from, or depends upon, the will, or choice, i. e. an acquired quality,] is opposed to خِلْقِيَّةٌ. (Msb in art. مدح, &c.) مَخْيَرَةٌ [A cause of good: and hence,] excel-lence, and eminence, or nobility: so in the phrase, فُلَانٌ ذُو مَخْيَرَةٍ [Such a one is a possessor of eminence, &c.]. (A, TA.) مُخَيِّرٌ: see what follows.

مُخْتَارٌ act. part. n. [of 8, signifying Choosing, selecting, or electing]. (TA.) b2: And pass. part. n. [of the same, signifying Chosen, selected, elected, or preferred: and choice, select, or elect; as also ↓ خِيَارٌ, which signifies like wise the best of anything; often used in this sense, as a sing. and as a pl.; and excellent, or excellent and brisk, applied to a he-camel and to a she-camel; as mentioned above, voce خَيْرٌ]. 1 أَمِهَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. أَمَهٌ, He forgot. (S, K.) Hence the reading of I'Ab, [in the Kur xii. 45,] وَادَّكَرَ بَعْدَ أَمَهٍ [And he remembered, or became reminded, after forgetting]. (S.) AHeyth is said to have read بَعْدَ أَمْهٍ; and accord. to AO, أَمْهٌ signifies نِسْيَانٌ [like أَمَهٌ]; but this is not correct. (Az, TA.) b2: He confessed, or acknowledged: (S, K:) occurring in this sense in a trad. of Ez-Zuhree; but not well known. (S.) The reading of I'Ab, mentioned above, بَعْدَ أَمَهٍ, is explained by A'Obeyd as meaning after confessing, or acknowledging. (TA.) 5 تأمّه أُمَّا He adopted a mother; (M, K;) as also تَأَمَّمَهَا. أَمَةٌ, originally اموة, (Msb,) [but whether أَمَوَةٌ or أَمْوَةٌ is disputed, as will be seen in what follows,] A female slave; (M, K;) a woman whose condition is that of slavery; (T;) contr. of حُرَّةٌ: (S:) [in relation to God, best rendered a handmaid:] dual أَمَتَانِ: (Msb:) pl. آمٍ, (Lth, T, S, M, Msb, K, &c.,) like قِاضٍ, (Msb,) a pl. of pauc. 1 قَامَ He stood still (Ksh and Bd in ii. 19) in his place. (Ksh.) b2: قَامَتِ الدَّابَّةُ The beast stopped (S, K, TA) from journeying, (TA,) from fatigue, or being jaded; (S, TA;) i. q. انقطعت. (A.) And قَامَتْ عَلَيْهِ الدَّابَّةُ His beast, being jaded, stopped with him, and moved not from its place. (Mgh.) b3: قَامَ He, or it, stood up, or erect; syn. اِنْتَصَبَ. أَثْبَتَهَا; (TA in art. ثبت;) and so, app., بِحُجَّتِهِ; the ب being redundant, as in an ex. voce خُطَّةٌ; but this is the only ex. that I know, and it is without explanation: Golius mentions the phrase أَقَامَ بِى عَلَيْكُمْ; but without indicating his authority. b19: أَقَامَ عَلَى حَالٍ He abode, or continued, in a state, or condition; and اقام على أَمْرٍ the same; and he abode, continued, stayed, or waited, intent upon, or occupied in, an affair, a business, or a concern; he kept to it.5 تَقَوَّمَ It subsisted: see رُكْنٌ. b2: تَقَوَّمَ It had a price; was valued. b3: See 2.6 تَقَاوَمُوهُ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُمْ They valued it, or estimated its price, among them. (TA.) 10 اِسْتَقَامَ It became right; direct; in a right state; straight: even: tended towards the right, or desired, point, or object; had a right direction, or tendency; was regular. b2: اِسْتَقَامَ عَلَى طَرِيقِ الحَقِّ (K, art. رشد) He continued in the way of truth, or the right way; as also أَقَامَ ↓ عَلَيْهِ b4: لَمْ يَسْتَقِمِ الأَمْرُ The affair was, or became, difficult: see تَعَذَّرَ. b5: استقام لَهُ الأَمْرُ The affair, or case, became in a right state for him; syn. اِعْتَدَلَ. (S.) b6: اِسْتَقَامَ He, or it, was, or became, right, direct, rightly directed, undeviating, straight, or even: and he, or it, stood right, or straight, or erect. (MA, KL.) He went right on, straight on, or undeviatingly: (see زَعَبَ:) whence اِسْتَقَامَ عَلَى الطَّرِيقَةِ he went on undeviatingly in the way. (See Kur lxxii. 16.) He went right; pursued a right course; acted rightly, or justly. See also سَدَّ, with which it is syn. It (an affair) was direct in its tendency, or had a right tendency. It (discourse, &c.) had a right tenour. b7: See 2.

قَوْمٌ [A people, or body of persons composing a community: and people, or persons:] a company, or body, [or party, (see what follows,)] of men, [properly] without women: (S, Msb, K, &c.:) or of men and women together; (K;) for the قوم of every man is his party, and his kinsfolk, or tribe: (TA:) or (K) sometimes including women, as followers; (S, Msb, K;) for the قوم of every prophet is of men and women. (S, Msb.) b2: قَوْمٌ opposed to نِسَآءٌ: see a verse cited voce سَوْفَ.

قَامَةٌ The stature of a man; his height in a standing posture; it is a span (شِبْر) shorter than a باع: (JK:) tallness, height; and beauty, or justness, of stature. (K.) b2: قَامَةٌ A structure [or post] like the figure of a man, raised at the side of a well, whereon is placed the wood to which the pulley is attached: pl. قَامٌ: (JK:) also called ↓ قَائِمَةٌ: see K, voce عَمُود: or قَامَةُ البَكْرَةٌ signifies the sheave (بَكْرَة) with its apparatus. (S, K.) دِينٌ قِيَمٌ A right religion. (Kur, vi. 162.) See دِرَّةٌ.

الرِّيَاحُ القُوَّمُ The right [or cardinal] winds. (S, voce نَكْبَاءُ.) الدِّينُ القَيِّمُ (Kur ix. 36) The right, correct, or true, reckoning. (T in art. دين.) b2: قَيِّمُ الأَمْرِ i. q. ↓ مُقِيمُهُ and سَائِسُهُ: fem. قَيِّمَةٌ. (TA.) b3: قَيِّمٌ بِالأَمْرِ A manager of an affair; i. q. إِزَاؤُهُ. (S, Msb, art. ازى.) See قَامَ بِالأَمْرِ. b4: قَيِّمٌ A manager, conductor, orderer, regulator, or superintendent, of an affair: (TA:) a manager, conductor, &c., of the affairs of a people. (JK.) قَيِّمٌ عَلَى المَالِ A good [manager and] tender of camels, &c. (TA in art. بلو.) قِيمَةٌ The real value, or worth, of a thing; its equivalent; differing from ثَمَنٌ, q. v. (MF in art. ثمن.) قَوَامٌ Stature, and goodly stature, or tallness, of a man: (S:) symmetry, or justness of proportion. (Msb.) b2: قِوَامُ الأَمْرِ and قِيَامُهُ and قَوَامُهُ The stay, or support, of the thing, or affair, whereby it subsists, and is managed and ordered. (Msb.) And قِوَامٌ The food that is a man's support; (Msb;) [his subsistence.] b3: قِوَامٌ [The main stay of a thing.] b4: لَا قِوَامَ لَهُ بِهِ [He has not power to withstand him. (K, art. نجز.) قِوَامٌ Subsistence: see رُكْنٌ and طَبَعٌ.

قِيَامٌ [A state of purging, or flux of the belly: used in this sense in the S, K, voce هَيْضَةٌ].

قَوِيمٌ : see صَوِيبٌ.

القَيُّومُ : see يَا قَيُّومُ in the last paragraph of art. شره, where I have rendered it on the authority of an explanation in the TA.

قَوَّامٌ One who rises much, or often, in the night to pray. (TA.) See صَوَّامٌ.

قُومِيَّةٌ is written with damm in copies of the S, K, JK: in the CK, erroneously, قَوْمِيَّةٌ, in both senses. See voce مُتَشَمِّسٌ.

قَائِمٌ Appearing; conspicuous; [as though standing before one]: said of a thing whether standing or thrown down. (TA, in explanation of the phrase هٰذَا نُصْبُ عَيْنِى, art. نصب.) b2: قَائِمَةٌ, pl. قَوَائِمُ, Leg of a horse, &c. b3: عَيْنٌ قَائِمَةٌ An eye [blind, or white and blind, but still whole or] that has become white and blind, but not yet burst, (Az in L, art. سد,) or sightless, but with the black still remaining. (Mgh, Msb.) b4: قَائِمٌ and قَائِمَةٌ The hilt of a sword. (Msb.) b5: قَائِمَةٌ A leg of a table, and of a throne, or moveable seat, &c. (JK.) See also قَامَةٌ; and see إِسْنَادٌ. b6: قَوَمَةُ بَيْتِ النَّارِ (K, art. هربذ.) The servants of the fire-temple. (TA, same art.) b7: القَوَائِمُ The winds. So in a verse of Umeiyeh Ibn-Abi-s-Salt. (TA, voce سَدِرٌ.) b8: قَوَائِمُ المَائِدَةِ [The legs of the table]. (K, art. عقر.) b9: قَطٌّ قَائِمٌ A nibbing in which the pith and the exterior of the reed are made of equal length: opposed to مُصَوَّبٌ. (TA in art. حرف.) b10: مَآءٌ قَائِمٌ Frozen water. And stagnant water: see حِبَاك.

إِقَامَةٌ The form of words chanted by the مُبَلِّغ, not by the مُؤَذِّن, consisting of the common words of the أَذَان, with the addition of قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ (The time of prayer has come!) pronounced twice after حَىَّ عَلَى الفَلَاحِ. See ثَوَّبَ.

مَقَامٌ The place of the feet; (K;) a standingplace; (S, Msb;) as also ↓ مُقَامٌ: (S:) or the latter, a place of stationing: (Msb:) and both, a place of continuance, stay, residence, or abode: (K:) [a standing:] and the latter, a place of long continuance, stay, residence, or abode: (Expos. of the Mo'allakát, Calc., p. 138:) and both, continuance, stay, residence, or abode. (S, K.) مُقَامٌ : see مَقَامٌ.

مُقِيمٌ Lasting; continuing: (Bd, ix. 21:) unceasing. (Bd, ix. 69.) b2: أَخَذَهُ المُقِيمُ المُقْعِدُ: see art. قعد. b3: See قَيِّمٌ.

مَقَامَةٌ A standing-place. Hence, (assumed tropical:) A sittingplace. Hence, (assumed tropical:) The persons sitting there. Hence, (assumed tropical:) An oration, or a discourse, or an exhortation, (خُطْبَة او عِظَة,) or the like, there delivered; as also مَجْلِسٌ. (Mtr, in De Sacy's ed. of El-Hareeree, p. 5.) حَجَرٌ مُتَقَوِّمٌ (K, art. موس) A precious stone. (TA, same art.) المِعَى المُسْتَقِيمُ The rectum.

1 عَنِتَ, [aor. ـَ inf. n. عَنَتٌ, He fell into a difficult, hard, or distressing, case: (S, A, * O, TA:) or عَنَتٌ signifies the meeting with difficulty, hardship, or distress. (K.) [This is held by some to be the primary signification: see عَنَتْ below; by the explanations of which it seems to be indicated that the verb has several significations that are not expressly assigned to it in the lexicons.] عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ, in the Kur [ix. last verse but one], means, accord. to Az [and most of the expositors], Grievous unto him is your experiencing difficulty, or hardship, or distress: or, as some say, the meaning is ↓ مَا أَعْنَتَكُمْ, i. e., what hath brought you into difficulty, or hardship, or distress. (TA. [In the S and O, it seems to be indicated by the context that مَا عَنِتُّمْ meansyour having sinned.]) b2: عَنِتَتِ الدَّابَّةُ The beast limped, or halted, in consequence of hard, or rough, treatment, such as it could not bear. (TA.) It is said in a trad., أَنْعَلَ دَابَّتَهُ فَعَنِتَتْ He shod his beast and it became lame: thus as some relate it; as others relate it, فَعَتَبَتْ; but the former relation is preferred by KT. (TA.) b3: عَنِتَ said of a bone, (Az, A, K, TA,) and عَنِتَتْ said of an arm or a leg, (Az, TA,) [aor. ـَ inf. n. عَنَتٌ, (TA,) It broke (Az, A, K, TA) after its having been set and united: (A, K:) [this is said in the Ksh and by Bd, in iv. 30, to be the primary signification:] and the former, said of a bone, it became weak, and broke. (K, * TA.) b4: عَنِتَ, (S, O, Msb, TA,) aor. ـَ (Msb,) inf. n. عَنَتٌ, (S, * O, * Msb, K, * TA,) He committed a sin, a crime, or an act of disobedience deserving punishment: (S, O, K, * TA: *) or he committed sins, crimes, or acts of disobedience deserving punishment: (K, * TA:) or he did wrong [intentionally or unintentionally]. (Msb.) [and particularly He committed fornication, or adultery: see عَنَتٌ below.]2 عنّتهُ, inf. n. تَعْنِيتٌ, He treated him with hardness, severity, or rigour, and constrained him to do that which was difficult to him to perform; (IAmb, O, K, TA;) as also ↓ تعنّتهُ: and afterwards it became applied to signify he destroyed him; or caused him to perish: (IAmb, TA:) [and ↓ اعنتهُ has both of these significations: for it is said that] لَوْ شَآءَ اللّٰهُ لَأَعْنَتَكُمْ, in the Kur [ii. 219], means If God had willed, He would assuredly have treated you with hardness, &c., and constrained you to do that which would be difficult to you to perform: or it may mean, would have destroyed you: or, accord. to IAar, إِعْنَاتٌ signifies the requiring to do that which is not in one's power. (TA.) b2: See also 5.4 اعنتهُ, (inf. n. إِعْنَاتٌ, Mgh,) He caused him to fall into difficulty, hardship, or distress; (S, Mgh, O, Msb, K, TA;) into that which was difficult, hard, or distressing, to him to bear. (A, O. *) b4: He, or it, broke it (i. e. a bone) after it had been set and united: (Az, S, A,. O, K, TA:) or he (a bone-setter) treated it (i. e. a broken bone) roughly, or ungently, so that the fracture became worse. (TA.) 5 تعنّتهُ: see 2. Accord. to AHeyth, (TA,) He brought upon him annoyance, molestation, harm, or hurt: (Msb, TA:) or he sought to occasion him difficulty, hardship, or distress. (Mgh.) And hence, (Mgh,) He asked him respecting a thing, desiring by doing so to involve him in confusion, or doubt; (A, Mgh, TA;) as when one says to a witness, “Where was this, and when was it, and what garment was upon him when thou tookest upon thyself to bear witness? ” and الشُّهُودَ ↓ يُعَنِّتُ and يَتَعَنَّتُ عَلَى الشُّهُودِ are also mentioned; but these require consideration. (Mgh.) R. Q.1 عَنْتَتَ, said of the horn of the عَتُود [or goat a year old], It rose, or rose high. (O, K.) b2: عنتت عَنْهُ He turned away from, avoided, or shunned, him, or it. (O, K.) عَنَتٌ [inf. n. of 1, q. v.: and also expl. as having the following meanings:] Difficulty, hardship, or distress: (A, IAth, Mgh, Msb, TA:) this is [said to be] the primary signification: (Jel in iv. 30:) or severe difficulty, or hardship, or distress: (Zj, TA:) or the coming of difficulty or hardship or distress upon a man. (K.) b2: A state of perdition or destruction. (A, IAth, K, TA.) b3: A bad, an evil, or a corrupt, state: or bad, evil, or corrupt, conduct or doing: syn. فَسَادٌ [which has both of these meanings; and may here have the former meaning as nearly agreeing with what precedes it, or the latter meaning as nearly agreeing with what follows it]. So in the Kur [iv. 30], where it is said, ذٰلِكَ لِمَنْ خَشِىَ الْعَنَتَ مِنْكُمْ [That is for him, among you, who fears the commission of fornication]: (S, O, Msb, TA: [and the like is said in the Mgh:]) this, says Az, was revealed in relation to him who might not have the means of taking to wife a free woman; therefore it was allowed to him to take to wife a slave: (Msb, TA:) or the meaning of العنت here is perdition: or perdition in [or by means of] fornication. (TA.) b8: Also Wrongful, unjust, injurious, or tyrannical, conduct: and annoyance, molestation, harm, or hurt. (AHeyth, TA.) And Distressing, grievous, or afflicting, harm, injury, hurt, or mischief. (A.) عُنْتُوتٌ: see what next precedes. b2: With the article ال, A mountain, (O,) or tapering mountain, (K,) in the صَحْرَآء [or desert]: (O, K:) or, accord. to the L, a small mountain tapering into [or towards] the sky (جُبَيْلٌ مُسْتَدِقٌّ فِى السَّمَآءِ): and it is said to be دون الحرة [app. دُونَ الحَرَّةِ; but there seems to be here an omission or a mistranscription; for of the various meanings that may be assigned to this phrase, none seems to be apposite: I incline to think that العُنْتُوتُ thus expl. is the proper name of a particular mountain]. (TA.) A2: عُنْتُوتٌ signifies also The notch in a bow: accord. to Az, (TA,) the عُنْتُوت of the bow is the notch into which enters the غَانَة, i. e. the ring at the head of the string. (O, TA.) A3: and The first, or beginning, or commencement, of anything. (O, K.) A4: And Dry حَلِىّ, (O, and so in the CK, [in my MS. copy of the K حَلْى, and thus accord. to the TA, but this is evidently a mistake,]) which is a certain plant. (TA.) عَانِتٌ an epithet applied to a woman, i. q. عَانِسٌ [q. v.]: (O, K:) said to be formed [from the latter] by substitution, or a dial. var., or a word mispronounced. (MF, TA.) مُعْنَتٌ: see عَنِتٌ.

مَعْنَتَةٌ: see عَنَتٌ. [Its primary signification seems to be A cause of difficulty, hardship, or distress; &c.]
