حفش الحِفْشُ: ما كانَ من أسْفاطِ الآنِيَةِ كالقَوارِيْرِ وغيرِها، والجَميعُ: الأحْفَاشُ، والحَفْشُ أيضاً. والحَفْشُ: الحَفْرُ في الأرض. وحَفَشَ المَطَرُ المَسِيْلَ حَفْشاً: جَمَعَ الماءَ من كلِّ جانبٍ إلى مُسْتَنْقَعٍ واحِدٍ، وهي الحَوَافِشُ، والواحِدَةُ: حافِشَةٌ. والفَرَسُ يَحْفِشُ الجَرْيَ: أي يُعْقِبُ جَرْياً بعد جَرْيٍ ولا يَزْدادُ إلاّ جَوْدَةً. وحَفَشُوا علينا الخَيْلَ: صَبُّوها علينا. والحِفْشُ: بَيْتٌ صغيرٌ. وهو الحِرُ - أيضاً -، من قَوْل عمرو بن العاص لِرَجُلٍ من رَبِيعَةَ: " مَوْعِدُكَ حِفْشُ أُمِّكَ ". وهو الوِعَاءُ أيضاً. والإِحْفَاشُ: الإِعْجَالُ.
