[ضفط] رجلٌ ضَفيطٌ بيِّن الضَفاطَةِ، أي ضعيفُ الرأي والعقلِ ; وقد ضفط بالضم. قال ابن عبّاس رضي الله عنه: " إن في ضفطة وهذه إحدى ضفطاتى ". وشهد ابن سيرين نكاحاً فقال: " أين ضَفَاطَتُكُنَّ؟ " يعني الدُفَّ. قال أبو عبيدة: وإنَّما نراه سمَّاه ضَفاطَةً لهذا المعنى، أي إنَّه لهوٌ ولعبٌ، وهو راجعٌ إلى ضعف الرأي والجهل: وأمَّا الضَفَّاطَةُ بالتشديد فشبيهة بالرجَّالَةِ ، وهى الرفقة العظيمة.
