1 ضَفَرَ, (A, Msb, K,) aor. ـِ (Msb, K,) inf. n. ضَفْرٌ, (S, A, &c.,) He plaited, braided, or interwove, (S, A, Mgh, K,) hair, (S, Mgh, K,) &c., (S,) or the like, (TA,) or a [lock of hair, such as is called] ذُؤَابَة, and a [girth of thongs such as is called] نِسْع, (A,) in a wide form; (S, Mgh;) as also ↓ ضفّر, inf. n. تَضْفِيرٌ: (S, TA:) he made hair into ضَفَائِر, [pl. of ضَفِيرَةٌ,] each ضَفِيرَة consisting of three or more distinct portions. (Msb.) b2: He twisted a rope or cord. (K.) b3: ضَفَرَتْ شَعَرَهَا, (S, TA,) aor. ـِ (TA,) inf. n. as above, (K,) said of a woman, (S, TA.) She gathered together her hair. (S.) ضَفْرٌ A camel's girth, of plaited [goats'] hair; (K, * TA;) as also ↓ ضَفَارٌ: (K:) the girth of a camel's saddle: (S:) a wide girth of a camel's saddle; as also ↓ ضَفِيرَةٌ: pl. [of mult.] (of the first, TA) ضُفُورٌ (K, TA) and [of pauc.] أَضْفَارٌ; (TA;) and (of the second, TA) ضُفُرٌ. A2: كِنَانَةٌ ضَفِرَةٌ [in the TA ضفيرة, evidently a mistranscription,] i. q. مُمْتَلِئَةٌ [i. e. A full quiver]. (S, O. [Freytag writes كِنانةُ ضَفِرَةٌ, and explains it as meaning “ Gens Cinanah impleta est: ” but in my copies of the S and in the O, it is كِنَانَةٌ.]) ضَفَارٌ: see ضَفْرٌ, first sentence.

ضَفِيرٌ A rope of [goats'] hair, (Mgh, Msb, TA,) twisted: of the measure فَعِيلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ. (TA.) b2: And (assumed tropical:) The shore, or side, of the sea or of a great river; (O, K, * TA;;) as also ↓ ضَفِيرَةٌ. (TA.) ضَفَيرَةٌ (As, S, M, A, Mgh, Msb, K) and ↓ ضَفْرٌ, (S, M, A, Mgh, K,) the latter an inf. n. used as a subst. [properly so termed], (Mgh,) A single lock of hair: (M, Msb, K:) and (Msb) a [lock of hair such as is termed] ذُؤَابَة, (Mgh, Msb,) or جَمِيرَة and غَدِيرَة, of a woman: (As, TA:) or a plaited, braided, or interwoven, ذؤابة: (A, TA;) or [a plait of hair] consisting of three, or more, distinct portions: (Msb:) or i. q. عَقِيصَةٌ [q. v.]: one says لَهَا ضَفِيرَتَانِ, and ↓ ضَفْرَانِ, meaning عَقِيصَتَانِ: (Yaakoob, S:) or the ضَفِيرَتَانِ pertain to a man, not to a woman; [though such is not the case accord. to modern usage;] and غَدَائِر, [pl. of غَدِيرَةٌ,] to women; and these are مَضْفُورَة [i. e. plaited]: (Az, TA:) the pl. of ضَفِيرَةٌ is ضَفَائِرُ (A, Msb) and ضُفُرٌ; (Msb;) and the pl. of ↓ ضَفْرٌ is ضُفُورٌ. 1 هَبَطَ, (S, Msb, K,) aor. ـِ and هَبُطَ, (Msb, K,) but the latter is of rare occurrence, (Msb,) inf. n. هُبُوطٌ, (S, K,) of that whereof the aor. is هَبِطَ, and of that whereof the aor. is هَبُطَ; (TA;) or of the latter only, that of the former being هَبْطٌ; (Msb;) He, or it, (said of water &c., Msb,) descended: (S, Msb, K:) and ↓ تهبّط he descended, or went down, or went down a declivity; and it sloped down; syn. إِنْحَدَرَ; (TA;) and ↓ انهبط signifies the same as this last; or (assumed tropical:) he became lowered, or degraded; syn. إِنْحَطَّ; (K;) being quasi-pass. of ↓ أَهْبَطَهُ, (S, TA,) and it may be also of هَبَطَهُ, as is said in the M. It is said in the Kur, ii. 58, إِهْبِطُوا مِصْرًا Descend ye into Misr: (Bd:) accord. to one reading, أُهْبُطُوا. (Bd, TA.) You say also هَبَطَ بَلَدَ كَذَا He entered such a town or country. (K.) and هَبَطْتُ مِنْ مَوْضِعٍ إِلَى مَوْضِعٍ I removed him from a place to a place. وَغَنَمِى, aor. ـ, inf. n. هُنُوطٌ, (assumed tropical:) My camels, and my sheep, or goats, suffered loss, or diminution: and in the same sense هَبَطَ is said of flesh, and of fat, and of fatness. And هَبَطَ ثَمَنُ السِّلْعَةِ (tropical:) The price of the commodity, or article of merchandise, became diminished, or lessened, (S, Msb, K, TA.) below its former full rate; (Msb;) became lowered, or abated. هَبْطَةٌ A low, or depressed, piece of land or ground; (Mgh, K;) contr. of صَعْدَةٌ. (Mgh.) هَبُوطٌ A declivity, or declinal place, a place of descent, or by which one descends, (S, Msb, K;) a place which brings one down from a higher to a lower place. (Az, TA.) هَبيطٌ (tropical:) Lean, or emaciated, by reason of disease; as also ↓ مَهْبُوطٌ: (K:) both are applied to a camel, signifying whose fatness has become diminished; as also ↓ هَابِطٌ: (TA:) and the first, to a she-camel, signifying lean, and lank in the belly; (AO, S;) or to a wild bull, to which a she-camel is likened in respect of her swiftness, and her briskness, liveliness, or sprightliness (IB:) and ↓ the second signifies rendered lean. or emaciated, by disease, so that his flesh quivers. (TA.) هَابِطٌ [act. part. n. of 1, both intrans. and trans.] The rájiz says, مَا رَاعَِنى إِلَّا جَنَاحٌ هَابِطَا عَلَى البُيُوت قَوْطَهُ العُلَابِطَا [Nothing surprised me but the wolf sending down upon the tents his flock of sheep, or goats, fifty or more in number]: he means مُهْبِطًا قَوْطَهُ: so says ISd: or he may mean هَابِطًا عَلَى قَوْطِهِ [descending upon his flock, &c.]; making هابطا trans by ellipsis: (TA:) جناح, in this verse, is the name of a wolf. 1 جَمَدَ, aor. ـُ inf. n. جَمْدٌ and جُمُودٌ, said of water, (S, M, L, Msb, K,) &c., (Msb,) [i. e.,] of anything fluid, or liquid, (K,) It congealed; concreted; became solid, or contr. of fluid or liquid; froze; syn. قَامَ; (S, M;) contr. of ذَابَ; (Msb, K;) as also جَمُدَ. (L, K.) And said of blood, &c., (S, M,) It congealed, or concreted; syn. قام: (M:) or became dry; dried. (S.) جُمُدٌ and ↓ جُمْدٌ Elevated ground; as also ↓ جَمَدٌ: (M, K:) or a hard, elevated place: (S, TA:) or جُمُدٌ signifies rugged ground: (TA:) or an elevated, rugged place: (As, TA:) or a small isolated mountain, not high, sometimes rugged and sometimes soft, and producing trees, only found in rugged land; so called because of its dryness; it is the smallest kind of أَكَمَة, round and small, not extending along the ground, rugged at the top, and producing herbs, or leguminous plants, as well as trees; differing from جُمُودٌ [q. v.]: (ISh, L, TA:) pl. [of mult.] جِمَادٌ (ISh, S, M, K) and [of pauc.] أَجْمَادٌ. (S, M, K.) b2: Also, the first, A stone: pl. جِمَادٌ. (Fr, TA.) جَمَادٌ (assumed tropical:) [A thing that does not grow, or increase; that is incapable of growth, or increase; an inorganic thing; as a mineral and the like:] an inanimate thing; a thing that has no soul: [an epithet used as a subst.; or an epithet in which the quality of a subst. is predominant:] pl. جَمَادَاتٌ. (AA, L in art. جهد.) b3: (tropical:) A year (سَنَةٌ) in which is no rain: (S, K:) or in which is no produce of the earth: (A:) and, in like manner, ↓ جَامِدَةٌ a year in which is no herbage, or pasture, no plenty, or fruitfulness, and no rain. (T, TA.) b4: (tropical:) A she-camel having no milk; (S, M, K;) and so a ewe or a she-goat: (L:) or having little milk: (T, TA:) and [accord. to some,] a slow she-camel; syn. بَطِيْئَةٌ; (L, K;) but [this is app. a mistranscription for بَكِيْئَةٌ

A2: A kind of cloth or garment; as also ↓ جِمَادٌ. (K.) جَمَادِ, like قَطَامِ, (K,) or جَمَادِ لَهُ, (S, A, L,) said with reference to a niggard, (S, A, L, K,) in dispraise, (K,) as an imprecation, meaning (tropical:) May a stagnant, or an unimproving, state or condition (جُمُودُ الحَالِ) be his lot [or his constant lot]: (A:) or may he not cease to be in a stagnant, or an unimproving, state or condition (لَا زَالَ جَامِدَ الحَالِ). (S, L.) جَمَادِ is [a proper name,] indecl., with kesr for its termination, because it is transformed from the inf. n., namely, الجُمُودُ, like فَجَارِ, which means الفَجْرَةُ: (S:) and the contr. of جَمَادِ لَهُ is جَمَادِ لَهُ, (S, * A,) which denotes praise. (S.) El-Mutalemmis says, جَمَادِ لَهَا وَلَا تَقُولِى

لَهَا أَبَدًا إِذَا ذُكِرَتْ حَمَادِ i. e., Say thou جُمُودًا to her, [جُمُودًا,] and say not to her [ever, when she is mentioned,] حَمْدًا and شُكْرًا. (S.) جِمَادٌ: see جَمَادٌ, last meaning.

جُمُودٌ [app. Elevated tracts,] softer, or more plain, than what is termed جُمُدٌ, and more intermixed with soft, or plain, tracts, sometimes in, or by, that [kind of high ground] which is termed قُفٌّ, and sometimes in, or by, soft, or plain, tracts. (ISh, L, TA.) جَمِيدُ العَيْنِ: see جَامِدٌ.

جُمَادَى One of the names of the months, (Msb, K,) applied to two of the Arabian months, together called جُمَادَيَانِ, (TA,) and distinguished by the appellations of جُمَادَى الأُولَى and جُمَادَى

الآخِرَةُ [the fifth and sixth months of the Arabian year]: (S, K:) it is of the measure فُعَالَى, from الجَمْدُ; (S;) the two months to which it is applied being [said to be] so called because, when the months were named, these two fell in the season of the freezing of water: (ISd, L, Msb:) [but this derivation seems to have been invented when the two months thus named had fallen back, into, or beyond, the winter; for when they received this appellation, the former of them evidently commenced in March, and the latter ended in May; therefore I hold the opinion of M. Caussin de Perceval, that they were thus called because falling in a period when the earth had become dry and hard by reason of paucity of rain, from جَمَادٌ, an epithet applied to land upon which rain has not fallen, or from جُمَادَى, an epithet applied to an eye that sheds few tears; which opinion is confirmed by the obvious derivations of the names of other months, صَفَرٌ and رَبِيعٌ and رَمَضَانُ and شَوَّالٌ:] afterwards, when the lunar months superseded the solar, the same names were retained: (Msb:) [see زَمَنٌ, and الهِجْرَةُ:] جمادى is determinate, (K,) being a proper name, (TA,) and of the fem. gender: (Msb, K:) if you find it masc., it is because it is made to accord to الشَّهْرُ: all the other names of the months are masc.: (Fr, IAmb, Msb:) the pl. is جُمَادَيَاتٌ, (Fr, L, K,) agreeably with analogy; and if the form جِمَادٌ [a mistranscription for جَمَائِدُ, like حَبَائِرُ, pl. of حُبَارَى,] were used, it would also be agreeable with analogy. (Fr, L.) The former of these two months is also called جُمَادَى خَمْسَةٍ; and the latter, جُمَادَى سِتَّةٍ; (K;) which mean, respectively, Jumádà the fifth month and Jumádà the sixth month, from the commencement of the year. (TA.) Lebeed says, [describing a pair of wild asses,] حَتَّى إِذَا سَلَخَا جُمَادَى سِتَّةً

جَزَآ فَطَالَ صِيَامُهُ وَصِيَامُهَا [Until, when they both pass, and come to the end of, Jumádà, completing six months, they satisfy themselves with green pasture so as to be in no need of water, and his and her abstinence from water becomes of long continuance]: thus cited by Bundár; ستّة being in the accus. case as a denotative of state, and by جمادى being meant جمادى الآخرة: or, accord. to IAar, the poet said ستّةٍ, meaning the six months of winter, which are the months of dew; and Aboo-'Amr Esh-Sheybánee says the like. AHn says that the Arabs applied the name of جمادى to The whole of the winter; [see above;] whether the winter were at the same time as the months so called or not: and Aboo-Sa'eed says the like. جَمَّادٌ (tropical:) A sword such that he who is struck with it becomes motionless (يَجْمُدُ): (A, TA:) or a sharp, cutting, sword. (AA, K.) جَامِدٌ, applied to water, (Msb, K,) &c., (Msb,) [i. e.] anything fluid, or liquid, (K,) In a state of congelation, concretion, or solidity; freezing; as also ↓ جَمْدٌ; contr. of ذَائِبٌ: (Msb, K:) you say مَآءٌ جَمْدٌ [as well as مَآءٌ جَامِدٌ]: (Msb:) or ↓ جَمْدٌ signifies what is congealed, or frozen, of water [&c.]; ice; (S, A;) contr. of ذَوْبٌ: (S:) [see also جَمَدٌ:] it is originally an inf. n.: (S, Msb, K:) [or it is an epithet from جَمُدَ, like ضَخْمٌ from ضَخُمَ:] and ↓ جَمَدٌ is a pl. [or rather a quasi-pl. n.] of جَامِدٌ, (S, Msb, K,) like as خَدَمٌ is of خَادِمٌ: (S, Msb:) you say, قَدْ كَثُرَ الجَمَدُ [The frozen waters have become many]. (S.) [Hence,] مُخَّةٌ جَامِدَةٌ A hard piece of marrow. (L.) b2: (assumed tropical:) Remaining fixed, stationary, or motionless. (Bd and Jel in xxvii. 90.) b3: (assumed tropical:) A thing that does not grow, or increase; [incapable of growth, or increase; inanimate;] as stone, in contradistinction to a tree [and an animal]. 1 مَرَخَ جَسَدَهُ, (S, K,) aor. ـَ (K,) inf. n. مَرْخٌ; (S;) and ↓ مرّخهُ, (S, K,) inf. n. تَمْرِيخٌ; (S;) He anointed his body (K) with oil (S, K) &c. (K.) And مَرَخَ إِدَاوَتَهُ He smeared with clay his إِدَاوَة [or small vessel of skin, for water,] in order that its odour might become good. (IAar, TA in art. ذرح.) 2 مَرَّخَ see 1.4 أَمْرَخَ امرخ He made dough, or paste, thin, (S, K,) by putting much water to it. (S.) 5 تمرّخ بِالدُّهْنِ He anointed himself with oil. (L.) مَرْخٌ [a coll. gen. n.] A certain kind of tree that quickly emits fire: (S, K:) it is of the kind called عِضَاه, and spreads, and grows high, so that people rest in its shade: it has neither leaves nor thorns, its branches being bare and slender twigs; and it grows in [small water-courses such as are termed] شُعَب, and in hard grounds: of it are made the wooden instruments for producing fire which are called زِنَاد: the n. un. is with ة (AHn, L) its shade is thin: (L:) there is no tree that surpasses the مرخ in yeilding fire: sometimes these trees are clustered and tangled together, and the wind blowing, and striking one part of them against another, they emit fire, and burn the valley: Aboo-Ziyád:) [the cynanchum viminale. Hist. rei. herb., p. 252: as mentioned by Freytag.)] It is said in a proverb, فِى كُلِّ شَجَرٍ نَارْ وَاسْتَمْجَدَ المَرْخُ وَالْعَفَارْ [In all trees is fire; but the markh and 'afár yield much fire]: (S:) accord. to AHn, the meaning is, endeavour to strike fire with gentleness; for that will be sufficient if the زِنَاد be مَرْخ. (L.) See also عَفَارٌ, and استمجد. The عفار is the زَنْد, which is the upper [piece of the two which compose the زَنَاد]; and the مَرْخ is the lower. (S, L.) [See also another proverb at the end of art. دفل.] b2: أَرْخِ يَدَيْكَ وَاسْتَرْخِ إِنَّ الزِّنَادَ مِن مَّرْخِ [Relax thy hands, and relax thyself, for the wooden instrument for striking fire is of markh]. (A, TA, in art. رقط.) And نَقَّطَتِ المَرْأَةُ وَجْهَهَا وَخَدَّهَا بِالسَّوَادِ تَتَحَسَّنُ بِذٰلِكَ [The woman made specks, or small spots, upon her face, with black, beautifying herself thereby]. (TA.) 5 تنقّط [quasi-pass. of 2; It became pointed, &c. b2: And hence,] (tropical:) It (a place) became seattered with spots, or portions, of herbage. (K, TA.) نَقْطَةٌ inf. n. un. of 1, [A single act of pointing, &c.] (Msb.) نُقْطَةٌ A diacritical point of a letter or word: a syllabical point thereof: see 1:] (K:) [a point, dot, speck, speckle, or small spot: a mathematical point; i. e.] the extremity of a line: (TA:) pl. نُقَطٌ (S, Msb, K,) and نِقَاطٌ. (Az, S, K.) Hence, one says, مَا اخْتَلَفَا فى نُقْطَةٍ They two did not differ respecting so small a thing as a point of a letter or word. (TA.) And [hence] the vulgar say, when they admire one, هُوَ نُقْطَةٌ فِى مُصْحَفٍ (assumed tropical:) [He is like a point, or stop, in a copy of the Kur-án; because the stops in the Kur-án are generally ornamented, and often very beautifully, with gold and colours]. (TA.) b2: (assumed tropical:) [Any very small thing, that may be likened to a point, dot, or speck. Hence,] 'Alee is related to have said, العِلْمُ نُقْطَةٌ إِنَّمَا كَتَّرَهَا الجَاهِلُونَ (assumed tropical:) [Science, or knowledge, is a very small thing: only the ignorant have made it to be much]. (TA.) And you say, أَعْطَاهُ نُقْطَةً مِنْ عَسَلٍ (tropical:) [He gave him a drop, or very small quantity, of honey]. (TA.) b3: (tropical:) [A portion of a thing, or some of a number of things, in a separate, or scattered, state, here and there] You say, مَا بَقِىَ مِنْ

أَمْوَالِهِمْ إِلَّا نُقْطَةَ (tropical:) There remained not of their possessions [aught] save some palm-trees and a portion of seed-produce here and there. (IAar, TA) And فِى الأَرْضِ نِقَاطٌ مِنَ الكَلَإِ, and نُقَطٌ مِنْهُ. (tropical:) In the land are scattered spots, or portions, of herbage. (K, * TA.) b4: (assumed tropical:) A thing: an affair; a matter: a case; an event; an action. (TA.) نُقَيْطَةٌ dim. of نُقْطَةٌ. (TA.) نَقَّاطٌ One who points copies of the Kur-án &c.; i. e. adds the diacritical and other points. 1 نَظَمَ [He pierced:] he pierced and knotted a cord or rope: and he (a خَوَّاص) pierced and plaited [the leaves of] the مُقْل. (M.) b2: نَظَمَ He strung beads. (Msb.) 8 اِنْتَظَمَهُ He transfixed, or transpierced, him; (M;) i. q. اِخْتَلَّهُ. (S, M, K.) b2: اِنْتَظَمَ It (an affair [and language, &c.]) wa. or became, rightly [or regularly] ordered, arranged, or disposed. (Msb.) نَظْمٌ What are strung, of pearls and beads, &c.
