وعز: الوَعْزُ: التَّقْدِمَةُ في الأَمر والتَّقَدُّمُ فيه. وعَزَ
ووَعَّزَ: قَدَّمَ أَو تَقَدَّمَ؛ قال:
قد كنتُ وَعَّزْتُ إِلى عَلاءِ،
في السِّرِّ والإِعْلانِ والنَّجاءِ،
بأَنْ يُحِقَّ وَذَمَ الدِّلاءِ
ويقال: وَعَّزْتُ إِليه تَوْعِيزاً. قال الأَزهري: ويقال أَوْعَزْتُ
إِلى فلان في ذلك الأَمر إِذا تقدمت إِليه. وحكي عن ابن السكيت قال: يقال
وَعَّزْتُ وأَوْعَزْتُ، ولم يجز وَعَزْتُ، مخففاً، ونحو ذلك روى أَبو حاتم
عن الأَصمعي أَنه أَنكر وَعَزْتُ، بالتخفيف؛ قال الجوهري: وقد يخفف فيقال
وَعَزْتُ إِليه وَعْزاً.
