(كَوَفَ) الْكَافُ وَالْوَاوُ وَالْفَاءُ أُصَيْلٌ يَقُولُونَ: إِنَّهُ يَدُلُّ عَلَى اسْتِدَارَةٍ فِي شَيْءٍ. قَالُوا: تَكَوَّفَ الرَّمْلُ: اسْتَدَارَ. قَالُوا: وَلِذَلِكَ سُمِّيَتِ الْكُوفَةُ. وَيَقُولُونَ: وَقَعْنَا فِي كُوفَانٍ وَكَُوَّفَانٍ، أَيْ عَنَاءٍ وَمَشَقَّةٍ، كَأَنَّهُمُ اشْتَقُّوا ذَلِكَ مِنَ الرَّمْلِ الْمُتَكَوِّفِ، لِأَنَّ الْمَشْيَ فِيهِ يُعَنِّي.
