(كَسَفَ) الْكَافُ وَالسِّينُ وَالْفَاءُ أَصْلٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى تَغَيُّرٍ فِي حَالِ الشَّيْءِ إِلَى مَا لَا يُحَبُّ، وَعَلَى قَطْعِ شَيْءٍ مِنْ شَيْءٍ. مِنْ ذَلِكَ كُسُوفُ الْقَمَرِ، وَهُوَ زَوَالُ ضَوْئِهِ. وَيُقَالُ: رَجُلٌ كَاسِفُ الْوَجْهِ، إِذَا كَانَ عَابِسًا. وَهُوَ كَاسِفُ الْبَالِ، أَيْ سَيِّئُ الْحَالِ.

وَأَمَّا الْقَطْعُ فَيُقَالُ: كَسَفَ الْعُرْقُوبُ بِالسَّيْفِ كَسْفًا يُكْسِفُهُ. وَالْكِسْفَةُ: الطَّائِفَةُ مِنَ الثَّوْبِ، يُقَالُ: أَعْطِنِي كِسْفَةً مِنْ ثَوْبِكَ. وَالْكِسْفَةُ: الْقِطْعَةُ مِنَ الْغَيْمِ. قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: {وَإِنْ يَرَوْا كِسْفًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ سَاقِطًا} [الطور: 44] .
