يقال لمن طعن في السّنّ: الشَّيْخُ، وقد يعبّر به فيما بيننا عمّن يكثر علمه، لما كان من شأن الشَّيْخِ أن يكثر تجاربه ومعارفه، ويقال: شَيْخٌ بيّن الشَّيْخُوخَةُ، والشَّيْخُ، والتَّشْيِيخُ. قال الله تعالى: هذا بَعْلِي شَيْخاً
