(شَهَِلَ) الشِّينُ وَالْهَاءُ وَاللَّامُ أَصْلٌ فِي بَعْضِ الْأَلْوَانِ، وَهِيَ الشُّهْلَةُ فِي الْعَيْنِ، وَذَلِكَ أَنْ يَشُوبَ سَوَادَهَا زُرْقَةٌ.

وَمِمَّا لَيْسَ فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ: امْرَأَةٌ شَهْلَةٌ، قَالُوا: هِيَ النَّصَفُ الْعَاقِلَةِ. قَالُوا: وَذَلِكَ اسْمٌ لَهَا خَاصَّةً، لَا يُوصَفُ بِهِ الرَّجُلُ. كَذَا قَالَ أَهْلُ اللُّغَةِ. فَأَمَّا الْعَرَبُ فَقَدْ سَمَّتْ بِشَهْلٍ، وَهُوَ الْفِنْدُ الزِّمَّانِيُّ، يُقَالُ إِنَّ اسْمَهُ شَهْلُ بْنُ شَيْبَانَ.

وَمِمَّا شَذَّ أَيْضًا: الْمُشَاهَلَةُ: الْمُشَارَّةُ، وَأَظُنُّ الشِّينَ مُبْدَلَةً مِنْ جِيمٍ. وَكَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُمْ لِلْحَاجَةِ: شَهْلَاءُ، وَهُوَ مِنْ بَابِ الْإِبْدَالِ، وَالْأَصْلُ الْكَافُ: الشَّكْلَاءُ.
