(حَشَفَ) الْحَاءُ وَالشِّينُ وَالْفَاءُ أَصْلٌ وَاحِدٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى رَخَاوَةٍ وَضَعْفٍ وَخَلُوقَةٍ.

فَأَوَّلُ ذَلِكَ الْحَشَفُ، وَهُوَ أَرْدَأُ التَّمْرِ. وَيَقُولُونَ فِي أَمْثَالِهِمْ: " أَحَشَفًا وَسُوءَ كِيلَةٍ "، لِلرَّجُلِ يَجْمَعُ أَمْرَيْنِ رَدِيَّيْنِ. قَالَ امْرُؤُ الْقَيْسِ:

كَأَنَّ قُلُوبَ الطَّيْرِ رَطْبًا وَيَابِسًا ... لَدَى وَكْرِهَا الْعُنَّابُ وَالْحَشَفُ الْبَالِي

وَإِنَّمَا ذَكَرَ قُلُوبَهَا لِأَنَّهَا أَطْيَبُ مَا فِي الطَّيْرِ، وَهِيَ تَأْتِي فِرَاخَهَا بِهَا. وَيُقَالُ حَشِفَ خِلْفُ النَّاقَةِ، إِذَا ارْتَفَعَ مِنْهُ اللَّبَنُ. وَالْحَشِيفُ: الثَّوْبُ الْخَلَقُ. وَقَدْ تَحَشَّفَ الرَّجُلُ: لَبِسَ الْحَشِيفَ. قَالَ:

يُدْنِي الْحَشِيفَ عَلَيْهَا كَيْ يُوَارِيَهَا ... وَنَفْسَهَا وَهْوَ لَلْأَطْمَارِ لَبَّاسُ وَالْحَشَفَةُ: الْعَجُوزُ الْكَبِيرَةُ، وَالْخَمِيرَةُ الْيَابِسَةُ، وَالصَّخْرَةُ الرِّخْوَةُ حَوْلَهَا السَّهْلُ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ.
