[ثفر] الثَفْرُ للسِباع وكلِّ ذات مخلبٍ بمنزلة الحياءِ من الناقة، وربما استعير لغيرها. قال الاخطل: جزى الله عنا الاعورين ملامة * وفروة ثفر الة المتضاجم - وفروة: اسم رجل. ونصب الثفر على البدل منه، وهو لقبه كقولك: عبد الله قفة. وإنما خفض المتضاجم وهو من صفة الثفر على الجوار، كقولهم: جحر ضب خرب. والثفر، بالتحريك: ثَفَرُ الدابة. وقد أَثْفرْتُهَا، أي شددت عليها الثَفَرَ. ودابّةٌ مِثْفارٌ: يرمي بسرجه إلى مؤخَّره. واسْتَثْفَرَ الرجلُ بثَوبه، إذا لوى بطرفه بين رجليه إلى حُجْزته. واسْتَثْفَرَ الكلب بذنبه، إذا جعله بنى فَخِذيه. قال الزبرقان بن بدر : تَعدو الذئابُ على مَن لا كلابَ له * وتَتَّقي مَرْبَضَ المُسْتَثْفِرِ الحامى -
