[بتر] بترت الشئ بترا: قطعته قبل الإتمام. والانْبِتارُ: الانقطاعُ. والباتِرُ: السيفُ القاطعُ. والأَبْتَرُ: المقطوعُ الذَّنَبِ. تقول منه: بَتِرَ بالكسر يَبْتَرُ بترا. وفى الحديث : " ما هذه البتيراء ". والابتر: الذى لا عقب له. وكل أمرٍ انقَطَع من الخيْر أثرهُ فهو أَبْتَرُ. وخطب زيادٌ خطبته البَتْراءَ، لأنَّه لم يحمد الله فيها، ولم يصلِّ على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم. ابن السكيت: الأَبْتَرانِ: العبدُ والعَيْرُ. قال: سُمِّيا أَبْتَرَيْنِ لقلَّة خيرهما. وقد أَبْتَرَهُ الله: أي صَيَّرَهُ أَبْتَرَ. ويقال رجلٌ أُباتِر، بضم الهمزة، للذي يقطع رَحِمَهُ. قال الشاعر : لئيمٌ نَزَتْ في أنفِه خُنْزُوانَةٌ * على قطع ذى القربى أحذ أباتر - والبترية: فرقة من الزيدية، نسبوا إلى المغيرة بن سعد، ولقبه الابتر.
