زوق

2 زوّقهُ, (O, Msb, TA,) inf. n. تَزْوِيقٌ, (Msb, K,) [seems to signify primarily He washed it over with زَاوُوق, i. e. quicksilver; he silvered it therewith.] One says, زوّق الدَّرَاهِمَ [He washed over the dirhems with quicksilver]; from الزَّاوُوقُ. (MA.) b2: [Then, He gilded it with an amalgam of quicksilver and gold: see زَاوُوقٌ. b3: And hence,] He decorated it, and embellished it; namely, a thing [of any kind: and particularly he painted it]: but IF says that زوّقهُ, meaning thus, is without foundation; that they say it is from الزَّوُوقُ meaning الزِئْبَقُ; [as it is said to be in the K;] but that this is [mere] assertion. (O, TA.) [Whether properly or improperly, however,] one says, زَوَّقَ البَيْتَ بِالزَّاوُوقِ, i. e. He decorated the house, or chamber, [perhaps meaning the House of God, at Mekkeh, i. e. the Kaabeh, as appears to be probable from what here follows,] and changed its colour and its fashion or semblance, with زاووق, i. e. زئبق. (Har p. 107.) And it is related in a trad. that he [Mohammad] said to Ibn-'Omar, إِذَا رَأَيْتَ قُرَيْشًا قَدْ هَدَمُوا البَيْتَ ثُمَّ بَنَوْهُ فَزَوَّقُوهُ فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ المَوْتَ فَمُتْ [When thou seest Kureysh shall have demolished the House of God, then built it again, and decorated it, if thou be able to die, then die]: he disliked the تَزْوِيق of mosques because of its inducing desire for the things of the present world, and its finery, or because of its diverting the person praying. (TA.) b4: One says also, (TA,) زَوَّقْتُ الكَلَامَ, and الكِتَابَ, (assumed tropical:) I embellished the speech, or language, and the writing, or book; and (tropical:) I rectified, or corrected, it. (S, TA.) And زَوَّرَ فُلَانٌ كِتَابَهُ and زَوَّقَهُ both mean (tropical:) Such a one rectified, or corrected, his writing, or book. (TA.) b5: And زَوَّقُوا الجَارِيَةَ They embellished the girl, or young woman, with نُقُوش [or decorations, app. such as are made by tattooing, or staining with حِنَّآء]: such decoration is termed ↓ زَوَاقٌ, like سَحَابٌ: and hence, ↓ تَزَيَّقِى, [Embellish thyself &c.,] said to a woman; [so that it is originally ↓ تَزَوَّقِى;] or this is from زيق, [i. e. زِيقٌ,] with ى. زَوَقَةٌ [pl. of زَائِقٌ, act. part. n. of the unused verb زَاقَ,] Decorators, or embellishers, of the ceilings of houses or chambers. (AA, TA.) [See also زَوَّاقٌ.]

زَاوُوقٌ, (S, O, K, [in the CK written زاؤُقْ, as though it were زَاؤُوقٌ, the quiescent و being indicated by the sign of sukoon after the dammeh,]) of the dial. of the people of El-Medeeneh, (AA, S, O,) i. q. زِئْبَقٌ [i. e. Quicksilver]; (AA, S, O, K;) as also ↓ زُوَقٌ; (AA, O, K;) but from what is said by IB, it would seem that this last word is pl. of زَاوُوقٌ: (TA:) it is used in ↓ تَزَاوِيق [meaning decorations, or embellishments, pl. of تَزْويقٌ used as a simple subst., or of the n. un. تَزْوِيقَةٌ]; (S, O;) and hence, [accord. to some,] التَّزْوِيقُ signifying

“ the act of decorating, and embellishing; ” (K;) for it is put, together with gold, (S, O, K,) for overlaying therewith, (K,) upon iron, (S, O,) and then it is put into the fire, whereupon the زئبق [or quicksilver] goes from it [by evaporation], and the gold remains: (S, O, K:) and hence anything decorated, or embellished, is termed ↓ مُزَوَّقٌ, (S, O,) though not having in it زئبق. (S.) تَزْوِيقٌ inf. n. of 2. (Msb.) [Used as a simple subst., this, or the n. un. تَزْوِيقَةٌ, has for its pl. تَزَاوِيقُ:] see the next preceding paragraph.

مُزَوَّقٌ Washed over with [زَاوُوق or] زِئْبَق [i. e. quicksilver]; applied to a dirhem. (TA.) Decorated therewith (TA) [or with an amalgam of quicksilver and gold subjected to the action of fire so that the quicksilver is evaporated]. b2: and hence, (TA,) Anything decorated, or embellished, (S, O, Msb, K, TA,) though not having in it زِئْبَق. (S, O.) خرم

1 خَرَمَهُ, aor. ـِ inf.n. خَرْمٌ, He perforated, or pierced, it; namely, a thing. (Msb.) [And so خَزَمَهُ. (Mgh in art. خزم.)] b2: And He cut it, or cut it off. (Msb.) You say, مَا خَرَمْتُ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا I did not diminish, and did not cut off, from it, or him, anything. (S.) And مَا خَرَمَ مِنَ الحَدِيثِ حَرْفًا He did not diminish [from the narrative, or tradition, a letter, or a word]. (TA.) and خَرَمَ فُلَانًا, (K,) aor. and inf. n. as above, (TA,) He slit the partition between the nostrils of such a one: (K:) or خَرْمٌ signifies the mutilating (قَطْع) of the nose: (JK:) or mutilation (قَطْع) in the partition between the nostrils and in the نَاشِرَتَانِ [or two alœ], or in the extremity of the أَرْنَبَة [or lobule of the nose]; not amounting to what is termed جَدْعٌ; (Lth, TA;) and the epithet is ↓ أَخْرَمُ, fem. خَرْمَآءُ: (Lth, JK, TA:) and the like in the lip; or in the upper part of the فُوق [app. meaning the front edge of the lobe, which at its termination above forms a crena,] of the ear: (Lth, TA: [see أَخْرَمُ, as relating to the ear:]) accord. to Sh, it is both in the nose and in the ear; but in the nose, it is the mutilation (قطع) of the fore part of the nostril of a man, and the أَرْنَبَة [or lobule of the nose], after the mutilation of the upper part of this, so as to reach the interior of the nose; and the epithet applied to the man is ↓ أَخْرَمُ. (TA.) And خَرَمَهُ, inf. n. as above, also signifies He hit, or hurt, his خَوْرَمَة [q. v.]. (TA.) You say also, خَرَمَ الخُرْزَةَ, (K, TA, in the CK [erroneously] الخَرَزَةَ,) aor. as above, (K,) and so the inf. n.; (TA;) and ↓ خرّمها, (K,) inf.n. تَخْرِيمٌ; (TA;) He cracked, or tore without separating, the suture, or seam, of a skin; syn. فَصَمَهَا: (K, TA, in the CK قَصَمَها:) or خَرَمْتُ الخَرْزَ, aor. and inf. n. as above, i. q. أَثْأَيْتُهُ [meaning I spoiled the sewing of the skin, or hide; as when one uses a thick instrument for sewing or perforating, and a thin thong; or as when one rends two stitch-holes into one]. (S.) [And خَرَمَهُ سَيْلٌ app. A torrent cut into it, or trenched it; namely, the ground, or the side of a mountain: see خَرْمٌ.] And ↓ خَرَمَتْهُ خَوَارِمُ [lit. Cutting-off events cut him off]; meaning (assumed tropical:) he died: like as one says, شَعَبَتْهُ شَعُوبُ. (TA. [See also 8.]) b3: خَرَمَ القِرْطَاسَ He hit the target with his arrow without perforating it. (TA.) b4: مَا خَرَمَ عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ He (a guide) did not turn aside from the way. (JK, S.) A2: خَرِمَ, (S, K,) aor. ـَ (K,) inf. n. خَرَمٌ, (S,) said of a man, (S, K,) He had the partition between his nostrils cut, or mutilated: or the extremity of his nose, but not to the extent denoted by the term جَدْعٌ: the epithet applied to the man in this case is ↓ أَخْرَمُ: (S:) or he had the partition between his nostrils slit; i. e. وَتَرَتُهُ ↓ تَخَرَّمَتْ. (K.) A3: خَرُمَ, aor. ـُ He cared not for what he did nor for what was said to him. (K.) 2 خَرَّمَ see 1. b2: [Hence,] ضَرْعٌ فِيهِ تَخْرِيمٌ An udder in which are incisions [or crackings of the skin]; and so فيه تَشْرِيمٌ. (TA.) 5 تخرّمت وَتَرَتُهُ: see 1, last sentence but one.

تخرّمت الخُرْزَةُ (K, TA, in the CK [erroneously]

خَرَمَهَا,) The suture, or seam, of a skin cracked, or became torn without separating; quasi-pass. of خَرَمَهَا [q. v.]. (K, TA.) ↓ انخرم [in like manner] signifies It became slit; said of the bore of the ear. (S.) And you say also, تخرّم الزَّنْدُ [The wooden instrument for producing fire cracked, or split]. (TA.) Hence the phrase, أَرَاكَ يَتَخَرَّمُ زَنْدُكَ, mentioned by IAar, meaning (assumed tropical:) I see thee to have no good in thee: for when the زند cracks, or splits, (إِذَا تَخَرَّمَ,) one cannot produce fire by mean of it, and there is no good in it. (TA.) [Hence likewise,] تخرّم زَنْدُهُ means also (tropical:) His anger became appeased: [or,] accord. to the S, تخرّم زَبَدُهُ has this meaning: and accord. to the A, تخرّم أَنْفُهُ has the same meaning. (TA.) Accord. to IAar, (TA,) جَآءَنَا فُلَانٌ يَتَخَرَّمُ زَبَدُهُ means (tropical:) Such a one came to us doing to us that which was wrongful, or injurious, and foolish, or stupid. (K, * TA.) A2: See also 8, in two places.

A3: تخرّم also signifies He followed, or adopted, the religion of the خُرَّمِيَّة. (S, K, TA: in the CK, the مَخْرِمِيَّة.) 7 انخرم It became cut, or cut off. (Msb.) See also 5. Said of a writing, or book, it means It became deficient; part of it went. (TA.) And said of a generation, It went away; came to an end. (TA.) See also أَخْرَمُ.8 اِخْتَرَمَهُمُ الدَّهْرُ Time, or fortune, cut them off; and extirpated them; as also ↓ تَخَرَّمَهُمْ: (S:) or destroyed them by its calamities. (Msb.) And اِخْتَرَمَتْهُمُ المَنِيَّةُ and ↓ تَخَرَّمَتْهُمْ Death, or the decree of death, cut them off; and extirpated them. (K.) And اِخَْرَمَتْهُ المَنِيَّةُ Death, or the decree of death, [cut him off, or] took him away, (JK, K, TA,) مِنْ بَيْنِ أَصْحَابِهِ [from amidst his companions. (TA. [A phrase similar to خَرَمَتْهُ خَوَارِمُ: see 1.]) And اُخْتُرِمَ عَنَّا (JK, * K,) [He was cut off from us by death;] he was taken away [from us by death]; (JK;) he died, (K, TA,) and went away [from us]. (TA.) Accord. to some, اِخْتِرامٌ [as an inf. n. of اُخْتُرِمَ] signifies The dying suddenly. (Har p. 123.) خَرْمٌ A prominence, or projecting part, of a mountain: (JK, S, K:) pl. خُرُومٌ. (JK.) and A bed trenched by a torrent (مَا خَرَمَ سَيْلٌ [see 1]): (JK:) so some say: (TA:) or a road in a [tract of high ground such as is termed]

قُفّ; or on the summit of a mountain. (JK, TA.) [See also مَخْرِمٌ.]

خُرْمٌ The place of the bore, or perforation, of a thing. (Msb.) The eye of a needle. (TA.) b2: See also مَخْرِمٌ.

خَرَمَةٌ The place of perforation of the ear: (S:) or the place of slitting, of the nose, in the partition between the nostrils [and in either of the alœ, as appears from what here follows]. (K.) It is said in a trad., فِى الخَرَمَاتِ الثَّلَاثِ مِنَ الأَنْف الدِّيَةُ, by الخرمات being app. meant

↓ المَخْرُومَات, i. e. [In the case of the mutilation of] the two alœ and the partition between the nostrils [the blood-wit, or fine for homicide, shall be paid]. (TA.) خُرْمَانٌ A lie, or falsehood. (S, K.) One says, جَآءَ فُلَانٌ بِالخُرْمَانِ (S, TA) i. e. [Such a one uttered] that which was a lie. (TA.) خَرِيمٌ One who cares not for what he does nor for what is said to him. (K.) الخُرَّمِيَّةُ The sect who held the doctrine of the transmigration of the soul, and allowed general license: (S, K, TA:) they were in the time of El-Moatasim: their sheykh, Bábak [El-Khurramee, i. e. of Khurram, in Persia], was then slain, and they scattered themselves in the countries; and there remains of them a remnant in the mountains of Syria. (TA.) خُرَّامٌ [a pl. of which the sing. is not mentioned,] Young men (TA) such as follow the licentious ways of the خُرَّمِيَّة [so I render ↓ مُتَخَرِّمُونَ] in acts of disobedience. (K, TA.) [See what next follows.]

خَارِمٌ [act. part. n. of خَرَمَ: fem. with ة; and pl. of the latter خَوَارِمُ]. One says, خَرَمَتْهُ خَوَارِمُ [explained above]: see 1. (TA.) b2: Corrupting; acting corruptly; doing evil, or mischief. (K.) [See خُرَّامٌ, which is probably a pl. thereof.] b3: Neglecting; or leaving undone [what ought to be done]. (K.) A2: Cold, as an epithet (K.) b2: A cold wind: (K:) so accord. to A'Obeyd: but accord. to Kr, [خَازِمٌ,] with زاى. (TA.) خَوْرَمٌ: see what next follows.

خَوْرَمَةٌ The end, or tip, of the nose (JK, S) of a man: (S:) or the fore part of the nose: or the part between the nostrils. (K.) b2: Also, (JK, K,) as being likened thereto, (TA,) (assumed tropical:) A rock in which are holes; (JK, K;) n. un. of ↓ خَوْرَمٌ: (K:) [or] the latter has this signification. (S. [But this seems to be a mistake.]) أَخْرَمُ [Having the nose mutilated in any of the manners explained in the first paragraph of this art.]: fem. خَرْمَآءُ: see 1, in three places. b2: and Having the ear perforated, when it is not slit: (S:) or having the ear slit after it has been pierced: (S and Msb* and TA in art. خرب:) and ↓مُخَرَّمٌ, likewise, signifies having the ear slit; as also أَخْرَبُ and مُخَرَّبٌ. (TA in that art.) And the fem., applied to a she-goat, Having her ear slit crosswise. (K. [See also خَذْمَآءُ.]) Also, the fem., applied to an ear, Slit, or perforated, or mutilated. (K, * TA.) A2: Also A pool of water left by a torrent; because one part thereof passes a way (↓ يَنْخَرِمُ) to another: pl. خُرْمٌ. (TA.) b2: And the fem. also signifies Any hill, or rising ground, sloping down into a [hollow such as is termed] وَهْدَة; (K;) and so the masc.: (TA:) or any [hill such as is termed] أَكَمَة having a side whereby it cannot be ascended. (K.) A3: أَخْرَمُ الكَتِفِ The extremity of the spine of the scapula: (S:) or a notch, or small hollowed place, [app. the glenoid cavity,] at the extremity of the spine of the scapula, (JK, T, TA,) next the socket: (T, TA:) pl. أَخَارِمُ: (JK, T, TA:) or أَخْرَمَا الكَتِفَيْنِ, in the K miswritten آخِرُ مَا فِى الكَتَِفَيْنِ, signifies the heads of the two scapulæ, next the upper arms: (K, * TA:) or the two extremities, or edges, of the lower portion of the two scapulæ, which surround, or border, the كُعْبُرَة [app. here meaning the thick part next to the inferior angle] of the scapula: and الأَخْرَمُ the end of the spine [of the scapula]. (K, * TA. [In the K is here added, accord. to different copies, حَيْثُ يَنْخَدِعُ, as in the TA; or حيث يَنْخَدِمُ, as in the CK; or حيث يَنْخَذِمُ: the right reading seems to be حَيْثُ يَنْخَرِمُ, where it forms a kind of cleft; app. meaning where it forms the glenoid cavity. In the CK, for مُنْقَطَعُ العَيْرِ, is erroneously put مُنْقَطِعُ العَيْنِ; and و is erroneously prefixed to the former noun.]) b2: الأَخْرَمَانِ Two cleft bones at the extremity of the interior of the upper part of the inside of the mouth. (K.) A4: أَخْرَمُ الرَّأْىِ (tropical:) A man weak in judgment. (JK, TA.) مَخْرِمٌ The end of a prominence, or projecting part, of a mountain: pl. مَخَارِمُ: (S:) or مَخْرِمُ جَبَلٍ signifies the prominence, or projecting part, of a mountain: [like خَرْمٌ:] and مَخْرِمُ سَيْلٍ, the extremity of a torrent: (K: [accord. to the TK, of a sword; for مخرم السيف is there put in the place of مخرم السِيل:]) pl. as above: (TA:) and مَخْرِمُ أَكَمَةٍ and اكمةٍ ↓ خُرْمُ signify the place where a hill such as is termed اكمة ends. (K.) Also A [road such as is termed] ثَنِيَّة, between two mountains: (TA:) [or the pl.] مَخَارِمُ signifies the mouths of [mountain-roads such as are termed]

فِجَاج: (S:) or roads in rugged tracts: (Skr, K:) or roads in mountains, and in sands. (IAth, TA.) [Hence,] يَمِينٌ ذَاتُ مَخَارِمَ (tropical:) An oath in which are ways of evasion. (S, TA.) and لَا خَيْرَ فِى يَمِينٍ لَا مَخَارِمَ لَهَا (tropical:) There is no good in an oath that has not ways of evasion: from مَخْرِمٌ signifying “ a ثَنِيَّة between two mountains. ” (TA.) And هٰذِهِ يَمِينٌ قَدْ طَلَعَتْ فِى

المَخَارِمِ (tropical:) [This is an oath that has come forth in expressions that admit of ways of evasion]: said of an oath that affords a way [or rather ways] of evasion to the utterer thereof. (Az, TA.) b2: [The pl.] المَخَارِمُ [or مَخَارِمُ اللَّيْلِ] also signifies The first portions of the night. (K.) It occurs in an instance in which some read المَحَارِمُ [pl. of مَحْرَمٌ, q. v.]. (TA.) مُخّرَّمٌ: see أَخْرَمُ. It is said in a trad., نَهَى أَنْ يُضَحَّى بِالمُخَرَّمَةِ الأُذُنِ He forbade the sacrificing as an أُضْحِيَّة [q. v.] the animal having the ear cut, or cut off, or mutilated: or having many perforations, and slits, in its ear. صنع

1 صَنَعَ الشَّىْءَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. صُنْعٌ and صَنْعٌ, He made, wrought, manufactured, fabricated, or constructed, the thing; syn. عَمِلَهُ: (K:) [or he made it, &c., skilfully, or well; for] الصُّنْعُ signifies إِجَادَةُ الفِعْلِ; and every صُنْع is a فِعْل, but every فِعْل is not a صُنْع; and it is not predicated of [irrational] animals [unless tropically, (see أَصْنَعُ,)] nor of inanimate things, like as الفِعْلُ is. (Er-Rághib, TA.) b2: [Hence,] صَنَعَ signifies also (assumed tropical:) [He fabricated speech or a saying or sentence or the like:] he forged a word; and poetry, عَلَى

فُلَانٍ in the name of such a one. (Mz, 8th نوع.) b3: And صَنَعَ, inf. n. صَنْعٌ [and صُنْعٌ] and صَنِيعٌ, [with the objective complement understood,] He worked, or wrought; he practised, or exercised, an art, a craft, or a manufacture. (K.) b5: And صَنَعْتُ فَرَسِى, inf. n. صَنْعٌ and صَنْعَةٌ, (tropical:) I tended well my horse; or took good care of him; (S, O, K, TA;) supplied him with fodder, and fattened him: and صَنَعَ جَارِيَتَهُ (tropical:) he reared, or nourished, his girl, or young woman: (TA:) and صُنِعَتِ الجَارِيَةُ (tropical:) the girl, or young woman, was treated [or nourished] well, so that she became fat; as also ↓ صُنِّعَت, inf. n. تَصْنِيعٌ: (K, TA:) or you say اِصْنَعِ الفَرَسَ, (so accord. to my MS. copy of the K,) or الفَرَسَ ↓ أَصْنَعَ, (so accord. to other copies of the K, and in the O, [in the CK اُصْنِعَ الفَرَسُ,]) without teshdeed; [which seems to indicate that the right reading is صَنَعَ, agreeably with the reading in my MS. copy of the K which gives the imperative form; though it is stated in the TA that أَصْنَعَ الفَرَسَ is said by IKtt to be a dial. var. of صَنَعَهُ;] (O, K;) and الجَارِيَةَ ↓ صَنَّعَ, with teshdeed, meaning he treated [or nourished] well the girl, or young woman, and fattened her; (O, K; [in my MS. copy of the K صَنِّعِ الجَارِيَةَ;]) because the تصنيع of the girl, or young woman, is by means of many things, and by careful tending: (O, K:) so says Lth: (O:) but Az says that by other, or others, than Lth, it is allowed to say صَنَعَ جَارِيَتَهُ, without teshdeed: and hence the phrase in the Kur [xx. 40.], وَلِتُصْنَعَ عَلَى عَيْنِى, (TA,) meaning (assumed tropical:) [And this I did] that thou mightest be reared and nourished in my sight; (O, TA;) for which some read وَلِْتُصْنَعْ, as an imperative; and some, وَلِتَصْنَعَ, meaning and that thou mightest work in my sight, (Ksh, Bd,) lest thou shouldst do so contrary to my command. (Bd.) You say likewise, of a woman, صَنَعَتْ نَفْسَهَا: see 5. And you say also ↓ اِصْطَنَعْتُهُ, meaning (tropical:) I reared him; and educated, disciplined, or trained, him well. (S, * O, K, TA.) A2: Accord. to IDrst, صَنِعَ, inf. n. صَنَعٌ, signifies He was, or became, skilled, or skilful: but IB says that صَنِعَ has not been heard. (TA.) 2 صَنَّعَ see 1, latter half, in two places.3 مُصَانَعَةٌ primarily signifies The doing to one a thing in order that he may do another thing to the doer of the former thing. (TA.) b2: Hence, (TA,) (assumed tropical:) The treating with gentleness, or blandishment; soothing, coaxing, wheedling, or cajoling; and endeavouring to conciliate. (O, K, TA.) Or this is from the last of the following significations. (TA.) You say صانعهُ (assumed tropical:) He treated him with gentleness, or blandishment; &c. (O, TA.) and (assumed tropical:) He acted hypocritically with him. (TA.) and صانعهُ عَنِ الشَّىْءِ (assumed tropical:) He strove, or endeavoured, to turn him from the thing by deceit, or guile. (TA.) b3: And hence, (A, TA,) or from the last signification in this paragraph, (TA,) (tropical:) The act of bribing. (S, O, Msb, * K, * TA.) One says, صانع الوَالِىَ (tropical:) He bribed [the prefect, ruler, judge, or the like]. (TA.) And صانعهُ بِالمَالِ (tropical:) He bribed him with property, wealth, or money. (Mgh, TA. *) And it is said in a prov., مَنْ صَانَعَ بِالمَالِ لَمْ يَحْتَشِمْ مِنْ طَلَبِ الحَاجَةِ (tropical:) [He who bribes with property is not ashamed of demanding the thing wanted]. (S, O, TA.) b4: Also (tropical:) A horse's not putting forth, or giving, the whole of his strength in going; reserving somewhat thereof: one says, يُصَانِعُكَ بِبَذْلِهِ سَيْرَهُ (tropical:) [He keeps back from thee somewhat by the manner in which he exerts his power of going]. (O, K, TA.) 4 اصنع He (a man, O) aided, or assisted, another. (O, K.) And accord. to Ibn-'Abbád, followed in the O and TS and K, one says also, اصنع الأَخْرَقُ, meaning The unskilful learned, and did soundly, thoroughly, skilfully, or well: but this is a mistake, occasioned by his deeming dubious, or obscure, a passage in the Nawádir of IAar, where the latter says that اصنع الرَّجُلُ means أَعَانَ الأَخْرَقَ [i. e. The man aided, or assisted, the unskilful]. (TA.) A2: اصنع الفَرَسَ: see 1, latter half. [Freytag states, as on the authority of the K, that أَصْنَعَ, said of a horse, signifies “ Non omnibus viribus usus cucurrit, sed ita tamen ut eques eo contentus esset ” (which is nearly the same as a signification of صَانَعَ likewise mentioned by him): but this is a mistake.]5 تَصَنُّعٌ signifies The affecting a goodly way, mode, or manner, of acting, or conduct, or the like; (S, O, K, TA; [الصَّمْت in the CK is a mistranscription for السَّمْت;]) and the making a show thereof; (TA;) and the adorning oneself (K, TA) thereby, while internally unsound in the grounds of pretension to respect. (TA.) And تصنّعت, said of a woman, means نَفْسَهَا ↓ صَنَعَتْ [She cultivated and improved her person, so as to render herself comely, by art, and good nurture]: (S, O:) or she adorned, or embellished, herself. (PS.) 8 إِصْتَنَعَ see 1, former half. b2: Accord. to Er-Rághib, اِصْطِنَاعٌ signifies The exceeding the usual, or ordinary, bounds, or degree, in putting a thing into a good, sound, right, or proper, state. (TA.) b3: And hence, he says, the phrase in the Kur [xx. 43], وَاصْطَنَعْتُكَ لِنَفْسِى, which means (assumed tropical:) And I have chosen thee [for myself] to establish my evidence and to serve as my spokesman between me and my creatures so that thy doing thus shall be as though I did it: (TA:) or it means I have reared thee, (Az, TA,) or I have chosen thee, (O, K, TA,) [for myself,] for a special affair which I require thee to accomplish in a sufficient manner, (Az, O, K, TA,) concerning Pharaoh and his forces. (Az, TA.) See also 1, last sentence but one. b4: One says also, اصطنع خَاتَمًا He ordered that a signet-ring should be made for him. (O, K.) [See also 10.]

b5: And اصطنعهُ [in which the pronoun seems to refer to رِزْق i. e. sustenance, &c.,] also signifies قَدَّمَهُ [app. meaning He offered it]. (TA.) b6: And اصطنع [alone, for اصطنع مَصْنَعَةً,] (tropical:) He made, or prepared, a repast, feast, or banquet, to which to invite friends. (O, K, TA.) and (tropical:) He prepared food to be dispensed in the way, or cause, of God. (O and TA, from a trad.; mentioned also in the CK, but not in other copies of the K.) 10 استصنعهُ, accord. to the O, signifies He asked for it to be made for him: accord. to the L, استصنع الشَّىْءَ signifies he invited, or he induced, or caused (دَعَا,) [another] to make the thing. (TA.) In the saying of Es-Sarakhsee, اِسْتَصْنَعَ عِنْدَ الرَّجُلِ قَلَنْسُوَةً [app. meaning He asked, or desired, the man to make for him a قلنسوة (q. v.)], عند is redundant. (Mgh.) [See also 8.]

A2: Also, and ↓ صَوْنَعٌ, A certain small creeping thing, or insect, (دُوَيْبَّةٌ,) or a flying thing (طَائِرٌ): (K, TA:) mentioned by Sgh: (TA:) also written in the K (in art. ضتع) ضَتْعٌ and ضَوْتَعٌ: in one case or the other mistranscribed. (TA in art. ضتع.) صُنْعٌ an inf. n. of صَنَعَ [q. v.] (S, K, &c.) b2: And i. q. رِزْقٌ [Sustenance, &c.]. (TA.) A2: See also صَنَعٌ, in two places.

صِنْعٌ A tailor: (O, K:) or one who is gentle, delicate, or skilful, (رَفِيق, O,) or thin, fine, or delicate, (رَقِيق, so in the copies of the K,) or slender, or small, (دَقِيق, so in the TA,) [of which readings that in the O is app. the right,] in respect of the hands. (O, K.) See also صَنَعٌ, in five places.

A2: Also A ↓ مَصْنَعَة of water; (O, K, TA;) i. e. a piece of wood [app. a plank or board] by means of which water is confined, and retained for a while: (TA:) pl. أَصْنَاعٌ: (O, K:) [but this explanation in the TA seems to have been founded upon a statement there made, that Az heard the Arabs call أَحْبَاس of water أَصْنَاع; (see حِبْسٌ, of which احباس is the pl.;) for I do not find ↓ مَصْنَعَةٌ thus expl. in any lexicon except the TA:] and ↓ صَنَّاعَةٌ, with teshdeed, and ↓ صَنَاعٌ, (O, K,) like سَحَابٌ, (K,) accord. to Lth, (O,) signify pieces of wood [or planks or boards] put together in water, to confine the water, and retain it for a while; (O, K;) like the حِبَاسَة [q. v.]. El-Marrár El-Fak'asee says, describing camels, وَجَآءَتْ وَرُكْبَانُهَا كَالشُّرُوبِ وَسَائِقُهَا مِثْلُ صِنْعِ الشِّوَآء

[And they came, their riders being like drinkers, or drunkards, and their driver like the سَفُّود of roasted flesh-meat]. (O.) In the L, السود is put in the place of السفّود; and after citing the verse above, [and app. reading مِثْلَ, regarding it as relating to the camels,] the author says that the poet means, سُودَ الأَلْوَانِ. (TA.) b7: And Roasted flesh-meat [itself]; syn. شِوَآءٌ. (So in copies of the K. [SM says that the right reading, as the explanation of الصِّنْعُ in this instance, is الشَّوَا; and cites IAar as saying الصِّنْعُ الشَّوَا نَفْسُهُ: but I think that the right reading is indicated by the addition نَفْسُهُ to be الشِّوَآءُ; and that IAar gives this signification after mentioning that which here next precedes it.]) رَجُلٌ صَنَعٌ, (Mgh, L, Msb,) and رَجُلٌ صَنَعُ اليَدَيْنِ, (S, Mgh, O, Msb, K,) and صَنَعُ اليَدِ, (Th, TA,) and اليَدَيْنِ ↓ صِنْعُ, (S, O, K,) and اليَدِ ↓ صِنْعُ, (TA,) and اليَدِ ↓ صُنْعُ, (IB, TA,) and Sh is related to have said, ↓ رَجُلٌ صَنْعٌ, (TA,) and اليَدَيْنِ ↓ صَنِيعُ, (S, O, K,) and اليَدِ ↓ صَنِيعُ, (TA,) and اليَدَيْنِ ↓ صَنَاعُ, (K,) and اليَدِ ↓ صَنَاعُ, but not صَنَاعٌ alone when applied to a male, (TA,) A man skilful in the work of the hands or hand: (S, Mgh, O, Msb, K, TA:) and a company of men you term الأَيْدِى ↓ قَوْمٌ صُنْعَى and ↓ صُنُعَى

الأَيْدِى, and الأَيْدِى ↓ صَنَعَى, and الأَيْدِى ↓ صِنْعَى, (K,) [all of which are instances of quasi-pl. ns., except, perhaps, the last, which is said in the TA to be a pl. of ↓ صِنْع,] and أَصْنَاعُ الأَيْدِى, (K, [in the CK, erroneously, اَصْنَاعِى,]) which is pl. of اليَدِ ↓ صِنْعُ or of اليَدِ ↓ صَنِيعُ, or, accord. to Sh, as IB says, the only pl. of ↓ صِنْعٌ is صِنْعُونَ, and in like manner in the case of ↓ صُنْع you say صُنْعُو اليَدِ, (TA,) and رِجَالٌ صُنُعٌ is mentioned as on the authority of Sb, (K,) and Sh is related to have said قَوْمٌ صَنْعُونَ, [using the latter word as pl. of ↓ صَنْعٌ,] with the ن quiescent. (TA.) And you say ↓ اِمْرَأَةٌ صَنَاعٌ, (ISk, Mgh, Msb, TA,) and اليَدَيْنِ ↓ صَنَاعُ, (S, O, K,) and اليَدِ ↓ صَنَاعُ, (IJ, TA,) an instance of an epithet applied to a woman like كَعَابٌ and رَدَاحٌ and حَصَانٌ, (TA,) the ا of prolongation before the final letter resembling, and rendering needless, the ة in صَنَعَةٌ, (IJ, TA,) which is not allowable, (IJ, * Mgh, Msb, TA, *) though an instance of it occurs used on the ground of analogy: (Mgh:) A woman skilful in the work of the hands or hand; (ISk, S, O, K, TA;) who makes things in a suitable manner; who sews, and cuts out or makes, leathern buckets; (ISk, TA;) contr. of خَرْقَآءُ; (Mgh, Msb;) and ↓ اِمْرَأَةٌ صَنِيعَةٌ signifies the same: (TA:) and اِمْرَأَتَانِ صَنَاعَانِ: and نِسْوَةٌ صُنُعٌ. (S, O, K.) Th preferred صَنَعُ اليَدِ as applied to a man; and اليَدِ ↓ صَنَاعُ as applied to a woman. (IB, TA.) Accord. to IDrst, صَنَعٌ is an inf. n. used as an epithet. (TA. [But see 1, last sentence.]) It is said in a prov., ثَلَّةً ↓ لَا تَعْدَمُ صَنَاعٌ [expl. in art. ثل]. (TA.) b2: [Hence,] one says of a poet, and of any one who is eloquent, رَجُلٌ صَنَعُ الِلّسَانِ (tropical:) [A man skilful in the use of the tongue]: and in like manner, لِسَانٌ صَنَعٌ (tropical:) [a skilful tongue]. (K, TA.) And اللِّسَانِ ↓ اِمْرَأَةٌ صَنَاعُ (assumed tropical:) A woman sharp-tongued: or long-tongued: syn. سَلِيطَة. (TA.) صَنِعٌ: see صَنِيعٌ, last sentence.

صَنْعَةٌ Work or handiwork, an art, a craft or handicraft, or a trade; (KL;) as also ↓ صِنَاعَةٌ: (KL, PS:) any habitual work or occupation of a man; as also حِرْفَةٌ; (K in art. حرف;) [and so ↓ صِنَاعَةٌ, as is indicated in the K voce حِرْفَةٌ; whence] one says, صِنَاعَتُهُ رِعَايَةُ الإِبِلِ [His habitual work or occupation, or his business, is the tending, or pasturing, of camels]: (M, and K in art. رعى:) or صَنْعَةٌ [more particularly] signifies the work of the صَانِع; (S, O, K;) [a manufacture, or work of art; and workmanship, or the skill of a worker, which last meaning is plainly indicated in the O, and by common usage:] and ↓ صِنَاعَةٌ, the حِرْفَة [i. e. craft, or habitual work or occupation,] of the صَانِع, (S, Mgh, O, Msb, * K,) meaning of him who works with his hand: (Mgh:) the pl. of ↓ صِنَاعَةٌ is [صَنَائِعُ and] صِنَاعَاتٌ. (KL.) b2: It is also an inf. n. of 1 as used in the phrase صَنَعْتُ فَرَسِى [q. v.]. (S, O, K, TA.) أَسْهُمٌ صُنْعَةٌ, with damm, Arrows that are equal, equable, uniform, or even, the work of one man. (TA.) [Perhaps صُنْعَةٌ is a quasi-pl. n. of صَنِيعٌ applied to an arrow.]

صُنُوعٌ in a sense in which it is used in a verse of Aboo-Dhu-eyb is a pl. of which ISd says, “I know not any sing. thereof: ” accord. to Skr, it means The خُرَز [app. either the seams or the stitch-holes] of a مَزَادَة or of an إِدَاوَة: or, as some say, the thongs used in the sewing thereof: and some say the making thereof, so that in this case it is an inf. n. (TA.) صَنِيعٌ an inf. n. of 1 [q. v.]. (MA.) b2: and i. q. ↓ مَصْنُوعٌ [meaning Made, wrought, manufactured, fabricated, or constructed: or made, &c., skilfully, or well: see 1, first sentence]. (TA.) b3: [Hence,] (tropical:) Food (O, K, TA) that is made, or prepared, and to which people are invited; (TA;) and ↓ مَصْنَعَةٌ signifies [the same, i. e.] (tropical:) a repast, feast, or banquet, to which friends are invited: (O, K, TA:) one says, كُنْتُ فِى صَنِيعِ فُلَانٍ (tropical:) I was at the repast of such a one, made, or prepared, by him, to which people were invited: and ↓ المَصْنَعَةِ (tropical:) the repast to which friends were invited. (A, L, TA.) b7: And A deed, or an action; (S, O, K, KL;) and so ↓ صَنِيعَةٌ: (Ham p. 198:) one says, صَنَعَ بِهِ صَنِيعًا قَبِيحًا He did to him an evil, or a foul, deed: (S, O, K:) and ↓ سُوْءُ صَنِيعَةٍ means The evil [consequence] of a deed. (Ham ubi suprà.) and [particularly] A good deed, a benefit, favour, or kind act; (O, K, TA;) and so ↓ صَنِيعَةٌ: (S, * O, Msb, K:) [see a verse cited voce مَصْنَعٌ:] pl. [of either, of the latter agreeably with rule,] صَنَائِعُ. (O, K.) A2: Also Skilful in work of the hands or hand: (S, O, K, TA:) fem. [in this sense] with ة. (TA.) See صَنَعٌ, in four places. Accord. to IDrst, ↓ صَنِعٌ [likewise] signifies Skilled, or skilful, as part. n. of صَنِعَ; but IB says that صَنِعَ has not been heard. (TA.) صِنَاعَةٌ: see صَنْعَةٌ, in four places. The saying of 'Alee, يُؤْخَذُ مِنْ كُلِّ صِنَاعَةٍ صِنَاعَتُهُ, if correctly related, means يُؤْخَذُ مِنْ كُلِّ ذِى صِنَاعَةٍ مَصْنُوعُهُ [From every one possessing skill in manufacture should be taken, or procured, that which he has manufactured: or perhaps مِنْ is a mistake for عَنْ, and the meaning is, from every craftsman is to be acquired his craft]. (Mgh.) صَنِيعَةٌ: see صَنِيعٌ, latter half, in four places.

صَنَاعِيَةٌ Persons who tend their camels well, and fatten the young ones thereof, and give not their camels' milk to guests: occurring in a verse of 'Ámir Ibn-Et-Tufeyl. (TA, in this art. and in art. صلمع.) صَنَائِعِىٌّ: see صَانِعٌ.

صَنَّاعٌ [An expert صَانِع i. e. manufacturer &c.] (TA. [There mentioned only as a proper name, or surname.]) صَنَّاعَةٌ: see صِنْعٌ, former half.

صَانِعٌ A handicraftsman; manufacturer; or worker, or maker, with his hand; (S, * Mgh, O, * Msb, * K;) or one having a صَنْعَة [i. e. craft &c.] which he exercises; (TA;) [an artificer, or artisan;] and ↓ صَنَائِعِىٌّ is [used in the same sense, and particularly as meaning one who works for hire under a master; being] a rel. n. from صَنَائِعُ [pl. of صِنَاعَةٌ], like أَنْمَاطِىٌّ and أَنْصَارِىٌّ: (TA:) the pl. of صَانِعٌ is صُنَّاعٌ. (Msb, TA.) صَوْنَعٌ: see صَنْعٌ.

أَصْنَعُ [More, or most, skilled in working with the hands, manufacturing, fabricating, or constructing]. See an ex. voce سُرْفَةٌ, and another voce تَنَوُّطٌ.

مَصْنَعٌ [may be sued, agreeably with analogy, as an inf. n.: and as a n. of place, and of time]. A poet says, إِنَّ الصَّنِيعَةَ لا تَكُونُ صَنِيعَةً

حَتَّى يُصَابَ بِهَا طَرِيقُ المَصْنَعِ [which may be rendered Verily that which is a good deed considered abstractedly, or without relation to the manner or object &c., will not be a good deed in effect except, or unless, the way of the doing, or the way that leads to the place (here meaning the object) of the doing, be rightly hit upon therewith]. (O, TA.) b2: In the following verse of Náfi' Ibn-Lakeet, (TA in this art. and in art. ريش,) wrongly ascribed by J [in arts.

ريش and مرط] to Lebeed, (TA in art. ريش,) and ascribed by others to other poets, (TA in art. مرط,) it is expl. by IAar as signifying A place that is deemed goodly [in workmanship]; syn. مُسْتَمْلَحٌ [a n. of place, accord. to a general rule, as well as pass. part. n.: or مَصْنَعٌ may be here more literally rendered a place of skilful workmanship]: the poet says, مُرُطُ القِذَاذِ فَلَيْسَ فِيهِ مَصْنَعٌ لَا الرِّيشُ يَنْفَعُهُ وَلَا التَّعْقِيبُ (TA in the present art.) meaning Having no feathers upon it, [and having in it no place exhibiting skilful workmanship, neither the feathers being of use to it] nor the binding around with sinews. (TA in art. ريش.) b3: See also what here follows.

مَصْنَعَةٌ (S, Mgh, O, Msb, K) and مَصْنُعَةٌ (S, O, K) and ↓ مَصْنَعٌ (O, Msb, K) [A kind of tank, or reservoir, for rain-water; i. e.] a thing like a حَوْض, (S, Mgh, O, K, TA,) or like a صِهْرِيج (Msb, TA) and a بِرْكَة, (Msb,) that is made, or constructed, (Mgh, Msb,) for collecting the water of the rain: (S, Mgh, O, Msb, K, TA:) pl. مَصَانِعُ, (O, Msb, K, TA,) a pl. of all the three words above, expl. by As as meaning excavations which people make for the rain-water, which they fill therewith, and from which they drink; and مَصَانِيعُ is another pl. of مَصْنَعَةٌ, the ى being inserted by poetic license; or it may be pl. of ↓ مَصْنُوعٌ or مَصْنُوعَةٌ: and ↓ صِنْعٌ [in like manner] signifies a حَوْض or a thing like a صِهْرِيج: and صُنُوعٌ is said to be a pl. thereof: (TA:) or صِنْعٌ signifies a watering-trough, or tank, made for the rain-water, and not cased with baked bricks; and its pl. is أَصْنَاعٌ. (TA voce بِرْكَةٌ.) See also صِنْعٌ, in two places. b2: [The pl.] مَصَانِعُ signifies also Constructions such as قُصُور [or pavilions, &c.], (O, K,) and fortresses; (S, O, K;) and ↓ صِنْعٌ also signifies a fortress: and the former, wells also. 1 فَسَا, (aor. ـْ Msb,) inf. n. فَسْوٌ (S, M, Msb, K) and فُسَآءٌ, (M, K,) or this latter is a simple subst., (S, Msb,) He emitted a noiseless wind [or a puff of wind] (Msb, K, TA) from his anus. (K, * TA.) [Hence the saying, فَسَابَيْنَنَا الظَّرِبَانُ, or بَيْنَهُم, expl. in art. ظرب.]6 تفاسى, said of a man, He protruded his posteriors: (M, TA:) and تَفَاسَتْ, said of the [beetle called] خُنْفَسَآء, It protruded its podex for the purpose of emitting a noiseless wind: (S, TA:) but As says that it is with hemz. فَسْوَةٌ [is the inf. n. of unity of فَسَا, as such signifying A single noiseless emission of wind from the anus: and] has for its pl. [فَسَوَاتٌ, agreeably with rule, and also] فُسًى, which is [anomalous,] like شُهًى pl. of شَهْوَةٌ, which see. (TA.) b2: لَيْسَ لَهُ إِلَّا فَسْوَةُ الضَّبُعِ [the lit. signification of which is sufficiently plain] occurs in a trad. as meaning (assumed tropical:) There is not any benefit, or profit, or utility, attributable to it; [or rather, it is worse than useless;] the ضبع [or hyena] being particularized because of its stupidity and its evil nature: or, some say, it [i. e.

الفَاسِيَةُ (S, M, K) and ↓ الفَاسِيَآءُ (M, K) and ↓ الفَسَّآءَةُ (TA) The [beetle called] خُنْفَسَآء; (S, M, K;) which emits a noiseless wind, and makes the party to stink by its foul odour: (M:) the pl. of the first is الفَوَاسِى. (TA.) Hence the prov., أَفْحَشُ مِنْ فَاسِيَةٍ i. e. [More foul than] a خنفساء. أَفْسَى مِنَ الظَّرِبَانِ [More wont to emit noiseless wind from the anus than the ظربان, a small stinking beast, described in art. ظرب,] is a saying of the Arabs. (TA.) المَفْسَى The anus [as being the place of emission of the فُسَآء]. (TA.) مَا أَقْرَبَ مَحْسَاهُ مِنْ مَفْسَاهُ [How near is his mouth to his anus!] is a prov. 1 فَصَّهُ, [aor., accord. to rule, فَصُّ, and inf. n., accord. to Golius, فَصٌّ,] (tropical:) He separated it from (مِنْ) another thing; (S, A, K;) as also ↓ افتصّهُ: (S, K:) and he pulled it out, or up, or off; or removed it; or displaced it; from another thing; (S, K;) as also ↓ the latter. (S.) A2: فَصَّ, inf. n. فَصَصٌ: see 7.

فَصَصٌ is syn, with اِنْفِرَاجٌ. (TA.) And [hence,] (assumed tropical:) He got out of or from (من) a thing, and severed himself therefrom. (Mtr, in De Sacy's Chrest. Arabe, 2nd ed., tome iii., p. 232.) And انْفَصَصْتُ عَنِ الكَلَامِ means اِنْفَرَجْتُ [i. e., app., I broke off from, or intermitted, speaking]. فُصُوصٌ: (S, M, A, Msb:) or, as some say, contradicting Az, the فصوص are the بَرَاجِم and the سُلَامَيَات: [see these two words:] (Sh, TA:) and ISh says, in the “ Book of Horses,” that the فصوص of the horse are the joints of the knee and pasterns, in which latter are the سُلَامَيَات, these being the bones of the pasterns. (TA.) One says of a horse, إِنَّ فُصُوصَهُ لَظِمَآءٌ (tropical:) Verily his joints are hard; not flabby nor fleshy. (S, A.) [and hence, app., from the place in which it is mentioned by Z in this art., the saying,] فُلَانٌ حَزَّازُ الفُصُوصِ [in a copy of the A, حَزَّارُ; and in the TA, ضرار; but I have no doubt that the right reading is that which I have given; lit., Such a one is the great cutter of joints;] meaning, (tropical:) Such a one is often right in his judgment, or opinion, and in his answer. Q. 2 لَا تَزَالُ تَتَسَفْسَفُ فِى هٰذَا الأَمْرِ a phrase mentioned by Ibn-'Abbád as meaning Thou wilt not cease to destroy, or bring to nought, this thing, or affair. (O, TA.) سَفْ, with the ف quiescent, i. q. سَوْفَ; as in the phrase سَفْ تَفْعَلُ [Thou wilt do such a thing]: mentioned by Th. (M. [See art. سوف; and see also the letter س.]) سَفٌّ, accord. to the K, or ↓ سِفٌّ, with kesr, accord. to Sgh, [in the O,] (TA,) A spadix, or a spathe, (طَلْعَة) of a male palm-tree. سِفٌّ and ↓ سُفٌّ, (O, K,) or the former and ↓ سَفٌّ, (so in a copy of the M,) The serpent called أَرْقَم: (AA, O, K:) or the serpent that flies (M, O, K) in the air: (M, O:) and sometimes peculiarly applied to the أَرْقَم: (M:) or the male serpent. (O.) And the Hudhalee poet EdDákhil Ibn-Harám uses the first of these words as meaning (assumed tropical:) A man like a سِفّ. (M.) b2: See also سَفٌّ.

سَفَّةٌ [an inf. n. un.]: see 1.

سُفَّةٌ A plait of palm-leaves, (M, K, TA,) i. e. a ↓ سَفِيفَة, (TA,) made according to the measure of the زَبِيل or the جُلَّة [of which it is to form a part]. (K, TA.) b2: And A thing of the kind termed قَرَامِلُ [pl. of قِرْمِلٌ], (K, TA,) [i. e. a plait] of [goat's] hair, or of wool, (TA,) which a woman attaches to her [plaits of] hair: it was not disapproved by Ibráheem En-Nakha'ee; (K, TA;) though he disapproved of other things attached to the hair: IAth explains it as a thing that a woman puts upon her head, and attaches to her hair in order that it may be lengthened [thereby]. (TA.) A2: A small portion, (حَبَّةٌ,) and (S) a handful, (S, K,) of meal of parched barley or wheat, (S,) or of wheat, and the like. (K.) b2: See also what next follows.

سَفُوفٌ Medicine, (S, M, Msb, K,) and meal of parched barley or wheat, (S, M,) and the like of either of these, (M,) or anything dry, (Msb,) taken [into the mouth], (S, M, * K,) or eaten, (Msb,) not moistened, (S, M, * Msb, K,) or not kneaded [with water &c.]; (S;) and ↓ سُفَّةٌ signifies the same; (M, K;) each a subst. from سَفِفْتُ السَّوِيقَ and الدَّوَآءَ &c. (M.) A2: Also Blackness of the gum. (M, TA.) سَفِيفٌ Woven [with the fingers, or plaited,] of palm-leaves. (KL.) b2: [And hence,] The girth of the رَحْل [or camel's saddle], (S, M, K,) and of the [women's vehicle called] هَوْدَج: (M:) the fore-girth of the رَحْل; because made broad, like the سَفِيف of palm-leaves. A4: And السَّفِيفُ is A name of Iblees: (O, K:) so says AA: (O:) in one or more of the copies of the “ Nawádir,” ↓ السَّفْسَفُ. (TA.) سَفِيفَةٌ A thing woven [with the fingers, or plaited,] of palm-leaves: (S, O:) a piece of woven [or plaited] work of palm-leaves (K voce عَرَقٌ) &c.: (TA ibid.:) pl. سَفَائِفُ. (TA.) See سُفَّةٌ, first sentence. b2: A wide belly-girth with which a رَحْل [or camel's saddle] is bound, or fastened. (M.) [See also سَفِيفٌ.] b3: The appertenance [or suspensory] of a water-skin (قِرْبَة), which the carrier of the قربة puts over his chest [when carrying the قربة on his back]. (K voce عَرَقٌ.) b4: See also جُمَانٌ. b5: A [receptacle for dates, such as is called] دَوْخَلَّة, [made of palmleaves,] before it is woven. (M, TA.) b6: and [the pl.] سَفَائِفُ signifies Wide ribs: or, as some say, all the ribs. (M.) سَفْسَفٌ A certain plant; (M, TA;) said by IDrd to be of the dial. of El-Yemen; that which the people of Nejd call the عَنْقَز, which is the مَرْزَنْجُوش [or marjoram]. (TA.) سَفْسَافٌ The dust of flour, that rises, (K,) or flies and rises, (TA,) at the sifting. (K, TA.) b2: The fine particles or dust: (S, Mgh, K:) or such as rises, or spreads, of dust. (M.) b3: Hence, (Mgh,) سَفْسَافُ الشِعْرِ (Mgh, K) (assumed tropical:) What is bad of poetry, (K, TA,) imperfectly, or unsoundly, done. (TA. [In the CK, الشَّعَرِ is erroneously put for الشِعْرِ; and Freytag appears to have read الشَّعِيرِ.]) سَفْسَافٌ signifies (assumed tropical:) Bad poetry: and (assumed tropical:) anything imperfectly, or unsoundly, done. (M.) Anything bad. (S, K. [Compare the Hebr.

אֲסַפְסֻף occurring with the article, and with the quiescent, in Numbers xi. 4.]) (assumed tropical:) Such as is bad of natural dispositions. (M.) And (assumed tropical:) A contemptible, or despicable, thing or affair. (S, K.) It is said in a trad., إِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُحِبُّ مَعَالِىَ الأَمُورِ وَ يُبْغِضُ سَفْسَافَهَا, (S, M, Mgh, TA,) or يَكْرَهُ سَفْسَافَهَا, (S, TA,) i. e. (assumed tropical:) [Verily God loves lofty things, or things whereby one acquires eminence or nobility, and] hates paltry, and mean, things. (Mgh, Sgh, TA.) سَفْسَافٌ signifies [also] (assumed tropical:) An action, and a saying, in which is no good. (Ham p. 232; where the foregoing trad. is cited as an ex.) And (assumed tropical:) Any bad wind: (TA:) [or] سَفْسَافَةٌ signifies a wind running a little above the ground; and so ↓ مُسَفْسِفَةٌ: (M:) or the latter, a wind that raises the fine dust, and runs a little above the ground. (S, K.) b2: حَلِفٌ سَفْسَافٌ (tropical:) A false, or lying, swearing, in which is no ratification. (TA.) سُفَاسِفٌ Vehement hunger. (Ibn-'Abbád, K.) مُسِفٌّ [act. part. n. of 4, q. v.]. b2: Anything cleaving, or sticking, to another thing. (A'Obeyd, TA.) b3: مَرَّ مُسِفًّا He passed by fleeing from his companion, running most vehemently. (Ibn-'Abbád, TA.) مُسَفْسِفَةٌ: see سَفْسَافٌ, last sentence but one.
