1 رَدَعَــهُ, aor. ـَ inf. n. رَدْعٌ, He restrained, withheld, prevented, or hindered, him; made him to restrain himself, withhold himself, refrain, forbear, or abstain; (S, Msb, K;) turned him back, repelled him, or averted him; (K;) عَنِ الشَّىْءِ from the thing. (S, Msb, K. *) b2: [Hence, app.,] رَدَعَ جَيْبَهُ عَنْهُ (assumed tropical:) He cleared his bosom, or heart, of it; syn. فَرَجَهُ, or فَرَّجَهُ; (accord. to different copies of the K;) [as though he withheld his mind from it;] meaning, grief, and perturbation; جيب being used to signify the “ bosom,” and the “ heart: ” (TK:) mentioned by Sgh. (TA.) 6 ترادع القَوْمُ The people, or company of men, restrained, withheld, prevented, or hindered, one another; made one another to restrain himself, withhold himself, refrain, forbear, or abstain; turned back, repelled, or averted, one another. 1 عَنُفَ بِهِ (S, MA, Mgh, O, Msb, K) and عَلَيْهِ, (S, Mgh, O, Msb, K,) with damm, (S, O,) like قَرُبَ, (Mgh, Msb,) or like كَرُمَ, (K,) aor. ـُ (MA, TA,) inf. n. عُنْفٌ (S, * MA, Mgh, O, * Msb, TA) and عَنَافَةٌ; (MA, Mgh, TA;) and عَنِفَ بِهِ, aor. ـَ (MA;) [and عَنَفَ, inf. n. عَنْفٌ, is mentioned as syn. with عَنُفَ by Golius and Freytag, by the latter as on the authority of the S and K, in neither of which do I find it;] He was ungentle, rough, harsh, rigorous, severe, violent, or vehement, with him, or to him: (S, MA, Mgh, O, Msb, K, TA:) hence the phrase, عَنُفَ عَلَيْهِمْ فِى السَّوْقِ [He was ungentle, rough, &c., to them in driving]: (Mgh:) and ↓ عنّفهُ and عنّف عَلَيْهِ signify the same as عَنُفَ بِهِ: (MA:) you say عَنَّفْتُهُ, inf. n. تَعْنِيفٌ; and ↓ أَعْنَفْتُهُ; (Lth, O, K;) both meaning عَنُفْتُ عَلَيْهِ; (TK; [and the same is implied in the K;]) both from العُنْفُ: (Lth, O:) or ↓ التَّعْنِيفُ signifies the upbraiding, or reproaching; and blaming, reproving, or censuring: (S, O:) you say عنّفهُ, inf. n. تَعْنِيفٌ, (Msb, K, TA,) meaning he blamed, reproved, or censured, him; (Msb;) or did so with roughness or harshness, and vehemence; (K, TA;) omitted in some of the copies of the K; (TA;) or did so in anger or displeasure; (Msb;) upbraided, or reproached, him; blamed, reproved, or censured, him with reproach. (TA.) 2 عَنَّفَ see the preceding paragraph, in two places.4 أَعْنَفَ see 1. b2: اعنف الشَّىْءَ He took the thing (أَخَذَهُ [or this may mean he took to it, or set about it,]) with violence, or vehemence. (TA.) [See also 8, in two places. b3: In Har p. 386, اعنفت الشىء is expl. as meaning ايتنفته اذا استقبلته: but in the lexicons I find only اعتنفته in this sense.]5 تعنّف is expl. by Golius as signifying Incommodè et imperitè aggressus fuit rem, et incepit; on the authority of the S: but it is اعتنف that has this, or a similar, meaning.]8 اِعْتَنَفْتُ الأَمْرَ I took to, or set about, the affair (أَخَذْتُهُ [for أَخَذْتُ فِيهِ or أَخَذْتُ أَفْعَلُهُ]) with ungentleness, roughness, violence, or vehemence. [See also 4.]) I entered into, engaged in, did, or performed, the affair, (أَتَيْتُهُ,) not having knowledge in it: (O, K, TA:) or (K) I was ignorant of the affair; (O, K, TA;) and found it troublesome, or difficult, and hard, to do; (TA;) whence the saying (O, TA) of Ru-beh, (TA,) بِأَرْبَعٍ لَا يَعْتَنِفْنَ العَنَقَا [With four legs not ignorant of the pace termed عَنَق]: (O, TA:) and [simply] I had no knowledge in the affair: (O:) and اعتنفت الشَّىْءَ I took to, or set about, the thing, (أَخَذْتُهُ [as above],) or I entered into, engaged in, did, or performed, the thing, (أَتَيْتُهُ,) not being skilled, nor having knowledge, in it. (See, again, 4.]) b2: Also [simply] I began, or commenced, the affair: (O, * K:) some of the Benoo-Temeem use the phrase [thus] in the sense of اِئْتَنَفْتُهُ: (Lth, O, TA:) an instance of العَنْعَنَةُ. See also عُنْفَة. b3: And اِعْتَنَفْنَا المَرَاعِىَ We pastured [our cattle] upon the herbage that had not been pastured upon before, of the pasturages: (O, K: but the latter has اعتنف in the place of اعتنفنا:) an instance of the عَنْعَنَة of Temeem. (O.) b4: And اعتنف المَجْلِسَ He removed from the sitting-place; (K, TA;) like اِئْتَنَفَ: (TA:) Esh-Sháfi'ee, after recommending that a man when he is drowsy in the sitting-place [in the mosque] on Friday, and finds another sitting-place without his treading therein upon any one, should remove from it, says, وَاعْتِنَافُ المَجْلِسِ مَا يَذْعَرُ عَنْهُ النَّوْمَ [i. e. and the removing from the sitting-place is a cause of scaring from him sleep]: making الاِعْتِنَافُ to be the putting himself in motion, and removing from place to place; which is like الاِئْتِنَاف [or the beginning, or commencing, anew]. (Az, O.) b5: اِعْتَنَفْتُ الطَّعَامَ I disapproved, or disliked, the food that I had eaten; (El-Báhilee, O, K, * TA;) it disagreeing with me. (Az, TA.) And اِعْتَنَفْتُ الأَرْضَ I disliked the land, (S, O, K, TA,) and deemed it insalubrious. (TA.) And اِعْتَنَفَتْنِى

البِلَادُ, (O,) or الأَرْضُ, (K,) The country, or the land, disagreed with me, or was unsuitable to me. (O, K.) b6: اعتنف الطَّرِيقُ [perhaps اُعْتُنِفَ (see the part. n.)] The road swerved from the right course. (TA.) عَنْفٌ: see the next paragraph.

A2: هُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ عَنْفًا عَنْفًا means [They go forth one after another, or] first and then first; as also ↓ عُنْفُوَانًا. (O, K.) عُنْفٌ (S, Mgh, O, K, &c.) and ↓ عَنْفٌ and ↓ عِنْفٌ [the first of which is an inf. n.] Ungentleness, roughness, harshness, rigorousness, severity, violence, or vehemence; (TA;) contr. of رِفْقٌ. (S, Mgh, O, K, TA.) It is said of God, in a trad., يُعْطِى عَلَى الرِّفْقِ مَا لَا يُعْطِى عَلَى العُنْفِ [He gives on account of gentleness in the petitioner, what He will not give on account of ungentleness]. (O.) عِنْفٌ: see the next preceding paragraph.

عُنُفٌ, with two dammehs, Roughness, and hardness: so expl. by Lh as used in the saying, فَقَذَفَتْ بِبَيْضَةٍ فِيهَا عُنُفْ [And she cast forth an egg in which were roughness and hardness]. (TA.) كَانَ ذٰلِكَ مِنَّا عُنْفَةً, and ↓ عُنُفَةً, i. q. ↓ اِعْتِنَافًا, meaning اِئْتِنَافًا [i. e. That was, on our part, a beginning, or commencing]. (Ks, O, K.) عَنَفَةٌ A thing [app. a wheel] which, being smitten [or put in motion] by water, turns a mill. (AA, O, K.) b2: And The space between two lines of corn, or seed-produce. (AA, O, K.) عُنُفَة: see عُنْفَة.

عَنِيفٌ Ungentle, [rough, harsh, rigorous, severe, violent, or vehement,] (S, Mgh, O, Msb, K, TA,) in his affair; as also ↓ عَنْفٌ and ↓ أَعْنَفُ and ↓ مُعْتَنِفٌ; (TA;) [thus] as applied to a driver; (Mgh;) [and particularly] in the riding of horses; (S, O, K;) or who does not ride well; or who is not acquainted with the riding of horses: (TA:) pl. عُنُفٌ. (S, O.) And Hard, severe, violent, or vehement, applied to a saying, (O, K,) and to journeying, or a pace. (K.) عُنْفُوٌّ: see عُنْفُوَانٌ.

عُنْفُوَةٌ Such as is dried up of the [plant called]

نَصِىّ, (TA in this art.,) or of the حَلِىّ, when it has become black, and old and withered, or wasted. (TA in art. عنث.) عُنْفُوَانٌ, (S, O, Msb, K,) of the measure فُعْلُوَانٌ from العُنْفُ, or it may be originally أُنْفُوَانٌ, having the أ then changed into ع, (TA,) or it is from اِعْتَنَفْتُ الشَّىْءَ meaning “ I began, or commenced, the thing,” (Ham p. 269,) and ↓ عُنْفُوٌّ also, (Ibn-'Abbád, TA,) The first of a thing: (S, O, Msb, K:) or the first of the beauty and brightness thereof: (Lth, O, K:) and (S, O, TA) predominantly (TA) of youth, or youthfulness, and of plants, or herbage. (S, O, TA.) You say, هُوَ فِى عُنْفُوَانِ شَبَابِهِ [He is in the prime, spring, or bloom, of his youth]. (S, O, Msb.) b2: See also عَنْفٌ. b3: عُنْفُوَانٌ also signifies The juice that flows from grapes without their being pressed. (TA.) b4: And The force, or strength, of wine. جيب

1 جَابَ, aor. ـِ see 1 in art. جوب, in two places.2 جيّب, inf. n. تَجْيِيبٌ: see 1 in art. جوب.

جَيْبٌ The طَوْق [or opening at the neck and bosom] (K) of a shirt (S, K) and the like; (K;) as, for instance, of a coat of mail: (TA:) or the opening of a shirt at the uppermost part of the breast: (Msb, MF:) or the opening in a garment for the head to be put through: or such an opening as a sleeve and a طَوْق: (MF:) pl. [of mult.]

جُيُوبٌ, (Msb, K,) also pronounced جِيُوبٌ, (TA,) [like بِيُوتٌ for بُيُوتٌ,] and [of pauc.] أَجْيَابٌ: (Msb:) this is said to be its proper art., (K, TA,) not جوب, because its pl. is جُيُوبٌ. (TA.) [The Arabs often carry things within the bosom of the shirt &c.; and hence the word is now applied by them to A pocket.] b2: (assumed tropical:) The heart; the bosom. (K.) So in the saying, هُوَ نَاصِحُ الجَيْبِ (assumed tropical:) [He is pure, or sincere, of heart or bosom]: (K:) or trusty, trustworthy, or faithful. (S. [See also art. نصح.]) A poet says, وَخَشَّنْتَ صَدْرًا جَيْبُهُ لَكَ نَاصِحُ (assumed tropical:) [And thou hast exasperated a bosom the heart of which was faithful to thee]. (TA.) You say also, هُوَ دَنِسُ الجَيْبِ (assumed tropical:) [He is a person of foul heart]. (A in art. دنس.) And رَدَعَ جَيْبَهُ عَنْهُ (assumed tropical:) He cleared his heart, or bosom, of it. (K in art. ردع q. v.) b3: جَيْبُ الأَرْضِ (assumed tropical:) The place of entrance of the land, or country: (K:) pl. جُيُوبٌ. (TA.) جِيبَةٌ: see art. جوب.

يَاقُوتٌ مُجَيَّبٌ Hollowed [sapphires]: occurring in a trad. describing the banks of the river of Paradise: but accord. to one reading, it is لُؤْلُؤٌ مُجَوَّبٌ; accord. to another, مُجَيَّبٌ or مَجَوَّفٌ; and accord. to another, مُجَيَّبٌ or مُجَوَّبٌ. (TA.)

1 دَبَجَ, aor. ـُ [or دَبِجَ, as will be shown below], (L,) inf. n. دَبْجٌ, (L, K,) [not دَبَجٌ and دَبَجَةٌ as in the Lexicons of Golius and Freytag,] He variegated, decorated, embellished, adorned, or ornamented: (L, K: *) [and so ↓ دبّج, inf. n. تَدْبِيجٌ, occurring in the TA in art. نمش; but app. in an intensive sense.] And [hence,] دَبَجَ الأَرْضَ, (A, L, Msb,) aor. ـُ (L, A) or ـِ (Msb,) inf. n. as above; (A, L, Msb;) and ↓ دَبَّجَهَا [but app. in an intensive sense]; (A;) (tropical:) It adorned the land with meadows, or gardens: (A, L:) or it watered the land, and produced various flowers. مَا بِالدَّارِ دِبِّيجٌ, (ISk, S, A,) or فِى الدَّارِ, (K,) (tropical:) There is not in the house any one: (ISk, S, A, K:) دِبِّيجٌ is not used otherwise than in a negative phrase: IJ derives it from دِيبَاجٌ; because men adorn the earth: (TA:) [Z says,] it is from دَبَجَ, like سِكِّيتٌ from سَكَتَ; because men adorn houses: (A:) Abu-l-'Abbás says that دِبِّيحٌ is more chaste than دِبِّيجٌ: (TA:) [ISk says, or J, for the passage is ambiguous,] A'Obeyd doubted respecting the ج and the ح; and I asked respecting this word, in the desert, a company of the Arabs thereof, and they said, مَا فِى الدَّارِ دِبِّىٌّ, and nothing more; but I have found in the handwriting of Aboo-Moosà El-Hámid, ما فى الدار دِبِّيجٌ, with ج, on the authority of Th: (S:) AM says that the ج in دِبِّيٌج is substituted for the [latter] ى in دِبِّىٌّ, in like manner as they say مُرِّىٌّ and مُرِّجٌّ &c. (TA.) دُبَيْبِيجٌ: see the next paragraph, near the end.

دِيبَاجٌ, (S, A, Mgh, Msb, K, &c.,) or دَيْبَاجٌ, (Th,) or both, (IAar, A'Obeyd,) the latter having been sometimes heard, (IAar,) or the latter is post-classical, (A'Obeyd,) or wrong, (Az,) a word of well-known meaning, (K,) [Silk brocade;] a certain kind of cloth, or garment, made of إِبْرِيسَم [i. e. silk, or raw silk]: (TA:) a kind of cloth, or garment, of which the warp and woof are both of ابريسم: and particularly a name for that which is variegated, decorated, or embellished: (Mgh, Msb:) a kind of woven stuff, variegated, or diversified, with colours: (Lb, TA:) [accord. to Golius, as on the authority of the S and K, in neither of which is the word explained at all, “vestis serica: imprimis picta, pec. Attalica, auro intexta:] derived from دَبَجَ: (Ks:) or it is a Pers\. word, (Kr, S, A,) arabicized; (Kr, S, A, Msb, K;) so some say, and from it دَبَجَ is derived; (Msb;) originally دِيبَاىْ, or دِيبَا; (Kr;) [or rather دِيبَاهْ, for the change of the final ه into ج in arabicized words from the Pers\. is very common;] or دِيوْ بَافْ, i. e. “ the weaving of the deevs, or jinn, or genii: ” (Shifá el-Ghaleel:) pl. دَيَابِيجُ and دَبَابِيجُ; (S, Msb, K;) the latter being from the supposed original form of the sing., i. e. دِبَّاجٌ; (S, Msb;) like دَنَانِيرُ [pl. of دِينَارٌ, which is supposed to be originally دِنَّارٌ]: and in like manner is formed the dim. A2: Also A young she-camel; one in the prime of life. (IAar, K.) دِيبَاجَةٌ (tropical:) [A proem, an introduction, or a preface, to a poem or a book; and especially one that is embellished, or composed in an ornate style]. لِهٰذِهِ القَصِيدَةِ دِيبَاجَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ (tropical:) [To this ode is a beautiful proem] is said of a قصيدة when it is embellished (مُحَبَّرَة) [in its commencement]. (A.) And one says, مَا أَحْسَنَ دِيبَاجَاتِ البُحْتُرِىِّ (tropical:) [How beautiful are the proems of l-Boh- turee!]. (A.) b2: دِيبَاجَةُ الوَجْهِ, and الوجه ↓ دِيبَاجُ, (assumed tropical:) Beauty of the skin of the face. (A, K.) 2 تَجْبِيهٌ The mounting a fornicator, or an adulterer, upon an ass, and turning his face towards the tail; whence the trad. of the Jews respecting the adulterer, يُحُمَّمُ وَيُجَبَّهُ ويُجْلَدُ [He shall have his face blackened with charcoal, and be mounted on an ass with his face towards the tail, and be flogged]: (Mgh:) or the mounting two fornicators, or adulterers, upon an ass, and turning the backs of their heads towards each other, (JK, Mgh,) and parading them round about; thus accord. to the Tekmileh: (Mgh:) or the blackening [with charcoal] the faces of two fornicators, or adulterers, (أَنْ يُحَمَّرَ in the K being a mistake for أَنْ يُحُمَّمَ, i. e. يُسَوَّدَ, TA,) and mounting them upon a camel or an ass, and turning their faces in contrary directions: accord. to analogy, it should mean turning their faces towards each other; for it is from الجَبْتَةُ: تَجْبِيهٌ also signifies the bending, inclining, lowering, or hanging down, the head towards the ground: and it may be hence; (i. e. it may be hence that it is applied to him who is mounted on a beast in the manner described above; TA;) because he to whom this is done bends down his head in shame and confusion: or it may be from جَبَهَهُ meaning "he did to him a thing disliked, or hated." (K.) 8 اِجْتِبَاهٌ The deeming [one] rude, coarse, unkind, hard, or churlish. (JK.) b2: And The fearing [a person or thing]. (JK.) b3: And اجتبههُ He disliked, or hated, and feared, it, or him; namely, a country, or town, and a man. (JK.) b4: He disapproved it, or disliked it, and did not find it wholesome; namely, water, (En-Nawádir, K,) &c. (K.) جَبَهٌ Largeness, (S,) or width (JK, M, K) and beauty, (M, K,) of the جَبْهَة [or forehead]: (JK, S, M, K:) or protuberance, or prominence, thereof. (M, K.) جَبْهَةٌ [The forehead;] the part of the face which is the place of prostration: (As, Msb, K:) or the even part that is between the eyebrows and the نَاصِيَة [or place where the hair grows in the fore part of the head]: (Kh, JK, Msb, K:) so of a man, (S, Msb,) and of others: (S:) [or,] of a horse, the part that is below the ears and above the eyes: (TA:) pl. جِبَاهٌ. (Msb, TA.) b2: [Hence,] الجَبْهَةُ (assumed tropical:) A certain Mansion of the Moon; [the Tenth Mansion;] (S, K, Kzw;) consisting of four stars; (S;) the four stars [ζ, γ, η, and α,] in the neck and heart of Leo; [regarded by the Arabs as the fore-part, or forehead, of Leo;] (Kzw in his descr. of Leo;) between each of which and the next to it is the space of a whip's length; the northernmost of them called by astrologers الأَسَدُ. (Kzw in his descr. of the Mansions of the Moon.) b3: Also (assumed tropical:) The moon (K, TA) itself: but [it rather seems to mean the upper part of the disc of the moon; for] it is said in the M that a certain unknown poet has metaphorically assigned a جبهة to the moon. (TA.) b4: Also جَبْهَةٌ, (tropical:) The chief of a people, or company of men; (JK, Mgh, K, TA;) like as one says the وَجْه thereof. (Mgh, TA.) b5: (tropical:) The generous and manly, or manly and noble, persons of a people, or company of men: or men exerting themselves in the case of a bloodwit or a debt or other obligation, (K, TA,) or in repairing the condition of a poor man, (TA,) and who come not to any one but he is ashamed to turn them back, (K, TA,) or who are seldom or never turned back by anyone: so, accord. to Aboo-Sa'eed, in a trad. in which it is said that there shall be no poor-rate in the case of the جبهة. (TA.) b6: (tropical:) A company, or collected number, of men, (JK, S, Msb,) and of horses: (JK, Msb:) or, of horses, the best: (TA:) and [simply] horses; (Lth, S, M, Mgh, K;) a word having no sing., or n. un.: (M, K:) accord. to Lth, (TA,) having this last meaning in the trad. above mentioned; (S, Mgh, TA;) because horses are the best of beasts. (Mgh.) A2: (tropical:) Abjectness, or ignominy; (JK, M, K, TA;) and a state of annoyance, or molestation: (Z, TA:) thought by ISd to be from جَبَهَهُ meaning “ he encountered him with that which he disliked or hated,” or “ he accused him thereof to his face; ” because the doing this causes one to experience abjectness, or ignominy. (TA.) It is said to have this meaning in a trad., in which it is said, فَإِنَّ اللّٰهَ قَدْ أَرَاحَكُمْ مِنَ الجَبْهَةِ والسَّجَّةِ والبَجَّةِ, i. e. For God hath relieved you from abjectness, or ignominy, &c., and milk diluted with water, and blood drawn from a vein [of a camel], which the Arabs used to eat: or in this trad., (TA,) الجَبْتَهَةُ is the name of a certain idol (ISd, K, TA) that was worshipped in the Time of Ignorance: (TA:) and السجّة and البجّة were two idols. (S and K in art. سج.) وَرَدْنَا مَآءً لَهُ جَبِيهَةٌ We came to a water that was salt, so that the drinking thereof did not take away the thirst of our cattle: (ISk, JK, S:) or that was altered for the worse in taste and colour, from some such cause as long standing, though still drinkable; or covered with the green substance called طُحْلُب and with leaves: or that was deep in the bottom, difficult to give to drink. (ISk, S.) [See also 1, last meaning but one.]

جُبَّهٌ i. q. جُبَّأٌ, (K,) i. e. A fearful, or cowardly, man. (TA.) جَابِهٌ, applied to a gazelle, (JK,) or to a bird or a wild animal, (K,) That meets one with its face or forehead; and such is of evil omen: (K:) contr. of قَعِيدٌ. (JK.) b2: Coming to water: so in a saying cited and explained in art. اذن, conj. 2. (IAar, TA.) أَجْبَهُ, applied to a man, Large, (S,) or wide (JK, M, K) and beautiful, (M, K,) in the جَبْهَة [or forehead]: (JK, S, M, K:) or protuberant, or prominent, therein: (M, K:) applied to a horse, having a protuberant, or prominent, forehead, rising beyond the bone of the nose: (TA:) fem. جَبْهَآءُ; (S, K;) of which the dim. is جُبَيْهَآءُ. (S.) b2: الأَجْبَهُ The lion; (K;) because of the width of his جَبْهَة. (TA.) جبو and جبى [The words belonging to the former of these two arts. cannot well be classed by themselves, being intimately connected with those of the latter, which are the more numerous and common, and from which they are generally easily distinguishable.]1 جَبَى, (K,) first Pers\. جَبَيْتُ, (Ks, S, Er-Rághib,) aor. ـِ (K;) and جَبَى, aor. ـَ (K,) said by MF to be unknown, and also, because neither the second nor the third radical is a faucial letter, unreasonable, but mentioned by Sb, though held by him to be of weak authority, and mentioned also by IAar, as extr., like أَبَى, aor. ـْ (TA;) and جَبَا, (TA,) first Pers\. جَبَوْتُ, (Ks, S, TA,) aor. ـُ (TA;) inf. n. [of the first and second] جَبْىٌ (Sh, K) and [probably of the last only] جَبًا and جِبًا and جُبًا and [of the last, but whether in the first or the second of the senses here following is not shown,] جِبْوَةٌ; (K; [or this last has a different application, explained below;]) He collected water in a trough or tank for beasts &c. [Ks, S, K, Er-Rághib.) b2: And (hence, metaphorically, Er-Rághib, TA) the first of these verbs, (S, Mgh, Msb, K, Er-Rághib,) and the second, (K,) and the third; (S, Msb, TA;) inf. n. (of the first, S, Msb) جِبَايَةٌ (S, Mgh, Msb, K, Er-Rághib) and (of the last, S, Msb) جِبَاوَةٌ (S, Msb, K) and جَبْوٌ (TA) [and probably جِبْوَةٌ also, which see above]; (tropical:) He collected the [tax called] خَرَاج, (S, Mgh, Msb, K, Er-Rághib,) and [other] property. (Msb, TA.) The last of these verbs is said in the S to be originally with ء, though pronounced without ء; but IB says that this is not the case, and that it has not been heard with ء. (TA.) You say also, جَبَاهُ القَوْمَ (assumed tropical:) [He collected it from the people, or company of men]; (M, K, * TA;) and جَبَى مِنْهُمْ (assumed tropical:) [He collected from them]. (M, K, TA.) b3: Also جَبَا [or جَبَى], (TA,) first Pers\.

جَبَيْتُ, (Zj, TA,) (assumed tropical:) He appropriated a thing purely to himself, exclusively of any partner; chose it, or took it in preference, for himself. (Zj, TA.) And hence, (Zj, TA,) ↓ اجتباهُ (assumed tropical:) He chose it, or selected it, (Zj, S, K) لِنَفْسِهِ for himself. (TA.) A2: And جَبَى and جَبَا, [originally جَبَأَ,] He returned, receded, retreated, or went back. (TA.) 2 جبّى, inf. n. تَجْبِيَةٌ, He placed his hands upon his knees, (K, TA,) in prayer; (TA;) or upon the ground: or he fell prostrate; or fell upon his face: (K:) or he lowered his body and his hands, and raised his buttocks: (Ham p. 801:) [or] تجبية signifies a man's standing [with the hands upon the knees] in the manner of the رَاكِع: (S, K: *) accord. to A'Obeyd, what is thus termed is of two kinds: one is the placing the hands upon the knees, while standing: the other, the prostrating oneself, or falling upon the face, lying down; which is سُجُودٌ: (S:) or the bending down, and placing the hands upon the knees; because it is a bringing-together of the limbs. (Mgh.) A2: جبّاهُ, inf. n. as above, meaning He gave to him, is vulgar. (TA.) 4 اجبى in the trad. مَنْ أَجْبَى فَقَدْ أَرْبَى is originally أَجْبَأَ [q. v.]: (S:) accord. to IAth, it is a corruption of the relater, or the ء is suppressed to assimilate the verb to اربى (TA.) The inf. n., إِجْبَآءٌ, is variously explained, as follows: (TA:) The selling seed-produce before it shows itself to be in a good state: (A'Obeyd, Th, S, K:) and a man's hiding his camels from the collector of the poor-rate: (IAar, A'Obeyd, K:) and i. q. عِينَةٌ; i. e. the selling to a man a commodity for a certain price to be paid at a certain period, then buying it of him with ready money for a less price than that for which it was sold. (TA.) 8 اِجْتِبَآءٌ (assumed tropical:) The drawing forth property from the places in which it is known, or presumed, or accustomed, to be. (TA.) b2: (assumed tropical:) The collecting in the way of choice, or selection. (Er-Rághib, TA.) b3: See also 1, last sentence but one. b4: Also (assumed tropical:) God's particular, or peculiar, distinguishing of men by abundant bounty, from which various blessings result to them without their labour; as happens to prophets and some others. (Er-Rághib, TA.) b5: Also اجتباهُ, (assumed tropical:) He forged it: and he extemporized it. (TA.) Hence, in the Kur [vii. 202], قَالُوا لَوْلَا اجْتَبَيْتَهَا (assumed tropical:) They say, Wherefore hast thou not forged it, (Fr, TA,) or produced it, (Th, TA,) or invented it, (Jel,) or put it together by forgery, (Bd,) of thyself? (Fr, Th, Bd, Jel, TA:) or wherefore hast thou not sought it, or demanded it, of God? (Bd.) جَبًا, or جَبًى, (as in different copies of the K,) written with ا and with ى, (TA,) The camel-waterer's going in advance of the camels a day before their coming to the water, and collecting for them water in the drinking-trough, and then bringing them to it (IAar, K, TA) on the morrow. (IAar, TA.) [App. an inf. n., of which, in this sense, the verb is not mentioned.] So in the verse, بِالرَّيْثِ مَا أَرْوَيْتُهَا لَا بِالعَجَلْ وَبِالجَبَا أَرْوَيْتُهَا لَا بِالقَبَلْ [Slowly I satisfied their thirst; not hastily: and by going in advance of them a day, and collecting for them water in the trough, and bringing them to it on the morrow, I satisfied their thirst; not by pouring the water into the trough while they were drinking, without having prepared any for them beforehand]. (IAar, TA.) A2: Also the former, Water collected [in a trough]; and so ↓ جُبْوَةٌ, with damm. (TA. [See جِبًا.]) b2: A wateringtrough (K, TA) in which water is collected: (TA:) or the station of the drawer of water, upon the [upper part of the] casing. (K.) b3: The place where a well is dug: (K:) in this sense, and in the next, also written جَبًى (TA.) b4: The brink, or margin, of a well. (A boo-Leylà, K.) The earth that is around a well, that is seen from afar; (S;) originally جَبَأٌ: (TA:) what is around a well: (K:) and what is around a wateringtrough: (TA:) pl. أَجْبَآءٌ. (K.) A3: جَبَا meaning A gift without compensation is a vulgar word. (TA.) جِبًا Water collected (T, S, K) in a trough, (T, K,) being drawn from a well, (T, TA,) for camels; (S;) [like جَبًا;] as also ↓ جِبْوَةٌ, (K, TA, and so in a copy of the S, but omitted in the CK,) or ↓ جَبْوَةٌ, (so in two copies of the S,) and ↓ جُبْوَةٌ also, (so in a copy of the S, [see جَبًا,]) and ↓ جَبَاوَةٌ, (K, TA, and so in a copy of the S,) and ↓ جَبَاوَةٌ, (K, TA, and so in another copy of the S, but omitted in the CK,) and ↓ جِبَآءَةٌ: (TA as from the K, but not in the CK: [perhaps a mistranscription for ↓ جِبَايَةٌ:]) but accord. to IAmb, جِبًا is pl. of ↓ جِبْيَةٌ. See بَكَّرَ. b8: تَقَدَّمَ فِى أَمْرٍ [He was forward in an affair] قَبْلَ فِعْلِهِ [before doing it]. (A'Obeyd, T in art. رمى.) b9: تَقَدَّمَ i. q.

سَبَقَ; (K, art. سبق, &c.;) and contr. of تَأَخَّرَ. (TA, art. أخر.) b10: تَقَدَّمَ إِلَيْهِ فِى كَذَا, (K,) or بِكَذَا, (Msb,) or both, (Mgh,) He commanded, ordered, bade, charged, or enjoined, him respecting, or to do, such a thing; (Mgh, Msb, K;) as also ↓ قَدَّمَ, inf. n. تَقْدِيمٌ. (Msb.) 6 تَقَادَمَ is best rendered It became old: and ↓ قَدُمَ it was old.8 اِقْتَدَى بِهِ He did as he did, following his example; or taking him as an example, an exemplar, a pattern, or an object of imitation. (Msb.) He followed his example, imitated him; &c.10 اِسْتَقْدَمَ He went before. b2: اِسْتَقْدَمَتْ رِحَالَتُكَ: see art. رحل.

قَدَمٌ The human foot, from the ankle downwards. (Mgh.) b2: لَهُ قَدَمٌ رَاسِخَةٌ فِى العِلْمِ: see art. رسخ. b3: عَلَى قَدَمٍ عَظِيمٍ

On an excellent foundation. b4: فُلَانٌ عَلَى قَدَمِ فُلَانٍ

Such a one is successor of such a one.

قِدَمٌ Oldness; antiquity. b2: Existence, or duration, or time, without beginning; like

أَزَلٌ (Kull, p. 31; &c.) See أَزَلٌ. b3: عَلَى وَجْهِ الدَّهْرِ: قِدَمُ الدَّهْرِ means properly the olden time; antiquity. b4: علَىَ قِدَمِ الدَّهْرِ [In, or from, old, or ancient, time; of old]. (S, M, K, art. أس; in the first and last of which it is coupled with the like phrase.) مِنْ قُدُمٍ

[In front]. (K, voce ظُنْبُوبٌ.) b2: قُدُمٌ: see أُخُرٌ.

قاَدِمَةٌ as applied to a part of a camel's saddle is an improper word: the proper term is وَاسِطٌ.

قَدُومٌ An adz; [so in the present day, but pronounced قَدُّوم;] a certain implement of the carpenter; (S, Mgh, Msb;) a فَأْس with which one hews, or forms or fashions by cutting. (S.) قَدِيمٌ Ancient; old; to which no commencement is assigned. b2: مَالٌ قَدِيمٌ Old, or long-possessed, property. (S, A, Mgh, Msb, all in art. تلد.) b3: قَدِيمٌ The reputation (حَسَبٌ) of a man or people. (TA, art. دثر.) See a verse in 1 of art. ثنى. b4: القَدِيمُ, as an epithet applied to God, i. q. القَدِيمُ الأَزَلِىُّ The Ancient without beginning.

القُدَّامُ The location that is before.

قَوادِمُ

: respecting the feathers thus called, see voce مَنَاكِبُ, and أَبْهَرُ.

جَرِىْءُ المُقْدَمِ

: see art. جرأ. المُقْدَم is here syn. with الإِقْدَام.

مَقْدَامٌ Very bold or daring or courageous (S, K,) against the enemy; (S;) as also مَقْدَامَةٌ. (S.) b2: مِقْدَامَةٌ: see voce مِعْزاَبَة. b3: [The pl.]

مَقَادِمُ Fronts; fore parts. See an ex. voce أَعْثَرَ. b4: مَقَادِيمُ The front of the forehead. (JK.) مُقَدَّمٌ A provost, chief, head, director, conductor, or manager. b2: مُقَدَّمٌ The antecedent (or first proposition) in an enthymeme, and (first part) of a hypothetical proposition. b3: مُقَدَّمَةٌ The van, or vanguard, of an army.

مُقَدِّمَةٌ The ground whereon rests an inquiry or investigation: and the ground whereon rests the truth of an evidence or a demonstration: and a [premiss or] proposition which is made a part of a syllogism: and المُقَدِّمَةُ الغَرِيبَةُ is that [premiss] which is both actually and virtually suppressed in the syllogism; as when we say, A is equal to B, and B is equal to C, when it results that A is equal to C, by means of the مُقَدِّمَة غَرِيبَة, which is, every equal to the equal of a thing is equal to that thing. (KT.) مُتَقَدِّمٌ Preceding: anterior; being, or lying, in advance of others. b2: مُتَقَدِّمٌ فِى الأُمُورِ Forward in affairs.

عزر

1 عَزَرَهُ, aor. ـِ inf. n. عَزْرٌ, He prevented, hindered, withheld, or forbade, him; (Mgh, * O, K, * TA;) and turned him away, or back; (Mgh, * O, TA;) عَنِ الشَّىْءِ from the thing: this is the primary signification, from which others, mentioned in the next paragraph, are derived. (TA.) See 2, in eight places. b2: And عَزَرْتُ البَعِيرَ. inf. n. عَزْرٌ, I tied a cord upon the خَيَاشِيم [app. meaning the upper parts of the nostrils] of the camel, and then put medicine into his mouth. (O, TA.) b3: And عَزَرَ المَرُأَةَ, (TA,) inf. n. as above, (K,) He compressed the woman. (K, * TA.) 2 عزّرهُ, (O, TA,) inf. n. تَعْزِيرٌ, (S, O, K, TA,) He disciplined, chastised, corrected, or punished, him; (S, O, TA;) meaning he did to him that which should turn him away, or back, from evil, or foul, conduct. (A.) And one says, ضَرَبَهُ تَعْزِيرًا, meaning He beat him moderately; not exceeding the ordinary bounds. (TA in art. حل.) b3: Also He constrained him against his will, عَلَى

الأَمْرِ to do the thing, (O, K, *) and taught him by forbidding him to return to the doing of that which was at variance therewith; and so ↓ عَزَرَهُ: (IAar, O:) and he taught him the فَرَائِض and أَحْكَام [or obligatory statutes or ordinances of God]; (O;) or التَّعْزِيرُ, (Az, L,) or ↓ العَزْرُ, (K,) signifies the teaching [one] (Az, L, K) religion, (Az, L,) or بَاب الدِّين [i. e. the declaration of belief in the unity of God and in the mission of Mohammad] and the فَرَائِض and أَحْكَام.
