شفو and شفى 1 شَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ, aor. ـُ [inf. n. app. شَفًا, but said in the TK to be شَفْوٌ,] The sun was, or became, near to setting: (K in art. شفو:) and شَفَت, (K in art. شفى,) [aor. ـِ inf. n. شَفًا, (TA,) it (the sun) set; as also شَفِيَت: (K:) or, accord. to IKtt, set save a little; and the like is said in the T. (TA.) قُبَيْلَ الشَّفَا means A little before the setting of the sun. (TA.) [See also شَفًا below.]

b2: And شَفَا said of the هِلَال [or moon a little after or before the change], It rose. (K.) And said of a شَخْص [or bodily form or figure seen from a distance, or a person], It, or he, appeared, or became apparent. (K.)

A2: شَفَاهُ, (S, Msb, K,) aor. ـِ (Msb, K,) inf. n. شِفَآءٌ, (S, Msb,) He (God, S, Msb) recovered

him, or restored him to convalescence, syn. أَبْرَأَهُ, so in the M, but in the K بَرَاهُ, (TA,) namely a sick person, (Msb,) مِنْ مَرَضِهِ [from his disease, or sickness]. (S, TA.)

2 شفّاهُ بِكُلِ شَىْءٍ, inf. n. تَشْفِيَةٌ, He treated him medically, or curatively, with everything whereby he might attain recovery, or restoration to convalescence. (TA.)

b2: مَا شَفَّى فُلَانٌ أَفْضَلُ

مِمَّا شَفَّيْتَ i. e. مَا ازْدَادَ and رَبِحَ [meaning The gain of such a one (ما being here what is termed مَصْدَرِيَّة, as اِزْدَادَ and رَبِحَ are intrans.,) is more excellent than thy gain] is said to be an instance of substitution, [originally شَفَّفَ and شَفَّفْتَ,] like

[قَصَّى and تَقَصَّى and] تَقَضَّى [for قَصَّصَ and تَقَصَّصَ and تَقَضَّضَ]. (TA.)

3 مُشَافَاةٌ [an inf. n. of which the verb, if used, is شَافَى]: see 3 in art. شفه.

4 اشفى عَلَيْهِ He was, or became, on the brink of it; (S, Msb, K, TA;) namely, a thing; and death: (S, Msb:) mostly used in relation to evil, but also in relation to good: so says IKtt. (TA.)

b2: And اشفى [alone] (assumed tropical:) He was, or became, at the point of [giving or receiving] a charge or an injunction, or a trust or deposit. (TA.)

b3: And (assumed tropical:) He was, or became, in the last part of the night; which is termed شَفَا اللَّيْلِ. (TA.)

A2: أَشْفَى نَفْسَهُ عَلَى هُلْكٍ (K and TA in art. خطر) and اشفى بِهَا (TA in the same) i. e. عَلَى شَفَا هُلْكٍ [meaning (assumed tropical:) He caused himself to be on the brink of destruction]. (TA ibid.)

A3: اشفاهُ He gave him a remedial medicine. (Az, TA.) And He prescribed for him a remedy in which should be his recovery, or restoration to convalescence. (TA.) And أَشْفَيْتُكَ الشَّىْءَ (S, K *)

I gave thee the thing in order that thou shouldst attain, or seek, recovery, or restoration to convalescence, thereby. (S: in two copies thereof, بِهِ ↓ تَشْتَفِى: in two other copies thereof, and in like manner in the K, بِهِ ↓ تَسْتَشْفِى.) And اشفاهُ

اللّٰهُ عَسَلًا God made honey to be his remedy. (AO, S: and the like is said by IKtt as cited in the TA.)

5 تشفّى: see 8 [with which it is syn.].

b2: [Hence,] تشفّى مِنْ غَيْظِهِ (S, MA, K) (assumed tropical:) He recovered from his anger, wrath, or rage. (MA.)

And تشفّى مِنْ عَدُوِّهِ, (T, TA,) or بِالعَدُوِّ, and به ↓ اشتفى, (Msb,) (assumed tropical:) He inflicted injury upon his enemy [or the enemy] in a manner that rejoiced him [or relieved him from his anger]: (T, TA:) [or he attained what he desired from his enemy or the enemy, and so appeased his anger:] because latent anger is like a disease; and when it departs by reason of that which one seeks to obtain from his enemy, he is as though he became free, or recovered, from his disease. (Msb.)

6 تَشَافَيْتُ المَآءَ a phrase mentioned by IAar as meaning I exhausted the water: said by ISd to be originally تَشَافَفْتُ. (TA in art. شف.)

8 اشتفى بِكَذَا (S, K, TA) He attained recovery, or restoration to convalescence, by means of such a thing: (TA;) and so ↓ تشفّى: (TK:) and مِنْ عِلَّتِهِ ↓ استشفى [if not a mistranscription for اشتفى] he became free from his disease, sickness, or malady; recovered from it; or became convalescent. (TA.) See 4, latter part.

شَفًا The point or extremity, verge, brink, or edge, of anything; (S, Msb, K, &c.;) like ↓ شَفَةٌ; for شَفَا الحُفْرَةِ (Ksh in iii. 99) or شَفَا البِئْرِ (Bd ibid.) and شَفَتُهَا both signify the same, (Ksh, Bd,) i. e. حَرْفُهَا (Ksh) or طَرَفُهَا; (Bd;) but the final و in the former is changed into ا, and in the latter [accord. to those who hold شَفَةٌ to be originally شَفْوَةٌ] it is elided; (Ksh, Bd;) شَفًا being originally شَفَوٌ: (Bd:) [but شَفًا generally signifies as expl.

above; and شَفَةٌ almost always signifies the “ lip ” of a human being:] the dual is شَفَوَانِ; this being known, as Akh says, by the fact that إِمَالَة in the word شَفًا is not allowable: (S:) and the pl. is أَشْفَآءٌ. (TA.) It is said in the Kur [iii. 99], وَكُنْتُمْ عَلَى شَفَا حُفْرَةٌ مِنَ النَّارِ فَأَنْقَذَكُمْ مِنْهَا [and ye were on the verge, or brink, of a pit of the fire of Hell, and He saved, or rescued, you from it]. (S.) And one says, هُوَ عَلَى شَفَا الهَلَاكِ (tropical:) [He is on the brink of destruction]. (TA.)

b2: Also (tropical:) A little; (S, A, K, TA;) a small part, or portion; somewhat; (A, TA;) somewhat remaining of the moon when near the change, (K, TA, [الهَلاك in the CK is erroneously put for الهِلَال,]) and of the sight (البَصَر), and of the day, and the like, as in the T. (TA.) One says of a man on the occasion of his dying, and of the moon at [the last period of the month called] its مُحَاق, and of the sun at its setting, (S,) مَا بَقِىَ مِنْهُ إِلَّا شَفًا [and مِنْهَا when

said of the sun] (assumed tropical:) There has not remained of him, or it, save a little: (S, K: *) and [in like manner]

مِنَ العُمُرِ [of life]. (S.) And one says, أَتَيْتُهُ

بِشَفًا مِنْ ضَوْءِ الشَّمْسِ (assumed tropical:) [I came to him in a time when there was little remaining of the light of the sun]. (TA.) El-'Ajjáj says, أَشْرَفْتُهُ بِلَا شَفًا أَوْ بِشَفَا وَمِرْبَأٍ عَالٍ لِمَنٌ تَشَرَّفَا

meaning [Many an elevated place of observation, high to him who ascends it, I have ascended]

when the sun had set or when there was somewhat of it remaining. (S.) One says also, صَارَ فِى شَفَا

القَمَرِ meaning (assumed tropical:) He was, or became, in the last part of the night. (TA.) And it is said in a trad., (in relation to [the temporary marriage termed]

المُتْعَة,) فَلَوْ لَا نَهْيُهُ عَنْهَا مَا احْتَاجَ إِلَى الزِّنَا إِلَّا شَفًا, accord. to the T meaning [Were it not for his (i. e. God's) forbidding it, none would need having recourse to fornication,] save a small number of men: (T, TA:) or, accord. to 'Atà, it means, but would be on the brink thereof, without falling into it; شَفًا being thus used in the place of the inf. n. إِشْفَآء: so says IAth, as from Az. (TA.)

شَفَةٌ, in which the deficient letter is و, (K, TA,) for it has for pl. شَفَوَاتٌ, (TA,) or ه, (K, TA,) for it has [also] for pl. شِفَاهٌ, (TA,) has been mentioned before, (K, TA,) in art. شفه [q. v.]. (TA.)

شِفَآءٌ, (K, TA,) like كِسَآءٌ, (TA,) [in the CK erroneously written شَفاء,] primarily signifies The becoming free from disease, sickness, or malady; recovering therefrom; or becoming convalescent:

إِشْفًى An instrument for perforating; (K;) a thing pertaining to the makers or sewers of boots or shoes or sandals &c.; (S;) [i. e.] the awl used by them: (MA, KL:) and the instrument with which leather, or skin, is sewed: (Mgh, K:) or, accord. to ISk, it is [an instrument used] for water-skins and water-bags and the like; and the مِخْصَف is for sandals: (S:) [see also art. اشف:] masc. and fem.: (K, * TA:) pl. أَشَافٍ. (Mgh, TA.)

b2: Th mentions the saying, إِنْ لَاطَمْتَهُ

لَاطَمْتَ الإِشْفَى [if thou contend with him in slapping, thou wilt do so with the اشفى]; meaning that when one does so, it will be against himself. (TA.)

ى1 زَنَى, aor. ـْ inf. n. زِنًى [often written زِنًا] and زِنَآءٌ, (S, Mgh, * Msb, K,) the latter an inf. n. of 3 (S, Mgh, Msb, K) also, (S, Mgh, K,) but said by some to be a dial. var. of the former, (Msb,) the former being of the dial. of the people of El-Hijáz, (Lh, S, Msb, TA,) and the latter of the dial. of Benoo-Temeem, (Lh, TA,) or of the people of Nejd, (S, Msb, TA,) He committed fornication or adultery; (El-Munáwee, Er-Rághib, TA;) بِهَا with her: (MA:) but accord. to El-Munáwee, [it seems to be properly a dial. var. of زَنَأَ as meaning he mounted; for he says that,] in the proper language of the Arabs, الزِّنَا signifies the mounting upon a thing; and in the language of the law it signifies the commission of the act first mentioned above: it is [thus] syn. with فَجَرَ: and in like manner one says of a woman [زَنَتْ]: (TA:) ↓ زنّى, inf. n. تَزْنِيَةٌ, also signifies the same: (TA:) and so does ↓ زانى, inf. n. مُزَانَاةٌ and زِنَآءٌ: (K:) one says of a woman, ↓ تُزَانِى, inf. n. مُزَانَاةٌ and زِنَآءٌ, meaning تُبَاغِى [i. e. زَنْيَةٌ A single act of الزِّنَى [i. e. fornication or adultery]: (Msb, TA:) and ↓ زِنًى is [used in the same sense, (though properly an inf. n., not of un.,) as is shown by its being] dualized: they say زِنَيَانِ: (TA:) [but this is post-classical:] thus using the dual of زِنًى, the lawyers say, قَذَفَهُ بِزِنَيَيْنِ [He reproached him with two acts of fornication or adultery]: (Msb, TA:) but [in this instance, and] in the saying ↓ شَهِدَ عَلَى زِنَاءَيْنِ, [which is dual of زِنَآءٌ, properly an inf. n. like زِنًى,] or زِنَيَيْنِ, [He testified, or gave decisive information, respecting two acts of fornication or adultery,] the right word is زَنْيَتَيْنِ. (Mgh.) One says also, هُوَ ابْنُ زَنْيَةٍ, and sometimes ↓ زِنْيَةٍ, (K,) but the former is the more chaste, (Az, TA,) meaning ↓ ابْنُ زِنًى [i. e. Q. 1 خَرْطَمَهُ, (K,) inf. n. خَرْطَمَةٌ, (TK,) He hit, or struck, his خُرْطُوم [or nose, &c.]: or he twisted it. (K.) Q. 3 اِخْرَنْطَمَ He (a man, TA) elevated his nose: (K:) or twisted it, and was silent, in his anger: (TA:) and was proud and angry, (K, TA,) raising his head. (TA.) خُرْطُمٌ and خُرْطُمٌّ: see خُرْطُومٌ.

خُرْطُمَانٌ Long, or tall: (JK, K:) or longnosed. (TA.) And A man having a large nose. (IKh, IB.) خُرْطُومٌ The nose, (Az, JK, S, Msb, K,) [properly,] accord. to Th, of a beast of prey: (TA:) or the fore part thereof: (K:) or a large, or an elevated, nose: (MA:) or the part upon which a man contracts, or closes, the حَنَكَانِ [or upper and lower portions of the mouth]: as also ↓ خُرْطُمٌ; (K;) sometimes, by poetic license, written ↓ خُرْطُمٌّ: (TA:) or it signifies also the part upon which contracts, or closes, the front of the حَنَكَانِ: (JK:) [and a snout: often used in this sense; and so, in describing the fish termed كَوْسَج, in the S and K:] and the proboscis of an elephant; and, as being likened thereto, of (??) flea: (Th, TA:) pl. خَرَاطِيمُ. 1 خَطَّ, aor. ـُ inf. n. خَطٌّ, He made [a line, or lines, or] a mark, عَلَى الأَرْضِ, upon the ground. (Msb.) You say, خَطَّ الزَّاجِرُ فِى الأَرْضِ, aor. and inf. n. as above, The diviner made a line, or a mark, or lines, or marks, upon the ground, and then divined. (TA.) Th says, on the authority of IAar, that عِلْمُ الخَطِّ is عِلْمُ الرَّمْلِ [or geomancy]: I 'Ab says that it is an ancient science, which men have relinquished: but Lth says that it is practised to the present time; [to which I may add, that it has not even now ceased; being still practised on sand and the like, and also on paper;] and they have conventional terms which they employ in it, and they elicit thereby the secret thoughts &c., and often hit upon the right therein: the diviner comes to a piece of soft ground, and he has a boy, with whom is a style; and the master makes many lines, or marks, in haste, that they may not be counted; then he returns, and obliterates leisurely lines, or marks, two by two; and if there remain two lines, or marks, they are a sign of success, and of the attainment of the thing wanted: while he obliterates, his boy says, for the sake of auguring well, اِبْنَىْ عِيَانْ أَسْرِعَا البَيَانْ [O two sons of 'Iyán (meaning two lines or marks), hasten ye the manifestation]: I 'Ab says that when he has obliterated the lines, or marks, and one remains, it is the sign of disappointment: and Az and Lth relate the like of this. It is said in a trad. of Mo'áwiyeh Ibn-El-Hakam Es-Sulamee, traced up by him to its author, كَانَ نَبِىٌّ مِنَ الأَنْبِيَآءِ يَخُطُّ فَمَنْ خَطَّهُ عَلِمَ مِثْلَ عِلْمِهِ [A prophet of the prophets used to practise geomancy; and he who matches his geomancy knows the like of his knowledge]. (TA.) b2: [In mathematics, A line. And hence, خَطُّ الاِسْتِوَآءِ The equinoctial line.] b3: A slight track, or path, or road, in plain, or smooth, or soft, ground: pl. as above. (K.) And A road, or path: (Th, K:) as in the saying, اِلْزَمْ ذٰلِكَ الخَطَّ وَلَا تَظْلِمْ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا [Keep thou to that road, or path, and do not deviate from it at all]: or in this sense the word is ↓ خُطٌّ. (TA.) Also A road, or way, or street, that is a common thoroughfare; and so ↓ خُطٌّ. (IDrd, K.) b4: (tropical:) [A streak, or stripe, of herbage.] Yousay, الكَلَأُ خُطُوطٌ فِى الأَرْضِ (tropical:) The herbage consists of streaks, or stripes, upon the ground; the rain not having watered the country in common. يُعَظِّمُونَ فِيهَا حُرُمَاتِ اللّٰهِ تَعَالَى إِلَّا أَعْطِيْتُهُمْ إِيَّاهَا [They shall not ask of me a matter wherein they honour the sacred things of God, (exalted be He,) but I will grant it to them]. (TA.) And in the same, قَدْ عَرَضَ عَلَيْكُمْ خُطَّةَ رُشْدٍ فَاقْبَلُوهَا He hath proposed to you a case of evident rectitude; therefore do ye accept it. (TA.) And Taäbbatasharrà says, هُمَا خَطَّتَا إِمَّا إِسَارٌ وَمِنَّةٌ وَإِمَّا دَمٌ وَالقَتْلُ بِالحُرِّ أَجْدَرُ [They are two case; either bondage and reproach, or else blood; and slaughter is more befitting to the free, or ingenuous]: he means خُطَّتَانِ. (S. [See Ham p. 34.]) b3: Also A course: as in the phrase خُطَّةٌ نَائِيَةٌ A distant, or far-extending, course. (S, TA.) You say also, خُذْ خُطَّةً, i. e. خُذْ خُطَّةَ الاِنْتِصَافِ [Take thou the course of exacting thy right, or due, with equity]; meaning اِنْتَصِفْ [exact thou thy right, or due, with equity]. (S.) b4: A proof; an evidence; a testimony; an argument; a plea; or an allegation; syn. حُجَّةٌ. (O, TA.) So in the phrase, أَقِمْ عَلَى هٰذَا الأَمْرِ بِخُطَّةٍ [app. Establish thou a proof, &c., against this thing, or case]; as is said in the “ Nawádir. ” (TA.) b5: An object of want which one has determined to accomplish: as in the saying, جَآءَ وَفِى رَأْسِهِ خُطَّةٌ He came having in his mind [lit. his head] an object of want &c. : [but see the last sentence in this paragraph:] the vulgar say خُطْبَةٌ: (S, L:) the former is the word used by the Arabs: (L:) the latter, however, occurs in the “ Nawádir ” of Az; therefore the attribution of it to the vulgar demands consideration. (KL.) رِمَاحٌ خَطِّيَّةٌ Spears of El-Khatt; so called from الخَطُّ, a place in El-Yemámeh, (S, Msb,) also called خَطُّ هَجَرٍ, (S,) because they are brought thither (S, Msb) from India, (S,) and straightened in that place, (S, Msb, *) which is a coast for ships; not that the canes grow there: (Msb:) or they are so called from الخَطُّ which is the station for ships in El-Bahreyn, because they are sold there; not that it is the place of their growth: this place is also called الخِطُّ: (K:) but this demands consideration; for it is said [in the 'Eyn, i. e.] by Lth, (TA,) or by Kh, (Msb,) that when you convert the rel. n. into a subst., you say ↓ خِطِيَّةٌ, (Msb, TA,) with kesr to the خ, (Msb,) without رماح, like as you say, ثِيَابٌ قِبْطِيَّةٌ, (Msb, TA,) with kesr, (Msb,) but when you convert the rel. n. into a subst., you say, قُبْطِيَّةٌ, (Msb, TA,) with damm, to distinguish the subst. from the rel. n., without ثياب: (Msb:) a single spear of this kind is called رُمْحٌ خَطِّىٌّ: (TA:) AHn says that الخَطِّىُّ signifies the spears; and that it is a rel. n. used in the manner of a proper name; being a rel. n. from الخَطُّ, which is خَطُّ البَحْرَيْنِ, where ships moor when they come from India. Q. 1 عَرْصَفَهُ He pulled it, (Lth, O, L, K,) namely, a thing, (O,) so that he slit it, or divided it lengthwise. (Lth, O, K.) عَرْصَفٌ A certain plant, called in ancient Greek كَمَافِيطُوس [i. e.

χαμαίπιτυς, the chamæpitys, or ground-pine], (K, TA,) by which name it is commonly known to the physicians, who say, (TA,) when a mixture of some of its leaves with hydromel is drunk for forty days, it cures the sciatica; and when for seven days, it cures the jaundice. (K, TA.) عِرْصَافٌ One of the عَرَاصِيف of the [camel's saddle called] رَحْل [or قَتَب], (S, O,) which are four pegs, or pins of wood, that unite, or conjoin, the heads of [the curved pieces of wood called] the أَحْنَآء of the قَتَب; in the head of each حِنْو are two pegs, or pins of wood, bound with [the sinews called] عَقَب, (S, O, K,) or with [pieces of] the skins of camels; and in it [or appertaining to the same part] are the ظَلِفَات; (S, O;) and they are also called the عَصَافِير, which is formed from عراصيف by transposition: (S and O in art. عصفر:) or, (K,) accord. to As, (O,) they are the two pieces of wood (O, K) that bind, (O,) or are bound, (K,) between [the upright piece of wood called] the وَاسِط [in the fore part] of the رَحْل and its آخِرَة [which is in its hinder part]; on the right and left. فِنْطاسٌ [The bottom of the hold of a ship or boat; i. e.] the part of a ship or boat where the water that is drawn out therefrom collects: (AA, O, K, TA:) this is the primary signification: (O, TA:) pl. فَنَاطِيسُ. (TA.) b2: Hence, (O,) A tank made of boards, (O, K,) and tarred, (O,) borne in sea-going vessels, (O, K, *) and containing sweet water for drinking. (O, * K.) b3: And, (O, K,) accord. to IAar, (O,) A bowl (O, K) of wood, the exterior of which is coloured with yellow and red and green, (O,) with which the sweet water is distributed (O, K) among the ship's crew. Pers\., app., قَزُزْتَ,] aor. ـُ inf. n. قَزَازَةٌ, He felt, or had a sense of, or was moved with, shame, or pudency; his soul shrank from foul things: (M:) and [in like manner] ↓ تقزّز he was scrupulous in shunning, or avoiding, unclean things, or impurities; (S, M;) he removed himself far from such things; (S, Mgh, K;) and قُزٌّ [an inf. n. of قَزَّ] signifies the same as تَقَزُّزٌ. And قَزَّتْ نَفْسِى عَنِ الشَّىْءِ, and قَزَّتْهُ, with and without a prep., (M, TA,) inf. n. قَزٌّ, (M, K,) My soul, or mind, refused the thing, or rejected it; (M, K, * TA;) a meaning said by IKtt to be of the dial. of El-Yemen: (TA:) and it loathed the thing; which latter is the more common signification: (M, TA:) and [in like manner] عَنِ الشَّىْءِ ↓ تقزّز he did not eat the thing, nor drink it, willingly: (M, TA:) end مِنْ ↓ تقزّز

أَكْلِ الضَّبِّ وَغَيْرِهِ [he loathed, or shunned, or avoided, the eating of the lizard called ضبّ &c.]. (S, Mgh, TA.) 5 تَقَزَّّ see 1, in three places.

قَزٌّ A quality, or thing, that is to be loathed, or shunned, or avoided, for its uncleanness, in food; as also ↓ قُزُّ and ↓ قَزَازَةٌ. (M, TA.) See also 1.

A2: A man who feels, or has a sense of, or is moved with, shame, or pudency; whose soul shrinks from foul things: (M, TA:) and, as also ↓ قُزٌّ and ↓ قِزٌّ, a man scrupulous in shunning, or avoiding, unclean things, or impurities; (S;) who removes himself far from such things; (S, K;) who does not eat nor drink a thing willingly: (M:) and the same three epithets, (TA,) and ↓ قَزَزٌ (K) and ↓ قُزَّازٌ, (IAar, K,) a man well-bred, or polite, (ظَرِيفٌ,) who guards against vices or faults, and shuns acts of disobedience and afflictions, not through pride: (K, TA;) fem. قَزَّةٌ and قُزَّةٌ and قِزَّةٌ: (M, K: *) the pl. of قَزٌّ is أَقِزَّآءُ, which is anomalous. (M, TA.) A3: I. q. إِبْرِيسَمٌ [Silk: or raw silk:] (K:) or a kind thereof: (S:) or that whereof ابريسم is made; (Lth, Az, Msb, TA;) wherefore some say, that قزّ and ابريسم are like wheat and flour: (Msb:) a Persian word, [originally قَزْ,] (M, TA,) arabicized: (S, M, Msb:) pl. قُزُوزٌ.
