(نَمَسَ) النُّونُ وَالْمِيمُ وَالسِّينُ ثَلَاثُ كَلِمَاتٍ: إِحْدَاهَا تَدُلُّ عَلَى سَتْرِ شَيْءٍ، وَالْأُخْرَى عَلَى لَوْنٍ مِنَ الْأَلْوَانِ، وَالثَّالِثَةُ عَلَى فَسَادِ شَيْءٍ مِنَ الْأَشْيَاءِ. فَالْأُولَى النَّامُوسُ: وَهُوَ صَاحِبُ سِرِّ الْإِنْسَانِ. وَنَمَسَ: قَالَ حَدِيثًا فِي سِرٍّ وَسَتْرٍ. وَالنَّامُوسُ: قُتْرَةُ الصَّائِدِ. وَفِي مُصَنَّفِ الْغَرِيبِ: النَّامُوسُ جَبْرَئِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ. وَالْأَصْلُ كُلُّهُ وَاحِدٌ. وَنَامَسْتُ فُلَانًا مُنَامَسَةً: سَارَرْتُهُ وَجَعَلْتُهُ مَوْضِعًا لِسِرِّي. قَالَ ابْنُ دُرَيْدٍ: وَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ سَتَرْتَ بِهِ شَيْئًا فَهُوَ نَامُوسٌ لَهُ.

وَالثَّالِثَةُ النَّمَسُ: الْكَدَرُ فِي اللَّوْنِ. يُقَالُ الْقَطَا النُّمْسُ، لِأَنَّ فِي لَوْنِهَا كُدْرَةً. وَالنَّمَسُ: فَسَادُ السَّمْنِ وَالْغَالِيَةِ وَكُلِّ طِيبٍ. وَالنِّمْسُ: دُوَيْبَّةٌ، سُمِّيَتْ لِلَوْنِهَا. فَأَمَّا قَوْلُ حُمَيْدٍ:

كَتَوَاهُقِ النِّمْسِ

فَيُقَالُ: إِنَّهُ أَرَادَ هَذِهِ الدَّوَابَّ. وَرَوَاهُ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ: " النُّمْسِ "، قَالَ: وَهِيَ الْقَطَا جَمْعُ أَنْمَسٍ.
