المتواتر: هو الخبر الثابت على ألسنة قوم لا يتصور تواطؤهم على الكذب؛ لكثرتهم، أو لعدالتهم، كالحكم بأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ادعى النبوة وأظهر المعجزة على يده؛ سمي بذلك لأنه لا يقع دفعة بل على التعاقب والتوالي.
