(كَوَسَ) الْكَافُ وَالْوَاوُ وَالسِّينُ أَصْلٌ صَحِيحٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى صَرْعٍ أَوْ مَا يُقَارِبُهُ. يُقَالُ: كَاسَهُ يَكُوسُهُ، إِذَا صَرَعَهُ. وَمِنْهُ كَاسَتِ النَّاقَةُ تَكُوسُ، إِذَا عُقِرَتْ فَقَامَتْ عَلَى ثَلَاثٍ. وَإِنَّمَا قِيلَ لَهَا ذَلِكَ لِأَنَّهَا قَدْ قَارَبَتْ أَنْ تُصْرَعَ. قَالَ:

وَلَوْ عِنْدَ غَسَّانَ السَّلِيطِيِّ عَرَّسَتْ ... رَغَا قَرَنٌ مِنْهَا وَكَاسٌ عَقِيرُ

وَرُبَّمَا قَالُوا لِلْفَرَسِ الْقَصِيرِ الدَّوَارِجِ: كُوسِيٌّ. وَعُشْبٌ مُتَكَاوِسٌ، إِذَا كَثُرَ وَكَثُفَ، وَهُوَ مِنْ قِيَاسِ الْبَابِ لِأَنَّهُ يَتَصَرَّعُ بَعْضُهُ عَلَى بَعْضٍ. فَأَمَّا الْكَأْسُ، فَيُقَالُ هُوَ الْإِنَاءُ بِمَا فِيهِ مِنْ خَمْرٍ، وَهُوَ مِنْ غَيْرِ الْبَابِ.
