(قَوَعَ) الْقَافُ وَالْوَاوُ وَالْعَيْنُ أَصْلٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى تَبَسُّطٍ فِي مَكَانٍ. مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْقَاعُ: الْأَرْضُ الْمَلْسَاءُ. وَالْأَلِفُ فِي الْأَصْلِ وَاوٌ، يُقَالُ فِي التَّصْغِيرِ قُوَيْعٌ. قَالَ ابْنُ دُرَيْدٍ: الْقَوْعُ: الْمِسْطَحُ الَّذِي يُبْسَطُ فِيهِ التَّمْرُ، وَالْجَمْعُ أَقْوَاعٌ. فَأَمَّا الْقَوْعُ، وَهُوَ ضِرَابُ الْفَحْلِ النَّاقَةَ، فَلَيْسَ مِنْ هَذَا الْبَابِ، لِأَنَّهُ مِنَ الْمَقْلُوبِ. وَأَصْلُهُ قَعْوٌ; وَقَدْ ذُكِرَ.

وَمِمَّا شَذَّ عَنْ هَذَا الْبَابِ قَوْلُهُمْ: إِنَّ الْقُوَاعَ: الذَّكَرُ مِنَ الْأَرَانِبِ.
