قما: قماءة: صغر الجسم وقصره. ففي الحماسة (ص649): وأورثها شر التراث أبوهم قماءة جسم (البيت). وفسرت: القماءة الصغر والقصر. وفي المقري (3: 860): وكان من أعاجيب الزمان في إفراط القمأة (القماءة) حتى يظن رائيه الذي استدبره إنه طفل ابن ثمانية أعوام أو نحوها. والتعليق الذي على الهامش يؤكد أن هذه الكلمة قد حيرت الناشر المصري حيرة شديدة ذلك لأنه مثل غيره من زملائه لا تتعدى معرفتهم على ما جاء في القاموس. مقمى: ديك خصي، ديك يسمن ليؤكل. (دوماس حياة العرب ص431). وأصل المعنى: سمين ومسمن.
