(قَبَعَ) الْقَافُ وَالْبَاءُ وَالْعَيْنُ أَصْلٌ صَحِيحٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى شُبَهِ أَنْ يَخْتَبِئَ الْإِنْسَانُ أَوْ غَيْرُهُ. يُقَالُ: [قَبَعَ] الْخِنْزِيرُ وَالْقُنْفُذُ، إِذَا أَدْخَلَ رَأْسَهُ فِي عُنُقِهِ، قَبْعًا. وَجَارِيَةٌ قُبَعَةٌ طُلَعَةٌ، إِذَا تَخَبَّأَتْ تَارَةً وَتَطَلَّعَتْ تَارَةً. وَالْقُبَعَةُ: خِرْقَةٌ كَالْبُرْنُسِ، تُسَمِّيهَا الْعَامَّةُ: الْقُنْبُعَةُ. وَالْقُبَاعُ: مِكْيَالٌ وَاسِعٌ، كَأَنَّهُ سُمِّيَ قُبَاعًا لِمَا يَقْبَعُ فِيهِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ. وَقَبَعَ الرَّجُلُ: أَعْيَا وَانْبَهَرَ. وَسُمِّيَ قَابِعًا لِأَنَّهُ يَتَقَبَّضُ عِنْدَ إِعْيَائِهِ عَنِ الْحَرَكَةِ.

وَمِمَّا شَذَّ عَنْ هَذَا الْبَابِ قَبِيعَةُ السَّيْفِ، وَهِيَ الَّتِي عَلَى طَرَفِ قَائِمِهِ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ أَوْ فِضَّةٍ.
