(غَفَقَ) الْغَيْنُ وَالْفَاءُ وَالْقَافُ أَصْلٌ صَحِيحٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى خِفَّةٍ وَسُرْعَةٍ وَتَكْرِيرٍ فِي الشَّيْءِ، مَعَ فَتَرَاتٍ تَكُونُ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ.

مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُمْ: غَفَقَ إِبِلَهُ، وَذَلِكَ إِذَا أَسْرَعَ إِيرَادَهَا ثُمَّ كَرَّرَ ذَلِكَ. وَيَقُولُونَ: ظَلَّ يَتَغَفَّقُ الشَّرَابَ، إِذَا جَعَلَ يَشْرَبُهُ سَاعَةً بَعْدَ سَاعَةٍ. وَيُقَالُ: غَفَقَ غَفْقَةً مِنَ اللَّيْلِ، إِذَا نَامَ نَوْمَةً خَفِيفَةً. وَالْغَفْقُ: الْمَطَرُ لَيْسَ بِالشَّدِيدِ. وَيُقَالُ غَفَقَهُ بِالسَّوْطِ غَفَقَاتٍ. وَالْغَفْقُ: الْهُجُومُ عَلَى الشَّيْءِ مِنْ غَيْرِ قَصْدٍ، وَيُقَالُ لِلْآيِبِ مِنْ غَيْبَتِهِ فُجَاءَةً. وَغَفَقَ الْحِمَارُ الْأَتَانَ: أَتَاهَا مَرَّةً بَعْدَ مَرَّةٍ.
