[اشتق] من المَعْتَبَة في الغضب، أو من العِتاب. يقال للبعير إذا مَرّ يَمْشِي على ثلاث قوائم. وهو مَعْقول: مَرّ يَعْتُب عَتبانًا. [قال الرياشي: يَعتِب وقد سمعت من يقول: يَعْتُب. كما قالوا: عرَج يَعْرِجُ ويَعرُج]. وتقول للرَّجُل إذا مَضى ساعة في طريقه ثم رَجَعَ: قد اعتتب في طريقه. وقولهم: ((ولَكَ العُتْبَى والكرامة)): أَي لك الرجوع إلى ما تحِبُّ. ويقال في مثل من الأَمثال: ((إنما يُعَاتَبُ الأَديمُ ذو البَشَرَة)) يراد به: أنه يُراجَع فَيعاد في الدِّباغ؛ قال الحطيئة:
