بضم أوله، وآخره ميم، والعوم: السباحة، والإبل تعوم في سيرها، وكأن العوام موضع ذلك أو فعله، ويجوز أن يكون من عام الرجل يعام وهو شهوة اللبن والعطش، والعوام مثل هيام من هام يهيم، وعوام: اسم موضع بعينه.
