هكذا في الكشف وقال في مدينة العلوم: هو: علم باحث عن قدر الكواكب والأفلاك بالأميال والفراسخ وقدر الشمس والقمر والأرض وبعد كل من هذه الأجرام بعضها عن بعض واعتنى القدماء بهذا العلم وبينوا مسائله ببراهين قطعية لا يرتاب من يتولاها في صحتها انتهى.
