ويسمى ب أصول الحديث أيضا وهو: علم بأصول تعرف بها أحوال حديث رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - من حيث: صحة النقل وضعفه والتحمل والأداء كذا في الجواهر وفي شرح النخبة
وهو: علم يبحث فيه عن صحة الحديث وضعفه ليعمل به أو يترك من حيث: صفات الرجال وصيغ الأداء. انتهى.
قال في كشاف اصطلاحات الفنون: فموضوعه الحديث بالحيثية المذكورة. انتهى.
