ع ف ن : عَفِنَ الشَّيْءُ عَفَنًا مِنْ بَابِ تَعِبَ فَسَدَ
مِنْ نُدُوَّةٍ أَصَابَتْهُ فَهُوَ يَتَمَزَّقُ عِنْدَ مَسِّهِ.

وَعَفِنَ اللَّحْمُ تَغَيَّرَتْ رِيحُهُ وَتَعَفَّنَ كَذَلِكَ فَهُوَ عَفِنٌ بَيِّنُ الْعُفُونَةِ وَمُتَعَفِّنٌ وَيَتَعَدَّى بِالْحَرَكَةِ فَيُقَالُ عَفَنْتُهُ أَعْفِنُهُ مِنْ بَابِ ضَرَبَ وَأَعْفَنْتُهُ بِالْأَلِفِ وَجَدْتُهُ كَذَلِكَ.
