[عطب] العَطب: الهَلاك. وقد عطِب بالكسر. وأعطبه: أهلكه. والمعاطب: المهالك، واحدها مَعْطَب. والعُطْب والعُطُب: القُطن، مثل عسر وعسر. قال الشاعر: كأنَّه في ذُرى عمائمهم * مُوَضَّعٌ من مَنادِف العُطُبِ والعُطْبة: قطعة منه. يقال: أجد ريح عُطْبة، أي ريح قطنة، أو خرقة محترقة.

(عَطَبَ) الْعَيْنُ وَالطَّاءُ وَالْبَاءُ كَلِمَتَانِ لَا تَتَقَارَبَانِ فِي الْمَعْنَى.

فَالْأُولَى: الْعَطَبُ، وَهُوَ الْهَلَاكُ، يُقَالُ عَطِبَ، وَأَعْطَبَهُ غَيْرُهُ.

وَالْكَلِمَةُ الْأُخْرَى: الْعُطْبُ، وَهُوَ الْقُطْنُ.
