(عبل) - في صفة سَعْد بن مُعَاذ، - رضي الله عنه -: "كان عَبْلًا من الرِّجالِ"
: أي ضَخْمًا. يقال: عَبُل يَعبُل عَبالةً.
قال ابنُ الأَعرابي: غُلامٌ عَبْلٌ: سَمِين، والجمع عُبُل ، وهو ذو عَبالَة: أي مَؤُونَةٍ وثِقَل.

(عَبَلَ) الْعَيْنُ وَالْبَاءُ وَاللَّامُ أَصْلٌ صَحِيحٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى ضِخَمٍ وَامْتِدَادٍ وَشِدَّةٍ. مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْعَبْلُ مِنَ الْأَجْسَامِ، وَهُوَ الضَّخْمُ. تَقُولُ: عَبُلَ يَعْبُلُ عَبَالَةً. قَالَ:

خَبَطْنَاهُمْ بِكُلِّ أَرَحَّ لَأْمٍ ... كَمِرْضَاحِ النَّوَى عَبْلٍ وَقَاحِ

الْأَرَحُّ: الْحَافِرُ الْوَاسِعُ.

وَمِنَ الْبَابِ الْأَعْبَلِ، وَهُوَ الْحَجَرُ الصُّلْبُ ذُو الْبَيَاضِ. وَيُقَالُ جَبَلٌ أَعْبَلُ وَصَخْرَةٌ عَبْلَاءُ. وَقَالَ أَبُو كَبِيرٍ الْهَذَلِيُّ يَصِفُ نَابَ الذِّئْبَةِ:

أَخْرَجْتُ مِنْهَا سِلْقَةً مَهْزُولَةً ... عَجْفَاءَ يَبْرُقُ نَابُهَا كَالْأَعْبَلِ

وَمِنْهُ قَوْلُهُمْ: هُوَ عَبْلُ الذِّرَاعَيْنِ، أَيْ غَلِيظُهُمَا مَدِيدُهُمَا. وَمِنْهُ: أَلْقَى عَلَيْهِ عَبَالَّتَهُ) ، أَيْ ثِقْلَهُ. وَمُحْتَمَلٌ أَنَّ يَكُونَ الْعَبَلُ، وَهُوَ ثَمَرُ الْأَرْطَى، مِنْ هَذَا، وَلَعَلَّ فِيهِ امْتِدَادًا وَطُولًا.
