[ضمز] ضَمَزَ يَضْمِزُ ضَمْزاً: سكَتَ ولم يتكلَّم. وكذلك البعيرُ إذا أمسك جِرَّتَهُ في فيه ولم يجترّ. وكلُّ ساكتٍ ضامِزٌ وضَموزٌ. قال الراجز يصف أفعى:

وذات قرنين ضموزا ضرزما * وقال بشر بن أبي خازمٍ الأسدي : لقد ضمزت بجرتها سليم * مخافتنا كما ضمز الحمار * وضمز فلانٌ على مالي، أي جمد عليه ولزمه.

(ضَمَزَ) الضَّادُ وَالْمِيمُ وَالزَّاءُ أَصْلٌ صَحِيحٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى إِمْسَاكٍ فِي كَلَامٍ أَوْ إِمْسَاكٍ عَلَى شَيْءٍ بِفَمٍ وَمَا أَشْبَهَ ذَلِكَ. مِنْ ذَلِكَ ضَمَزَ الْبَعِيرُ: أَمْسَكَ عَنِ الْجِرَّةِ. وَالضَّامِزُ: السَّاكِتُ. وَقَالَ بِشْرٌ: وَقَدْ ضَمَزَتْ بِجِرَّتِهَا سُلَيْمٌ ... مَخَافَتَنَا كَمَا ضَمَزَ الْحِمَارُ

وَالضَّمْزُ: ضَرْبٌ مِنَ الْأَكْلِ، لِأَنَّهُ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَمْسَكَ عَلَيْهِ فِي فَمِهِ. وَضَمَزَ فُلَانٌ عَلَى مَالِي، أَيْ لَزِمَهُ.

وَمِمَّا شَذَّ عَنْ هَذَا الْأَصْلِ: الضَّمْزَةُ: الْأَكَمَةُ الْخَاشِعَةُ، وَالْجَمْعُ: ضَمْزٌ.
