شهق: شهق شَهْقَةً: تأوه آهة طويلة (بوشر) وفي ألف ليلة (1: 600) المصدر شهيق.
شهق شَهْقَة: تعجب مندهشاً (بوشر).
شَهْقَة: تعجب الدهشة (بوشر).
الشهقة: عند العامة سعال شديد يسدّ مجرى النفس حتى يصير صاحبه يشهق ويدعونه بالشرقة (محيط المحيط).
شَهِيق: نحيب (بوشر، همبرت ص229).

(شَهَقَ) الشِّينُ وَالْهَاءُ وَالْقَافُ أَصْلٌ وَاحِدٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى عُلُوٍّ. مِنْ ذَلِكَ جَبَلٌ شَاهِقٌ، أَيْ عَالٍ. ثُمَّ اشْتُقَّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الشَّهِيقُ: ضِدُّ الزَّفِيرِ ; لِأَنَّ الشَّهِيقَ رَدُّ النَّفَسِ، وَالزَّفِيرَ إِخْرَاجُ النَّفَسِ. وَالْأَصْلُ فِي ذَلِكَ مَا ذَكَرْنَاهُ. وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: فُلَانٌ ذُو شَاهِقٍ، إِذَا اشْتَدَّ غَضَبُهُ. وَلَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَعَ ذَلِكَ صَوْتٌ.
