الليث: الشِّرْنافُ: ورقُ الزرع إذا طال وكثر حتى يُخاف فساده فيُقطع، فيقال حينئذ: شَرْنَفْتُ الزرع، وهي كلمة يمانية، وشك الأزهري في الشِّرْنافِ وشَرْنَفْتُ أنهما بالياء أو بالنون؛ وجعلهما زائدتين.
