(شَدَفَ) الشِّينُ وَالدَّالُ وَالْفَاءُ يَدُلُّ عَلَى ارْتِفَاعٍ فِي شَيْءٍ. مِنْ ذَلِكَ الشَّدَفُ وَهُوَ الشَّخْصُ، وَقَدْ قُلْنَا: إِنَّ الشَّخْصَ يَدُلُّ عَلَى سُمُوٍّ وَارْتِفَاعٍ. وَجَمْعُ الشَّدَفِ شُدُوفٌ. وَمِنْهُ فَرَسٌ أَشْدَفُ وَشُنْدُفٌ. وَنَاسٌ يَقُولُونَ: الشَّدَفُ كَالْمَيْلِ فِي أَحَدِ الشِّقَّيْنِ، وَالصَّوَابُ هُوَ الْأَوَّلُ، وَهُوَ أَقْيَسُ. وَيُقَالُ لِلْقَوْسِ: الشَّدْفَاءُ ; لِاعْوِجَاجِهَا.
