(زَيَرَ) الزَّاءُ وَالْيَاءُ وَالرَّاءُ لَيْسَ بِأَصْلٍ. يَقُولُونَ: رَجُلٌ زِيرٌ: يُحِبُّ مُجَالَسَةَ النِّسَاءِ وَمُحَادَثَتَهُنَّ. وَهَذَا عِنْدِي أَصْلُهُ الْوَاوُ، مِنْ زَارَ يَزُورُ، فَقُلِبَتِ الْوَاوُ يَاءً لِلْكَسْرَةِ الَّتِي قَبْلَهَا، كَمَا يُقَالُ هُوَ حِدْثُ نِسَاءٍ. قَالَ فِي الزِّيرِ:

مَنْ يَكُنْ فِي السِّوَادِ وَالدَّدِ وَالْإِغْ ... رَامِ زِيرًا فَإِنَّنِي غَيْرُ زِيرِ
