[زيف] زافَ البعيرُ يَزيفُ، أي تَبختَر في مِشيته. والزَيَّافَةُ من النوق: المختالة. ومنه قول عنترة ينباع من زفرى غضوب جسرة زيافة مثل الفنيق المكدم وكذلك الحمام عند الحمامة، إذا جر الذنابى ودفع مُقَدَّمَهُ بمؤخَّره واستدار عليها. ودرهمٌ زَيْفٌ وزائِفٌ. وقد زافَتْ عليه الدراهم، وزيفتها أنا.

(زَيَفَ) الزَّاءُ وَالْيَاءُ وَالْفَاءُ فِيهِ كَلَامٌ، وَمَا أَظُنُّ شَيْئًا مِنْهُ صَحِيحًا. يَقُولُونَ دِرْهَمٌ زَائِفٌ وَزَيْفٌ. وَمِنَ الْبَابِ زَافَ الْجَمَلُ فِي مَشْيِهِ يَزِيفُ، وَذَلِكَ إِذَا أَسْرَعَ. وَالْمَرْأَةُ تَزِيفُ فِي مَشْيِهَا، كَأَنَّهَا تَسْتَدِيرُ. وَالْحَمَامَةُ تَزِيفُ عِنْدَ الْحَمَامِ. فَأَمَّا الَّذِي يُرْوَى فِي قَوْلِ عَدِيٍّ:

تَرَكُونِي لَدَى قُصُورٍ وَأَعْرَا ... ضِ قُصُورٍ لِزَيْفِهِنَّ مَرَاقِ

فَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّ الزَّيْفَ الطُّنُفُ الَّذِي يَقِي الْحَائِطَ: وَيُقَالُ " لِزَيْفِهِنَّ ". وَكُلُّ هَذَا كَلَامٌ. وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ.
