أبن دريد: الدهف: الأخف الكثير، يقال: دهفت الشيء أدهفه دهفاً: إذا أخذته أخذاً كثيراً.
وقال غيره: جاءت داهفة من الناس وهادفة: أي غريب.
وإبل داهفة: أي معيية من طول السير، قال أبو صخر الهذلي:
فما قَدِمَتْ حتّى تَواتَرَ سَيْرُها ... وحتّى أُنِيْخَتْ وهي داهِفَةٌ دُبْرُ
