(دَلَجَ) الدَّالُ اللَّامُ وَالْجِيمُ أَصْلٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى سَيْرٍ وَمَجِيءٍ وَذَهَابٍ. وَلَعَلَّ ذَلِكَ أَكْثَرَ مَا كَانَ فِي خُِفْيَةٍ. فَالدَّلَجُ: سَيْرُ اللَّيْلِ. وَيُقَالُ أَدْلَجَ الْقَوْمُ، إِذَا قَطَعُوا اللَّيْلَ كُلَّهُ سَيْرًا; فَإِنْ خَرَجُوا مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ فَقَدِ ادَّلَجُوا، بِتَشْدِيدِ الدَّالِ. وَيُقَالُ إِنَّ أَبَا الْمُدْلِجِ الْقُنْفُذُ، وَيَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ أَكْثَرَ حَرَكَتِهِ بِاللَّيْلِ. وَالدَّوْلَجُ: السَّرَبُ. وَالدَّوْلَجُ: كِنَاسُ الْوَحْشِيِّ. وَهُوَ قِيَاسُ الْبَابِ; لِأَنَّهُمَا يُسْتَخْفَى فِيهِمَا.

ثُمَّ يُحْمَلُ عَلَى الْبَابِ، فَيُقَالُ لِلَّذِي يَأْخُذُ الدَّلْوَ مِنْ رَأْسِ الْبِئْرِ إِلَى الْحَوْضِ: الدَّالِجُ، وَذَلِكَ الْمَكَانُ الْمَدْلَجُ. وَالْفِعْلُ دَلَجَ يَدْلُجُ دُلُوجًا. قَالَ:

كَأَنَّ رِمَاحَهُمْ أَشْطَانُ بِئْرٍ ... لَهَا فِي كُلِّ مَدْلَجَةٍ خُدُودُ

وَأَمَّا قَوْلُ الشَّمَّاخِ:

وَتَشْكُو بِعَيْنٍ مَا أَكَلَّ رِكَابَهَا ... وَقِيلَ الْمُنَادِي أَصْبَحَ الْقَوْمُ أَدْلِجِي

فَإِنَّهُ حَكَى صَوْتَ الْمُنَادِي، أَنَّهُ كَانَ مَرَّةً يُنَادِي: أَصْبَحَ الْقَوْمُ، وَمَرَّةً يُنَادِي: أَدْلِجِي، يَأْمُرُ بِذَلِكَ.
