a. The seventh letter of the alphabet. Its numerical value is Six Hundred, (600).
خ alphabetical letter خ
The seventh letter of the alphabet: called خَآءٌ
[and خَا (respecting which latter see the letter ب)]. It is one of the letters termed مَهْمُوسَة [or non-vocal, i. e. pronounced with the breath only, without the voice]; and of those termed حَلْقِيَّة
[i. e. faucial, or guttural]: its place of utterance is the same as that of غ [which differs from it in being vocal]. (L.)

خ: قال ابن كَيْسانَ: من الحروف المجْهُورُ والمهْمُوسُ، والمهموسُ
عشرة: الهاء والحاء والخاء والكاف والشين والسين والتاء والصاد والثاء
والفاء، ومعنى المهموس أَنه حرف لان في مخرجه دون المجهور وجرى معه النفس، فكان
دون المجهور في رفع الصوت. وقال الخليل بن أَحمد: حروف العربية تسعة
وعشرون حرفاً، منها خمسة وعشرون صِحاحٌ لها أَحياز ومَدارِجُ، فالخاءُ
والغين في حيز واحد، والخاء من الحروف الحلقية، وقد ذكر ذلك في بابه أَول
الكتاب.
