(حَيَّ) الْحَاءُ وَالْيَاءُ وَالْحَرْفُ الْمُعْتَلُّ أَصْلَانِ: أَحَدُهُمَا خِلَافُ الْمَوْتِ، وَالْآخَرُ الِاسْتِحْيَاءُ الَّذِي [هُوَ] ضِدُّ الْوَقَاحَةِ.

فَأَمَّا الْأَوَّلُ فَالْحَيَاةُ وَالْحَيَوَانُ، وَهُوَ ضِدُّ الْمَوْتِ وَالْمَوَتَانِ. وَيُسَمَّى الْمَطَرُ حَيًا لِأَنَّ بِهِ حَيَاةَ الْأَرْضِ. وَيُقَالُ نَاقَةٌ مُحْيٍ وَمُحْيِيَةٌ: لَا يَكَادُ يَمُوتُ لَهَا وَلَدٌ. وَتَقُولُ: أَتَيْتُ الْأَرْضَ فَأَحْيَيْتُهَا، إِذَا وَجَدْتَهَا حَيَّةَ النَّبَاتِ غَضَّةً.

وَالْأَصْلُ الْآخَرُ: قَوْلُهُمُ اسْتَحْيَيْتُ مِنْهُ اسْتِحْيَاءً. وَقَالَ أَبُو زَيْدٍ: حَيِيتُ مِنْهُ أَحْيَا، إِذَا اسْتَحْيَيْتَ. فَأَمَّا حَيَاءُ النَّاقَةِ، وَهُوَ فَرْجُهَا، فَيُمْكِنُ أَنْ يَكُونَ مِنْ هَذَا، كَأَنَّهُ مَحْمُولٌ عَلَى أَنَّهُ لَوْ كَانَ مِمَّنْ يَسْتَحْيِي لَكَانَ يَسْتَحْيِي مِنْ ظُهُورِهِ وَتَكَشُّفِهِ.
