قوله تعالى: إِذْ أَنْذَرَ قَوْمَهُ بِالْأَحْقافِ
[الأحقاف/ 21] ، جمع الحِقْف، أي: الرمل المائل، وظبي حاقف: ساكن للحقف، واحْقَوْقَفَ: مال حتى صار كحقف، قال:
سماوة الهلال حتى احقوقفا

(حَقَفَ) الْحَاءُ وَالْقَافُ وَالْفَاءُ أَصْلٌ وَاحِدٌ، وَهُوَ يَدُلُّ عَلَى مَيَلِ الشَّيْءِ وَعِوَجِهِ: يُقَالُ احْقَوْقَفَ الشَّيْءُ، إِذَا مَالَ، فَهُوَ مُحْقَوْقِفٌ وَحَاقِفٌ. وَمِنْ ذَلِكَ الْحَدِيثُ: " «أَنَّهُ مَرَّ بِظَبْيٍ حَاقِفٍ فِي ظِلِّ شَجَرَةٍ» " فَهُوَ الَّذِي قَدِ انْحَنَى وَتَثَنَّى فِي نَوْمِهِ. وَلِهَذَا قِيلَ لِلرَّمْلِ الْمُنْحَنِي حِقْفٌ، وَالْجَمْعُ أَحْقَافٌ. قَالَ:

فَلَمَّا أَجَزْنَا سَاحَةَ الْحَيِّ وَانْتَحَى ... بِنَا بَطْنُ خَبْتٍ ذِي حِقَافٍ عَقَنْقَلِ

وَيُرْوَى: " ذِي قِفَافٍ ". وَقَالَ آخَرُ:

سَمَاوَةَ الْهِلَالِ حَتَّى احْقَوْقَفَا
