(حَضَبَ) الْحَاءُ وَالضَّادُ وَالْبَاءُ أَصْلَانِ: الْأَوَّلُ مَا تُسْعَرُ بِهِ النَّارُ، وَالثَّانِي جِنْسٌ مِنَ الصَّوْتِ.

فَالْأَوَّلُ قَوْلُهُ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُهُ: " حَضَبُ جَهَنَّمَ "، قَالُوا: هُوَ الْوَقُودُ بِفَتْحِ الْوَاوِ. وَيُقَالُ لِمَا تُسَعَّرُ النَّارُ بِهِ مِحْضَبٌ. وَيُنْشَدُ بَيْتُ الْأَعْشَى:

فَلَا تَكُ فِي حَرْبِنَا مِحْضَبًا ... لِتَجْعَلَ قَوْمَكَ شَتَّى شُعُوبًا

وَالصَّوْتُ كَقَوْلِهِمْ لِصَوْتِ الْقَوْسِ حِضْبٌ، وَالْجَمْعُ أَحْضَابٌ. فَأَمَّا قَوْلُهُمْ إِنَّ الْحِضْبَ الْحَيَّةُ فَفِيهِ كَلَامٌ، وَإِنْ صَحَّ فَإِنَّهُ شَاذٌّ عَنِ الْأَصْلِ.
