اسم مركب من السابقة ب وصفوى من (ص ف ف) نسبة إلى الصفة بمعنى الظلمة، والبهو الواسع العالي السقف، ومكان مظلل في مسجد المدينة كان يأوى إليه فقراء المهاجرين ويرعاهم الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وهم أصحاب الصفة.
