[بطل] الباطِلُ: ضدّ الحق، والجمع أَباطيلُ على غير قياس، كأنهم جمعوا إبطيلا. وقد بطل الشئ يَبْطُلُ بُطْلاً وَبُطولاً وبُطْلاناً، وأَبْطَلَهُ غيره. ويقال: ذهب دمه بُطْلاً، أي هَدراً. والبَطَلُ: الشجاعُ، والمرأة بَطَلَةٌ. وقد بَطُلَ الرجل بالضم يَبْطُلُ بُطولَةً وبَطَالةً، أي صار شجاعاً. وبَطَلَ الأجيرُ بالفتح بَطالةً، أي تعطل فهو بطال.
