برطل: البِرْطيل: حَجَرٌ أو حديدٌ فيه طول يُنقَرُ به الرَّحَى، خِلْقَتُه كذلك، ليس ممّا يُطَوِّله الناس، ولا يُحَدِّدونه، وقد يُشَبَّهُ به خَطمُ النَّجيبة، قال :

كأن ما فات عينيها ومَذْبَحَها ... من خَطْمِها ومن اللَّحيَيْنِ بِرْطيلُ

والبُرْطُلَة: المِظَلَّةُ الصَّيفيّة.
