الْخَسْف: بِالْفَتْح فرورفتن. وَمِنْه خسف الْمَكَان أَي ذَهَابه وغوره إِلَى قَعْر الأَرْض وَجمعه الخسوف كَمَا جَاءَ فِي الحَدِيث فِي بَيَان أَشْرَاط السَّاعَة وَثَلَاثَة خُسُوف خسف بالمشرق وَخسف بالمغرب وَخسف بِجَزِيرَة الْعَرَب.
