المدبر: من أعتق عن دبر فمطلقه أن يعلق عتقه بموت مطلق كإن مت فأنت حر، أو بموت الغالب وقوعه إن مت إلى سنة والمقيد أن يعلقه بموت مقيد كإن مت من مرضي هذا.

الْمُدبر: الْمَمْلُوك الَّذِي علق مَوْلَاهُ عتقه بِمُطلق مَوته بِأَن قَالَ أَنْت حر بعد موتِي أَو إِذا مت فَأَنت حر وَأما إِذا قيد مَوته بِمَرَض كَذَا أَو بِمُطلق موت رجل آخر لَا يكون مُدبرا مُطلقًا بل مُدبرا مُقَيّدا وَبَينهمَا تفَاوت فِي الْأَحْكَام كَمَا بَين فِي كتب الْفِقْه.

المُدَبَّر: هو من أعْتِقَ عن دبر يعني في آخر حياة المولى، فالمُطلَقُ منه: أن يُعَلَّق عتقُه بموت مطلقاً مثلاً إن متُّ فأنت حر، أو بموت إلى مدَّة يكون الغالب فيه وقوعه مثلاً: إن مت إلى نحو مائة سنة فأنت حر، والمقيد أن يعلقه بموت مقيَّد مثلاً: إن مت في مرضي هذا فأنت حر.
